I love Sonic 1, 2, 3&K but please, can we stop putting out the old Genesis roms of them and put the REMAKES that have widescreen/full 100% of the time 60fps, cut content and remade special stages with 2?
I don't know what SEGA is doing but keeping all that locked on iOS/Android is really, really dumb.
It does still take work to port a game and add in this kinda romhack, and I think it's fine since it keeps the game alive, known and money gets to fund and potentially let publishers know if a game series still has a audience.
But, in the case of Sonic, as I said they've literally remade the games and are vastly superior in that way and yet console/PC are still getting roms. It's very....................odd.

It was announced that they would be releasing this week but still it was not 100% specially for the western release date, Sega should definitely improve their marketing about this series

Personally I would rather have the Christian Whitehead port of Sonic 1 for it's improved physics and proper widescreen but I do have to commend M2 for trying to enhance the game with the Drop Dash (made by Whitehead for Mania so kinda ironic) and allowing people to play the arcade MegaPlay version at home for the first time.
As for the price, I think it might have been better at $5 but $8 isn't terrible, especially considering they are updating the ROMs with new code (unlike the Classic collection which is just a standard emulator playing the original ROMs).
Updating ROMs with new code is one thing but once M2 get in their Switch stride no one - not even Nintendo - will be able to push the machine harder or further. It took them a couple of years to get to that point with the 3DS but it'll probably be sooner on Switch.
I'd love a Sonic 3D collection including Adventure 1& 2, Heroes and, yes I know it's a bit controversial, Shadow the Hedgehog

The slow down is part of the original Thunder Force 4, it's emulated for accuracy, not a higher CPU speed.
Why don't they just release the remaster/remake made by Christian Whitehead like they did with Sonic CD? That is the best version with real widescreen and better everything. Please SEGA release a package with the remasters of Sonic 1,2,3 and CD! That would be the ultimate classic Sonic pack and stop releasing the old versions overpriced again and again when you have much better versions available :(

It feels like Nintendo has a hate boner for button mapping. It ruined OOT/MM on the 3DS for me. Also, the Kirby games on the 3DS too. At least the Kirby game on the Switch has button mapping! I just prefer to jump with B and inhale with Y, why is that such a big deal to Nintendo?!
Oddly enough, the Wii U allowed for button mapping on Virtual Console.

That sounds like a weird control scheme, but hey, maybe you played Kirby Super Star so much (KSS for SNES is the only game in the whole franchise that uses that weird as hell control scheme) that you can't use a different control scheme.
The slowdown in lightening force is absolutely an accurate emulation thing :) there is an option under game version called reduce processing delay that removes the slowdown if you set it to on.

These are the definitive editions with perfect M2 emulation and several extras, like the arcade version of Sonic.
The collection is known to have terrible emulation and input lag.
Literally any emulator works better than the classic collection.
Max Most emulators have a toggle that will eliminate slowdown, sprite limits etc.
I suggest play the mobile version. At least try it, it's free with ads. It also has Tails, and Knuckles, true wide-screen, save files, and is made by the lead dev of Sonic Mania, in fact it was his second project on sega. And if you have a switch (pretty sure ya do) and an android device, I believe you can use the Joy-cons as a controller for the game.
The mobile version is great!
But it's a remaster, while the SEGA AGES series aims to deliver the experience as it was intended on the original hardware.
They both serve different purposes.

Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze has Time Attack mode too, where you can also upload your own and watch other people’s times. It was my favourite thing about that game, racked up 160 hours on it since it came out in May.

I strongly agree, I have both versions of Sonic 1 (Switch and iOS) and the iOS is better whereas the seith version is basically the Mega Drive version but with a drop dash and a spin dash

This is like waiting for an ATGames clone on a budget LCD panel while ignoring the RGB-bypassed, audio-amped VA1 Genesis on a BVM.
this is definitely worth it in my opinion. M2 always does a great job porting sonic and other genesis remakes. Also since they did a 3D remake for sonic 1, 2, and Ecco The Dolphin, it's making me hopeful that ecco will come eventually to sega ages. I already got this and looking forward to it. I will be passing up the classic collection. I already have a sonic classic collection on my DS. even though it's dated, it still runs well and I still play it so I will definitely be playing this for a long time.

Slowdown like this is intentional, similar to Metal Slug and the Mega Man X collection. The target is not always to get the best possible experience, but the most accurate of how it was back in the day.

Yeah, stuff like that should be optional. Not everyone played the game when they were first released, and would probably prefer the game to be smooth.
Very true, like for example with metal slug 2 back in the arcade it was always laggy and when they released the ports on other platforms it ran the same as back then. But many always say it was a bad port but I agree it be nice to have the options as well.
If you check the 9min mark there is what appears to be an option to turn it off. "Reduce processing delay"

Exactly. I guess the emulation was developed by Blackbone (former Digital Eclipse), they never get the Mega Drive emulation right, its always a poor job. Its not worthy the money. M2 on other hand always did amazing job at emulating and porting not only the MD, but the SMS and many other old Sega arcade hardware. Sad part is they released almost always get restricted to Japan.
There's problems with the sound too. If you have a PC, download Retroarch and the Genesis Plus GX Core, and do a test with the same game on it. You'll quickly notice how innacurate Blackbone's emulation is.

I like the idea of Sega Ages, they added a few cool features but at the same time kept the the original game aspects and overall seems to be perfectly ported.
Hopefully they will also port other games that were never released for the home consoles, great arcade titles like Golden Axe the Revenge of Death adder etc.. like Capcom did in its last bundle.
Also the price for these first releases (seen before) should be around $5 - €5.
And they should definitely do some better marketing before releasing them.
M2 are known for very accurate and detailed ports. Any slowdown you see mimics the Genesis/Megadrive. If you want a comprehensive port, buy this. If you want to casually play Meagdrive games every now and again, wait for the collection (but take a look at My Life In Gaming's review to see what it lacks)

It’s not a misspelling. Lighten is a word. A lightening of something just means for it to shine bright, and that’s what the Lightening Force does with their lasers and bombs....they light things up.

Sonic 1 and 2 are on the switch but there seems to be something missing? Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
The Slowdown was part of the game because there's a lot of stuff going on the screen so the Genesis processor's stock speed wasn't enough to run everything smootly but 80% of the game is just fine. I overclocked the speed of my Genesis so I can play it without slowdowns, and in the Sega Ages version you also can change that. There's an option called Reduce Processing Delay and that will make the game run without any slowdown. Thunder Force IV is concidered by many as one of the best 16-bit shoot 'em ups ever created, so I invite you to play the game much more to get the feel of it and maybe you can like it much more.

Aw, Lightening Force. I never owned the game, but I remember playing it at my uncle and aunt's. I was only able to beat the first level, although I got fairly far in two other levels (the one with the sand and the one with all the techno junk).
I would definitely love to pick up these two titles sometime, but it may be a while, because at $8 a pop, I'd rather save that for some other games.
I also wished they had the Christian Whitehead version plus the drop dash, but the drop dash makes it worth it. It's interesting how the drop dash is now more vital to speedrunning than the spin dash, it seems like.
I'm about two years late to the party, but I got this after trying Sonic 1 and 2 on the Genesis Collection. Input lag and sound emulation is pretty bad on those two games, much like the PC versions on Steam (thankfully they let you grab the ROMs with the Steam versions). M2 however, did an excellent job with their emulation of Sonic 1. Input lag is unnoticeable, and the drop dash is a welcome addition.
M2 are an amazing bunch of devs and it shows, but it still baffles me as to how Sega prefers an emulated version over Christian Whitehead's definitive port, widescreen n' all.

I absolutely love the whole Sega Ages Idea, I love that they added new fun modes and features to classic Sega titles, I love that they have replays and wallpapers, and I love that they have filter and ratio options, (and hopefully online play too) BUT this REALLY should have been an account type of service like steam. As fantastic as some of these new features are, asking nearly 10 dollars for these games individually is rather pricey and knowing they'll be stuck to a system rather than an account is REALLY disappointing and just makes you second guess if the price is worth the purchase. At a lower price point like $4.99 I think a customer would be much more inclined to impulse buy, "2 for 10" sounds a lot better in someones mind then "8 and change."
Honestly, these exact same reasons are what have stopped me from going ham and buying up all of those "SNK" and "Arcade Archive" arcade games as well. Aside from the price, just the idea of constantly having to re-buy the same thing over and over again is a huge turn off to me.

These old 16-bit games were meant to be played on a CRT TV, so I can never have enough scanlines. Granted, a lot of these 16-bit game ports to modern consoles usually have awful CRT filters with uneven scanlines and whatnot. They just need to learn how to emulate pixel blurring and blending because all the games on the Genesis simulated alpha transparency by making sprites in the foreground be dithered, having a missing pixel every other pixel. When viewed on a CRT, it looks convincingly transparent. That practice of fake transparency continued onto the Sega Saturn.
However, I think the Vintage mode in Sega Ages Sonic looks really good for a CRT filter. Certainly makes the shimmering when running by waterfalls look a lot better and doesn't hurt your eyes anymore.

A couple of things....First of all too many remakes. We gotta stop buying them. Second, the user manual is actually the first time I see the switches internal browser. It's he closest thing to a internet browser so far. Third, I love how you can download game play from other people. Where does it download to and how much space does it take?
Just for anyone curious, Genesis emulators are available for the Switch, and there are sonic rom hacks that have these "new features" plus much more. Also you have supereagle for the gfx which looks a billion times better than the "scanlines plus blur" mode. Bought this for 7$ and was supremely dissapointed. I quickly found myself playing the original sonic rom with the upgraded features on emulator. It's such a bummer when developers charge for a product that the modding community has had and improved for years.
What about the ability to play as Tails and Knuckles and a hidden 7th special stage that allows you to become Super Sonic?
My biggest qualms are how half finished or obscure some features are. The Spin Dash and Drop Dash have blatant bugs, and Time Attack mode for ONE SINGLE ACT seems pretty pointless. It's a nice package on paper and better than just a straight up normal ROM of the game, but why not go all the way with this stuff?

I know the Sega ages games have more "completed" versions but it's 7$ for each game..with the Sega megadrive collection coming out in just few months it's better to wait and pic up the colection,have about 50 games for at max 40$,maybe even 30$.
I think the replay option is awesome and would maybe help people looking to get into the retro speedrunning community.

This is worth it just for Thunder Force IV, one of the very best 16bit games. Amazing music, graphics, bosses and stage designs with different paths way before Sonic, fucking classic. But of course...it's a challenging shooter so of course casuals run away and it's niche. Give it some time Spawn, you'll improve.
I played NES and some Sega Genesis games back in the day. I checked the list for the Sega classics thing, but the only game I’ve heard of is Sonic. I didn’t play many games for Sega though. I think I may get this one.
The wallpaper can be turned off by primarily playing in full screen mode since anyone that's played the original genesis version and are more comfortable with seeing the full image of a game on a television rather than the arcade machine-like screen visuals but that's how I prefer my gameplay time to look like as despite having hit the arcade whenever I could as a teenager I no longer feel the need for arcade machine textures to be seen I'm 28 now and I spend most of my time on the Switch which is my current console. and yes I'm one of those gamers that stay in line with the times rather than be a prude and be stuck in the past where a hardcore fanboy of the old School way of making games would by now be saying "they don't make great games as I remember them anymore" which is never going to be true since I for one am going to say live life and learn to go my way no matter what happens and I'll never turn back.
If you are a game collector like me I gonna buy it both versions the sega genesis classic and the ages just to play the special featureS I cannot wait to buy the switch

This kind of seems familiar to the 3DS version of Sonic. If you have the 3DS version you have no reason to by this version unless if you really care about time attack. As for lightning Force I'm not familiar to say anything about it

The Sega Classics Collection does not have Lightening Force nor does it have Fantasy Star.
Good review thanks. BUT I am sorry to say that the BEST VERSION for Sonic, and also for all these retro games is the one from 3DS under the "3D CLASSICS" brand. Was done by M2 too for the Sega titles, and they did it in 3D in such a beautiful way... It's jaw dropping and all these retro games suddenly become that beautifull and full of life. Nintendo also did a few like Twinbee, Excite Bike (etc...) and it's really impressive.
If the arcade had slowdown, arcade perfect ports *must* have slowdown. That's how it works.

Hahahaha...kids mode...that's great. I remember buying Lightening Force (Thunder Force IV) on a whim back when it was relatively new. I had both the Genesis (Sega CD as well) and Snes at the time and was looking fir something that was not Street Fighter 2 or Mortal Kombat. I remember buying three games that day and all of them were for the Genesis. I got Streets if Rage 2 (I did not gave it at that point but I played it at a friends and my God), Desert Strike (amazing as well), and finally Lightening Force. I mowed quite a few lawns that Spring and I wanted to buy a bunch of games...I actually got Desert Strike on sale for $29.99. I remember thinking man I hit the freaking jackpot here as every game I got was astounding. My cousin came over that night and we stayed up all night trying to beat Thunder Force IV (I'm not referring to it as that rediculous name again) and while we did great we did not finish it that night. I didn't get through it until many years later and on an emulator.
You can still play roms on your phone with joycons via Bluetooth.

I have Sonic Mania Plus .... and the first 2 sonic games on my 3DS, xBox 360, PC, iOS and Droid (but we don't talk about droid because of how Sega screwed me over); I don't think I'll buy it again.
So far the best "Original Rom" version I have seen. Extremely customizable with extra functions. You can even change between region versions but the video explains all this anyway. I bought it instantly but I am a hardcore Sonic fan anyway. Nobody needs the 08/15 standard genesis Rom that will be coming with the Genesis collection. This version right is A LOT better. So people saying, wait for the Genesis collection, don't get the point. Those versions are 2 big different ones.
Maybe the only better version (to some extent...) is the remake port from Android I think. Not better in all categories though. But for those hardcore original fans, this AGES version is the best to date. Hope the others will also follow in AGES versions by M2. Great work guys!

Not if you care about quality, the collection are just a set of ports, and not perfect ports... While the AGES line are masterfully remastered, often with extra quality of life features and even new content... They are the definitive version of each game.

I was curious about "Ring Keep Mode".
The SEGA AGES games are, more or less, the definitive version of those games. Many of them have genuine new content, modern features and so on... Really, if you like these games, it is worth the $7.99 for the definitive version and I hope SEGA continue SEGA AGES way into the Saturn and Dreamcast eta with the same level of love and attention.
These are way better than that 30 game rom collection.

I don't like smoothing on classic 8-16bit games, but I do like it on n64 and psx emulators. It just ruins the art style on those classic 2d games.
