His attire, keeping a list of belonging (for Yanluo, he keeps a list of people's time of destined death), and the theme of aging and death might all be references. His name might also be translated to "Elder Yan", yet the word "Yanlao" can also mean "belly". Maybe that's because he's a cat anyway.

It seems to me that Yanlao was a DJ in his youth. For how else to explain such a fiery beat and a huge disco ball converted into a claw.
