Waylon's #1 is actually a '53. His (actual) #2 was a '53 too. Cody Hixon's leatherwork is fantastic. He did one for me years ago, based on the Broadcaster Fender CLAIMED was one of the two guitars this was based on. The only problem with that is... it has been proven incorrect to the point of an auction house withdrawing said guitar from its major Waylon auction in 2014. Keith Urban owns the Broadcaster Fender erroneously claimed was Waylon's #2. Waylon's ACTUAL #2 (not the Broadcaster) was last seen in the hands of a UK collector, I believe. The "#2" that they claimed to have used to help design this guitar was actually just a regular '53 Tele that Dave Kyle was trying to help Waylon sell in 1997. When the guitar wasn't moving, the idea came about to give it a leather cover. It still didn't sell. It came up for sale when Waylon moved house in 2000 and -- once again -- didn't sell. This is a cool piece, for sure, but Fender took some major liberties in marketing it. This is basically what the 1995/1996 Waylon Tribute Tele should have been. (All of the above was brought to Fender's attention by very reputable sources, by the way. Irrefutable evidence was presented.)
Somebody really needs to document these details more accurately. Over the years, I've heard many stories, about which is or are Waylon's original Telecaster's and 'where are they now?'.... As far as I'm aware, Shooter still owns #1 and #2? ..... so the Keith Urban guitar was that a second backup? Reggie Young had one, which he sold off which is the one I think Nicole bought for Keith.... don't quote me... Waylon also used a handful of others, I think it's noted at about 7? 'players' that Waylon used throughout his career. The original served to be too 'heavy' by the 80's for him, so that was retired. He had a couple of black guard Tele's, then he used the Tele with the EMG's during the 80's/90's. He also used his own signature model towards the end of his life. I'm fascinated by it all, and I wish I'd done more book keeping over the years just for my own interest about Waylon's guitars and where they have ended up. The new Fender tribute guitars look stunning!
@@theoloutlaw Oh, and the guitar that was too heavy and was retired was the Broadcaster. The #2 looked a lot like the #1 but had a very slightly different leather pattern. Waylon had five main leather covered stage guitars during his career. The other two are the "oddball," as seen during the intro to the Dukes Of Hazzard and now owned by Keith Richards, and his 1990 Fender Custom Shop guitar, which is a near-perfect copy of his #1. Kinda funny how they had the info on file from when they copied his #1 but instead chose to instead use both the #1 and a guitar he never publicly played to make this one, eh?
25 grand for a counterfeit guitar, It's still a chunk of wood cut out by a CNC "A EYE" router. a fret job and set up cost around $300 so it's way under a 1000 to make this guitar. The Hubris of these counterfeiters is off the charts. Buy a real Fender guitar at G&L guitars

As a fan and a collector it's worth it 👌 it's possible to be an artist and play this on stage and in the studio 😅
