@@kurtisdeakin Maybe not in the short run, but "makes money" and "is culturally relevant" are two very different metrics for success, and the latter lasts a lot longer. As it stands, these shows are only culturally relevant because they're such spectacular failures. And none of them are as singularly "bad good" as The Room or Battlefield Earth. They fade from our memories before they've even run their full course. Let them cash in their DEI checks, their reputation is spoiled. Money is all they have left.

TV & Cinema are basically dead now regardless, in the up and coming generations nobody cares about them, they created next to noting worthy of love or "fandom" even the good shows are living on borrowed time due to a generalised lack of interest in TV & Cinematic media.
It's like the moment something doesn't became cool. When Star Wars came out it was a fun phenomena. There was lots of joy. Now so much of entertainment is Liberal propaganda. People are just tuning out. Dr. Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Marvel - not cool anymore because the fun is gone.
Be interesting to observe the younger generations, who've grown up in the age of woke entertainment, to see if they have the same passion for fandoms their parents did. Or if they simply shrug.

I agree. I block, I ignore, I do not watch (nor hate watch. If I must, I will sail the seas instead). I let it die, and when asked my opinion I will share from what little I've seen, but I make it clear I do not care and I am not engaging with new media. I promote old classics.
I watch files of the old, real Star Treks and Star Wars episodes and books on my phone.
They don't get a dime of mine to make more weird versions of their trash.
I also show my kids older movies and they're amazed they aren't horrible.
It's true that you shouldn't watch it, but unfortunately they absolutely do not care. They will call the audience bigots and make the next one even worse. Rinse, repeat.

With time, though, culture changed, and things turned around. So, I agree that things can and will change, most likely in ways we don't expect.

The exception seems to be Star Wars fans. Every show gets worse and worse, but Star Wars fans keep watching. Look at how many people are watching The Acolyte, including people like The Critical Drinker.
@@dmhendricks To be fair a lot of the stuff Drinker reviews ends up failing anyway, even many of the movies he recommends. Despite how much influence he has in the YT space, neither his money nor his opinions seem to be that influential in how successful a show or movie ends up being. I think people are just fed up with modern entertainment in general and most people are only "watching" it through YT reviewers (or piracy).
The people who own these franchises are like rich kids who inherited their money, or a horse. They will soon either spend their money with no idea how to make more, or work the horse to death, and then have to spend money to have the body disposed of.

Have to disagree, Dave - the next generation AREN'T taking to Disney Star Wars. My partner is a primary school teacher, and we have friends in the profession who also notice the same thing - the kids don't care about Star Wars. They talk about TikTok stars, streamers, VTubers; never Star Wars. The last Star Wars rucksack my partner can remember seeing was Chopper-themed, all the way back when Rebels was airing, and even the girls that loved "Baby Yoda" got over the fad quickly, because none of them actually watched The Mandolorian.
Toy companies know kids aren't buying anymore - that's why Lego have dropped the Sequel Trilogy like a rock and started to shift focus toward the adult collector market. And that brings us to the REAL reason why Star Wars is dying - it's not made the jump to a new audience.
Star Wars is aging; to kids, it's already the franchise "Dad used to watch", in 20+ years it'll be the franchise GRANDPA used to watch. It'll have all the cultural relevance the Dick Tracy franchise has today...and then, when Grandpa dies, Star Wars fades into complete obscurity.
It's all so very Soviet. "No comrade, the entertainment tells YOU if you like it or not. You have no choice in the matter but to consume what is given to you and get excited for next product."

I'm old enough to remember when the slang use of "woke" meant you didn't trust the government. It suited the powers that be to change the meaning of it.
The people who are "woke" don't use this term, since it is negative they just use other words to refer to themselves since in order to win they must mock and dismantle those who disagree.

The insults worked for a little while, but as more and more people are labeled as "ists" and "phobes" they lose their power. Eventually the losses will mount to the point that they have to address the underlying issue. It will likely take a few more years before they completely run out of money and dead franchises to remake, but it will happen.
The global economy will tank long before that happens, and it will probably be due to a major military conflict.. losing money is not Disney's concern.

The people they refer to as “-phobes” are rarely afraid of them, rather they just don’t like them for whatever reason, even hate them for no reason. But afraid…not so much. Parents get weird, but that’s as far as that goes.

With AI and CGI who needs actors or writers or any human talent. The products are being made worse so when AI replaces more parts of the process it won’t seem that much different.

As much as there were reasons to criticise his views he was on target when he accused Hollywood , movies and TV of being a fifth column. If we were just talking about woke in entertainment that would be bad enough. But woke as an ideology of evil has penetrated every aspect of our lives and society. People's lives and livelihoods are destroyed every day under woke ideology. Race hatred, gender hatred, gaslighting, toxic workplaces, cancellation, discrimination...the list goes on...
One very scary aspect is that as Dave says, there's a generation that's growing up with woke, that's what they know and that's what they'll see as normal and what's worse is that they won't even see the quagmire of hatred they're functioning in where it's perfectly normal to hurt people because they don't fit the ideology. Sounds like Germany in late 30's and it's as dangerous now as it was then.

@@scarletspider1240 i live in Argentina, and i can assure that the same happened in my country. Although the cultural decay started in the early 90s. At the end of the decade, all good tv shows and movies that were left were nowhere to be found anymore. Fortunately, anime and sone cartoons on cable tv saved us from that wave of stupidity.
As long as various governments are funding DEI initiatives around the globe, this isn't stopping.
Wel, they'll one day run out of franchises to ruin and have nothing left, but my friend if worst comes to worst people will create mircocommunities of fandoms devoid of and outside the realm of incentives to wokify their intellectual property

If the so called 'toxic fan base' is so toxic, then why agitate them by purchasing a beloved show/book and making a show that deliberately alienates the fans.
Ultimately, the fans will simply go and watch something else and all you have left is a show nobody watches and a whopping financial deficit.
Not complaining is not the answer though, sharp criticism and mockery of their pseudo-science agenda.
I suspect that the situation is worse than the destruction of beloved series. The 'Message' undermines our deepest human relationships and meanings: if you don't agree that drag queens reading to infants is a good idea, then 'storytime was never made for your sort'. Good stories explore what it is to be human, while the Message is too often the nasty, bitter aspect of postmodernism, hateful of 'ordinary' humanity.
I am pretty sure George Lucas always had "Lesbian Space Witches" in mind when he wrote Star Wars. 😉

I agree with what Dave is saying but the problem is, I don't see the talent in these younger generations. There is no Kubrick, no musical brilliance of a John Williams.....while not the greatest director ever, George Lucas was creative force. I don't see anything resembling this kind of talent coming up. There is no Steven Spielberg, no Coen brothers, no Tarantino. That along with the death of movie stars, independent or not, I just don't see a bright future for motion pictures or even television for that matter....just don't see it.
Maybe in other countries not infected with the mind virus.

The East has had some interesting offerings in the past few years. I guess I just haven't seen enough or are familiar enough with it yet. But you're right, I should revise what I said to just the West.
I wonder if that's because of lack of opportunity when someone actually shows passion in this new version of the industry. I have no doubt anyone with a strong idea of what makes a good narrative would get beat down everytime they speak in one of those writers rooms and never be allowed to progress their career. It just isn't possible that the whole generation has no creativity.

I'm sure those type of politics are rampant in the writing rooms and on sets of today along with jealousy. Especially considering how the writing room process is far more by committee these days then it ever has been before...too many cooks in the kitchen. I mean, it wasn't unheard of to only have 2 or 3 writers doing a show back in the day. I believe part of it is these younger generations haven't really lived life beyond college and social media. Many of the quality writers of old fought wars, traveled the world, and experienced real tragedy in their lives....real world experience to draw from why writing stories and scripts. I'm sure corporatism contributes to it as well. Production company interference....there are lots of contributing factors but the bottom line is contemporary creatives are not putting out the amount of quality and competent entertainment they once were and we know a lot of older talent has been squeezed out. Not to mention it's cheaper to hire new blood than pay more for accomplished and successful talent.
Time to create our own better products.

Totally agree Dave, I always thought Trek had been done to death and whilst Abrahams efforts were low IQ entertaining silliness the franchIse had done its duty. The same with Star Wars, it is the story of the Skywalkers and that is that, the rest has no significance, just like the EU Novels. Unfortunately anything good soon gets Hijacked and changed by "the message" brigade and so anything new has to be completly independent. Unfortunately we have to live in the past now to stay entertained.
I think you're spot on. Stage One: Take over a beloved franchise with a huge audience & use it as a megaphone for broadcasting your views. Stage Two: Destroy the emotional bond the original audience felt for that franchise to the point where even the original, un-Woke episodes feel tainted. Both ways you get a result.

I think you are right. I have had this thought they are taking these franchises and making it so our generation 80s 90s babies, can let go of childish ways and just build on being an adult. But our generation doesn't believe in bending the knee, so we will do what we want.
I don't remember asking my children to help me "let go of childish things". I was too busy providing for them, and ENJOYING those "childish things" when I was able to squeeze out the odd moment of rest. I guess that's why I'm not of the "you catch more flies with honey" school of thought.
See, when I was a kid, I was taught to respect my elders. I was taught that - even if the things my parents or grandparents enjoyed may have seemed quaint or even antique to my eyes - that they still had value, and even if I didn't ENJOY them... I could appreciate and LEARN from them.
I have no idea who the a$$hole was that tricked my children's generation into thinking all that has come before was fit for disposal, but they seriously screwed up on several fronts. Not only are they wilfully refusing to learn from those who have gone before... but they've earned the enmity of a fairly large percentage of people who - like it or not - THEY need far more than need them. Our generation grew up practically feral.

The point people don't get, and is only barely touched on here, is that during "communist" revolutions everything but the state is torn down because nothing can be above the state. That's why everything from history to popular media is rewritten or flat out erased, while everyone is demoralized in the process. Anything that people can look to for hope, lessons, entertainment, etc., that is not the state has to be removed or tainted to such a degree that it is discarded in favor of the only remaining option, the state. The power trip by people that couldn't hold power in a true merit based system is only tangential because that's who's used to enact it, but the destruction of anything but the state is the main goal.
I am scared, I always knew I wasn't like other people. Now I know why, I am too honest, nice and I think for myself.
The solution is let it go, Live and let die, create something new that satisfies the demand for decent entertainment. Take the Rippaverse for example: it only succeeded with the preorder campaigns becuase there IS a demand for something as simple a story. Just a story. No wannabe activism or self insertion. "All art is political" is a phrase much-beloved by those who _need_ art to be political so they can know whether to like it or condemn it. In some ways, the biggest hurdle for independent creators is the sheer amount of noise, particularly what is generated on the Internet. Five properties driven by a shallow agenda, but with a ton of advertising money, take up a lot more space than one sincere and imaginative piece without it. Rejecting the worst of "big media" is only part of what needs to be done if we want things to change; we need to actively seek creators who are doing something different, talk them up, tell people about them. It's going to take work... And I'm not entirely confident our degraded attention span is up to it, honestly.

The customer decides which products are good and which are not. That's why they are called customers. If a product stinks, customers realize it and stop buying it. That's the balance of power. People who keep putting out piles of crap for products aren't entitled to keep putting out piles of crap and demanding their customers keep buying it. The curious thing is these aren't bad or offensive terms, and the points being made are completely accurate and truthful. They just make certain people in power get very uncomfortable. They don't want ordinary people getting a dose of the pill that is of a certain color.

It makes me wonder sometimes how many statues, stories, cultural phenomenon is forever lost to us. Not because of the normal ravages of time, but because someone took offense and decided to wipe it out. There are certainly instances of someone "trying" to wipe out the memory of a person or a movement and failing; how many times was it successful? Just a thing I think about because I love history.
The nose cut off the Sphinx, the library at Alexandria. The Crusades, the Jihads. The world is littered with the detritus of those who would vandalize History under the mistaken assumption that doing so would change the future for the better.

We know pharaohs tried to erase their predecessors from the historical record, and the destruction wrought by Islam on every territory they've conquered is enormous, and that's just two examples we know about. I honestly don't know why, now that we have digital record keeping, that historians and others aren't racing to record everything on the planet that is manmade, just in case.
I have said, and I still maintain this opinion, that the Acolyte was made with the explicit purpose to piss off those fans who have rejected Disney Star Wars. It's just too on the nose to not be, purposefully and pointlessly, from a narrative perspective, ripping up lore so they'd get a rise out of them. This is why I keep saying it, it's time to allow for apathy to set in. I've been thinking about this recently and have come to the conclusion that it's more about top-level executive and shareholder greed than "wokeness". The latter is just a loose term passed around between "clowns" in the political circus ring. The executives and shareholders realized they could capitalize on the circus by giving emotionally incontinent, narcissistic and predominantly liberal clowns positions in their studios to produce sloppy garbage that customers would watch anyways, and would satisfy the ego and narcissism of the clowns - a good symbiosis tbh. AI tech bros also assisted in this and boosted their own shareholder value by giving unqualified clowns generative tools to make them feel like Steven Spielberg when they can barely write a proper email lol. It would crush beloved legacy IPs and lose customers but ultimately would give the executives and shareholders short-term profit, which is all they care about. IIRC the Lion King live-action remake made over a billion dollars. But again, it's short-term for a reason. Kinda like Encanto, the denial of the structural rot intensifies, the cracks are getting bigger, and soon the house may collapse.

I don't think so. The show runners were just as much outsiders and outcasts as the nerds, but the nerds were smart and they're not. They're the geeks, basically. They were never the cool kids, never the nerds, but their parents had money, so they could buy access and influence that anyone else would have needed talent to get.

Why is incompetence simpler than malice? There seems to be two rather sizeable assumptions here: that simplicity is favoured in terms of motives, and that incompetence is simpler in comparison to malice. I'd say both assumptions have to be justified, not just stated as though self-evident.

Basically look for the root cause. Cui Bono "who profits". Marx didn't want to torment people. He was just lazy. So he created a theoretical structure to justify other people sharing the fruits of their labor with him rather than going out and doing some honest work.

As a Christian, it seems obvious to me that the "good old way" things used to be is simply a way of saying that the world built on the Christian ethos was true and superior to this muck we are being force-fed now. You don't come out and name it, but the unspoken thing you are contrasting all this new stuff against, is the worldview that our Creator gave us. They aren't cultural constructs that can be reinvented on a whim. We live in God's world, the master Storyteller, and stories that deviate from the kind of world He created will always feel "off" to us. I think these old franchises could have gone on a few more years, but even they had the seeds of their own destruction in them, to the extent that they contradicted the reality of God's world. The mistake we make is asking “why ?”. Why destroy these movies and tv shows? Why push away the fans who enjoy them? Why don’t they want to make money, and all that.

It’s not a Dark Age of DEI driven media. That gives a negative connotation to the Dark Ages (that are much richer in history than the name of the age implies).
These properties, that have had the treatment, will forever be available for historians to study and seldom if ever revisited or rewatched.
Most will revisit, or even binge, pre-DEI stories, movies and series. Few will be re-watching Discovery, Acolyte, The Last Jedi or 2018’s Mary Queen of Scots, a “historic drama” replete with black courtiers and Asian ladies in waiting.

Don't underestimate the "stunning and brave: content as a deliberate attempt at creating a demoralizing element in our culture. Demoralizing the population, targeting a particular demographic group, especially at this time, has it's uses for the elites. As they attempt to "fundamentally transform" our societies.

Been banging this drum for a while now in a different way. Does anyone remember how much FUN the 2016 election was? It was young and boisterous and subversive, even though the issues at stake were very serious. Since then, it's all become very doom and gloom, boomers at the wheel, and people are miserable. It needs to be FUN - that's how we win. They need to know that they have nothing that we want. Mock their efforts and do your own thing.
It was fun because people still thought elections were real and meaningful and because Trump was fun.
It's not about customers anymore. It's all about investors, they drive the course of these media conglomerates instead of reacting to the market authentically.
