QSC K10 And Yamaha MG06X (used instead of amp or PA) Review

  • Being a jazz piano player and a singer, I have searched a long time for a good gig set up. I finally found one with this stage monitor. My keyboard is a Korg SV1. I'm so happy with my new sound and wanted to share. For a keyboard player, I can't find a better amp. Especially to make it sound like a piano. For a vocalist, this monitor is much better than any amp and get just as much power as most PA systems. Easy and portable, crisp and clear. Lightweight. Wonderful.

I just bought my first digital piano (Roland RD 88) and am so glad I watched this video. I now have more knowledge of what to buy for future gigs. I am a guitar player teaching myself piano, an older guy. I love what you play but I'll never be that good, just using chords and playing melody over them and singing songs like Dylan, James Taylor, David Gray and the likes. I love how confident you look and how naturally you perform, such a joy to watch. Anyways thanks for this very informative video it's greatly appreciated. Ciao.

I like to see what gear people are using. Didnt know you were a pianee player. But looks like a great easy basic quality set up. Didnt think i was gonna hang for the whole vid but when you started playing i just wanted to hear more . Great video 👍

When one of my very favorite UA-cam piano teachers shows up on a gear review search, I knew it was going to be great. It WAS great. Also it's awesome that you have the SV1, as that is the keyboard I have as well. Just wish I had a fraction of your skill and talent

Why the manufacturers of these systems never have an actual singer/ performer reviewing their products. Well done!! I will look into this system!

This is exactly the kind of demonstration I was looking for. Good job. I haven't linvestigated further to see if you've done others, but if you haven't you should. Loads of people assume you know too much and so their demos and tutorials are unusable for folks who are learning the basics. I dig that little mixer.

Thanks for sharing this setup, Aimee! Earlier today I searched for you on Apple Music and found your albums. I really enjoyed your arrangement of “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl).”. You did that song in a way I’d never heard before, but it was a very nice cover. KUDOS on doing it your way!

Excellent review. Love the Guitar Center. When I bring my kids, they end up playing every keyboard in the place. I'm set on getting QSC K series speakers for sound reinforcement and my mobile DJ operation which is simple and classy. QSC seems to fit that style for portability, appearance and sound quality.

Thanks for the video Aimee. I recently joined a duo and found my Fishman lacking. I recall your video from a while ago. I bought the Yamaha thanks to your helpful insights. I have the mg10 mixer. I find that my keyboard piano sounds best with the gain knob adjusted into the shaded area indicated on the knob. It looks like an extra wide delineation mark. Adjusted above the indication zone the piano voice starts to make a small sharp crackling sound unlike a normal piano. Adjusting the gain down can remove a harsh edge from the sound. The sound starts to distort quickly when the gain is turned up too high.
You probably know more about it than me, if so then you know what I mean.
This is a very good presentation because you find almost zero reviews or presentations about how to design and set up a good keyboard sound amplification system.
I put together a simple home system something like yours for leisure use only. I purchased jbl 305p powered nearfield stage monitors, made use of an on hand mg10 mixer, and I hooked up 2 yamaha keyboards both in stereo psre373 and the cool ck61.
I used all xlr cables and compatible adapters. My system is noise free and it is nice volume increase above built in speakers for sure!
But 1 thing you did that I really like is getting that nice little qsc 'stage' monitor. For your performance requirements I am sure that your little stage monitor puts out a lot more sound and volume than my small jbl nearfield monitors.
2 of those qsc monitors would give you stereo functionality. That could be cool ...

Thank you Mrs. Nolte! I recently purchased the Yamaha MG10XU and came across this video while searching for videos about the mixer. Your review of the QSC K10 has steered me in the direction of owning one of those speakers. Your honest and humble review of both has driven me in a positive direction. Being a solo musician, I search far a wide to find the right setup for myself. You made me believe that your setup is a good place to start.
Went to guitar center yesterday, and walked out with the QSC K12, surprisingly it was on sale and cheaper than the K10. Call it Lucking out to the max! Thank you Aimee....your musicianship is very inspiring! Once I get some things rolling with the mixer and and recording, you will be the first I share it with. Stay tuned, I hope not have you waiting too long!! Have a beautiful day, keep doing what your doing , you are helping so many people and that's something I hope to learn creative ways to give that back to you and others.

I had a Korg SV1 (switched to Nord because of its weight, but I loved it, loved the sounds). The legs specifically made for the SV1 were absolutely amazing and gave it a (for me priceless) stability.
For medium to small rooms I am using an AER Compact (it also has two lines, for vocals and piano or whatever). Killing sound and incredibly small, but I will definitely check out the QSC for larger venues. Sounds amazing :-)
Thanks for your generosity, the tips and the tutorials. Great stuff!!!

Very useful video, thanks Aimee. Although I don't own any K10s, I will say that I've always been impressed when I've heard anyone else using them, or indeed played through them myself. They have an expensive treble sound (that's a good thing), plenty of power and overall, I can't imagine a better all-round powered speaker... and they are light AND compact. A great investment for serious musicians. I believe the new version is awesome too.

Totally agree with you. I have recently gone back to the PA Route. I have a Qsc K 10 and it's amazing. I use a soundcraft 10 channel mixer with built in effects very similar to your set up. The Qsc has such a great sound very clear and rich. Ideal for solo singers who play guitar or piano.

Aimee..are you playing mono thru one speaker? Have you thought of another speaker and running left and right out of your keyboard into them? Nice set up you have tho, and I enjoyed your demonstration! I just mentioned it because I,ve seen some keyboard tutorials with instructors saying you miss out on a certain amount of sound from yer keyboard if you don,t go with two speakers.

Aimee- thanks for the review, which I found very informative. I was browsing looking for opinions from piano players. I mostly play at home but have occasional gigs in coffee shops, restaurants, and pubs, playing cocktail piano. ( playing only- I don’t sing at all). As my gigs are only occasional, I don’t want to invest too heavily in a P.A. Speaker so I bought an Alto TX 210 powered speaker and it sounds fine when my daughter uses it for guitar and vocals, but horrible for the piano. Really muddy in the lower register, and it makes my high quality piano sample sources ( which sound beautiful through my Bose headphones at home) sound awful when amplified. So I figured that to get accurate / realistic piano bass reproduction, I needed at least a 12 inch speaker, but preferably a 15 inch speaker. So I was very surprised to see you are getting good results on a QSC device using only a 10 inch speaker cone. Did you try anything bigger before you bought the QSC? Thanks ( by bigger I mean speaker size not volume. I think about 70-100 watts would me more than enough for the kind of gigs I get).

I am a big fan of QSC and even though like the mini Line Array systems I like the ability of having something like this that is an industry standard that could easily be used as practice, live gig, monitor system plugging into a larger PA. And as the performer "your sound" is consistent. Also you look insane when you tell the sound guy you want to use an L1 as a monitor even though they may smile and nod.

my 2 cents. Great review. You're an amazing player and have an amazing voice!
I've been using the K10 for a few years as my keyboard amp as well. Some piano, some synth, organs and wurlys. It's been incredibly handy at some very loud events where there wasn't a PA, and was great when there was a PA but used it as a monitor next to a very loud drummer. It cuts through the mix pretty well live, though having it cranked to the max it gets harsh. The perks of this thing are great sound in a small package. The K12 is definitely louder, pushes more air, better bass, etc, but while it's only a few inches bigger in all dimensions, it makes a big difference on small stages.. and 15 pounds more than the the K10's 30ish makes a difference when you're lugging it in tight spaces, up and down stairs, in and out of the car, etc. I was checking out other boxes a few years ago, some EV, Yamaha, 10 and 12" boxes, but this seemed to fit the bill for sound, volume, size and weight. Deep mode is fun for playing music in the bedroom to give it some kick.
It does have a little bit of a push at the 400hz range, so some eq helps it out there. The mids get rough when it's at high volumes, but under that they're ok.
I tried the K10.2 for a few weeks.. and a very conflicted me ended up returning it to guitar center. If you're a DJ and play loud, the K10.2 is ABSOLUTELY the way to go. While the K10's "Deep" mode gives a bit lower bass extension, that quickly goes away at moderate-high volumes. This is where the added power of the K10.2 really shines, holding that bass and clarity throughout the volume range. Really amazing, honestly. The K10.2 has a variety of different eq options, but no dedicated DEEP mode for each, which is a downer, but again, you probably have a sub for loud live stuff anyway. The 10.2 just sounded warmer and clearer over the K10 at 70% and up. The "Dance" mode offers more bass, but doesn't sound natural in the mids. I preferred Live Bright mode, and then add some 60-80hz bass via an outboard mixer. With the added power, it sounds great at loud volumes, even with the added bass.
BUT.. at low-moderate volumes, part of me preferred the original K10 for piano sounds. The mids are a bit more forward in the 10.2, and it has a little more hiss than the K10, which pretty much is near dead quiet. Hiss drives me crazy, even though you probably won't notice it live where the room isn't dead quiet. Part of me felt like the piano sounded better through the original K10, so I stuck with that. I go back and forth still in my head. Fortunately I'm no longer in a band where I'm playing events without PAs lol. The K10 held it's own with the guitars and drums, but the K10.2 would've given me that extra power to stay clear at peak volume. .. maybe I should pick it up again lol.
Just some things to consider. Different needs for different people.. and slightly different sound.
You can find both the K10 and K10.2 on ebay in great condition for 100-200 bucks cheaper than discounted prices at retailers. Unless you don't want a scratch on them, I don't see a reason not to buy used. Whoever buys the K10.2 and K12.2 that I returned to Guitar Center, will be very happy with a pristine "open box" item.
Both series are great speakers. Get the new ones if you play loud often.

Thanks matthew! I’m gonna borrow a pair of Avante boxes next week. They’re brand new and say they’re competitive with the QSCS. At nearly half the price, imma try them out and see!

Thanks for this, great video! I have the identical mixer, and am currently looking for powered speakers. Does your piano sound any different/better/worse if you use one of the stereo channels with separate left and right outs (instead of the summer L+R mono out)? I know you won't really get true stereo unless you add a second speaker and run L to 1 and R to the other, but I'm curious if there is any difference with just the single speaker. Som samples can actually lose some clarity when summed to mono because of phase cancellation; I'm playing piano but also alot of Hammond organ, so I might be considering 2 speakers instead. Anyways thanks again, hoping to hear your thoughts on the stereo connection. Subscribed :)

I’ve tried it- I don’t notice a big difference but maybe with a different keyboard or piano plugin, it might be cooler. Thx!!

I have a Roland KC350 amp and don't care for the sound too much. I've thought of using a powered monitor like you have since PA's seem to reproduce the piano sound really well. The QSC sounds really good.

Hi Aimee! Thank you so much for sharing all your talent with us! I was wondering if you have found the “thru’s” on the K10s to be useful? I am really on the fence between the CP8 or the K8.2s.

Amy, thank you for your piano and vocal talents and for your vert helpful overview of this mixer. Applause! Double-applause for your musical gifts! I am a true dummy when it comes to tech stuff. Being a singer, I have more than one question to ask you but I shall not outwear my welcome and just pose this single query: Can I control the "bass" and "treble" with this mixer? And if so, how?

    • @AimeeNolte
      @AimeeNolte  3 роки тому +1

Thanks Tony! Yes you can. There’s “low” and “high” knobs. Depending on your range, you can get the right EQ by messing around until you find something you like. If you’re unsure, ask a friend to help.

Hi Aimee, Love your videos and the huge variety of topics. I use a similar setup as you layout in this video, only using a Yamaha piano, same mixer, and EV instead of the QSC. I have one question if you would be so kind... as you're playing the Korg, is your mic stand free standing or is it somehow attached to the keyboard stand? I'm always trying to make my equipment lighter, simpler, etc. Thanks for your answer if you have a moment.

    • @AimeeNolte
      @AimeeNolte  5 років тому +1

Just a free standing boom mic stand. It helps if it’s a tri-leg stand to put one of the legs directly under the arm of the boom. It helps with balance

Aimee - there appears to be a problem with your setup. You have your mixer plugged into Input A on the QSC but the mic/line switch is lit so speaker is set to receive MIC input. Output from a mixer is LINE level and LED should not be lit on QSC. One way to avoid this easily made error is to use Input B as this is always set to LINE. Apologies if these old eyes got confused. Lovely music!

Looks like an SM58, which is good. With your voice you need a great mic, not just a 'good' mic. Try the Audix OM6 vocal dynamic mic. Amazing mic brings out the nuances and great mic for a large venue --- even better than the old standby SM58.
