Chick always brings his signature interpretation of jazz standards. Apart from his incredible compositional flair, the true essence of his style lies the deepest rooted in rhythmic sphere of any jazz musician I've heard (love Mike Brecker's rhythmic prowess too!). Also, Chick's Elektric band (with Patittucci, Weckl, Henderson) rank as my all-time favorite fusion band. Long live Corea, Hancock Jarrett and Metheny. Cheers Chick for your continued inspiration!
Monk was an inventor of bop, even coltrane said playing with monk was difficult because of the range of chords he'd use. The difference is Chick has more influences outside of Jazz in his playing to my ears. Ever way, while Monk did not have the technique that corea has I would write ever off, both are wonderful players who really managed to add to the rhythm side of jazz along with the harmonic side.
It different things! Monk don't know even half of Chick's scales, harmonies, chords... But Monk IS great person, legend and author of this tune. Monk's "Round Midnight" is classic! Chick's "Round Midnight" is evolution of jazz music!
There's no way this is either Novak or Weckl on drums. This is the one-of-a-kind Vinnie Colaiuta, showing he can play in any setting with anybody and do it well, even with very little actual playing time with them. He has always been a consummate professional.
''he sells millions and you sell tacos''. that is funny. that had me laughing. it's amazing when you think of the fine lines that make us different or what we like. but we all can learn from each other.
I think this was a one time gig to record a live for import CD. Now that it's 15 years later, I would love to see Vinnie go on an actual tour with the Acoustic Band and then see how they sound together. Sadly, it probably will never happen.
Because I hear that. :-) Try to listen any Monk's record and any Chick's record - it completely different levels of playing piano, sounding... Or try to play transcriptions of Chick's solos - so many different ways, unexplained to us... Jazz harmony are not statistical, it develops due to musicians like Corea, Hancock, Metheny, Jarrett and many many other...
@Sunderlanding This is a dissonant piece. If you are unable to grasp that simple fact from the piano part alone then you shouldn't be arguing. You may not like it (I don't really like it either for that matter) but it does not mean that the musicians have played it wrong. On the contrary in fact.
One thing about “True Musicians” is they can create music that “Normal” ears like yours cannot grasp or understand. No matter how much you “think” you know remember you don’t. There is a reason he sells millions and you sell tacos.
Yeah, I know that Schoenberg didn't like that name, and it's a strict method of composition, but it's still 'free atonality',you choose the order of the notes right? But I meant that they improvise 'outside' a lot of time, it may sound too atonal to an untrained ear..
Schoenberg, freely? You do realize that strict 12-tone technique is possibly the single most rigidly defined and constricting technique in music (apart from playing an entire piece using only a single note), right?
No. Being 'free' with tonality is very different from being dodecaphonic. In order for a composition to be in strict 12-tone format, all 12 notes of the chromatic scale must be sounded as often as one another, while preventing the emphasis of any one note. This means that the entire piece but be written in 12-tone 'rows' or blocks, wherein all chromatic notes are used, but none are repeated. You can see how this is much more constricting to a composer than simply being liberal with tonality.
The mathematicians in the comment section that clearly missed your proffesion...please don't mix the priorities in music...feeling over aaaaaaannnnyy sort of theory if you ask me (a person who drops his jaw when I hear something from the heart)
Chick doesn't follow the melody all the time, but he chooses modes, as for the bass he just plays some whole-tone and chromatic scales just like Monk likes it, so he hits some non-scale passing tones, but they are not out of tune! The solo was pretty good all if you like tension, but I prefer Monk any day... Corea will follow him wherever he goes, so they play it freely,Schoenberg like..You can't beat the original, so Corea says why don't we change it a little bit, because we have technique
You obviously have never heard a bass solo, of course it sounds hard to recognise the notes, and yeah he got lost for a second, but he plays the right notes the wrong time that's all, don't troll anymore cause you're hard of hearing buddy..
@Sunderlanding i don't want to argue with you any more, you can be fan of this musicians or not but solo is not out of tune, and you think it is. end of story.
Rest in Peace Chick. What an immense pleasure it was - and still is - to hear you play.
Chick is one of the most inspired improvisers and overall most inventive musicians I have ever known.
