I had no idea that the Border War period lasted so long. in the early years of the 24thC, Starfleet taskforces might have only rarely included Excelsior class ships, meaning that only Miranda Class ships or similar and smaller ships might have been employed, and probably doing quite well against early Cardassian Orders. Later on, Excelsiors and variants making a joke of the Cardassians, until maybe humbled by Galors and Netals and some good strategies from the Cardassians taking advantage of Starfleet arrogance? Yet, again, the parity wiped out by Ambassadors and early 'Galaxy' designs like the Freedom and New Orleans.
The Cardassians hung their hopes on the Galor and its various upgrades and variants as the backbone of their navy. They clearly didn't give up in trying to effectively close the tech gap with Starfleet.

Just found this today. Great video. Cardassian designs don't get enough love sometimes. They have archetype or design language like the other powers, but within that there can be such variation. It's fascinating breaking them down into timeframes. I'm not actually complaining but just putting it out there,. May favourite Cardassian ship is missing. The Tonga Class from the Dominion Wars game.
