To me this game sent a clear message. “If the league does not want you to win, then you will not win.” And as a Brown’s fan now I’m just waiting for my team to go through something similar.
Do you think this is the first game they have done this? That just shows how myopic people are. You don’t care if it happens to other teams but when it’s yours you get upset.

Not even a Lions fan but I like this guy. I feel his passion for his team and it shows on the field. Frustrated doesn't even begin to cover it. Robbed. Any call that affects the score should be reviewable.

As a Lions fan a review wouldn’t have helped us. The refs claim 70 reported. The video evidence shows a little different story but it’s all hearsay. That said it does appear that the referee situation has been dealt with after the fact. Doesn’t change the outcome but sure does contradict Roger G’s stance of best officiating this year. It’s been terrible all year and I’m an official.

The video evidence under review would overturn that false claim and indeed reveal that indeed that 68 reported and overtun the flag being thrown regranting the 2 points scored. Not to mention no illegal formation called either w verification made by the WR NOT covering 68 and letting the play ride until AFTER the successful conversion? There's just too many holes not to revisit this and make the clear changes needed to protect the integrity of the game otherwise fans will NOT tolerate such blatant BS. Dan Campbell is an absolute winner!!! I am a Seattle Seahawk fan of 41 years, but the Lions are my 2nd team and Campbell inspires people with his heart and passion for his players and for winning. The Lions got so screwed tonight!!! Coach Campbell handled it in a first class way.
The Lions did not get screwed tonight. #68 was not an eligible receiver. As such, the Cowboys are not going to cover him. He was open because it was not legal for him to catch the ball.
He also was an illegal man down field and would have been flagged for that if the pass had not gone to him.
There was a 3rd infraction on the same play as stated by Troy Aikman. I believe it was an illegal formation because #68 had to be covered on the line of scrimmage by an eligible receiver; since he was not.
The bottom line: linemen who are not usually eligible receivers have to report their intentions to the ref who announces it publicly for the benefit of the defense.
The replay showed #68 going to the ref and reporting himself eligible. The ref blew it and thought it was #70. Watch the ESPN sportcenter replay. #68 reported in. Even Cowboy Troy believed that. Cheap win for Cowboys.

I've been a cowboys fan for 60 years. I feel bad for the Lions. The tape shows 68 approach the ref. Why would he do that if not to report? Even Troy said so. This is bad.

@reinc83 obviously, I have no way of knowing. In my limited research, I have found no rule prohibiting them from doing so. I found no rule that limits the number of players that can report. My not finding the rule does not necessarily mean such a rule doesn't exist. Given that Goff directed 68 to go to the ref in conjunction with the fact that Goff threw the pass to 68 and the report that they worked on that play all week, would certainly suggest that 68 did report.

There have been a few missed calls on Hail Marys but most don’t get called because the ball is uncatchable for that receiver

I am a Cowboys fan first. But I like Dan Campbell and I'm very happy for the Lions doing so well. I did question his call on fourth down and not kicking the feild goal and going to win instead of the win. This will be another contriversal game called by the ref's. Anyway I hope the lions do well and Dan Campbell is a winner. I would love for the Cowboys to win another Super Bowl but they won't this year. The Lions have a better chance. I would love to see the Lions win a Super Bowl their fans deserve it.

According to NFL Rule 5, Section 3, Article 1, there is no limit to the number of players who can report as eligible on a given play.
It doesn't say more than one player can't change eligibility but it also says "player" instead of "players". Seems ambiguous and since it doesn't explicitly state that multiple players can't switch eligibility on the same play that it is technically not against the rules.

Have the refs stopped reporting to the stadium and the tv reporters who has reported as eligible? If so, that was a terrible change. By keeping this info secret, mistakes like this become inevitable. The refs did not make it clear to the offense who they thought was eligible so the Lions never had a chance to correct the ref's mistake.
You can hear him announce #70 as an eligible receiver on the ESPN Spanish broadcast but not #68. That should have been Campbell’s (or Goff’s or Decker’s) opportunity to correct the call.

This is the NFL! If the Lions didn't know the rules about reporting in, too bad. Three penalties on that play: Illegal Touching by 68, Illegal Formation by 68 and Illegal Man Downfield, also 68. The Lions should've gone for the tie and sent it to OT. Only one lineman can report as eligible and 70 was the only one reported by the official, so there was no need for the Cowboys to cover 68.

The Cowboys didn't cover 68 because he was deemed ineligible, so the Lions weren't "robbed". The onus is on the Lions to ensure that the refs (and thus the Cowboys) know who is eligible. They failed to do that which drew two flags. Lions were apparently running a gadget play while trying to trick the Cowboys into covering the wrong guy, but they got a little too cute and tricked the refs too.

It is illegal formation IF you screw up & count a player who reported as not reporting. Because that player is now on the end... It is the same ref screw up, but seen more than one way.

Number 70 was still in an illegal formation at the end of the day. Either way, it was coming back. Refs threw 2 flags they just went with illegal touching.

They should get rid of this eligible receiver option for a lineman anyway- it shouldn't even be an option, there are so many ways this can go wrong in relation to the officiating.

Of the players on the line of scrimmage, only the two players on the ends of the line of scrimmage are eligible receivers. The remaining players are in the backfield (four in American football, five in Canadian football), including the quarterback. These backfield players are also eligible receivers.
Campbell tried getting cute, he tried tricking the Cowboys by having 3 different players lingering near the ref when one of them reports being eligible. The ref got confused instead. The act alone is super dense, because it can confuse the ref, clearly, and because that ref is going to tell Dallas who is elligible. All there is to it. When the Lions heard him announce to Dallas the wrong number, they could have corrected him. But I think they were all in on the trying to trick them thing. That's my read. They even admitted that they had hoped to confuse Dallas. That's not how that rule is supposed to work though.

If you can confuse a referee by literally telling him the number that is eligible then they shouldn't be anywhere near a football field. And how would it confuse the defense when they are told by the ref who is eligible. Not to mention, only two linemen approached the ref, not three.

If the play stands, then Dallas is upset because they'll say the ref told them the wrong number, and video has shown that they would be correct, he did tell them #70. That would mean they were cheated. If that play stands, Dallas is cheated, if reversed, Detroit is cheated. All because the ref made a mistake. How did that happen, the Lions purposely confused him. All there is to it. Watch other games, when they report a tackle eligible they do not send multiple guys over, they do not have the wrong guy raise his hand after lining up, they don't try to use a smoke screen. The reason the play works when it does is because it is the second action, the first is a fake run, which frezzes the defense to make micro decisions, in that brief moment they forget which lineman was eligible and he slips through them for a score. The other reason it works, is because teams bring in extra lineman to run the ball, hence they first action of the play freezes dudes and makes them think in a split second. The eligible player is always reported to the defense, the confusion is never supposed to be that the defense doesn't know which players can run for passes. That would be cheating and that rule doesn't gift teams the chance to cheat or you'd see that play every damn game. Lions fans are being irrational, per usual.
Dan Campbell is a fantastic coach and also a fantastic person. Refs and umpires in football, basketball and baseball as a group have never been worse than they are right now. It is really pathetic to sit and watch most any game nowadays. What really sucks is when a missed call or a bad call costs a team a victory like this game.
