I always liked Patsy's character. He was loyal, smart, and could be intimidating when he needed to be. He could've easily wacked Tony but knew it wouldn't be cinematic. Also, it's interesting that before the Sopranos, Patsy's actor Dan Grimoldi wasn't an actor but a math professor
Patsy was my favorite outside of the main cast. He was cool, calm, collected, and basically the strong silent type Tony always strived to be. Even Vito playing for the other side didn’t even bother him because he knew how much Vito was bringing in since he was doing their books. Wouldn’t surprise me if he leads things in Jersey after the final episode.
Patsy the don of New Jersey with one son marrying the Soprano princess and the other son following in his shoes as his protege and uncle Paulie as his underboss.
I prefer the theory that Patsy and Paulie made the deal with Butchie behind Tony's back--and arranged to have him whacked. There are a lot of parallels between Phil and Patsy in that they both lost brothers and throw a lot of blame towards Tony.
Patsy gets the ultimate revenge. NY probably appoints him as head of NJ when they absorb the Pygmy thing, not the walking blunder Paulie. So he takes Tony’s status. But what I haven’t seen mentioned is how he also absorbs Tony’s family into his own with Meadow marrying in and AJ on his way to being a soldier in Jason’s crew. In the end, the Strong Silent Type causes Tony’s head to literally explode and takes everything that was his save for Carmela and her big house with the pool.
''My face will be the last thing you see, not Tony's. It won't be cinematic''. Subtle reference to the Sopranos ending, considering the ending wasn't that cinematic
It's interesting how a character rolling his eyes at another character can completely change a show. And it was very quick and subtle and easy to miss. I'd never noticed Patsie looking at Tony like that until a couple of years ago when I saw it in a video; and I'd binged the show a good dozen times.
I don't think Patsy was behind Tony's death, but I think the way Tony treated him was a big part of why New York removed Tony. We got caught up in Tony's main character syndrome, but you could see the resentment of his crew building out of focus throughout the seasons if you look for it. They were loyal, but weren't happy with his leadership. Tony was all about Tony and didn't really give a damn if the people under him were doing well or not. It caught up with him in the end. The successful bosses, the Carmines, knew they had to keep their people fat and happy.
Blowing all the money they kicked up to him right in front of them all at the tables just showed what a narcissist Tony was, and that had to have made a big impression on his guys, seeing how much their boss respected their work.
@@crashstitches79 basically the equivalent of everyone busting ass all year, making record profits, and all you get is a pizza party, no raise or bonus. Meanwhile your boss buys a Ferrari and takes a three-week vacation with the extra profits y'all made for him. Yeah. Fuck that guy. He's got to GO.
Patsy, yes. I don't think Paulie had the balls, and NY most definitely did not respect him. The only way NY would let Paulie handle something like that is if they knew they could make him take the fall for it.
I always loved the character and appreciated him even more as I rewatched. In a lotta ways he's almost the perfect gangster. And he definitely was in on Tony getting hit. No doubt.
Personally, I don't buy into the idea that Patsy wacked Tony. While Patsy definitely still held animosity towards Tony, I saw his smugness towards the end more so that Tony was forced to respect by Italian customs. As far as motives, by that point Patsy had no real reason to kill Tony, as aside from Paulie he was essentially the de facto Underboss of the family. The only reason he would have Tony wacked at that point would be to seize power, but that doesn't really fit with his character from my perspective.
Patsy doing the receipts while made to put his grief behind him stood out, because firstly only Silvio is someone else who would be bothered and it should he was keeping busy, unlike Chris using drugs or Johnny sack beating a guy up outside a private bar. Patsy I believe saw a clean slate to utilise is full potential and cut Tony Soprano to black.
I thought Don Grimaldi played Patsy very realistically. I would have liked to see him get a little more screen time. I don't think he was involved in whacking Tony at the end I truly think it was New York and payback for the Phil hit which Butch said "do what you've got to do" but it probably didn't sit well with the other families having Phil get whacked that way in front of his wife and grandkid at a gas station. So I think taking Tony out was okay'd and then they just considered it a wash and started over with a new regime. I think New York probably just absorbed the remainder of the Soprano Crew or more likely installed someone as boss and kind of called the shots over NJ at that point. Where NJ was kind of a satellite of the Lupertazzi Family or had a weak boss who gave New York favorable deals on their joint Construction projects. I honestly think Patsy just kind of accepted his brothers death eventually and realized it was part of the life they chose.
I think the lack of screen time was intentional. There's a subplot of a collective growing resentment towards Tony that Chase intentionally left out of focus. Small things minor characters say or do while Chase kept us focused on the drama of Tony's inner circle. I agree that New York was behind Tony's death, but I bet they made sure Patsy and Pauly would be ok with it before they did it. I think Little Carmine was the architect and came back to run the NY family after Phil and Tony were out of the picture.
@@coyotemojo I disagree about Little Carmine after seeing Johnny Sack go to prison. I think he wanted to make his money but stay somewhat below the radar in Florida. He seemed to have a nice home life and I think he was over wanting to be in charge and be a much bigger target for Law Enforcement. I think Butch took over he seemed to be a real gangster and like somebody who wanted to be in charge.
Guys like Patsy ,people get comfortable around them not sensing the danger making it easier for him to figure out who he can trust and who flip flops easily
The thing about Patsy is he can blend in as an average joe. He doesn't look like your typical gangster but hes very smart, calm, and in control (except the time he got drunk and pissed in Tony's pool lol)

I always thought 5:55 was a Poignant Shot/Frame… “Even in death, we are amongst life,” but life, the family moving on without Tony and Carmela’s involvement.

I liked that character. It was entertaining to think about this mild-mannered accountant who also probably murdered people. And who *hasn't* wanted to piss in their boss's swimming pool?
