Then, once they recently made those comments, its been trash. I can no longer support anything they put out nowadays.

Not only having been a jerk to Knox since their MLB playing days, but he's a douche to Wally by constantly shutting off his microphone while he's talking and he's an A-hole to the stats lady by overreacting on not having stats when in fact he doesn't really need them instantly.
Oh, it's definitely not just you. Ranch Wilder is sort of the villain of this movie, so him getting his comeuppance is supposed to be satisfying. Disney really used to write great stories and knew how to write certain characters properly.

I loved the part where the kid, the coach, and the whole team on the bench are showing the pitcher the angel signal, even though there was no angel. Was a great scene although was not shown in this clip.
I was fortunate enough to meet Christopher Lloyd at Comicon in San Jose this year (2022). I have an autographed picture of him from this movie. There are several scenes in this movie that made me tear up, 2 scenes in particular were the one where AL checks up on Mel because of his cancer and will soon be joining them. The other is this scene, they end up winning the game all on their own and Mel ends his career with The Penant. There is one quote in particular that has always stuck with me, when AL says, “Even if you can’t see us, we’re always watching”. Gets me every time.
Knox's character development from angry coach to someone to admire and look up to is something to behold. Clark: There ARE angels! Knox: Not this time, Mel, YOU DID IT YOURSELF!

It does seem kind of weird that a guy that's openly bad mouthing the team on the radio and from what I remember had a less than stellar reputation with the Angels to begin with after an unsuccessful stint managing with them wasn't fired months or years ago
I'll tell ya what...for as much as Ranch hated the team and was a jerk, his call right after Mel caught the ball saying he's got it and he can't believe it was really well done! It actually made the scene more dramatic and exciting imo. He actually sounded super pumped in the moment (even though he supposedly wasn't) if you listen to his tone.
Sign of a good broadcaster is being able to be caught up in the moment while painting a picture verbally for the listener. In short: the character of Ranch Wilder did things that real life broadcaster Joe Buck can't do.
Or not to mention the seven decades before that without ever winning a World Series and not even getting the benefit of being loveable losers like the Cubs and the Red Sox
I'm not knocking Angels in the End zone or the others made after this, but this movie was the only real one of them all. The right cast and the right feel. Arguably one of the best 3 baseball movies of all time. Love Sandlot, Field of Dreams, Major League, and A League of their Own, but in my opinion this was my #1 as a kid.
Lou Gehrig story is good. The one with the guy who shot his leg in a hunting accident was good too. Stratton? The Rookie. The Natural. Don't remember the name, but a black and white movie with a guy going through spring training to make the team.
Endzone had that "Disney Channel Movie" reel they were filming on, as opposed to High-Budget Hollywood cameras. The cast, save for Christopher Lloyd, were newer, younger folks without the star power of Danny Glover, Tony Danza, and others. Endzone was a spiritual successor, yes, but it totally lacked the atmosphere that the music and camera angles captured in Outfield.
I was rooting for the Angels that year. And I still call their home field "sports heaven". All because of this movie. I also call them the California Angels. I can't bring myself to call them the Los Angeles Angels, also because of this movie.
You know what's neat? I was at Kansas City when the Angels played the Royals that year in '02. Raul had struck a Grand Slam for the Royals. The Royals had won that game, top of the Ninth. Early in that game, when the Coach for the Angels realized how South they were that day, he gave the players on the field a stern talking to, microphoned and all. It was nothing like Danny Glover's meltdown early in the movie, but the comparisons could be drawn. So imagine my surprise when the Angels won that World Series that year. Made me think of this movie.

I feel so bad for kids these days. They don't make good sports movies for them anymore. I can't think of 1 honestly. I'm so glad I raised my son on movies like this, sandlot, mighty ducks, little giants, little big league, rookie of the year. We had it all. Its a shame.

Being from Anaheim I always drive passed the Angel Stadium but I’ve never actually been in it… after all these years, this scene lets me see what it looks like inside…
The inside shots of the stadium were actually filmed at the Oakland Coliseum. I think it’s because the Rams were actually playing football at Angel Stadium during the time of filming

In the movie, it's explained that when ranch and knox were players, ranch was involved in george's career ending injury. Whether it was intentional or not, they had been at odds and ranch just wanted george to fail as a coach.
Even though they're both essentially just comedies, this and "Major League" are two of the best baseball movies ever made, and they came out within 5 years of each other.
I was just about to say 😅 They only won the division. They still had to get through the ALCS since this came out the year before the Wild Card and Divisional Series was introduced to baseball.
Rookie of the Year had the same problem but even worse because we're supposed to believe they won the WS even after their best pitcher and best reliever both suffered horrible injuries on the same day.

What a great way for Mel to finish. Didn't know he had six months left before the cancer kills him, but he finished his baseball days on a high note. The angels that helped the team throughout the season did so to help get their confidence up and restore their faith in each other as a team. It was that faith and confidence that led the team to win the final game without divine intervention. The work of the angels was done and it was that exercise of faith that led Mel to end the game with that catch.
I remember when i caught a line drive like that when i was a pitcher. It was such a quick and clean catch and i couldnt believe i did it it was like an out of body experience

Being from Anaheim I always drive passed the Angel Stadium but I’ve never actually been in it… after all these years, this scene lets me see what it looks like inside…
The inside shots of the stadium were actually filmed at the Oakland Coliseum. I think it’s because the Rams were actually playing football at Angel Stadium during the time of filming

What really opened up the floodgates for me was the scene later when Manager George Knox informed the two boys he had been approved to adopt them.
Al mentions "training wings" earlier in the movie. The final game is where they have to play without the training wings
Still shocks me how many of the supporting cast members who were barely known at the time in this movie became huge stars in their own right

In the movie, it's explained that when ranch and knox were players, ranch was involved in george's career ending injury. Whether it was intentional or not, they had been at odds and ranch just wanted george to fail as a coach.

What a great way for Mel to finish. Didn't know he had six months left before the cancer kills him, but he finished his baseball days on a high note. The angels that helped the team throughout the season did so to help get their confidence up and restore their faith in each other as a team. It was that faith and confidence that led the team to win the final game without divine intervention. The work of the angels was done and it was that exercise of faith that led Mel to end the game with that catch.

I remember when i caught a line drive like that when i was a pitcher. It was such a quick and clean catch and i couldnt believe i did it it was like an out of body experience
Still gets me every time! I saw this movie in the theatre a few years after my dad passed and he was a HUGE baseball fan and ball player! Of course, Tony Danza as Mel Clark was a perfect fit, as he too used to play ball! ❤ ⚾️ 😇

I loved 90s baseball movies as a kid, especially this one. I always wondered, though, why the movies end with the main character’s team winning the pennant instead of the World Series.
