Authenticity hack: fail your way to new and original ideas

Something John Mayer said in a random interview (which I can no longer find) has stuck with me:
Failing at trying to be someone else is a fantastic way to find out who you are.
It may not be verbatim, but the idea has stuck with me. Failing at trying to copy someone is a great way to discover what makes you unique and authentic. It's also a fun way to find new ideas if you're in a creative rut.
So I made a video as an example, turning a cover song (I Will Follow You into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie) into something...else...something that sounds original. Or at least, is the springboard to something original.
We can turn existing ideas into new, original and authentic ones by intentional failing at copying them.
