HR Wakefield stories are superb, thank you Jasper for bringing these forward so well. Cheers T

My favourite bits were “sensible platitudes” and “poured a tumbler of whiskey and drank it:” Wakefield had a dry sense of humour. : )

This was the most lighthearted horrible tale I have ever heard. It afforded me laughter among the shudders.

Along with M.R James, for me H. Russell Wakefield is one of the absolute best, albeit more uneven, teller of ghostly tales! I look forward to listening to your rendition.

Another story new to me. My late husband was a huge Lovecraft fan, and I have lately discovered that I enjoy a Weird Tale or two these days. Classic horror and the macabre are very strange comforts to me, and I suspect there is a very natural catharsis that takes place when reading, or listening to, these kinds of stories - the chilling comfort that the fictional events are being narrated by a survivor, or a safe third-party. Very interesting, and quite enjoyable. Thank you.

Thanks Blue! I agree, and I think it's especially true when the stories are of a certain vintage and therefore even more removed. As much as I try to amplify the chills, most of these stories are like being wrapped up in a nice warm blanket.

@@EnCryptedHorror Indeed. And hopefully the blanket isn't warm because it's on fire... : D

Absolute brilliant choice & rendition of story! H. R. Wakefield was one, when at the top of his game, who could match the great M. R. James. HR was one of the most inventive horror writers & also was one of the funniest(dark humour). I loved this great verbal performance! 😎!!

Thanks Terry! A choice I think you suggested! 🙂 I agree - very funny at times. One of my favourite lines in this one concerns "the light cries provoked by the tart embraces of the North Sea". As someone prone to a dip, it resonated 😆

I did send in the suggestion...but only because you'd blow it up & represent magnificently- which you did- Bravo!

Another splendid tale. I have been listening to playlists of your narratives as I work at my desk, and find your readings to be both engaging and to have an invigorating effect upon my art. Please do keep up the good work!

Great, beautiful, and at times sad story.
Fantastic narration! This is a fantastic rendition of this tale. Listening to your narrations are like sitting by the fireside with a good scotch while a friend or relative tells a wonderful tale.
    Thanks!

I just discovered Wakefield -thanks to your work.
Love the sarcastic humor and keen (if cynial) observation of human nature and behavior he exhibits.

I found one interesting tidbit about *Wakefield* it is said shortly before he died he destroyed all photographs, manuscripts & papers related to himself (this according to his wife) as he was twice married I assume it was his 2nd wife who said this about him. The most interesting character in this story is the killer.

Jane Austen's sister did the same thing after Jane's death (at her request)
That's why there so little of her personal life out there. Most biographies have to teach to her family or have to rely on second hand anecdotes
