  • Could the old some abandoned LIRR tracks in Queens be revived to restore rail service to southern Queens? Or will it be turned into a park?
Transportation advocates want the MTA to bring back commuter rail service along the long-abandoned Rockaway Beach Branch, while environmentalists and open-space advocates say a more realistic option is to create a 3.5-mile linear park, kind of like the High Line in Manhattan. It would be called the QueensWay.

I could never understand why this route wasn't restored and used as a direct line into JFK... with fast service from Penn Station, Brooklyn (using existing cut-off at Woodhaven from the Atlantic Avenue LIRR route) and soon with the new connection from Grand Central Terminal to the LIRR west of Woodside. It would be by far the quickest rail connection into JFK with very little new construction required at the JFK location.
