Back in the 80’s I practiced Isshinryu an Okinawan karate. I made a makawara board from a 2x4, cloth bath rag, covered with canvas, And secured by a bunch of simple thumbtacks along the side of the board
Our boxing coach had us striking makiwara boards when training. This was in the early 70's when they weren't even heard of. It "definitely" gave us an edge. Our team was in the State top 10 for years!!! We were good ❤...
Good point, we were chatting about this wrist strength thing in my Kali class and how so many boxers break their hands and wrists in engagements outside of the ring when the hand isn’t protected by wraps and gloves. Knuckle press-ups seem to work pretty well for me for wrist strength and also hanging from a pull-up bar, but you can’t beat manual labour for day-to-day strength!
In my Okinawan Karate youth I spent many hours in front of a makiwara . Used to have calluses on my knuckles from all the knuckle push ups and the makiwara.
I used to condition my knuckles. Nowadays, I just condition my shins and occasionally go full bore, no gloves on the hevy bag to make sure my wrist stays strong. There are a few schools of thought on this. Some say condition your hands and some say that's bs we're apex preditors because we are tool grabers not bi*** slappers. Are hands aren't evolved to hit things nessisarally. I see the logic in that. But I still condition my wrists and shins.
This toughens the skin and strengthens the hand muscles. I used one back in the 70s. The heavy bag lets you really unload even more, while the speed bag increases speed and rhythm. My favorite is the double end bags, since they are a moving target, which is more like the opponent. Good training video here, as always.
Great idea. I've mentioned on your channel before, my use of told tires screwed to my gym wall. I was planning to stuff them with pool noodles, but they aren't large enough in diameter. I'll find something. They work well enough for now though. After your last video on being conditioned to fight if needed, I added a minute of heavy bag work at the end of each slam ball and kettle bell work out. I planned on 2 minutes, lol.... One is enough for now. Maybe in a couple of weeks I'll add more.
Thanks for the video. I wonder what would be readily available at the hardware store that would have the right consistency. Maybe some of that insulating foam for pipes could be cut, unrolled, and attached to create the same effect.
It's a good way to condition the knuckles, beginners can start with a punching bag for practise and then move on to a board like this, we were made to do knuckles dips for conditioning in our sessions. Meanwhile... Neighbour - why are you hitting a board😂😂 boards don't hit back. 411- yo come over here let me level up my practising now 😂😂💀💀
I was always taught to imagine you were holding a pint jug (verticle) if punching a target so your wrist is more in line with the forearm bones (ulna and the radius) 🤷
Proper punching technique is critical to learn
When you say, "Hello, my friend" I feel like you are my friend.
Good! Anybody who subscribes and supports my channel is my friend
Love the simplicity. Thank you

Funny thing is, I had no idea how they were made traditionally, but this seem to work fairly well it never fell apart surprisingly

Nice 👍
good stuff, I appreciate your perspectives, really is good stuff.
Nice. Will be good for solo knife training as well, with a trainer of course.
Some very nice shots. Can see, that you are still in a good shape. Like that!
Thanks so much! I try to set a good example. I’m not getting any younger at age 46 haha
Good stuff as always ...stay safe.

Awesome!
Amazing, you should add it to the wooden dummy project you did while back.
💯🙂👍

👍
