I've listened to every possible recording of this song. I love a few for different reasons, but this one just shot up to the top 3. That pause at 12:40 literally blew my mind and I yelled out "holy shit!!!" and proceeded to replay that section a few times. I haven't heard any other pianist make that pause so strong. The sound of nothing, made more sound to me than the other actual sounds, if that makes sense. I'm halfway thought learning the piece, when I get up to that part you can bet your ass I'm copying that.

and i dont eally mean to be arrogant or a mr knowitall but this is not a song -- it is the last mvt of the d minor partita for violin solo by bach - go listen to hillary hahn chaconne in d minor. but ill say mariam's performance of the bussoni transcription is.... well she makes it her own

@@Yaimdan I'm not into the computer culture and really practically never read comments so sorry if i did a 'my-bad' (ref. to the a year ago comment) ..it's just that having trained as a concert pianist intensively in the 80's if someone refers to Rachmaninovs 2nd piano sonata, for example, as a ''song'' it can get to me a little - again sorry and meant no disrespect.

Another free style performance of Bach! Her long fingers are dancing on the keyboard in a very lively way. I really feel how the composition by Bach is perfect and applicable for any style of performance.

Easily up there with my absolute favorite performance by Michaelangeli. She is the only one who compares to his. Bravissimo! Surely, I would have giving her major 'bravos' if I was there to witness this stellar, deeply felt performance of the Chaconne in D!

At first I thought she was a young man.! :) But seriously, this the best and most satisfying performance of the Bach-Busoni Chaconne I have heard on you tube. Of course, the changes in tempo are very personal, but they are very satisfying and acceptable, particularly as they bring out the excitement in certain sequences. Decades ago, I had heard a performance on 78 r.p.m's by Eric Thenberg. I never again found an interpretation of the Bach-Busoni Chaconne that satisfied me till Miriam came along. Thank you, Miriam.

It certainly is an awesome performance of a Busoni-Bach musical dialog; the criticisms that this should be or sound Baroque are pointless. It is what Busoni intended it to be, and this pianist captures that Titanic Romantic spirit interplaying with the genius of Bach. Of course it´s personal (that´s the whole idea of Romanticism).
For a fantastic Baroque interpretation, I would recommend guitarrist Paul Galbraight´s arrangement (here on UA-cam). It is among the slowest (20 minutes) interpretations I´ve heard, but what he does with the rising and falling tensions is unearthly.
This is one of those pieces that allows a wide range of approaches and interpretations, but I agree, not all takes are convicing. Mariam Batsashvili´s is. And if one thinks she´s exagerating her poise and making faces, I think she´s just one with the music and it shows physically.

Just look to the left hand and to her fingers first and then you will see only a woman!
Yes this piece is one of the most beautiful with the last Beethoven sonata.
Although if her interpretation is exceptional you should listen to Michelangeli more academic but with an inamovible tempo. I heard him playing this piece 50 years ago at least you can find it on record.

This must be completely how Busoni envisioned this piece being played. Her amazing render at 5:10 contrasted with her interpretation at 6:10. I love this. Fantatstic! Bravo!

Merci pour cette magnifique et très sensible interprétation de Busoni. Un seul « bémol » : l'Étude #5 pour la main gauche de Brahms traduit à mon sens beaucoup mieux l'esprit de la pièce d'origine.

At 8:06, the right hand, or "melody" voice is completely lost, undermines continuity of Bach's long line.

Amen, Simon is absolutely correct. She's a Romantic pianist. Does she not know the Baroque style- or does she think Romanticism is better, even for Bach? With Bach, less is more. Let's have some straightforward playing, some emotional restraint!

the rubati.... hmm not what I like about the chaconne. Too fancy. Should keep a more steady tempo in my opinion. Some places are interesting though. For me what Bach wrote is enough to impress me. Nothing to add. Even on piano just play what bach wrote and its fine. Keep the voicings in one octave. No need to transfer it through the octaves to keep it "interesting". And the tempi.... this is not Schubert...

I didn't mean to criticise the performer... other than chosing a romantic, questionable arrangement to perform. The performance in itself is nice and at some point also quite interesting. But it is just far away from Bach! It should say in the Title, "Bach/Busoni".
