Shout out to the person who requested this, Widower is usually the first song I use to introduce people to Dillinger because of how catchy it is. I used to not really like Dillinger but when their album One Of Us Is The Killer came out I listened to it in full and the catchier tracks on it had me hooked, then re-listening to the album got me to appreciate the chaotic songs more. Catchy songs like this are standouts in their overall discography but they serve as good resting points between the crazier stuff. I would recommend the albums One Of Us Is The Killer or Ire Works just because I think they're better entry points for the band.
I feel like the only person in the world that's backwards on this. I loved the crazy, chaotic parts of the band but found the melodic parts corny and annoying (could not listen to gold teeth on a bum for the longest time). Eventually, I came around to loving everything they do.
I completely agree man. You hear a lot of Mike Patton influence in the cleaner/groovier songs and a taste of their versatility. I love Dillinger and started at 43% Burnt in 5th grade and every album since, and I love to see them sound like that. Even if it’s just for little snippets in the chaotic songs. This ones a perfect blend to me, definitely the first one I recommend to people so I don’t instantly scare them away lol.
Widower is imo the best song to introduce people to Dillinger, the begining is soft and increases it's intensity gradually. Option Paralysis is probably the best album in terms of composition.
The pianist in this song (and some other songs on the album) is Mike Garson, who collaborated with David Bowie for years. He came in to the studio and wrote some pieces and the band wrote around them. Was looking forward to that surprised smile you gave during the piano break before the outro. Loved that you actually enjoyed a DEP song!
"This is not what I expected from Dillinger Escape Plan" feels like a running theme for Dillinger Escape Plan. I initially got to know them as a really heavy mathcore band not unlike where Iwrestledabearonce started out at, but they've proven themselves to not shy away from experimenting with their style and I'm honestly absolutely digging it.
This and Mouth of Ghosts have been my fave DEP songs. Puciato really explores melodies and styles even more than on option paralysis on his solo project released this past year.
If you dug Widower then you absolutely should check out their song "Mouth of Ghosts" from DEP's Ire Works album. It's got a similar vibe with a smoother build and just sounds absolutely beautiful yet powerful at the same time. Easily one of my favorites. Also while I get what you mean about this being a better intro song for you, I feel like with Dillinger it's kind of important that they smack you upside the head and throw you completely off balance at first, so that way you understand what they're about before you ease in with the lighter catchier stuff. Dillinger has an incredible melodic and atmospheric side to their music but you have to know going in that they are not an easy, comfortable, predictable kind of listen. At first you're stunned by the dizzying chaotic heaviness but then gradually you start to appreciate and fall in love with their music more and more. Now they're easily one of my favorites.
I second the Mouth of Ghosts recommendation. One of my favorite Dillinger songs it's just so good even though it's much different than their other material.
I really appreciate the thought that goes into your analysis on Dillinger's music. While I can completely understand someone not enjoying their music generally, I think being open to the skill and complexity of it can, like you said, give you some amount of appreciatio. They tend to cherry pick musical ideas across genres to create something different to anything else I've heard before. The album as a whole is one of their best in my opinion, but they don't/didntt completely change their style between albums. Instead they usually have songs such as this peppered throughout their discography. If you enjoyed Widower I cant recommend Mouth of Ghosts enough. Its largely instrumental, and I believe the lead guitarist (and songwriter iirc) plays the piano part unlike in Widower. It's brilliant though, would highly recommend.
Oh man I LOVE this song (I love Dillinger in general, but this song is great) Also, gonna throw out a recommendation, since you like concept albums, Black Crown Initiate has an EP called The Song of the Crippled Bull, its one song split into 4 parts covering 20min, that I think you would love to analyze, its an absolute masterpiece and even crazier being it was their first release and was so good it got them immediately igned to a major label.
I like how this song kinda covers the 5 stages of grief. Both lyrically and musically it really fits the theme. Dillinger doesn't really have an accessible album but ever since their 2nd record there have always been a few songs like this on every album. I would personally recommend One of Us Is The Killer as to me it balances songs like this with their chaos the best. I listened the album a few times for the catchy songs but over time grew accustomed to the crazy stuff they have going on as well.
Oh that's why they ended with that ending. The piano fade out part was 4th stage: depression and the last one was the 5th: acceptance. Hope Bryan sees this
I always hoped that they'd write an hour long, single track record that had this feel. Unfortunately, that never happened, but I think it would have been a great idea. RIP DEP.
They stretch their musical legs a bit more on Option Paralysis dynamically than previous albums but the majority of the songs from it retain their core chaotic take on hardcore/metalcore. They made a career out of intentionally making the listener uncomfortable and they thrived at it. But Widower and Parasitic Twins are definitely the biggest sonic departures from the rest of the album.
Glad you enjoyed this man! This track is definitely a standout in their discography, they don't have a lot of theatrical sounding songs. A lot.of 9t is chaos with different genres thrown in here and there. Mouth of Ghosts is another track like this that I think you'd enjoy. As for the piano, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the lead guitarist for the band wrote and performed some of the piano track for this song as well as Mike Garson who has worked worked with David Bowie extensively
Glad to see some love for Billy Rymer, the drummer on the Option Paralysis album. His playing is just out of this world. If you like this more mellow, melodic DEP then I highly suggest checking out One of Us Is the Killer (the title track of the album with the same name).
The first couple listens on his solo album... Were questionable. But God did the whole album start to make sense. Really good follow up to Dissociation.
Also Greg's solo albums Child Soldier: Creator of God, and Fuck Content. And the supergroup Killer Be Killed. Greg's solo stuff is kind of like a bridge between all of the different projects he's been in and some sides of him we hadn't heard before, awesome stuff.
Great song choice! Dillinger has been one of my all time favorite heavy bands ever since I discovered them in high school. Though they are definitely an acquired taste
I definitely dug this more than the previous Dillinger track we heard (even when I remember liking that one). The build-up makes the agressive section way more enjoyable. The jazzy interlude is a thing of beauty. It's funny but overall, heaviness aside, I got massive Queen/TDH/Muse vibes due to the piano work, and even some of the harmonies. Not something I would expect from what I know of the band. Loved this song! It seems you were not the only one surprised, Bryan lol
There's really a LOT to get out of DEP. If you liked this, maybe " Mouth of Ghosts"? Most of their stuff definitely sounds like DEP, but they stretch what that is quite well. Off the top of my head, "Ire Works" might be the album that gives the most variety on the "DEP sound". Video game music? London Phil does a great version of Chrono Trigger's main theme that I'd recommend.
Man this song makes me cry, love tdep. The chaos makes sense, I think the ending is perfect because the energy comes out of no where. I think its like you can't stop running that mile like you say. This is about a person you can't get over, wanting an end and never being able to run away, constantly being compelled and repulsed. You would like One of us is the Killer for sure
This is comparatively accessible and also a really great song. I do like most things they've done, but with some it takes the right mood and portions for me.
Cool reaction, widower isn't the norm for the album; but most of their albums have 1/2 softer tracks. I would say their most accessable album overall would be: One of us is the Killer. The ones I think you would find more palatable are: Setting fire to sleeping giants / Unretrofied / Black bubblegum / Milk Lizard / Dead as history / Parasitic twins / One of us is the killer / Nothing's funny / Paranoia shields / Symptom of terminal illness
Somehow I missed this video. DEP is a band I have a ton of respect for. Not many bands as unique and original as them. They started out as basically a mathcore version of Meshuggah, but with every album they evolved and added new elements. Hard to believe a track like this is from the same guys who did Calculating Infinity. Still, they're a band I admire more than I love. I do really like this track, and in general I like the tracks where they reigned in or tried to balance their more crazy/chaotic/experimental elements with more traditional pop/rock, but too often with their music I feel like I'm fighting to grab onto something solid while being battered by water and debris in a hurricane.
omg videogame soundtracks are so dope. some of my favs are: horizon zero dawn main theme, styx master of shadows main theme, the brotherhood escapes from assassin's creed brotherhood. i'd love it if you react to all 3
Videogame soundtrack music!!!! Looking forward seeing some Dark Souls and Bloodborne tracks, Mick Gordon's tracks from Doom's soundtrack and maybe even Final Fantasy VII or Castlevania II tracks
Probably the best reaction to this band online 🤘 Despite this not being their typical type of execution.... Remember ✍️ Mike Patton from Mr Bungle and Faith No More fame loved this band so much he recorded an entire EP with this band and was key to getting them further exposure 👍 THIER SECOND singer was of course greatly influenced by Mike ✍️

I'd recommend Milk Lizard over this personally
FUCK THAT! 43% BURNT! DESTROS SECRET, CLIP THE APEX, ACCEPT INSTRUCTIONS! PANASONIC YOUTH ,THE DAY I LOST MY BET! HOLLYWOOD SQUARES WITH MIKE PATTON!

Oh wow, I thought ben wrote/played all the piano parts. He usually is playing live.

one of us is the killer is their most radio friendly track, also parasitic twins fits this same vibe (end of the album widower is on).
I think Black Bubblegun actually takes that place as radio friendly
@@AFormerClarity1 Both are DEP's most vanilla tracks, really.

Mike Garson is the pianist on this particular track, Mike has played with Bowie as well as Nine Inch Nails
The Dillinger Escape Plan - Happiness is a Smile
I was just about to comment the same
Oh man I LOVE this song (I love Dillinger in general, but this song is great)

Dissociation is an entire album about loss and break ups. I cry listening to my old friends band man
Option Paralysis is the best DEP's album imo. Anyway their others albums are masterpieces with peculiar details.
I see Dillinger I like, simple as that.
I loved at 7:00 just a long pause and then a "yeah" of approval. I knew this song would be the dillinger song for you!!! Great video as always!!
I always hoped that they'd write an hour long, single track record that had this feel. Unfortunately, that never happened, but I think it would have been a great idea. RIP DEP.

This is hands down my favorite song just in general

Dillinger were so good, Greg Puciato has a solo album and most of it is surprisingly chill. He's also in a super group called Killer be killed.
The first couple listens on his solo album... Were questionable. But God did the whole album start to make sense. Really good follow up to Dissociation.
The Black Queen is a must. They're polar-opposite to what Dillinger was, but man they're so good.
thank you Mr. Rojas. I was hoping for more DEP on this channel
You should check out the singer's synthpop project the black queen
That group is jawsometastic to the max yo! 🌷🤘😎🤘🖤

@@DSoverPSP 😮 no clue about the solo albums. Checking them out today
One of us is the killer is a phenomenally layered track that only has subtle hints at Dillinger's typical sound, mostly in the drums.
Best metal band ever
Thanks man, this was one of my requests as well!
please check out their song “Honeysuckle”
really showcases everything great about the band
agreed!

You would like One of us is the Killer for sure
Famous last words "I know what to expect"
Also please please react to 'I wouldnt if you didnt' or 'Dissociation' by dillinger. Thats another couple that I think are in your taste range. :)
This is comparatively accessible and also a really great song. I do like most things they've done, but with some it takes the right mood and portions for me.

Hitting on a bunch of the ones that showed up in the poll. Get ready to rip and tear tomorrow!
Check out iron thrones - I once had the crown! :)
They have quite a few songs that are similar in that they’re catchier, more melodic and “accessible.”
Who performed the keys on this track, was it Weinman?

Whoever does your mixing needs to learn how to use mids... and mix volume, you are too loud and bassy, we can barely hear the music!
