Jeff Buckley is for rock and single/songwriter what Frank Sinatra is for vocal jazz and swing. An amazing performer in every single way; from voice to emotion. Every single version is different to another. Every version is special and unique in it's way.
Never has a piece of music been written so brilliantly by one song writer (Leonard Cohen) only to be so brilliantly adopted by another artist who embodies it, lives it, breathes it, exudes it, in such a way that it transcends “ownership” and floats off into the ether as a magical piece of art for the universe. Does anyone know if Leonard Cohen heard this version, or reacted to it?
There is something holy about this song even though the lyrics don't signify this. His father died from overdose but he was clean and died from drowning. He carried his father's talents but not his sin. I find that significant. I wish I could say the same for me and my old man. He didn't write this song, but he made it great.
@nonya biznis The song certainly contains Biblical imagery, so I am not quite sure that I agree with you, though it largely is a lament about love lost. What sin of Tim's are you referring to; Tim's abandonment of Jeff and his mother? Tim's overdose? Jeff had his owns sins, as did Tim.
I cry every time I hear this version. There were quite a few recordings of this song by him and other artists but this is the most perfect performance, so haunting. It kicks my heart's ass every time.
hearing this makes me reminisce on my heartbroken love. it fills me with both sadness at what i’ve lost, but also determination to get her back. to show her that i love her. even though i might fail, this song is a place of peace where tears may flow like a rushing river or a light rainfall
Hey man, sometimes you’re in love and it’s just not right, if it’s right, chase it, if not man, it’s okay :) and it sucks ass but you can do it. Just do the things that make you feel happy and invest time into taking care of your physical and mental health, and soon enough you’ll find somebody who will never leave you
💜 I wish I could have witnessed one of his live performances...! I am so glad that I still find footage like this one, that I haven't watched before! Thanks for uploading this video!!!!

This hauntingly beautiful performance has brought me to tears. I am awed at Jeff's performance in Tokyo. I think this is the most beautiful rendition Of Hallelujah I have ever heard before. I have listed to numerous performers sing this song and I love Jeff Buckley's the most. The passion of the vocals entwined with the guitar strings is profound.
What Jeff Buckley did with Cohen's Hallelujah, John Mayer did with Tom Petty's Free Fallin'. These are covers that make the song their very own. Such legends 🌸
Omg this is so good. I love the way he changed the way he sung this song. True musician ill tell you that. Damn i wish he was still here. A frickin shame that he waa taken too soon

@Tyler L Jeff’s official UA-cam channel has it set to private, for the time being. Maybe they plan on making it public, again, when his biopic, and a new documentary, are released, next year. I had the full concert up on my channel, earlier this year, but it was eventually blocked. You can always order the officially released DVD, or purchase and stream it, digitally.
@John Goodman Live in Chicago - Hallelujah? If that’s the one you’re looking for, Jeff’s official channel removed it - and several others - over a year ago. Make sure to tell Roseanne.
I’m sorry…I’m going to say it…this is absolutely beautiful except for where it isn’t. 2:10? Seriously? No. He lost it and if this wasn’t a beloved singer performing live who died, a different version of this song live would be here instead of this version. So much of it is breathtaking. Parts of it not - so much.

No! No comparison, Sinatra to Jeff Buckley. Buckley is an artist of glorious, high achievement. Sinatra was an entertainer.
Jeff was not that much of a rock artist
No singer songwriter has been better than him

Certain Leonard Cohen heard Jeff's version. What he thought of it, I don't know.
