In case anyone else got stuck on this step: the HDMI from the Apple TV needs to be routed directly to the TV itself (not through the receiver). This way the Apple TV audio will properly run through the optical out into the mixer, then to the receiver. Meanwhile the video will run directly to the TV to display the lyrics. Just make sure the TV source/input is set to the Apple TV, not the receiver.
Once I got that figured out, this setup has been awesome!
What if you want to use the Apple TV for movies as well. How do you bypass the mixture and audio directly to the receiver?
@@KevinNguyenTu connect Apple TV to the receiver on another AV port through HDMI
Hey now! I was expecting the whole demo song. You make setting up a karaoke system simple. Thanks for sharing.
THANK YOU VERY HELPFUL. MY KIDS PARTY IS GOING TO BE A LITTLE BETTER THANKS TO THIS.
Thank you Michael for watching. Glad you’ll be having fun with it. It’s a super blast. Have fun!!
Just tried it🤔 do I need thicker RCA cables because I'm getting almost nothing out of the mics. My mixer shows that it is picking it up, it's just not outputting anything
Michael, The thickness of the cables does not matter. Make sure the level input and output on the mixer are turned up. Are you using the same mixer and mics as the one in this video? The mics also have a level output control.
Thanks for the upload. This was really helpful setting up karaoke for my wife via Roku.
Brian! That’s great to here. Thank you for watching.
simple and str8frwrd. - very nicely done, thank you for sharing!
Thank you for watching.
Thanks a lot for this video.
What happens if I don’t use the last 2 cables that you mentioned? because I don’t have a receiver
Simple explanation. Thank you! I’m not able to display video as I’ve to disconnect hdmi in order for audio to output from Apple TV to receiver. I’ve a projector for display, receiver, Apple TV, DAC, Mixer and microphone unit in my set up. Please advise on how to display video.
I am having the same problem. Were you able to resolve this?
I also have the same problem. I dont have tV connected to my receiver i have a projector. How we can proceed with this?.
I have the same issue. Any clue on the fix?
@@khoa4377 i found the solution. You need to have ypur proyectoe with two hdmi imputs. First way is to have a proyector woth thw hdmi enters or have two hdmi cables.
Hello Sam. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Were you able to get it to work? The Apple TV will always output audio through the optical port. If you have it set up like I have it it should work. The issue most likely sounds like your ARC “audio return channel” on your receiver turned on. This is overriding the analog input from the mixer.
Mr.Nelson thanks for the nice tutorial

Wonderful...Could you share where is the HDMI of your Apple TV going. When u select "Cbl/SAT" how come the video comes out to the HDMI and the audio goes to the the CBL/Sat input..thanks
Like this walk-through and how-to on setup. Question: Would you, or anyone who reads the comments, know how to get the audio to go to both the receiver and into the mic port on an iPhone for Facebook Live? Essentially, I want to be able to see a clean audio feed to Facebook while I can hear my performance in my home.
Great singer! Good video
Eddie, thank you for sharing your setup. I am curious if this is still the best setup, and if you think it would be possible to have a set of 4 microphones.
Hi Eddie i really love your karaoke set up. Can you help me to set up my home karaoke? I have my projector, Bose L1 compact and planning to buy yamaha mic mixer like yours.
Can this setup work with just using the UA-cam app on your smart TV? Meaning I don't have an Apple TV but I do have a Chromecast but I would prefer to keep it 'cleaner' and run it off of my smart tv instead?
Straightforward setup.
Wonder how you do it with somebody at a different location using iPad?
My apple TV has no optical output/input (newer gen) but HDMI only. Would your set up still work?
Any ideas on how to do the conversion on a new apple TV to extract the audio from the HDMI since there is no Optical port?
HDMI to TV , then from TV there’s optical port output from TV for audio....voila
So you don t need to but the optical converter analog to optic... please can you explain how to to with Apple TV 4K my amplifier is a Yamaha rx v677 ...
Dis you success i wasn’t able to connect IT by Thisserant way Within Apple TV 4K and hdmi out
We have the apple tv without the Optical audio out slot. Is this still a possible set up like you did?
Hi Ed, I have a 4K Apple TV which does not have optical port. Where do I connect the other end of the optical port from optical converter. The rest of the setup is the same as yours except that I use projector
Hi Eddie, nice little vid. Thanks! I'm trying to decide on the neatest setup for my home right now - I was just wondering - why are you using the ipad and not the UA-cam directly on the apple tv?
would be interested in your reply!
It's most likely a lot easier and faster to search songs on a tablet then using a TV interface. I do it the same way except I use my phone's youtube.
Hector Camacho agreed, except that with the apple gen4 the voice search is excellent so, I still wonder if it might be neater without
Hi Eddie, i followed exactly what you did and have the same mixer however my airplay screen does not display in my tv and my mic does not work either? Thanks
I notice every setup has an amplifier. I connect my speakers directly to my mixer with XLR cables. Do you think the amplifier will enhance to quality of the sound? My speakers sounds great with just music but when trying to sing, it seems really flat. I got bad feedback issues too.
Hi I have a problem with my karaoke delay voice. My set up is so simple . I have a karaoke setup box with wireless microphone and a yamaha receiver set of speakers. I notice everytime I sing a song the voice is delayed. I there anything to add in my set up to improve my karaoke system. Thanks
Hey Eddie, I followed your instructions here but instead of an Apple TV, I connected to a PS4. However, I can’t seem to make it work.
I have the optical from PS4 to the converter. Output to the 5/6line on the mixer and then mixer output to my Onkyo but can’t make it work. Any advice would be highly appreciated.
Hi Luis, thank you for watching. Is there a setting in the ps4 to allow for optical output? Also did you switch the Onkyo receiver to allow analog input from the mixer?
@@enelson83 thank you for the quick reply Eddie. Yes, I have the PS4 setup for LPCM with optical audio.
So far, I have only be able to make it work by connecting the tv to converter and the the mixer to the front aux of my onkyo receiver.
Where do I change my onkyo setting to allow analog input? That might be what I am missing. I don’t have the user manual so I am not sure how to do that.
@@enelson83 found the manual online. That’s what I was missing. I changed the input to analog and voila! Thank you so much!
Awesome that’s great news. Enjoy singing for the Christmas!!
Hi ,
I m pretty desperate and i need some help if you could please help me .
I have a samsung smart tv 2019 , a Pioneer vsx527 receiver , and a wireless karaoke microphone . Could i connect it to the tv without Apple TV ? I m willing to pay just to Tell me how to do it and what i need to do it . Thanks alot .
Hey Eddie, Thanks for the great video explaining the setup. One question - Should the apple TV and the output from the mixer be connected to the same channel in the receiver? for example - i have my apple TV HDMI cable connected to the media player input in the receiver. Can I connect my mixer output to the CD slot for analog audio?
Did you ever figure this out? Trying to do same thing
you are not bad for singing lol!!!
Is it possible to set up and sing along to youtube videos with just smart tv, mixer, and mics?
Yes you can use the smart tv and use the optical out of the tv.
Hi Eddie, can you please share a link to those dual 6.3mm to RCA cables? thank you.

Thank you. I was able to pickup some from Amazon. I have a little issue with my setup if you could help. I'm using the same Yamaha mixer. I have an Android box and converted the signal from digital to analog. The problem I have is when I switch the digital audio on the Android TV box to SPDIF, I'm able to hear my voice from the microphone, but no sound from the TV box when a song is playing on UA-cam. When I switch the digital sound on the TV box to PCM, I can get the sound through the speakers from UA-cam, but no sound from the mic. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thank you in advance.
Awesome
Nice tutorial. My question is, I use my Apple tv to watch Plex and other applications on my tv. Can I set this up and still have the HDMI connected to the tv for use with other Apple TV apps?
Hi Patrick! Yes the HDMI cable still goes to the tv or your receiver. The video and audio will still come through the HDMI cable. This way you can still use your Appletv like normal.
NelsonandSons Review so when I got home and looked at my brand new Apple TV box, I see there’s no optical connection available. It doesn’t have one. Is there a way to hook this up, through the Apple TV box, without an optical connection?
Also, what else do I need to add to the system in order to record my singing to my laptop? Thank you!
instead of routing out to speakers, you'll need an adaptor to make it a USB signal. I have an interphase that i use with all of my recordings. It takes the large plugs (that look like guitar amp plugs) and turns it into a USB signal that my laptop can recognize, and then you can record with whatever you want. I suggest garageband. You'll need to do some googling though, to find the best one for you
Hi Eddi, I got a hdmi splitter since I have the last Apple TV generation but I have it plugged into a receiver on the cbl/sat hdmi portal as I have a projector plugged from this receiver... if I connect the rca cables from the splitter to the receiver on the rca portal cbl/sat (as the Apple TV is already connected to receiver to the hdmi portal on the same cbl/sat function) ...will this able to work? Thank you
Hi Andres, yes it should work. You will need to tell your receiver to use the RCA “analog input” for audio rather than HDMI or optical.
I think my home theater speakers don’t support live audio. Smells burned when I turn on the mics...What kind of speakers may I use for this?
hey i have apple 3rd Gen, HDMI hook up to denon 4500H to CBL/SAT, optical from apple TV 3gen to converter>to mixer but i still get audio through HDMI, i have change my denon 4500H to HDMI1 and analog to 1 but still get HDMI sound, anything you need to do on Apple TV to get to optical?
Hi there! Thank you for watching. There is no setting in the Apple TV. It always outputs optical. It’s going to be a setting in your receiver. You need to make the audio in on CBL/SAT analog. HDMI audio needs to be turned off or switched to analog. I’m not too familiar with that receiver. The only other option is another input. Maybe CAB/SAT won’t allow you to go analog. Try another input. Like DVD or Game.....etc
manuals.denon.com/AVRX4500H/NA/EN/GFNFSYipessqvi.php
Thanks, I got it figured out is on demon AVR I have to change to RCA.
Invite me to your karaoke party.
I’ll let you know when we have another! Thank you for watching
You do not said the Apple TV just connect to the mixer or your use hdmi cable to connect to the receiver
I sue the HDMI for the video only. I use the optical out on the Apple TV to an optical to rca converter for the sound.
@@enelson83 hdmi from the apple tv goes to the tv directly? or you send the HDMI for video through the receiver also? I ask because if you set the AV to karoke its only going to read that input right? so what happen to video part?
ok Y’all, I install everything that Eddie recommended from amazon and guitar center. i was having issues getting the audio and video from apple tv mixing it with the mics sound. Well as it turns out my receiver was just too old to mix the mics and video and audio from appletv. So if you’re having the issues I was having you might have to upgrade the receiver. i went from a 10yrs old yamaha to a 2020 Onkyo. Problem solved. Let the karaoke begin.
Hi Eddie! Thank you so much for this video! I’m trying to get a karaoke setup for my son’s birthday and this is sooooo much better than getting the new magic sing machine because I like to sing Japanese songs but need the romanized versions which UA-cam has! So, thank you, thank you, thank you for this tutorial!!! ❤️
Very surprised when you sing. Your singing voice is so different from your speaking voice lol. But it was great! Love it!
Hey Ed! Thanks for the video! I have a question. I have exact same mixer and receiver. I’m trying to connect it from a newer model Samsung tv that has an optical plug. I tried to connect from the tv to the converter and everything else just like you, but there’s no sound coming from the tv. I can hear the mics fine though. Any idea what I’m doing wrong? Thank you!!
Hey Rod. You’ll need to set the output on the tv to go through optical audio out. That should take care of it.
Hi Eddie can you do a video in how to remane buttons on your receiver? Thanks 😊
Hi Eddie, thank you for your video, after saw you video, i used apple tv 4k + Projector + HDMI to HDMI with Audio+ mixer + onkyo + mic. But when i select cbl/sat on onkyo, the system didn't show karaoke and mic can't work. Are you have any suggestion? Thanks
Nice vid. Can the same setup work without Apple TV and receiver. Thinking using mixer, with smart tv and sound bar as well with QSC speakers connected to mixer. I have the peavey Pv 10 AT with built in auto tune.
Hi Eddie, it was very helpful. But, I have a few question, since I'm not into home audio that much.
Can I skip the receiver? For example, I put a music player (whatever it is), and mics into the mixer, then goes directly to the power amp then speaker? This is more pro audio routing, but is it okay to skip receiver if I don't use it that much? Thanks mate.
Yes that should work just fine. You could even use a powered speaker like the DJ’s use. I use the receiver because it’s part of my home theater setup.
Are you using the optical out from the Apple TV to the mixture, but HDMI for video to the TV?
If using the Apple TV 4th Generation which it's the 4K models or other streaming boxes like Roku, Chromecast ans Amazon Fire TV it should be connected directly to the TV's HDMI inputs or use the TV's Built in smart TV feature (Ex. Samsung Smart TV, LG WebOS, Vizio Smartcast, TV's with built in Roku, TV's with built in Android or Google TV, and TV's with built in Amazon Fire TV) and have the toslink cable connected to the optical audio out on the TV to the DAC to the Karaoke Mixer
And I think most of the new Vizio TV's have both a digital and analog audio output which means you can simply skip the DAC adapter by connecting the red and white RCA's directly to the built in RCA audio outputs on the back of the TV and run the other end whether it's a Quarter-inch or RCA's into the inputs of the karaoke mixer and use the toslink audio output or use the HDMI ARC/eARC on the TV and run it directly into the TV input on the receiver separately but most of the other TV manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, LG, TCL, etc. don't have analog audio outputs which that's the only time to use a DAC adapter and a toslink 1 in 2 out audio splitter
Thanks for sharing! Upon viewing this was able to set-up my karaoke optimizing my Apple TV 3rd generation. Sound is fantastic with the use of DAC which i bought from online.
Great to hear. Thank you for watching.
Is there a lot of delay? There’s a lot of connections. How about quality loss?
Awesome explanation! Easy to follow. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
Ed, I just want to thank you for this very helpful video, and thank you for posting down the link . I just got my mixer and all those wirings needed as well as the microphone and the converter. Wish me luck this weekend. It’s gonna be a fun weekend ... I already picked up my six packs of Stella Artois last night....Beer & Karaoke? Nothing is better than that!!! Big thank you from the Big Apple!!!👍🏼
Hi eddie. Hav few questions. I have a roku connected to my TV and the sounds goes to my soundbar. Can i use the optical of my soundbar going to the mixer or i need a converter?
I followed your setup exactly, thank you, but I am getting an annoying delay of miliseconds on the voice.
The amp has a delay setup but is already in the minimum setting. Do you have advise?
If you have a smart TV you won't need an apple tv, you can just cast youtube from your phone or tablet directly to the TV
Thanks for the great video, mate! I think if I used a pair of powered speakers, I can connect them directly to the mixer’s output (L and R) without having to use the receiver. Is that correct?
Stupid question, but does it have to be connected to an Apple TV? Can it be connected straight to the TV?
Can this work IF i dont have the ONKYO receiver. ? If I get the same setup as yours, BUT i dont have the ONKYO receiver, where do I plug in the last part of the 2 cables ?
Omg the single best explanation and step by step video on karaoke I’ve seen.. 🙏
Thank you so very much for watching.
Hi, do you mind sharing a photo of your MG06X settings? I have the same mixer and my audio system is quite decent (Kef speakers, Marantz receiver), but for some reason I just couldn’t get it to sound very good. I tried playing with the settings but just can’t seem to get it right...
It takes constant adjustment until you dial it in.
Can you please help me on how to connect my Bose t4 for karaoke on smart tv ? I’m using a Bose soundbar 700. Right now I also have the soundtown karaoke mixer with wireless microphone. Thank you!
One more question where did connect the Apple TV HDMI to the tv or to your receiver. I think you miss that part.
Hi hooked it to my receiver.
Actually I figured it out. Deleted my other comments where I was asking how to do it.
Yes you do connect the hdmi to the receiver ... but you have to switch the audio input for Apple TV to analog (ie the red white rca cable that you connected from the mixer). Works great!
When I say switch Apple TVs input , I mean in your receiver, you switch to Apple TV as the video source and switch audio input source from hdmi to analog.
@@eltheniv23 does apple tv can output hdmi and optical at the same time?
iT'S TO COMPLECATED, TO MUCH OF INVESTMENT. mORE SIMPLE TO GET KARAFUN APP ON YOUR PC OR LAPTOP, WIRELESS MICROPHONES. sOME SPEAKERS, AND YOU GUD TO GO. AND NO MILES OF CABLES
I give it the thumbs up once you sing. It’s also one of my favorite songs 😊
Me too video went from good to great real quick
Hi bud, How to plug in if I have a mixing amplifier instead of the receiver ?
Hello, you have to connect the hdmi from the tv directly to Apple TV and not to the receiver right? Pls respond. Thanks.
Heard from a few people you're supposed to use PA speakers instead of home theater speakers for karaoke, but I really want to use HT speakers instead for cost and aesthetic reasons. Can you confirm that you're speakers are still working fine and how often do you use the karaoke?
Hi Chole. I’ve been using karaoke about 4-5 times a month for the past 3-4 years on the same tower HT speakers. They are completely fine. If you see how a speaker works PA vs HT they “work” the same. The big difference is the PA speakers are self powered which makes them louder! My HT are plenty loud and sound fantastic. Just make sure your receiver has enough power to run the HT tower speakers. A good rule of thumb is about 120 watts RMS.! Have fun singing!!
That voice was horrible. Nice tutorial BTW.
So my apple tv doesn’t have the optical output?
Just connect the mixer to the TV if you have a headphone or RCA audio out. Easier than using that converter.
Looking for the karaoke like the ps4 where it has a music video. Any suggestions? Thanks
I’m a youtube and I’m a do and I’m going to use this set up
Thank you for watching.
Eddie Nelson thank you for commenting on my comment thank you so much you mad my day
Thank you for this 🙏🏾 I’m thinking of ways to incorporate karaoke into my dj business. For private parties, not a bar/club environment. But I didn’t want to go the route of doing a karaoke software. This is exactly what I was looking for just couldn’t put it into words lol.
I do it for my DJ business and brings about 6k extra a year. I use Karafun as well. Only 5.99 x 3 days at the time so it works great for me . 😊
hello Eddie , I tried your setup and so far I was able to see my computer screen mirror image to my TV with good sound . coming out from my speakers , But unfortunately my MIC has no sound , but when i talk I can see the lights going up and down on the mixer ,but has no sounds . I used and follow everything you said . Will you please advise ?
thank you
Sheila D. Jone I think you need to increase the Mic volume in the Mixer and the stereo volume too. It worked for me. I am unable to post the picture of mixer here to show you my settings. I set it up on Sunday and it is working perfectly.
Cool. Nice and easy description. Very helpful
What if you don’t have a receiver but I have a soundbar
Too complicated. Someone should come up with a simple solution!
Thanks for watching.
Get a smart tv with youtube apps.
Connect you tv to mixer then mixer to AVR (AMPLIFIER) then your good to go you dont need apple tv shit!
And btw you can cast your android phone on tv directly
I noticed in your video your receiver is an Onkyo. Can you use this setuo with Homepod or other airplay 2 compatible speakers?
If your receiver has AirPlay 2 capability then you might. You would need to set that input to output audio over airplay 2. If you have a smart TV capable of airplay 2 then you might as well. You could bypass the Apple TV. I would have to do some research on that. That would be a great feature! Thank you for watching.
Sir 1more question, i wont to play keraoke song through my android phone, is this possible,
Yes that is possible. You will open the UA-cam app on your phone and it will play on the UA-cam app casted to the Apple TV.
@@enelson83 thanku sir
Hi Eddie, thank you for the information and great video. I have a question, what is the manufacture and model of the speakers you are using in your setup. Thanks!!!
The ones in the video are infinity’s. I now have the Klipsh RP8000A
would this setup work with two big homepods in pair stereo (as home theater speakers sync’d to the apple tv 4k)
You could play the music through the homepods but not the mics. Apple is very particular about their integration with other products. Great question though. If anything changes I’ll keep you posted.
After millions of video, this is what I am looking for 🔥🔥👍 nicely explain 🙋♂️ thank you so much!
Happy to hear. Enjoy the singing.
Why do I need Apple TV? I have a smart TV...would I still need it?
Yes you can use your smart tv instead of the Apple TV. My smart tv function is not working on mine. As long as the tv has an optical or rca audio output. Enjoy.
Do the setup works without reciever?
Too much distortion in th sound
Can you use a microphone with cords?
Hi Jane! Yes you can use corded mics. As long as the corded mics can plug into the mixer you should be fine.
Eddie Nelson thanks for the reply. What type of cord that goes to the mixer?
They call them XLR cables. The only thing you need to be careful of is you may need external power to run the corded mics. I would get the wireless ones in the video. They have worked perfectly and you can buy rechargeable batteries for them. They work from about 200 feet too so there are no delays or drop outs.
Hi Nelson. How do you eliminate the feedback while singing so close to the speakers?
Hi Ernesto, if you are going to be close to the speakers make sure the mic is pointed away from them. Pointing the mic at the speaker causes feedback. It’s best if you can move farther away from the speakers. There isn’t another option other than moving further away from the speakers. You can adjust the gain levels on the mixer too.
🎙Satchmo🎺
Very solid setup, all the way down to the labels. User friendly is the key for my family and this nails it.
Thank you for watching Brian. Have a great Christmas!!
How can you setup with a newer Apple TV without the optical port?
Hi Stephen. The best thing to do there is if you have a smart TV is use the optical out of the tv to the mixer. You can then bypass using an Apple TV.
Great video!!! Can i bypass the mixer if i have an amplifier?
No because you need to mix the audio track and the vocals together. Unless the aml has a mic input and has a built in mixer.
What if i dont have apple tv
Great setup step by step. Thanks we can also use android tv box on this correct.
Yes that would work as well! I wanted to make a video using the tv but my smart tv isn’t smart anymore. It’s actually a better setup using the android TVs platform. The best part is you can cue up songs to play next and other people on your network with the UA-cam app can add their own songs as well. I will do a video for this soon. Thank you for watching.
Nice! This is the long time im looking for. But my case is nvdia shield. Can you do that using nvdia shield this time? Did appletv can output hdmi and optical at the same time? What about the audio coming from hdmi?
when I make my own rhymes can I put it on the tv screen then sing along like a karaoke how do I do that ?
Yes you would need to upload your own rhymes to UA-cam. Once you did that you can go to your channel and sing to your own rhymes.
Awesome , should have watch this before bought my mixer.
@hieu Thank you for watching.
Edifier s3000pro active speaker with Apple TV karaoke set up..
Superb
The Apple TV connect to TV or receiver?
To the receiver. Then the audio optical out of the Apple TV to the converter. Converter to mixer.
This is the most informative karaoke set up video I’ve seen in UA-cam. I’ll purchase all the hardwares listed below, except that, I’ll use my old Bose GSX 321 series II as my receiver. Sir, do you think it will work? I’m using Apple TV and it’s optical input/output to listen my music. The Bose console has no HDMI input. If I’ll remove the Apple TV optical cable from my Sony Bravia , I’m worried this set up will not work. I need your advice . Thanks !
great explanation , but why doesn't anybody put a sketch showing how all of the pieces are interconnected.Working in the electrical field for many years ,one of the items of the overall job was diagrams, schematic, interconnections etc etc .......your explanation works where I'm drawing out the pieces as you describe it . overall pretty good stuff .thank you !!!
Is it necessary to have an amplifier if I have a set of powered speakers/monitors? Could I go straight out of the mixer and into the speakers, in that case?
ALSO: If you have a newer Apple TV without the optical out, but you have an unused optical out on your TV, could you use that into the converter, if the Apple TV is going into the flatscreen? I know that's jamming another step into the signal, which generally isn't what you want to do.
