- Unicorn Overlord reviewed by Eric Zalewski on PlayStation 5, also available on Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
Most of Unicorn Overlord’s issues end up feeling like nothing more than nitpicks. The tactical combat system is unique and complex while also being easy to understand, expertly blending mechanics from many of its peers with smart new additions of its own. The interesting terrain across the continent of Fevrith makes every fight feel unique, with some of the best map gimmicks in any strategy RPG. And because the campaign is told through the eyes of a diverse and creative cast, its tropey fantasy story is elevated in a way that a more traditional storytelling style wouldn't manage. The shorter, more personal stories work wonderfully to support a loop of exploration and liberation that always leaves you begging to see one more tale told, one more town rebuilt, and one more battle fought.

before you buy: you can play the DEMO for 8 hours - so play that first to see if ya like it
Absolutely,the demo was great.I like that there are sooo many different characters to choose from.
Just to inform, its 5 hours after the tutorial. Time also doesn’t countdown in Menus.

As a fire emblem fan and someone who has put over 24 hours into this game already, this is definitely a 9-10 score game. This game is worth your money.

It bums me out that we can’t just describe the combat as being like Ogre Battle. An under appreciated gem.
FFT did it so much better though.

Ogre Battle needs to be revived. In this day and age, the series would take off way more since we are in an age of RPG games
FFT doesn't even have the same gameplay as Ogre Battle and Ogre Battle 64

But yeah Infinite Wealth, FF7 Rebirth, P3 Reload, Granblue Fantasy Relink, Unicorn Overlord, and Dragons Dogma 2 next. THEN we have the dlc drop for Elden Ring in a few months.
Playing this on the highest difficulty is a treat the amount of micro managing you have to do before a fight for the best possible outcome is amazing and satisfying

Suikoden 1 and 2 remasters are supposedly coming this year.
This game should get a massive score boost due to its demo. It was really refreshing and honestly pretty boastful of them. It's not every day a limited story strategy game can let you play for 7 hours and still have countless more to enjoy.
The demo was proof the game was going to be amazing. I've never played a demo that gave me so much time and so much to do in that time. Can't wait.
This is game of the year material. It’s refreshing to have something unique in gaming today.
Put this video on in the background just to have something to listen to while working, now this is on my wishlist for when it goes on sale in a couple months lol

They underestimate the PC audience. The biggest target group for strategy games. Maybe they are afraid of competition?
@@flunkyballs4610 No, they're afraid of development costs. Vanillaware isn't a large company backed by deep pocket investors. They're small. This game took 10 years to develop, and not only did they run out of money while doing so, the CEO started dipping into his personal funds to get them across the finish line. This is publicly available info if you don't believe me.
Another even 6 months to make a viable PC port may have bankrupted them, or at least caused significant financial hardship. This is not a AAA studio. Don't expect AAA resources.

@@flunkyballs4610 Its a japanese company. People haven't learned japans focus has always been consoles. They are more modern of course abit with doing PC as well of course but some japanese devs/publishers prefer to only work on releasing games for consoles. Even then its specific consoles that are japanese meaning just playstation or switch, not xbox since they are western and not popular in japan. Its lucky that all consoles got this game to begin with. They don't understimate the PC audience, they have their preference and resources and say of what they want to release on and sometimes PC gets left out. Could be those numbers aren't high as you think for sales as a possibility too. But here as long as you got any console you can play it so that's great.

Definitely going to pick this game up. Reminds me of Ogre Battle 64, Fire Emblem, and Advanced Wars all wrapped up in a beautiful and unique modern JRPG.

The visual presentation of combat reminds me so much of Valkyrie profile from PS one. One of my favorite things about that game was the voice acting, the character art, character designed, presentation and overall vibe of the world. I’m definitely buying this!

Vanillaware literally ran out of money during the development of this game. They probably want you to buy it.
Surprised it was not mentioned that you can trigger things on the exploration map that can effect a battle map.

The hard for this game is how much can you remember your squad or team. It feel real commander style tactics.
My strategy was to make thematically cohesive teams as much as possible (one team with all Knights of the Rose, one team will all goth characters, one team with all rogues and outlaws, one team with all red-haired characters...), and then just use red and blue pendants and other items to balance and optimize their strength
Played the demo for 7 hours. Amazing.

I'm trying to get use to the combat in the demo. Very weird for me to not have direct input during combat and just letting the system take the wheel.

It is sad to have to say this, but another big plus of the game is that you don't have content locked behind microtransactions. It's just a great game.

Game of the year for me. The art style is absolutely stunning, story and characters are fantastic (voice acting too) and the gameplay is so much fun. If you loved ogre battle and always wanted a (spiritual) sequel that is superior in every way then this is it! Best strategy rpg I’ve ever played

Yes, I’m aware Aegis Rim, Vanillaware’s various remasters/remakes and their many unannounced projects all contributed to the long development cycle but still, this game spent 10 years in oven and imo, it shows.
13 sentinels was one of the greatest games of all time

In the demo, you don't walk around cities and towns, but you do get the pop up having to select which shop you want to go to.

It uses more of Ogre Battle, but that is an on game that likely isn't something you would remember.
Gameplay reminds me of Fire Emblem with a huge dash of Heroes of Might And Magic 3 particularly with the over world portion. Such an incredible game.
This feels like the very best love letter to Ogre Battle : March of the Black Queen and Fire Emblem, cannot wait to play the full version 😁
This is one of those games that must be begged to come to PC. All of Vanillaware's games should get port/remasters, for that matter.

This is looking like a love letter to one of my favorite games, Suikoden V. The art style is definitely different but the plot to my understanding and the blend of turn for turn and RTS rpg are both very similar. Also the option to recruit side characters for your army.
Vanillaware, why have you not released a game on PC since 2006??? This would make a ton of money on PC.

What do you mean? It's super easy to play it on PC if you know how to work an emulator.
It's been decades of Vanillaware games and unfortunately it doesn't really look like they will ever put their games on PC, so emulating it is really the only option to play it on PC at this point
