Artillery is arguably the single most important component in a modern army. Nice to see them get respect.

I'd argue its the second most important, behind the infantry.
In WWI the French had the best artillery in all of Europe. While the Germans had the best infantry.
The French were able to defeat the German guns via excellent counter battery fire, and once the german guns were silenced. They were able to greatly weaken the German position.
But the French infantry were still unable to overwhelm the German positions, even when French Artillery had achieved fire superiority.
Infantry are the Queen of Battle. Artillery is an incredibly important part of any army.
But as WWI taught us, and as the Russians learned to their Chagrin during the Ukraine conflict, it all comes down to the infantry. Time and time again.

The artillery knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the artillery from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't.
But, I always say the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence.

Was at Ft Sill in 1971 . Some things are the same, some modern digital equipment. It is still the greatest killer on the battlefield

As a teen growing up on Fort Sill i loved hearing the sounds of freedom every day while in school. Now as an adult i get to hear the sounds of freedom from the Marine side of things at Quantico. Wouldn't trade it for nothing!

This is coming from a army vet that spent 7 years in 2 FA units.
When fire missions were going on most of those soldiers were not in full kit. The most they wore was the eye pro, ACH, and gloves. Most of the NCOs i knew back then basically said it makes no sense to have all this weight on when we need to move fast to get rounds down range. If were to get attacked, it wouldn't come from small arms, it would come from the air and if were getting mortared or shelled, no vest or plate is going to save us.
So they basically wore that stuff when the higher ups were coming around.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of Vietnam war FA where they were wearing shirts let alone full kit. Anyway, like most things when the pencil pushers aren’t around different rules apply

Yes, towed guns are very vulnerable. In extreme environments, a crew would fire a Salvo, load up the howitzer and drive to a new position and repeat.

So, these days, the Assistant Gunner is responsible for loading the 105 mm round and then closing the breechblock?! How come the RTO is sitting near the Gunner? Shouldn’t he be sitting in the back of an M1038 Humvee, instead? Both AN/PRC 77 and DR-8-A are replaced with the so-called “Sled.” How convenient. “Fire Control Computer” and “Gunner Display Screen” are something new (for me). Even in this digital age, that M2 Collimator must be here to stay. SSG Driscoll forgot to mention M119 - with powder charge 7, the maximum range is 17,500 meters, with powder charge 8 + RAP (Rocket Assisted Power), the maximum range is 19,500 meters. By the way, is that FP 240?

Let’s be realistic, that plate doesn’t really do anything, it’s like putting on one piece of armour with one luck state but you need the other set to really see different. Sure that plate might protect your major organ but the lower half of your belly and the side of the abdominal area all expose and if you get shot in any of those spot you’re going down instantly still. Idk is it really worth the extra weight, I guess is what I’m wondering.

This just shows me why i like the Air force and Navy more then the US army. You need less people to fly a Plane and a lot of things can be automated or Optionally manned. and These land based weapon don't have that option.
This seems a lot more complicated and time consuming then i imagined. and requires a lot of people to man this equipment. but it's light and can be transported easily. but Can't a Suicide Drone just destroy this equipment since it can't move quickly away from a drone? and This would require 10S of thousands of shells i don't know per day or very often and i don't know if the US can keep up with that kind of Artillery fighting..
As of March 2024, the US is producing around 28,000 155 mm rounds per month, with plans to increase production to 70,000-80,000 rounds per month by the end of 2024. However, the US may not be able to meet its ammunition production goals without additional funding. The Army plans to increase production to 60,000 rounds per month in 2024, 80,000 per month in 2025, and 100,000 per month in early 2026. The Army is investing in government-owned munitions plants, including a $1.5 billion investment in shells to increase production capacity.
The US has a limited number of M119 howitzers, which are 105 mm howitzers that are effective for light units. The M119 has a shorter range and less explosive power than the larger 155 mm caliber, and it has limited projectile types. The M119 fires standard NATO semi-fixed ammunition, including the M1 (HE) High Explosive projectile with a range of 11.5 km (7.1 mi) and the M60 (WP) White Phosphorus smoke generating projectile with a range of 15.1 km (9.4 mi).

Yeah but planes require more specialized training (pilots, weapons officers if a two seater) are generally more vulnerable to AA systems and if an accident happens, that's billions of dollars down the drain and dead specialized military personnel.

Driving a tank is something any idiot can do which is why they join the US army in the first place. even the United States Marine Corps has F-35 and The US navy has them too. The US army has no Fighter jets which is why the US army is Old and I wish optionally manned Tanks existed but they don't.

Blame the army for supplying trash. 1) artillerymen don't really need optics on their weapons 2) if anyone should be issued world class electronic hearing protection, it's artillerymen, and he's not issued any, that's the Army's problem.

Why would you need an optic on a weapon you wont shoot in bootcamp lol, at their units they'll have optics. Also have you seen the way people set up their kits in the arty community? Depending on your billet only the most junior will have spaces for mags on their PC.
This is a training unit lol. Why would they need optics for their weapons? And why does he need a fancy PC? As far as ear protection, a lot of artillery men don’t wear them because yes you need to be able to hear what’s going on around you. Blame the army for not giving them nice ear protection that lets you hear voices but mutes everything else

Weird how manual it is....weird...I can think of tons of consolidation and automation. Did they just manually pick it up in this day and age? 😂very bad design. Uh why can't they pre-make the bullet rounds instead of manually load, in fact, it can automatically load...design looks like it was done in the 90s
When you replace a person with a complex machine with moving parts and digital computers, you get mechanical and electronic failure, and you get a useless piece of equipment. More maintenance, more weight, more logistical support needed, more money spent.
The fact you give the 90s as a reference to old technology says everything about your lack of understanding.
From say, 8 kilometers from the target to 17 kilometers to the next target, the shells need different charges. If they all had maximum charge, shorter range shooting might be pointing the gun barrel almost straight up to the point the shell would be in the air a long time.A skeleton crew can get the gun shooting OK if they have to.Towed artillery can get into and out of areas that self propelled howitzers can`t.There is plenty of automation in the army and self propelled guns are quite large and expensive to operate and maintain and they make big juicy targets.It`s not weird it`s common sense.

Neither Ukraine nor Russia controls the airspace.These towed artillery pieces wouldn`t be used much in this kind of a war without air defenses able to protect the gun and it`s crew.I`m not sure how many 105 mm howitzers the USA employs in most war games.They sure wouldn`t be doing it like Ukraine and Russia seems to be doing.
