  • Here's to being 33 and taking up a new sport! This is the first video in a series where i try to learn to ride BMX, something i've never tried before. I have decent bike control on a mountainbike and road bike, but these skills don't seem to translate as well to BMX. The other way around, it is said that you unlock the holy grail of bike control!
    The first skill i wanted to improve was the manual. Of course i looped out and crashed. So i built a manual machine/manual trainer to practice safely.
    The BMX i got is a used 2005 GT Bestwick, still in pretty good condition.
    Please ignore the lack of safety gear while building the manual machine

      Hows it going? I'm edging towards 46 and my first bmx is bought and waiting for me. I always wanted one as a kid but was bought racers, as we called them. I was appreciative for sure, and rode the hell out of my bikes but bmx was really the bike I should have had in that urban environment. Never too late? Lol.

      I just started at 37. So far I suck balls but its only been a few months. I tried to bunny hop onto a planter yesterday, missed the back wheel and destroyed my shin with the pedal. Shin pads ordered. I'm finding it's the balance which is hardest. Hopefully it's just a matter of building up the muscle memory

    After riding geared mountain bikes all my life, I recently started BMX at 35 (now 36) and love it, for concrete it beats the MTB hands down, riding a DH bike on the street was a nightmare.. Love my BMX

    • @HFODT
      @HFODT  2 роки тому

      Big bikes have their place, concrete is usually not it. I’ve had a few hard crashes with the box and now prefer a dirt jumper for messing about on in the street, but i get you, there’s s something about the simplicity of a bmx that just makes it fun.

    I recommend going out on a parking lot as you will learn more about balance and be in motion. But before actually starting to manual, I think you should practice getting your feet off the pedals so you are comfortable jumping off the bike so you don’t land on your back.

    i am 45. i am a manual master. this popped up randomly in my videos. i seen mt bikers do this. do not do this. this will never help. as you are not rolling. it will never ever be the same feeling. all i can say is have a good brake. lean back. bend the knees. pump them in and out. watch other pros manual. see how they do it. study their body. i seen some chick on youtube doing a mt bike how to manual on one of these machines. i am 100 percent sure she could never ever ever do it in real life. never. or bunnyhop in and out of manual. into other tricks. grinds etc. just like with anything. it is about time spend on the saddle. everywhere you ride. lean back. manual. do one sidewalk crack at a time. then 2. the go to parking lots. from one yellow line to another. then another. study it. watch others. only doing it for real will work. this machine is like going from tball to fast pitch. and not being able to hit the fast pitch. this will hinder your manual. and even if you can do it on this machine. it is like learning to ollie sitting still and not rolling. anyone can do it. now try to ollie a skateboard rolling. throw this machine in the garbage and just ride. ride ride ride. and lean back and just keep trying.

    • @HFODT
      @HFODT  6 років тому +4

      A manual master eh? I've been realizing exactly what you're saying little by little. I can easily hold my front wheel up for 30 sec on the manual machine but in the car park I manage maybe two parking spots. Huge difference. I'm now practicing outside and it's way harder. What this gave me though is the confidence to recognise when I'm looping out and if I can save it or not. The first time I tried manualing a bmx I hit the back of my head hard enough to have headaches for a couple of weeks.

    • @MOUNTAINOUS
      @MOUNTAINOUS 6 років тому +1

      just if you are afraid of flipping back. make sure you got a killer brake. if you go back to far. hit the brake. if you front end drops. let it. let it hit the ground and pull right back up. i got tons of videos showing me manual decks of bowls. quarterpipes. i can hop out of manuals into grinds etc. etc. but i have rode bmx most my life. and i am 45 and i have bmx tattooed on my forearm. so i better be able to. i can do them as long as the lights are green bro. bmx. martial arts. archery. guns. survival. snowboarding. those are what i am good at. i have no issue saying i suck at video games. or i suck at baseball. but i do know a few things. one one is bmx. it is time spent. the more you manual. the more you ride. the more you can do them. hop up a curb. land in one. hold it carving around light posts and then to a small stair set and hop out of the manual and off the stairs. and that is basic. that is stuff my old sorry butt can do. now they do whips in and out of them. flip in and out etc. but you will be great at them if you just do them. i am not as good now as when i only rode bmx. but i still can float them with ease. but when i seen mt bikers doing this stand i thought. god the time it took to make that thing. could of been a hour or two of real manual training outside while actually moving. the world changes when you move. doing manuals super slow or doing them super fast. that changes things. but sitting still. dont help any. i really believe these machines dont help even 1 percent. only doing it will help. but this is just my opinion. i am old and fat. if i can do it. you can too. i will be making tons of bmx videos this summer. i will sub to you. you can sub back. if you go to my page you can see my main video is called rad bmx tribute. me last summer doing old school tricks and i redid the intro to rad. if you like it. comment. and i can send you a link to some of my manual vids. i have over 800 vids. so it is to many to sort through. peace and good luck.

    • @HFODT
      @HFODT  6 років тому +1

      Yeah...i checked out your videos. You have some skills man! Thanks for the advice. The wind plays a huge role too for me and the angle the pavement is tilted at. Way harder to do them one one side of my street than the other. But I get what you're saying. Practice, practice and practice. Hopefully by the end of summer I'll get there!

    • @MOUNTAINOUS
      @MOUNTAINOUS 6 років тому

      and a slight downhill is easier also. if you find a long mellow parking lot. go downhill. hold it up. set it down. hold it up. and just the whole way downhill. keep doing them. when the wheel drops. take a second. bend the knees. pull it back. do it over. over over over over and over. that is how i got good. everywhere i rode. i would manual. i would then find my lines in town or campus. and i would manual from this line to that one. or from this sidewalk to the curb. i have done some i bet a football field length. any day of the week a good 40 to 60 footer. but there were times in my peak of riding when i was 30 or so and i would be in the zone. riding alot. mid summer and i would find a few blocks where it was downhill slightly and go as fast as i could pedal. and then lean back. float the first 50 to 100 feet before tapping the brake. because once you tap the brake. you start to have to do it more and more and slow down as you manual. that is why the brakeless guys who are real good at it. do it longer. as there is no tapping. only pumping the legs. no slowing down. etc. keep going. and i did sub to you. so if you put out a vid this summer doing one outside 50 feet. i can comment. ya boy you did it. you know. you got this. just keep going.

    This is a great idea. I am 45 and getting back into it after 20+ years. This would have been great to have because the first day I took my new bike out I looped doing a manual and stretched my MCL and tore my miniscus. This would have prevented that from happening.

      Thanks! I'm not the first to build one but it has certainly helped me along a bit. I had exactly the same problem, first time I tried to manual a bmx I looped out, didn't manage to jump off in time, spinaled and hit the back of my head. Had headaches for weeks afterwards. This has helped me be comfortable with throwing my weight back and finding the balance point.

    if you want to get into bmx then its not about staying at home, practicing manuals. its about being outside, riding, befriending other riders, learning to read architecture, finding spots and so on.
    just my two cents from many years of riding.

    • @HFODT
      @HFODT  5 років тому

      Totally agree! The bmx scene is pretty small here in Stockholm, and the majority of my riding is enduro/dh. Bmx was an experiment to see if I can build up some street skills which will then hopefully translate to the bigger wheels too. So far, slow going though, been spending most my time on the big bike.

  • @nwbudro9210
    @nwbudro9210 6 років тому +3

    Yeah, my first attempt at learning to manual caused me to loop out and hurt my ankle. Second attempt: pretty much same except for hurt shoulder and not ankle. So, in hindsight, do you think this machine was beneficial?

    • @HFODT
      @HFODT  6 років тому

      Looping out was a concern especially since the first thing I did with that bmx was loop out and smack my head on the ground. I think the manual machine helped a little with finding the balance point, but more importantly it helped with the mental barrier I had for throwing my weight back far enough. I've started practicing outside too and while install can't manual further than like 10m, I feel way safer doing it. I still loop out occasionally, but now it's second nature to jump off safely. So to me it was beneficial. Not that if you build one you'll magically be able to manual for hours, but it helped a little. The rest will hopefully come from hours of practice.

    Here I am just turning 30 and let me tell you it surprises me till this day to think that all this time I miss my early 20s and before because I raced bmx for 13 years and last class I raced was 19-26x and after having my first child at 16 I raced still and wanted to make it to worlds and I was good too like hands down good but with a child and smoking at 18 I was let’s just say disappointed at myself for smoking and at 19 I met this dude who took me in as his little brother I got into street and I love street to death and I can manny like a mothatrucka lol but 360s I’m working on and bar spins but you put me in front of a ledge or rail and stairs I’ll 180 and or 180 half cab off a 7-10 set stair or decent gap and pull it off but like I said 360s and bars are my challenge right now and for grinds I can double peg, 180 double, 180 feeble, smith, sprocket stall because I have the first original subrosa magnum red and black sprocket guard with the Trojan symbol lol, crook grind and 180 crook grind to fakies. It’s funny to because 360s and bars just get to me and idk why I can’t but I can let go of one hand and I can pull up bar like nothing and faking pull up bar but I can’t hop bar lol

Personally I only looped out and spineled once when I was learning how to manual, once you can you can bail out of a manual at at speed you wouldn't get hurt so there is very little danger. that pretty cool thing if it is raining or snowing and you dont have access to a indoor skatepark but you can beat the practicing outside it also easier because you can use marker to see how far did a manual. What else trick are you working on? Yeah Bmx isn't kind on the body especially for us older dudes ha but damn is it ever fun. Best advice is to make friends with some older BMXers in the skatepark and they will show you the ropes and it will help you progress.

      Thanks dude! Yeah, the bike is a second hand deal, and i had changing a few things out in mind. So far i've swapped out the bars, stem and installed a 25t sprocket. The idea behind the manual machine was to get myself comfortable with throwing my weight back with such short chainstays. It feels like you need a lot less effort to loop out than on an mtb. Also the first time i tried manualling that bmx, i looped out, caught my foot on the rear pegs and hit my head pretty bad. I've gotten to the point where i'm totally comfortable bailing outside and can keep the front end up for 10ish meters. Started working on fakies and 180s...tough on the wrists! Also gotten comfortable..ish with dropping into a bowl. Nice to see there are other dudes my age staring bmx!

      Cool that you're getting back into it! I basically bought some planks and winged it as i went along, so I'm sure there's room for improvement. My best advice is have your bike with you and measure as you go. Also, i still don't feel I've mastered manuals, and a manual machine is only part of the story. It's great training, and it will help you find the balance point, but nothing can replace practicing outside. You can't mimic the side to side forces or the terrain undulations with a manual machine. Good luck with the manuals! 🤘

      HFODT well I built one this weekend and I think it’s going to help with the muscle memory. I could manual 100’ feathering my brake but felt like shifting back and forth is key to the long ones. @HFODT  4 роки тому +1

      Should really shoot an update video. Yeah my manuals got a little better but I spinalled pretty badly last year and haven't touched the bmx since. Been riding my mtb and trying to learn tricks on it. Funny how comfortable I feel on a big bike vs the bmx. Itching to give the bmx another go though.

      Thanks! Sorry I don't, I went pretty much on feel. I used two 28mmx120mm planks, the closest measurement in imperial would be a 1x4 or 2x4. Then I just measured everything on the spot.

    need a 21 inch top tube.. Standard,S&M,Sunday,WethePeople,Fit etc etc. they dont make bmx bikes taller they make them longer you look way to big for your bike.

      This was a second hand bmx just to try, I'll be getting something more modern soonish. But yeah, agree with you, even with bigger bars that bike feels small.

    What about left and right balance?

    • @HFODT
      @HFODT  6 років тому

      Some things you can't learn on a manual machine. Still, being suspended on the pegs there is a little room for left/right balancing. Nothing beats practicing outside but this helped me get the confidence to be able to know when I'll have to bail off the back.

    I’m 30 and outside of a little bit of bmx racing (I wasn’t that great at racing I was scared of the launch gate) and I’m just now getting back into it. But I’m not going into racing, I just wanna be able to ride around and do some fun stuff. I used to skateboard a bit too. Knowing there’s others at my age taking on bmx doesn’t make me feel so weird

    • @HFODT

      Tell me about it...i rolled up to a skate park and raised the average age by about a decade. I ride fully padded up, kids think i'll be doing back flips. I then proceed to disappoint them by almost crashing when dropping into a bowl...

    While i appreciate the novelty of the idea (getting back behind bars at age 30 myself and falling hurts more after not doing it for 7 years) i'd say rather practice in an empty parking lot and actually loop out on purpose a lot to get used to the sensation and how to catch yourself without eating shit... this setup excludes the most important part of a manual and that's the feeling and physics that momentum brings to the table.

    • @HFODT
      @HFODT  5 років тому

      Yeah, you're absolutely spot on! I had jo expectations that this will make me a manual master, and in fact it hasn't, but it's put me closer to finding the balance point, and it was a fun winter project for when the weather is bad. It has helped me along a lot, but you just can't mimic all the physics aspects of a manual indoors on a stationary bike.

    • @HFODT
      @HFODT  4 роки тому

      No, sorry, I basically measured the wheelbase and went from there. Padded out the long plank the bike sits on a little so that there is a bit of material in front and behind the bike. In hindsight, I could have had the plank extend a little further back but that I built is pretty stable as is.
