The paint on the box reminds me of the floor of the porch in my parents' 40s era home. My grandfather had painted it and later covered it. During a rehab my mother uncovered it and I had to beg her not to sand off the paint. She sealed it and kept the charm of the porch/laundry.

Growing up just after the depression, I witnessed a lot of "Boxes" like this, and many a night stand, and other "needed" pieces of furniture, that came from humble supply's. I learned to "respect" the builder's intent. and need. and to see Tom show the same respect for this project as he does all his work. almost brought a tear to my eye. it did my heart. Thank you Tom for the respect and love you show other "builders" work and creations. Humble is as Humble does. Bless you.

These too were lost along with my collection of over 1000 antique bottles found in a farmers field and stored in the garden. We also lost all our family photos, us and our extended family. A simple box, but you can tell some care was taken in its construction, with details like the nicely chamfered cleats on the lid, and the feet. If my grandfather had made a chest like that, that I now owned, I would be thrilled to have it repaired like this.
I've learned so much from your videos; I'm now in the process of bringing back to life a very old and smelly machinist's tool box, the kind with both very shallow and deeper drawers. It was never much, probably a school exercise, the case is very thin steel wrapped around a wood core and painted; the drawers are simply made, but the fronts are nice. I feel able to tackle this job, and I don't fear the outcome, because of what I've learned from you, from a distance. Thank you.

This project says as much about your character and integrity as it does to your skills....you treat this artifact with the same devotion as if it were a Chippendale. Also....there's no such thing as too many clamps! Best wishes and a hug for Ella Bean.

Hi Tom glad to see you fit and well! Many years ago I inherited a box like this from an old shipwright. He had died and sometime later his family came to the yard to distribute his tools to the apprentices' and I got the box. Many years later my son when working on jobs with me used to call it 'the coffin' and hated lugging it about. As a boy starting out in a workshop the toolbox was usually the first project you would get to perform as it involved all the prep, joints, tools and finishes needed to get you oriented into woodworking. seems I already had mine ready made. I later used it to keep some of my power tools in. I also passed it on so I believe it may still be in use. Nice work Tom enjoyed the content, look forward to the next one. Thank you

My family had a military footlocker as a toy box back post WWII. Looks almost the same. Looks good where client chose to put in decor. Great job. Useful for cozy fires now. Thanks for sharing. Have a Happy Holiday.😊👋🏼🎄

Lovely to see a family treasure treated with such care & respect. I was a bit sad that the faded edge on the lid disappeared, but it looked gorgeous by that white panelling.
    Big hugs to Bella. 🤗

The attention to detail that goes into the editing your videos is just about equal to the attention to detail in your restorations. I really enjoy your content. Thank you! Andy.

Excellent work Tom. It's especially hard to match old distressed wood so the new part doesn't stand out, and you did that very well.

Indeed, looks like an old, well cared for chest, not a restored piece. Very unusual color. Matched it very well. Thank you Thomas!

So much attention to detail even for an old mouldy box from a basement. Excellent work once again, if I were the owner I would be really happy with it.

If Tom Johnson is ever going to write books, one such tome could be called “The Book of Patience.” In my own work I’m spending more time now because of his delightful examples. I am a couple of months away from having my own shop and when I work in there, I’ll have a personal rule to work on a project one task at a time and not try to finish that project too quickly. Thank you Professor Johnson for a more satisfying work life.
