I found it extremely disrespectful that they cut Hamaguchi's speech at least twice. He struggled to speak in English, which is not his first language, and yet they cut him off several times. That said, Oscar more than deserved, amazing film.

I agree. Even Kevin Costner had more time talking nonsense. And don’t get me start with Will Smith’s fake tears.

You would think with all of the success from Korean movies and TV, the Academy awards would be more sensitive to people who do not speak English well.

This film deserved the Oscar for best picture and not the mediocre CODA, on the other hand regarding the speech they cut many and yet they let Will Smith make that speech so long and so pitiful in tone of moralistic telepreacher.

Exactly.very disrespectful.they cut him off when his speech was clearly not finished..and didnt even bother to stop the music. Poor guy he really wanted to thank more ppl n give a proper speech

As a Japanese who learns English, I'm so fascinated how accurate and understandable the translator conveyed what Hamaguchi-san told the reporters. I'm curious who she is. Amazing job.

Yes, she was terrific! I speak both languages with equal native fluency and I wholeheartedly agree. She may be the best interpreter I've ever seen in action!

Drive My Car deserved to sweep all four of the nominations it got. It was the best film of 2021, and there needs to be more films as empathetic and attuned to the intimacies of human beings being made.

Hamaguchi's film, Happy Hour, is 5 hours long, so 3 hours is short. People binge series on Netflix etc all the time, so I don't understand why everyone freaks out about a movie that is longer than 120 minutes.

People are addicted to movies longer than 2 hours, only if they are marvel or dc adaptions. Any others, they whine because their superhero characters are not in it.

["so I don't understand why everyone freaks out about a movie that is longer than 120 minutes."]
Maybe the average human attention span just drops off after a certain point. It also has to do with fitting the movie into your personal schedule. If I had to watch that 5-hour movie, I wouldn't do it on a work night and definitely on my next day off instead.

People have different tastes and attention span. I used to be like those people who can't stand movies that are more than 2 hours but overtime, i learnt to appreciate movies that are geared towards art than commercial success. Give the people who are used to binge series or watch marvel movies some time. I'm sure they'll come around

It's really interesting the point he made about if he had made it shorter it would've felt longer. I actually liked the movie, the last theater scene hit me really hard. It felt very long for me though, halfway through it. Then until it got to the end I really didn't feel it much. I'm glad he got an award and want to watch more from him.

Not surprising at all since Japanese cinema has not only paved the way for East Asian cinema, but inspired so many filmmakers, great directors like Martin Scorsese and George Lucas was inspired by Kurosawa’s films or John Lassetrr and Wes Anderson who absolutely fan boys for Miyazaki’s films. And just a couple examples! So many more references that will make this comment too long to justify Japan’s impact in world cinema!

Heard that the Uncle Vanya production in the movie was originally set in Busan, South Korea with the director already finished location scouting. I love the movie as is (actually wish for longer cut with whole performance of the play), but am dying to know if the driver would have been cast as a Korean character.

LA Weekly Asia was caught in the restroom! Oops. I don't think the Academy meant any disrespect during Hamaguchi's speech. The way he said "Thank you" was in a very conclusive intonation. As a native English speaker, yes, it sounded like he was done. Yes, English isn't his first language, but it's totally understandable why they would think he was done. Mistakes happen. It doesn't mean it's automatically meant to be disrespectful.

A speech focused solely on thanking those he worked with to make the film, and the Oscars still try to play him off. Fucking disrespectful.
Meanwhile they'll let every other winner go on long political tirades that have nothing to do with the movie they won an award for and won't cut it off at all.
    The Oscars are a joke.

between the pressure caused by the time limit they had, the speed of speech and constantly hoping between two languages on the fly. She did a terrific job. She might have missed out some minor points but doesn't affect the integrity of the answers that much. Please understand that it's an extremely difficult job. They were on a time crunch and she's translating for a movie director; not a politician.
