Most people in closet: I'm gonna take this opportunity to talk about my favorite films
Hamaguchi: it's shopping time bitches!
I'm so proud of this guy.
I would do the same.
Awesome comment!
This is the whole point of it, I know you're complaining. This was what I'd do if I did.
I used to think this was just a library-type arrangement and they were renting all they wanted. Now I'm not sure if they're buying them or Criterion is generous enough to give them these titles for free.
My guy wasted no time talking, just kept filling that bag.😂 No need to apologize, my friend, you're literally all of us.😊
💯 and his eyes were huge 👀 like a kid at a toy store. I love seeing this excitement
haha. Amazing, This would be me. And definitely nabbing some boxsets
Damn he took another Cassavettes box just for a souvenir talking about taking advantage of a good situation
There is a mistranslation in the subtitle section.
He's not apologizing🙂↔️
In fact, he says "I guess so" in that part
@@user-vr8qd2fe1k This is good to know. Since learning French it's been crazy watching films and getting the true meaning of the dialogue. Often a lot is lost in translation.
Taking a whole-ass boxset he already has "as a souvenir." What a fucking legend
This man was on a mission.
This is the first one of these videos in which I actually feared for the health of the Criterion shopping bag.
He thought ahead of time and opted for triple-stitching
Criterion : Take as many movies you want
Ryusuke : Yes.
For some reason, his voice is having an ASMR effect on me.
Fr this video relaxed me
For real! He has a really nice assertive yet calming voice.
Me too. Very calming voice.
I know. I watch this almost every night before I fall asleep!
Dude's like, "I already have this and I also want another one."
The power of Cassavetes 🤙🏼
Sorry, dear viewers, no closet videos in the upcoming weeks, have to restock!😂
Please, invite Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Would be amazing!
It’s nice to see someone like Ryusuke Hamaguchi getting tons of films from Japanese classics to art house films.
It’s like he’s getting one of everything.
Damn, he made out pretty well. LOL. Can't blame him. If you even get in that room just once you're extremely lucky, grab all you can.
It feels so refreshing and nice when a guest speaks in their own language. They have a different freedom and can really discuss the films they pick in a different way. Also japanese has a certain melody to it that i like.
I love it when someone takes a bunch of stuff. I just feel like they are so into film and that they just cant help themselves when presented with the opportunity to be a kid in a candy store so to speak. It really speaks to the love of film that need and that want to just grab a bunch of amazing films.
I don’t think, I’ve ever noticed anybody expressed gratitude so openly, and so frequently in these. I think it’s awesome! It’s probably my favorite part.
You’re not familiar with Japanese culture, obviously
@@waynedexter why I’m here. Learn learn learn.
@@jamesgwarrior1981be quiet kid
@@YorgosL1 as a kid I thought I was Malachi from Children of the Corn. The teddy ain’t make it 🌽 🔪 🧸 🩸
The translation is not exactly accurate, though.
He says 頂いていきますmany times in this video, which was subtitled several times as “thank you very much”. But the Japanese phrase actually means “I’m gonna take this one” in somewhat polite manner.
Hamaguchi's really racking it up, lol. The first one I was shocked but this one - really shows how much of a film nerd he is. If I was in the Criterion Closet I'll also ransack it like him
My Darling Clementine (1946) is a masterpiece. Love seeing a John Ford classic western get picked. Ryusuke has great taste!
love a director who is clearly a big film buff
I’ve only seen Drive My Car by him, wow what a great movie. I’ve been meaning to check out more of his movies. So cathartic seeing him go HAM in the criterion closet, I totally would! 😂
You should check out Happy hour, Evil does not exist.
@@Twoseconds001noted!!!
This reminds me of me, the first time going to a Barnes and Noble during the half off sale about ten years ago. Back then the $8 off coupons worked with the sale and the 10% member discount. Criterion Blu-rays for $10.64 after tax, those were the days! 😂
Very diverse choices.
These are legitimately the best videos on youtube. It's so fucking interesting to see the influences of my favorite actors/director/musicians
"Late Spring" as the first pick had me doing that thing you see in GIFs where Leonardo DiCaprio points at the screen and makes an excited face. What a great, great movie that is!
yes to: Late Spring, Beau Travail, Until the End of the World, Floating Weeds, and My Darling
he’s got taste for days man
a sign of supreme skill - bringing the closet to the point where the discs began to fall
Love it! Feels like he's shopping for all of us - I won't let you down!!
First off, never apologize for taking lots of Criterion Films...we love it! I love his diverse tastes and the way he explains why he loves it.
I love how he goes straight for the box sets lol
Hamaguchi while picking up Cure: "I'm in it so I'm gonna get it"
Fascinating picks by a master filmmaker.
one of the great contemporary film makers. Drive My Car is still the best film of the decade so far
happy hour remains unmatched. his new one was really good, maybe his best ending of them all. love the guy.
HAPPY HOUR fans remaining winning
Omg he has amazing taste
Late Spring is the most beautiful piece of art of all time. Just incredible!
Man came to complete his collection. Respect.
One of the best selections I’ve seen!
This is how you do it. A superb example of Japanese focus and efficiency.
One of our greatest artists working today
Another living legend
Wow!!! Someone get, him another bag!!!
Love how he starts to laugh mentioning James Mason losing it in “Bigger Than Life”. I can’t wait to see “Evil Does Not Exist”. This guy is in the pantheon!
Forget how many he took, the man knows cinema
Reminded me of the days when people would win a minute to run around a shop with a trolley and get as much as they can.
Probably my favorite closet pick. He seems soo grateful for the opportunity and just keeps shopping. I would be doing the same thing
One of my favourite aspects of the closet is how humbled almost everyone is once they step into that cathedral of film. Mr. Hamaguchi is a fine example of that.
God, I love art.
Delightful!! My shopping list just got longer
One of the new greats, Hamaguchi is here to stay. Drive My Car and Happy Hour are incredible
The Rhythm Of The Night scene at end of Beau Travail one of the most memorable scenes ever filmed.
That's a fulfilling haul, he didn't shy away, nor did he gluttonous. Very apt.
Just watched Evil Does Not Exist yesterday. Ya'll really need to see it. By the end of it, absolutely floored.
oooh this is a real cool one. Every now and then I like to check the Criterion section in Barnes and Noble and blind pick a film I've never heard of, or at least know very little about, and add it to my collection. I grabbed Drive My Car one day and it's an all time favorite of mine.
Floating Weeds - one of the greatest films of all time. Loved watching this closet pick.
love this man
Dude almost went to grab another bag . 🤣
I love that he announces the title and director. Most don't.
Ryusuke Hamaguchi, you are all of us!
Bang and he kicks off with my favourite film. So good. His last two films are solid gold and Eiko Ishibashi's scores are sublime. I'm still sick to the stomach that I had to sell my JC Five Films DVD box set many years ago. Still broke and they're hard to get in the UK. One day...
Heaven can wait, this Late Spring Ryusuke will pick souvenirs Until the end of the world coz its Bigger than life for him. Beau travail!
Damn Ryusuke cleaned the closet out!
One of my favorite directors
im cheering him on this is exactly what i would do. live my dream buddy
My guy was just filling up that bag! He didn't talk about the movies even. Here's the title, director, maybe actor, ah that's enough, I'll put it in the bag now haha
Best Japanese movie Director working today
Almost. But Kore-eda has a bigger schlong.
When he mentioned that it wasnt his first time in the closet, I remember the criterion twitter account posting a polaroid picture of him in the closet in 2021 because I waited for it to be posted lol. I wonder if they didnt film that or just wasn't able to release it for some reason.
my man was spinning out of control... BIGGER THAN LIFE moment
Amazing picks!
This clip is a registration of a robbery lol.
This might be one of the larger closet hauls in recent history. The dude cleaned up!
This is how you do it. Get in that closet like you own it...and take everything! 🤣 Loved this one!
refreshing, If you cross the zone in Stalker and enter the room of wishes, not the time for restraint
Wish I could experience La Haine for the very first time like he’s about to.
No unnecessary commentary n showing off .just plain picking of titles..this is how it is done..best pick in a long while
saw "La Haine" in college. Definitely not an easy movie to watch
Can trust Criterion at this point with subtitles.
Was anybody else wondering how he was gonna get that lot through customs?
I have a feel Hamaguchi-san pretended not to understand the translator when they said there was a limit of five blurays per person.
Fellow man of culture 👌🏻
Bigger Than Life with bonus features. Awesome Sauce
Hey Criterion!! Get Hirokazu Koreeda (Shoplifters, Like Father, Like Son) to do one of these!
I love this guy!
Asako & I is such a beautiful movie
This had me smiling. Is that the biggest haul yet?
I seem to remember Cate Blanchett and Todd Field both took way more in their video.
I think Isabelle Huppert hauled a lot of films as well. Legend!
Snagging those box sets.
Everyone should bow when mentioning John Cassavettes' name
You just know he already has a taste.
This is so fun! I love his energy.
Delightful
brother would take the whole closet if he could 😭😭😭
It is his second visit. He already got a bookshelf
Supermarket Sweep, Criterion edition 😂
In this moment, in my opinion, he and Lee Chang Dong are the best directors in the world.
I would add Weerasethakul.
Pedro Costa & Wang Bing
Jia Zhang Ke, Christian Petzold, and Hirokazu Koreeda are in with a shout for that title as well.
Happy shopper!
Customer is always right!
Heaven Can Wait is incredible, this guy cinemas
Less a criterion Closet more a supermarket sweep! how many did he take?
The Closet is close for a few days awaiting the next delivery
He says little, takes a lot, and - more than just about any other person in the CC - shows us that movies are an universal form of communication.
My boy did absolute DAMAGE to the closet lmaoooo this might be my favorite one yet
I’m here for the ASMR 🙏
10% movie talk 90% itadakimasu
Love to see the grabbers!
😊 great
I could have hung out with this fellow for hours in the Criterion Closet. Excellent picks! I haven't watched 'The End of the World' since early 90s, so I'll try to find the 4 hour version.
