My dad taped this off the tv back when it was shown in Australia, when I was three years old. I used to play the tape. It was the first jazz I ever heard. Back then, I had no context, and no idea who, for example, Herbie Hancock was, or Thelonious Monk. The tape is long gone, so it's great to be able to watch this again here.
All right......from the very top, let say that "Round Midnight" is among one of the most haunting songs I have ever heard and there are many. "Strange Fruit" comes to mind. But "Round Midnight" has always put me in a certain mood, and when Bobby McFerrin does his rendition of it.....It transports me. The sheer beauty of his voice is magic!!. Not to take away from the other great vocalist who have performed this jem over the years...all have been magnificent, But Bobby just takes me to another place.
@smokenfly. It's not just the notes he can hit, that's just the beginning of music. It's the emotion and pure understanding of this song and what it says and what Monk was saying when he composed it that make this a completely outstanding performance. Mr. McFerrin is one of the most talented and insightful musicians around. Cheers for this Gem. Also just because he won his Grammy for Don't Worry Be Happy, this proves he deserved it.
This is one of the coolest renditions of this song. Bobby puts it down here. And, I love watching Tony Williams, the drummer, come onto the set puffing the cigar. That scene is just too cool! Still, this video is so awesome!
Have always loved McFerrin, even before Voicestra. For those who get and love Jazz, no explanation of Bobby's excellence is necessary. Explaining Jazz to anyone else is like trying to explain the ethos of poetry. Best not to try; best to leave discovery to the individual. Bobby is one of the greats.
Black Musical Genius!!! Tony, Buster, and Hancock are dancing with Bobby on Every Note, Tone and Rest on this heavenly composition by the God of Bebop Piano-Thelonious Sphere Monk. RIP...
When you get the star filled audience to give you a standing ovation, you know it's a classic. Sony must have a copy of this in higher definition video and audio!
This video makes me cussing repeatedly. Hearing his swing note is chilling. If I'm in the audience, I will like every jazz fanatic in jazz cafes who scream "YEAAAH !!!!"
@smokenfly514 If you are talking about Bobby McFerrin, he is becoming one with the song on a spiritual level, as he vocalizes the muted trumpet for this piece. That is what his swaying and posturing is all about:)
On the contrary ... Your ongoing question and exclamation marks implied a frustration. Hence the "don't sweat it" remark. The "different strokes" was to infer an understanding of your delimma. Nothing more.
Watching again in 2022…amazing
Watched this in 87'. Recorded on VHS tape. Watched repeatedly and it still holds up.😎

너무 좋아❤
Tive à benção de vê-lo ao vivo no Brasil, em São Paulo. Nada mais precioso do que Bob!

Herbie... Herbie.... HERBIE!!!!!!!
Perfection..... sheer perfection.
Every rendition of this tune is SO different but JUST as perfect!!!
Composition itself is perfection.
An an artist in complete control of his instrument - bends notes like nobodys bizness. Haunting and beautifully rendered. Genius.

Arthur Jankins love that part too❤
Ladies and genttlemen: an artist...
One of the unforgettable performances in the movie. Great comping by Herbie. One of the most beautiful tunes in Jazz, ever...
Now I truly know what Miles Davis is talking about when he says that he likes the mute, because it makes the trumpet sound like a human voice.
So that's why! I always wondered.
One of The Greatest Performance That i see when i was young!!!

@smokenfly514 ... don't sweat it if you don't get it ... different strokes for different folks.
Don't worry...
Aside from this beautiful rendition of Round Midnight, did anyone else hear "the lick" relatively early in Herbie Hancock's solo
Jovan Jackson what lick do you mean?
He uses it so much.... almost in every solo he does and it sounds different each time.

I heard it too. The licc reigns supreme. None shall escape its grasp
トニ-がカッコEー(*´∀`)♪
Shudder ... that other?
Anybody peeped Whitney Houston in the audience? 😍
...and her mom, Cissy and her cousin, Dion Warwick!
with Buster, who NEEDS Ron? :)
Buster is great.
But Ron is the glue that holds Herbie and Tony together...
He definitely was missed in this rendition.
