Jazz music will widen your musical vocabulary and make you a better musician! It will make your ears train to listen and comprehend harmonically complex stuff! It will help a guitarist to re imaging guitar in entirety rather than 1st position /second position!
@@RoRo-vr6wxtheory DEFINITELY HELPS, especially as u get into more complex ideas. Jazz can definitely be a complex genre to get into, and it can be a bit much if u don’t have even maybe just the basics of theory down. Unless you rather just copy what is being played and remember shapes, than u don’t need to worry, but to grow and understand it is really advisable to learn the theory behind it
learning any new genre in music will make you a better guitarist. A jazz cat could learn a thing or two from a rocker or a country picker. Its all groovy.😎
Just switched from being a bass player of 30 years to guitar.. Played rock/metal for years... But I wake up in the middle of the night to learn jazz melodies... I never woke up to play rock.. ...just usually passed out afterwards 😆 cheers from Vegas.!
Im 15 and just started practicing guitar. I had a guitar since i was 4 but never wanted to try till recently. My dad shows me a thing or two here and there but this is really helpful since i wanted to reach into different areas and genres of playing my guitar.
Thanks for lesson. I used to play guitar by ear. It was very painful and calloused my ear lobe. Watching this video has taught me to use a plectrum instead and Never! Never! the ear. Thank you.
Still working on Tune Up from the free PDF and started Minor Blues in the Chord book. I look forward to adding these tunes to the queue for a future date. Its an inspiration!
This is great news! Been playing guitar for quite a while but new to jazz. Even that simple example of Autumn leaves you gave is inspiring me to practice. I know a few jazz chords and I'm learning arpeggios, and I've found that even that's enough to get started. It doesn't have to be amazing or complex in the beginning, it can be simple and pleasing right away. Thank you!
Some nice suggestions. Starting with Perdido and 'Pent up House' worked great for me because they are almost exclusively made of 2 5 1s and 2 5s. They are such common cadences in jazz, so playing over those progressions repeatedly really helps you build a repertoire of licks that move with those changes and gives you melody fragments that you can apply to new songs. I got the suggestions from Jans Lasen. I would say his video for week 1 and this for week 2. Autumn leaves is great but it moves around a bit more, you don't want to spend energy remembering long chord sequences to start with.
I find so what difficult because I can t play arpeggios the way I would do on a normal standard. You must know the modes of different scales and understand harmony
@@jamieholroydguitar You bet, well deserved. I'm one of those Blues, and Blues-Rock Dudes, looking to learn some more Jazz, and few people, if any do it better than you, man I'm excited to check that PDF out! Thanks again 🙏
Awesome video mate. You’ve got a great teaching style. I’ve played guitar for most of my life so I’ve picked up kinda jazz style playing abilities along the way. However to be able to play with anyone else and not be a solo hog because all I know are ropey “jazz style” solos, I really want and need to learn the fundamentals! Haha! And also as you say, to be able to play some of the songs I love. I’ll be starting with these three after watching this and I’m off for a look at your other videos to start learning right now haha 😄
here's the thing, these tunes might be easier to get into--but they aren't "easy tunes". Work over a tune is never done. Tunes like Satin Doll often get the short end of the stick at jams because they are "easy". Same with Autumn Leaves. Show me 1,000 amatuer musicians talking crap about these tunes and I'll show you a true pro using Summertime to dig deep and tell you the meaning of life with his or her solo. Tunes aren't boring, people are. Blue Bossa is a great tune to start learning changes, yes. But it is also a great tune to practice improvisatory composition techniques like thematic development or line contour. That's besides practicing subs, but make those subs tasty--it still has to make sense melodically too :)
@@jamieholroydguitar good lesson. Just a criticism at how these tunes get written off as "easy" when they are, in fact, beautiful compositions worthy of a great solo or two from any level of musician.
Well I've tried 3 times to download your free guide. Each time there is a message saying to watch for an email and click on the confirm link, but no email ever arrives.
thanks for this intermediate approach. I often feel like music theory goes here is a triad, now here's everything. it feels like elementary school. okay here's the alphabet ABCD etc then here's a medical dictionary. and they skip over the see spot run over Jane before he falls down the hill with Jack.

Jamie this is brilliant, so helpful and accessible for beginners like me! You have a lovely tone from your guitar, too
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you found it useful
‘....stylistically coherent....’ Oh yes Jamie - understated class, as always. Excellent tuition too👌🏻

The mic quality on the guitar sounds really good here. I kept thinking I had speakers on accidentally even though I had headphones in.
Thank you

Thanks Barry. I'll hopefully have ebooks on these out in due time. But you're best off sticking with Tune Up and the Minor Blues for now!
Another encouraging video Jamie. I think I will take on Djangos minor swing today...I do almost no strumming anymore.
Thanks and good luck! I also have a minor swing web article that you might find useful. Just search Jamie Holroyd then Minor Swing.
I am mainly a metal guitarist, and I thoroughly enjoyed this lesson. Always loved jazz guitar.
Thank you! 🤘
jazz is so difficult but so beautiful
Just getting into jazz. Sounds pretty fun to play on guitar
Do people gonna ignore The “lick" at the very beginning🙄
I've heard it so many times, that when I hear it, itt stands out so so much. Can't miss it
That awkward moment when you realise you played "the lick" without even planning on doing it for a comedic reason... 😐
I've just bought a Gretsch g5410t limmited edition electromatic in teal blue and im loving so far!
Very nice!
Teach me your ways master
Amazing video - thanks Jamie!
Thanks!
Was there a lesson?
Love this video, thanks very much Jamie!

hello i was curious what picks you use? thank you
The 2m purple Dunlop picks

what is the name of the melody in the beginning of this video?
It’s just some improvisation over minor swing
But as a beginner, how do I learn how to form a chord with a melody?
Start by learning drop 2 chords
