I have 4 layer board with lot of power and signal. Management is ok with 2Oz copper on ALL 4 layers but not ok with 6 layer 1Oz on all 4 layers. Our Fab gave us a quote in which this 6 layer was 4% cheaper buy management is keeping its foot on 4 layer 2Oz all layer abomination 🤦
Hartley probably knows what he wants to talk about, but what he says, about internal planes on a 4-layer board, for example, are just way too simplistic. so many: 1.6mm separation? Capacitance of the dielectric is a significant amount of capacitance - what? And decouplers are useless simply because some people have no idea how to select them for the major frequency(frequencies) of interest. Look - please ignore this video, he has said so many things that are true - at best - in contexts far more complicated than the details he has alluded to. My advice is that the best thing you can do is stop using raw graduates and Altium, to lay out boards, and get people with experience, and knowledge to lay out the boards. Take this video to mean only one thing - laying out boards is way more complex than 99% of peple realise.
I'm a little disappointed. 🙁This should have been called Rick Hartley's PC board stack-up WORST practices. I guess we'll have to attend Altium Live get the real deal.
Ark, thank you so much for your opinion. We agree! That does sound more clear and we've changed the title to reflect that. Thanks so much, hope to see you at AltiumLive! Please join us: www.altium.com/live-conference/san-diego
"It's all about rise time". Thanks Judy and Rick for such an interesting interview.
Enjoyed the interview! Great job Judy... and Rick such good information, as always!
Very very informative, as I student I learned a lot about pcb design of multilayer board.
Thanks you sir and altium group for education contribution
