To me, influencers are sales or marketing people. (I'm speaking about adults now.) I don't see the big deal about this industry except when it uses minors. I see a lot of this on IG, wherein a parent influencer has their kid model different brands of clothing or play with certain toys. But unlike kids who are actors who have certain laws protecting them (and even then it's kind of sus), the influencer industry has no protections. They leave it up to the parent I suppose.
You could instantly tell that Taylor was an influencer - the forced smile, the docile blinking & the telltale rod up the bum posture. I will only tolerate influencers when I need to know how to operate something - never what to buy. If you're selling/pushing something on me, I'm instantly suspicious.

I'm skeptical that this marketing strategy is sustainable on this scale. She says influencer sponsorship is a half trillion dollar industry. That would mean for this arrangement to be profitable to companies, then tens of millions of consumers would have to buy many trillions of dollars worth of product just because an influencer endorsed it -- that's not happening. My guess is that influencer peddling is here to stay, but most of these sponsorships will vanish eventually.

You do understand that just because a bunch of products are promoted on influencer channels, that does not mean those companies are profitable, right? Most of the stuff I've seen being hocked is produced by fledgling companies that didn't even exist a few years ago. This is the kind of thing that happens in commerce when money is "free". Now that interest rates have normalized higher, I expect a lot of these companies will discontinue their less fruitful marketing campaigns. As I said in my original post, I'm not predicting that all of the product placement will go away, but I expect that most of the sponsorship dollars will dry up.
