In school people get's judged by their ability to spell and read. If you aren't able to do it, you will be labeled as stupid, lazy, worthless and the list goes on. Even if you know that it's not true, it will immensely damage a persons selfesteem and scar them for life, and if a person doesn't treat these psychological scar. I'm a primary teacher and I have to say that dyslexic pupils have my greatest respect. I've yet to meet a child with dyslexia who doesn't put 110% into their education, and knowing how much more difficult the whole curriculum is (due to it being very word and sight heavy) I am always amazed at their effort and results despite their condition. Last year I had a heart to heart with a young girl in my class who had been successfully concealing her dyslexia, previous teachers had just presumed she wasn't as smart as others and put her in the lowest groups. However, she is so witty and creative, finally it just clicked for me one day and she is now on a specialised programme. She was so embarrassed that she had been 'found out', but her parents and I explained why she had no reason to be ashamed - in fact, she should be proud of how much she has achieved despite her disadvantage. She hailed Steven Spielberg - arguably the best known director alive today and the man behind her favourite movie, E.T. - as her new hero as he is one of the many people out there today proving dyslexia doesn't stop people from doing great things.
Someone in this video mentioned ignorance - absolutely, the people who say those things written on those slips are merely showing their lack of knowledge.

There are people out there without the ability to empathise with anyone different to them - the fact that some of those people get themselves into responsible positions, like doctors and teachers, is frightening. Your teacher sounds like a moron, I hope you had others at school who actually understood what dyslexia was and gave you a more enjoyable education! As for folk who say they wouldn't date a dyslexic person, I'd respond that you don't want to date someone who, by thinking that, is so clearly narrow-minded, idiotic and not worth the time! :)
You're better than those people, mate!

guys could someone tell me if I’m dyslexic it till I was 10/9 to be able to read a book for 3/4 year olds.
Math paper is just my worse night mare
Some how I have it in my brain that 4=a 7=f
      E a u o like to be each other
The trick for left and right doesn’t work coz how am I supposed to tell which one is the L
I write words by just writing the 1st letters
I can not use a keyboard but a computer is the only way I can get spell check
I can miss full sentences and words when writing
And what is the difference between b and d, F and E, q and p
I can’t for the life of me do my alphabet
      I count using litters
Some fonts just don’t work for me even if it’s like a “normal” font
I say the time is forty five past 2 instead of saying thifteen to three
And paragraphs like to be one massive piece of sgigurlly line
I can read the same line other and other and it won’t make sense
My mom can say something to me and I will have to repeat it in my head for ages for to make sense some times I have to tell her to repeat it.
      My uncle had dyslexia
And my mom is sure I don’t have it but my friends are certain I do
The list can go one but I my brain hurts now so yeah
Edit I also stutter a lot and sometimes I can’t speak coz the words won’t go into my head

I cant spell check for myself, when i write, i know how it is suppose to be written like but eventually i cant arrange the letters according to what it suppose to be like. Like mess up the letters, but the most funniest thing is when i spell check and read it again i could not detect it at all, but when my teacher read it, she dont know what im trying to spell actually or trying to tell 😂😂, she called out to me and pointed out a lot of ununderstanding words. Up to this day (im 18) i still have problems to spell friend properly, i need to pronounce the letter and spell check it like 3 times before i satisfied, i get so confused whether i or e comes first. Not just that, i could not determine left or right. I am struggling with it so much...i just cant do it. When people determine something between left or right like in a blink of eyes, i was amazed cause i need to look at my hands and position or rotate my body according to my hands just to determine it, and it was hard cause i need to do it a lot of times just for a single thing, i am struggling with it so so so bad

I have numerical dyslexia (dyscalculia) and its so frustrating because a lot of people don't realize the "other" symptoms: not getting things like distance, analog clocks, counting graph paper lines, messing up time. It's passed off as "dyslexia doesn't have extra symptoms", but 1. they do, and 2. even if they didn't that has no bearing on me. Thank you so much for sharing this!

      @PhoenixplaysX 6 років тому +4

i'm dyslexic and its always been numbers the main issue, I can read and write fine, i dont struggle with reading at all and just some spelling and grammar issues (sometimes i write letters or whole words backwards but its not as common as i used to) for me it was and always has been like a mental block with numbers, they confuse me and as people describe letters and words "moving about the page" when they try to read with dyslexia, numbers do that for me. not saying i'm problem free with writing though.
dyslexia is much more than just words and numbers though, it can cause difficulty with planning and organisation, memory and being easily distracted.

I'm dyslexic and I am an excellent writer in my native language, but when I have to switch to another language (I am a trilingual) it's super frustrating because I have to remember spelling, grammar, pronunciation and frequently I have to stop and check if I haven't messed up anything. So i was put in a group of kids that where very special needs, each year i got to go to the next grade level not because i earned it. They said it was the right thing to do. I didn't find out i was dyslexic until my girls were diagnosed with it. I still don't get the spelling but when kids where learning what to use like ( their or there - were or where) because i didn't get that part of grammar I'm never sure witch one to ues. But here is the good part when i got a job i ended up with a secretary that did all of my writing for me. I was making over $70,000 a year.

I can read now but it's taken all my life to get where I'm at today take a good look at my text you'll see I will not use big words and some words are not even a word. the way I can explain to anyone I learned how to read my site. I remember the words. I still get my spelling wrong and my grammar but most people can read what I'm texting to say. Most people don't know I can't spell because I'm dyslexic but now I type thur my phone if it's not a word I use often you may think I just missed spelled a word but really I don't or didn't know that I spelled it wrong. For some reason door open to me when other would work their butt off, it's been hard all my life but I can read most of what people are texting to say if I don't I'll ask someone to read it to me.

I’m dyslexic, I’m Mexican so I learnt two languages and I have two degrees 🙂 fortunately both my parents are educational psychologist so they taught me how to read and write with the Orton Gillingham method as well as several gestalt exercises so my dyslexia is a part of me but thnx to my parents it’s not really that prominent in my life. You can’t cure dyslexia but you can learn how to get better and beat it 😇

Does she have a coloured overlay that can help. Try not to correct her spelling it can get frustrating. If your studying a book and she's struggling audiobook can help theres a lot on UA-cam. A lot of us struggle reading out loud so if your alone with her read with her remind her of how well she's doing but not to much as it can make it feel like a child. Reading pens, schools may supply them they help on words that we can't work out. Coloured pens for notes. Books can help reading and can be enjoyable or if that's not her thing audiobooks .

Being dyslexic in the 80's and 90's was horrible. No one was as understanding of it as they are today. I never got extra time and was allways seen as an idiot. My entire life. The worst part was being treated as though it was simply something I could correct. That eventually I would be "normal" and if I wasn't then it was MY fault. I never felt more tortured then the day I was asked by my mother to use the last of her money (we were vary poor) to buy 4 dozen eggs and a gallon of milk. I returned home with 4 gallons of milk and a dozen of eggs. My father punished me and beat me for my mistake. I have allways felt more ignorant then everyone around me because I can not spell correctly (auto correct is amazing btw😅) but regardless I have grown into an amazing adult. While I may not have been lucky enough to go to college or get a good start in life because of my dyslexia, I have (thanks to technology and the internet) grown significantly intelligent. To the point were even my worst enamies now admit that I am smarter then them. I feel living my life regarded as "slow" or "lazy" by those who did not understand kept me from a lot of opportunities in life. I am happy to see that my misfortunes will not be effecting others with dyslexia in the future. While I may be working a vary below average job, at least I can now tell people I have dyslexia and not be ashamed. It is no longer seen as a "deficiency" and we are no longer treated like idiots. That is honestly more then a good enough reason to keep living my life.

Even though I'm from the early 90s this is exactly the exeloerience I also had and even though it was beggining to get recognised and taken seriously, the screening and tests were shit. I didn't get diagnosed til a year ago. I had a screening as a kid and it never got picked up. I got ridiculed by teachers and my parents thinking I was vbeing lazy or didn't give a shit or just pretending I couldn't do it. I got ridiculed by friends and peers laughing at me for not expressing my words properly or saying the right sentence and being called dumb for it or special or stupid. So yeah I can imagine circumstances were much worse bck then, but even now regardless of the recognition there are still people struggling.

I'm still on page one at this point. If I speak up and say I'm not done, she wants to give me a couple extra minutes, and I'm still on page one. So, I just don't speak up.

Thus, everything comes out at supersonic speed and sometimes jumbled like I tossed the words into a blender and hit puree. I just speak so fast people have to tell me to slow the eff down so they can follow what I'm saying. I often have to repeat myself at least twice and speak at a pace that feels unnaturally slow to me to be understood.

Just because it's not a visible condition doesn't mean that it's not serious or that people are being dramatic.

When I was in 7th grade, I once wrote a whole report about the loins of Africa and how the loins would roam the great plains in packs. Spellcheck never corrected me. I'm so thankful that my parents proof read the paper before I turned it in. I have several other amusing tales.
Dyslexia is still a struggle to live with sometimes (especially with spelling) but get some help and know your weaknesses and strengths and use it to your advantage. Your brain works differently than other peoples' do and it has some advantages and disadvantages. Learn to live with and use it well. It's not just a terrible burden, it is also a gift. I have dyslexia but because I had help from a young age and was surrounded by supportive people, I am now in vet school (reading all the textbooks is very slow and sucks a lot, and remembering all the Latin and biochemical pathways is terrible) and because of my dyslexia I can think about problems in a different way than other people and how to solve them. And because I do not exactly think in letters and words, I can understand animals a bit better because they also dont think that way.
Here is a website that helps you remember that it is not all bad and you can use dyslexia to your advantage:
    www.dyslexicadvantage.org/
One thing that seriously pisses me off is when parents refuse to have their obviously dyslexic child tested because they don't want them to be "labeled". This is stupid because you can get help and it doesnt matter if you are labled or not if you still have it anyway. Don't turn down help and be aware of what you or your child can acomplish and overcome. We can do it!

I was raised in Alabama, so when I moved west to everyone thought I was stupid because I can't read, write, or speak quickly. (I didn't have much of an accent, but everyone speaks faster outside of the south).
Not to mention shows like duck dynasty and swamp hunter(?) make the stereotype ever worse.

YES! My family pronounces words in a strange way and if I tried to spell things the way I heard them, I looked so stupid. Pecan was pronounced with a B sound and I would write "Bacon" and it was so embarrassing.

People generally make out that the Southerners are stupid in the first place. I actually like their accents though.

That’s how my dyslexia is, I can read perfectly fine. But I struggle to write it down or speak and read out loud.
I worked in a grocery store and I can’t tell you how many times I read the cents before the dollars. People were shocked when I would say $95.10 instead of $10.95 😂

Every third person is dyslexic. Most are undiagnosed. Some have mild dyslexia, some have more severe. I found out i am dyslexic as a young adult. I had difficulties studying at school. My classmates knew i wasn't mentally impaired coz they knew how often i had an open book in front of me, which was never. Living in dorms everyone knows who is studying hard and who isn't. In my exams i got decent grades, average. To my classmates, it simply made no sense. But my teachers were all convinced that i was mentally challenged and that i was stupid until one of my classmates spilled the beans to our class teacher about my study habits. After that the teachers told me i should spend more time studying to get better grades, they made me sit in front an open book after dinner before sleep, but i was miserable, coz half of the sentences i read, made no sense, coz i was reading wrong. It was a waste of time, it didn't help. It only made me miserable and sleep deprived. The only thing that helped, was studying in groups. My classmates would read aloud, we would discuss the subjects, explain to each other and quiz each other. I could learn by listening and i could avoid the torture of reading.

I'm dyslexic and when I was younger like 5, 6, 7 and ,8 I would throw a fit if I had to read and my parents would have to force me but as I got older it was the total opposite and my parents would have to force me to stop reading. Books/reading are my favourite things but still I constantly read the same line over and over again. And some people just assume that if you have dyslexia you don't like to read which is totally not true! Also I found this video so relatable and true.
