Love your vids. I couldn't believe that guy set the fuel mixing stick on the paint.

Great to see this. I drove down from Sanford to see the the 2014 attempt and will make the trip back down when you're ready to cross the bay this time. It's amazing to see history coming back to the skies.

Hi Kermit. I notice that it’s been over a year since a video appeared on the Benoist Project. Did the plane ever take to the air? I really enjoyed the first 25 videos.

Why has this never flown? I cant find any videos of this plane ever flying at all...

Because it hasn't. Yet! We are still trying to sort out issues with the engine and prop pairing, and trying to get some weight off the hull. It's slow going, because it has taken a back seat to other projects in restoration.

I was surprised that with all the talented engineers around, that nobody picked up that the engine was running so rich at low rpm that it was four stroking. I thought that anyone who had ever run a carby equiped two stroke motorcycle would know about that. Fortunately the fellow with the British accent seems to be well across that.
Anyway, its only two days away from 2018, ..... has it flown yet?

You want it to under a no load condition. It will lean out under a load.

Sounds like a dragster engine ready to make a run. Chain drive too, is that correct?

How old is Andy? Used English tradesmen to earn a lot of once off RealEstate dollars in Sydney. They are priceless! No Vale Andy!

Does the exhaust have collectors? It looks like an inline 6, but there appear to be three exhaust pipes.

I am confused. Why do we keep seeing reruns and not the first flight? I have seen these vids several times now. Just curious.

We have migrated all the clips from the Benoist 2014 channel over to Kermit's channel. New clips will now appear here catching up the progress of the last years and then following the current progress.

Kermit Weeks Hangar thanks for the quick reply
      Love your content !
What ever happened to the Howard Hughes sea plane ?
Did you ship it over ?
      Did you restore it ?
      Will it fly ?
      So many questions!
      Keep up the good work!

We have the Sikorsky S-43 here at Fantasy of Flight. Still in the restoration pipeline, waiting its turn.

Why does the engine sound differ so much with this old airplane and ww1 airplanes compared to like a C172? Sounds like the RPM is fluctuating quite alot

    • @vumba1331
      @vumba1331 6 років тому +1

This is a straight six engine vs a flat 4 or flat 6 for C172, different setup and firing order therefore very different sound (-:

2 stroke. Not to mention huge advancements in engine technology between the two (carburetion in particular)

This is a very unusual engine configuration and will sound like no other: An inline six and two-cycle operating principle. Only one I know of like this. Plus, the engineering and metallurgy of the period limits it to below 1500rpm to work. It is a cross flow engine with a deflector made into the top of the piston to guide incoming mixture upward into the combustion chamber. They did not have porting like modern motorcycle engines and wasted a good bit of unburnt fuel out the exhaust ports. The bearings, as I understand, are all bushing types which need to be very wet with oil to withstand the friction and forces. I wonder if it was allowed to lean out to a clean two cycle during actual operation as this is when piston/cylinder heat is the highest and gets most prone to seizures which is touchy on the type.
