- My workstation was piling up with THINGS and it was time to make some changes for better desk organization. During our office makeover I decided I wanted to make a desk shelf for my office, and a monitor stand for the closet. We used some scrap wood we had from some old built-ins we tore out of the living room.

I recently went monitor stand hunting and she’s absolutely right. Lots of really ugly stands available and every time I found a pretty one, with a beautiful design, it came with a hefty price tag.
What can’t Chris do? He’s a Physician, a heli pilot, a filmmaker and now a woodworker. He’s the guy every Asian parents compare their child to.
Would his Chinese name be Ling Ling?
@@redbikerdude AND he has perfect pitch, my gawd.
Finding solid maple slab doors is like winning the DIY lottery!! 😍 Staining maple/birch is also the worst thing I have to do as a cabinetmaker. I found using a conditioner is the only way to get consistent colour.
Always love Becki and Chris' videos, they are always the perfect blend of UA-cam Vlog and TV Documentary :)
Thanks so much!
Can you make a video dedicated to the server closest? I would really love to learn how it works, how you use it effectively and how to set up one up myself
“I don’t give a shit” made me laugh out loud. I went back and watched that part again because it was just hilarious. Thank you for always keeping things down to earth.
I LOVE how the lighter wood finish turned out with everything 😍 it's so Crisp
We love crafting everything and the opportunity to make it exactly to your own specs is a massive plus. Since we have our kids though, we found it a lot harder to justify the time invested in some of those projects versus getting something ready.
I’m a general contractor with all the tools. Was just looking at the grovemade. Searched “diy frack stand” and BOOM my favorite peeps! (I know Nick from NS Builders) that’s hilarious! (I also said F*^# when I heard ETC!!!? Whaaat!? Lol)
Definitely going to get walnut now lol
On an unrelated note....I totally have color-grading-envy from your whole channel
now, Becki will be selling all her patterned designs. And, we'll buy them!
The shelves turned out great, love the grain on that re-used wood!
When I saw it on the video I was like I need it now I can make it. Can wait to see all the other home renovation videos that are in the pipeline. Keep it up and stay safe.
The advantage of DIY is you can, as you say, customize it to fit your needs, like routing out a little rounded dip near the edge of the top or shelf to prevent pencils or pens from rolling out.
I would recommend anyone wanting to try this project on the cheap and don't have a lot of scrap lumber you could use to buy a sheet of MDF, have the store cut it to size. Buy some veneer edging to iron on the exposed sides of the MDF. Then paint, stain, or add a veneer over the top and sides. If you enclose the back consider adding a path on the back to snake cables through.
Oh this would be cool in MDF and painted I bet!
I just found you guys and I have been watching Woodworking/DIY videos for over 5 years! I adore you both. Such happy wonderful vibes, and the laughing…made me instantly feel better. Great content! Love the desk shelf design.
This is why I look forward to Sunday. Watching you guys makes me smile, laugh, etc
I was literally looking to buy a desk shelf for my monitors or make one today, and I see this video now!
Chris is a jack of all trades ! Those product shots!! Replayed it over and over!
Once I move this summer I'm going to be using a lot of the cool stuff you're teaching to build to better my next office :) great videos guys!
This was so fun, and timely. I’m working on a similar project.
THOSE MONITOR STANDS ARE AMAZING
watching Chris and -=- revenge of the nerds-=- keeps poping in to my head
Looks so good!! Wish I had an office for a stand like this!
I was looking for this same type of monitor stand just like the one you built. Thank you so much for sharing the plans and doing the awesome video. I love how you present it all together. Will attempt to make the stand myself as I can't find exactly what I want in stores. Keep up the great work Becki and Chris!
We love this space and set up!! Definitely gives us some inspo for our new space.
Your projects always look so professional. I appreciate the work!
I just recently used those ikea feet to build myself a monitor stand, but I cut of the raised section off the mounting plate. And seeing that side was then the shortest I put that towards the front and back edge of the timber plank which in turn gave more distance between the legs. 👍🏼
I could not agree more with Becky's sentiment about the "speakers" -- Who gives a FACK! about other peeps opinions. So the moral of that quote is "Don't give two 💩and do what makes sense for you." -- Loved the video, especially the fact that the intro took almost two minutes 😂 You guys are the best. Thanks, Peckham and Nicholas ✌🏼
DIY = amazing skills + amazing ideas + amazing tools
We appreciate your attention to the details. Good call on using the lighter wood in that space. The projects look good! Looking forward to seeing what you both do next.
Thanks guys! Still debating routing out a channel for those feet and moving them closer to the edge 🤣 thanks for the constant inspo and lessons, love your channel!
I really love your desk setup it's so pretty and functional!!!
That desk shelf looks IMMACULATE with the white of the desk.
great! now I'm going to be shopping my apt to see what I can build/fix to make my small work space better lol thanks. dope video guys! as always. Becki and Chris for the win! also, Chris is a one man army lol he knows a lot about A LOT lol his skills game is way up! so cool.
This is a great idea for the desk! I wish I could build like you guys! Would love to have this for my gaming computer
Love your DIYs. You guys are awesome!
This was such a great video!! I’m working with my Father-in-Law to help me make one of these desk shelves so very timely!!
Thank you guys for sharing the how to on this specific project a very good one
Great video, I'm going to give this a shot! Thank you for the plans, and detailed instructions. You guys rock!
Funny how I was planning to build a monitor stand from scraps I have in my garage just a few days ago 😂
Love the design, thanks for sharing the plans! I'm going to try this with a black stain using vinegar and steel wool, excited to see how it turns out!
Love the light wood tbh... super helpful and entertain video as always!
Such a great video! Really enjoy what you guys put together. You guys are so much fun to watch!
That shelf is giving me some Grovemade Vibes!
Ya'll are just awesome!! Much love!
thanks for this.. I did one with plywood.. my desk now is so organised and there is so much more space.
this is so clean im goint to try this soon on my own
This was super soothing to watch. Thank you guys!
Thank you for sharing these two projects. Indeed the desk shelf is a bit more difficult, but still doable if one can live with some compromises (without the rounded edges). I would at least try to do the desk shelf myself. Especially with all the home office arrangement, it might be an easy "get away from the desk" project.
LOVE IT!!!
Holy crap, these edits are awesome.
The energy in this video could fuel a small city! Great post.
I’m always willing to learn more.. and I must say love it 😍
Can I just say, that B-roll of the finished product was friggin deadly 😍 your energy is awesome and love your content, thank you for all the videos, podcasts and laughs!!
Thanks Dan!
Right, I'm ready to invest in that Becki and Chris curated bespoke furniture store 😋.... Just love this as usual!😎
Loved the critique at the end. Really enjoyed that.
The best monitor stand I have seen so far. Aesthetically pleasing. Wished I have the skills to build it. Better yet, wished I can buy one in a store.
You have to be a real man to build something like this, I am not, so I have to shop for my goods. Found a great company out of Canada that does great custom wood stands.
You guys are experts
I would totally buy that desk shelf.
I just wanted to pass along that on your table saw when you do the extended fence setup the red dial on the fence will deploy a lip so you aren't worried about the piece dropping off the table when cutting. Nice to see a custom piece made for your desk!
I didn’t need this on my desk until I saw this video. To the shop!
God you two make me want to do all of the diys you do lol love this!!
I’m so glad this popped up on my news feed. I am so fascinated by the beauty and precision of everything. Even the paint and the linen curtains feel like they have RGB levels LOL. New subbie here.
WOW you guys are fantastic...... I was surfing for a monitor stand / shelf build and you guys nailed it. I would much rather build a project then buy it. Thanks
Reminds me of the great projects my dad would build, and then stop when it was 90% done. Like lower cabinets in the garage that never got a top.
I only just realised you two have matching glasses and its too cute
that looks neat!
Just came across your channel thanks to James Quantz Jr. Love it! My desk is a stressful mess. I think that this monitor shelf will be ideal for me. Thank you for the inspiration!
The passion! 🔥🤩😂
I may need one of these in the future 👌🏽
You guys are nutz! LOL I love the blooper reel.
I'm going to build that (sort of) for my east end SJ's desk. nice work!
Great job guys! Building is better than buying.
I Love the sound of the MRI you make LOL
Love you guys
Constant inspiration 👌🏻
I did the monitor shelf idea with a commercial shelf I found in my travels. The self was thicker and had a superior melamine finish on it. Downside it was white. The deskshelf in my case has to be purchased as I am living in a 30m^2 apartments so I can't fit a table saw and a router table and I don't have a kreg Jig. Nor do I have room for scrap wood for projects! But I love the idea. I think I will go to grovemade for my desk shelf. They have a really nice one and its fairly large.
Oh lord, you guys are perfect
Great video and love your humor. The monitor stand for your desk looks great!
On a side note, I’m really impressed with the Rode wireless Go that you had for audio. It sounded nice and clean (like all your videos) and seems like minimal fuss to get going. Been thinking of picking up the new ones and this might have been the nudge to do it.
Ha, I was about to ask where that shelf was from in the last vid. I've been drooling a bit over Grovemade's stuff, but it'd cost an arm and a leg when shipping/VAT is added, so clearly it's cheaper to buy a house with a big enough space for a workshop, all the tools and materials, and then make it myself.
The grovemade stuff is so pretty!
I need that same monitor stand also !!
Great job. The main secret of woodworking is knowing how to recover from your mistakes. I would have just repositioned the legs on the monitor stand. Only a few of the screw holes would have shown and you’d never know since no one can get their head underneath to look. Wood staining is always tough. Maple and cherry in particular. Always use a sanding sealer. Also, check out the Sam Maloof oil/poly top coat that Rockler sells. My go-to finish.
Oh wicked thanks I’ll check it out!
Thanks for using pocket holes! (they are the second best holes on the planet 👍)
YAAAAAAAAASSS I need this in my life (and on my desk) !! 🤤😍
"I don't give a shit!" *chef's kiss* lol
It’s seriously so beautiful! I will say, I can’t imagine how much more expensive it would have been with walnut.
oh im definitely making this when I'm done with the chairs im building for the fire pit area
wondering what talent will I see next from Chris! haha love your stuffs
Love it/them. Might even make one myself for my office. I EVEN have the same Ikea feet, so I'll show you how I fit them... without the HUGE plates ;)
A quick modification you could do to the server shelf is make a simple square router template for the base plates. Route out a 1/8 inch deep area as close to the corner as possible, and you can mount the legs closer to the edge without the metal showing. Countersunk screws will help you achieve an almost flush look without pulling out your Dremel and modifying the metal base plate. Love the vids! You guys have such an inventive design aesthetic!
Yess that’s what Chris wanted to do but I convinced him to leave it for ease 🤣
Could you have not added a cable management wood stripe behind the desk?
Looks amazing! Love the finish... Might pay to stick on a very thing adhesive felt strip under the sides so they don't mark the desk top and don't slip as easily...
I look forward to the bloopers at the end of every video 😂❤️
Good job
The clown song reminds me so much of Sarah Paulson singing 😂 love the woodwork guys!
Can you do a video on what power tools a home owner should have
Y’all, this is a really nice build video and design. Well done!
Thanks much!
4:05 I used a sander tp round out the edges of my desk lol
Oh man I love you desk setup. I didn't know you guys were into woodwork as well as helicoptering, if that's a word :-) I own a hardware store and sell everything you used except the wood. Even the Kreg products. Thanks for making my day. Although I'm jealous of that desk :-)
13:06 "I'm proud of something I've crafted with my own hands"
The monitor stand looks nice, but I gotta give the W to the potato finger!
That potato finger was art
Wow, that is fancy! I don't know, Becki, that looks advanced level stuff to me. Definitely not beginner or intermediate for someone who can barely get a screw in the wall. 😂Really nice work, Chris!
very nice
