    I have depression, and ADHD, and a few other disorders that make cleaning difficult. Usually either motivation, or task paralysis, but I've found if I watch one or two of your videos, I want to body double, and end up with motivation/ability to at least get one big thing done.
    I'm 31, and it's just now I've found a way to manage.

    When you talk about the bad advice given to hoarders, it sounds so familiar to me. I've heard the same kind of talk towards autistic people that they need to just "stop acting weird" and "get their act together", or even "autism isn't real; it's just an excuse for kids who behave badly". It can be amazing the lack of empathy out there for people who are struggling. I'm glad your channel explains what people are going through in these situations.

    Until this video, I was keeping my wolves stacked in a tall, thin utility closet. I've now switched to a tub and you're absolutely correct! It's much, much more convenient! I can now move them around the house "as needed", and no longer need to assist the ones on the top of the stack down to the floor - which wastes valuable time if there's an emergency where they are needed!

    Can’t wait for that live wolf brushing- and I’ve also heard that storing them in a single tub is best because when you release multiple wolf tubs at once they have to stop and make the plan of attack before defending the house- doing a single tub insures they know the plan out the gate.

    I rarely comment on videos, but I'm absolutely in love with this channel! I too am autistic, and my parents in law are hoarders - not nearly as severe as this, but they have many of the same issues as this couple. Father in law has MS, so he can't move super well (and the condition has only gone down hill over the years), and mother in law has a whole smattering of mental health issues that interfere with her quality of living. They moved to an apartment several years back, and in the process helped reduce the hoard - however, most of it went to a storage unit. Recently, MIL invited my husband and his brother over to the unit to start throwing things out. "Be tough!" she said, and they were pretty tough. It was hard for her to let go of those items, but watching this channel has shown me just how proud I should be of her and her strides towards improving herself. Thank you!

    I actually love that you don't always clean everything - it shows people the stages and that you have to start somewhere, something is better than nothing. A hoarding situation this bad, they will be lucky not to have to do major renovations. Still, carpets should come out, walls should be painted, upholstered furniture replaced, etc., but that's too often beyond the budget of a pensioner. Good on you for making their home more liveable. With what you are saving them, they might be able to get some of the other stuff done.

    • @lucsmith2092
      @lucsmith2092 9 місяців тому

      Why replace all the carpet? The living room at least doesn’t look to be in super bad condition and could possibly be good with stain removal soaking, and a shampoo/ steam clean? I guess it depends on how bad the mouse stuff was.

    • @andrewbrendan1579
      @andrewbrendan1579 9 місяців тому +13

      @@lucsmith2092 I used to clean rugs professionally and my outlook is that the carpeting needs to be removed: possibly years of mouse waste; maybe bird droppings also; dust and dirt over what has probably been many years and the biohazard of needles along with ordinary wear and tear. Interesting the connection between hoarder disorders and cleaning supplies and creative desires.

    • @SMTRodent
      @SMTRodent 9 місяців тому +10

      I ended up with a cleaning supply hoard during a bad patch - because the air fresheners I like kept dropping behind a piece of furniture! So I'd be 'out' and get more. I had thirty cans of air freshener by the time I got better and pulled it out. I'm down to half a dozen by now. The same with handwash, it was behind some garden bags in the kitchen sink cupboard so I'd be 'out' and buy a three-pack and shove two away, and just plain forget. Now I am sure I have only two in there because I looked for a stash *first*.
      And I have art stuff too. This video's a definite warning to me to keep on my game of throwing things out on a regular basis and trying to do inventory when I need cleaning supplies. The art stuff is back down to nearly nothing and I don't buy any now. Or notebooks! I'm using those up too and they have an actual place to be. And the sink has always been clear - I never got to that point. But seeing how it could so easily creep up... *shiver*.

She lived through the depression and everything had value. It was packed so tight. My mother was raised in that mess and hated it. She was such an extreme NOT hoarder person, not sure how to word that. We had a full basement with only one box of ornaments in it and the fake Christmas tree, a ping pong table and washer/dryer. My children and I are all extremely neat, non-hoarder people. I can’t wait to see that living room totally cleaned and all those books neatly displayed on that lady’s bookshelves. I love how you explained the brain situation for people suffering from this disorder. My whole 33 year career in education has been in the area of dyslexia intervention and assessment. The intervention involves therapy that (like the treatment you described) basically reroutes and builds new neural pathways. When explaining the treatment to parents I always compare it to going to a personal trainer. You’re not going to get into shape over night (I wish), but with consistent intervention work over time you absolutely can get readers to become fluent. They may tire out a bit more quickly because it doesn’t disappear…but the right therapy in any situation can be life changing and allow people to live normal (or close to normal) lives. You’re a good man Mr. Midwest Spin Kicker. Eliminating stigma is a huge and sometimes overlooked piece to healing. I pray for this couple to continue to work through this alongside you. My mom had a tumor in her frontal lobe, and although it was a benign tumor, it was huge, and she had a stroke when she had it removed. On top of that, she already has ADHD, so it was like a double whammy. She also has a traumatic history, and has become completely disabled because of the tumor and stroke. My mom was never a lazy person and she was a nurse and a very excellent one.
    I'm telling this story because I want others to know that people with these kind of hoarding problems do almost always have significant issues that lead to it, and I appreciate what you do for those people, and how kind and compassionate you are.

    Bless you for helping people with these hoarding disorders. It is a massive job that many people just won't do and it is exhausting. After my Grandfather passed, my Grandma stopped letting us into her home, one night she had an emergency and i had to go in and was stunned! Fortunately there were no biohazards but this huge house was filled with a massive amount of stuff in every room. I was able with the help of family to get her to agree to let go of enough stuff to make it livable. Unfortunately the cycle continues because once Grandma passed my uncle insists that everything of hers except clothes and costume jewelry is kept so if you ever travel to the southeast let me know

    I read a book last year for creatives about how if you don't create, you will consume. It was mostly talking about social media consumption, but I think to also applies to impulse purchasing. I think many artists struggle with buying the things to make something, feeling overwhelmed or depressed, and never actually following through with the creation. Then you buy more to kick start it or fill the creation void with consumption while never getting rid of the old supplies and its an endless cycle. This is just what i thought of when you said you find a lot of craft materials in houses of this state.

    We dealt with bed bugs a couple years ago. We had new living room furniture delivered about a week before I went into labor with our first baby and didn’t realize the couches were infested with bed bugs. It was an absolute nightmare bringing a newborn home to that. Luckily he never got bit, only me, but we were fortunate to have good friends who work at a local furniture store that were willing to take our couches (and mattresses just to be safe) in and heat treat them for about 16 hours. We haven’t had a problem since but I know how awful it is living with those things. Hopefully this family is able to get rid of theirs as well.

    I can't begin to imagine how trapped this couple must have felt before you came along. Physically unable to move freely in their own home; betrayed by their bodies and mind and personal items. It would have seemed so hopeless. Being surrounded by trash makes you feel like trash yourself.
    Those hoarder shows are awful. They thrive on drama, intentionally upsetting the families involved. Giving the homeowner three days to clean up 30yrs is an impossible feat. The crew is never trustworthy, always throwing away things they've been specifically told not to. Family member intentionally destroying things just so they can throw them away.... it's no wonder the homeowners have trust issues to begin with. Cruel, cruel shows. Every shovel full needs to be treated as though there are $100 bills scattered throughout the hoard. I know it just looks like discarded potato chip bags and tissues, but there's more than that buried in all that mess.

    Our garage and upstairs need help. We were working on the upstairs, when my level nine hoarder mom passed, and I brought home some of her stuff mostly jewelry and jewelry making supplies. My mom was a cardinal lover too and everyone called her the Redbird lady, or mom. We had to deal with her bedroom which was very full from floor to ceiling and my adopted brother, everyday used to clear her a spot to sleep on her bed, there was a small path to her bed. It was full from floor to ceiling. It was disheartening to see. At the time of her death we were caring for my father in law, until he passed three years later. I can see where it can easily get out of hand especially after deaths. Needless to say we didn't finish the upstairs or the garage, and since then my husband's dad passed, and we still have some of his stuff up there, along with our stuff too, some of my mom's and I believe there's a few things of his mom's too. Then I got sick three years ago, so I am not much help to my hubby, actually it overwhelms me because my husband is all over the place when he's trying to deal with it too. The garage needs to be done first, then the upstairs family room. A garage sale would be nice, but I know that'll never happen. I'm watching your videos hoping it can motivate both of us as well. You're amazing, and do a great job and service.

    It really sounds like they could do with adult social services helping them out. Things such as getting them regular healthy meals; seeing that medications are taken correctly; weekly house cleaning etc. (I cracked my ribs, Ie nowhere near as major as this, and was really battling after a few months as they were frequently cracking again from basic housework. I had a nurse aid in to help me for four mornings a week for a few months, and it made a HUGE difference.) Having this help to clean the house out, and then regular weekly physical help, will make such as massive difference in their lives.
