Do you need a DyAc+ monitor to play your best? feat. BenQ Zowie XL2746K

  • If you're here, you probably want to unlock your potential to play your best. Monitor definitely matters and one point of interest is the new DyAc+ tech from Zowie. Is it better than regular DyAc? What about 240Hz with DyAc+ vs 360Hz?
    It might offer some advantage, but tech is getting so good now, it's unlikely it's going to make that much difference. Unless you're going pro, where you need everything to be as perfect as possible, then maybe. If you're just a competitive player, I'd rather recommend a 1440p 240Hz monitor. And between 360Hz and 240Hz DyAc+? DyAc+ maybe very slightly a tiny bit better, just because of the blur test in Overwatch that we do. But in game? I didn't think about it or notice it, it's more about game sense and how well I'm playing in other ways.
    You should know what to expect from BenQ Zowie monitors, good quality, always enjoyed playing on them, pretty cool look, competitive-player focused, and the settings changing puck is great. So yeah, if you're after a great 240Hz 1080p monitor for competitive play, it's great. But please, Zowie, give us a 1440p version!
    I'll upload my settings to the site in the next week or so and leave an update here.
    Thanks to BenQ for sending this out for testing!

    I originally purchased a cheap 144Hz monitor that included a "anti-ghosting strobe" feature. After seeing how much better it looked (but with unplayable brightness) I decided to return it and go all out on the XL2546S. When toggling Dyac on and off, I can absolutely tell a difference; it becomes even more noticable with desktop use like dragging windows around and still being able to read them or scrolling really fast down a page and being able to read it.

    I recently changed from an alienware 240hz to the XL2746K, and I will say you can tell the difference. That being said the only tangible change is the noticeably reduced ghosting, (mostly during fast movements) which to me is only advantageous given that I found the ghost artifacting on other monitors to be quite distracting during play.
    To anyone already on 240/360 hz I wouldn't recommend switching unless you find this issue to be a big deal. All other elements of this monitor are pretty standard when it comes to high refresh rate displays, and many others come with more appealing features like better colour accuracy, larger display size and smaller bezels. (XL2746K has 2/3rds inch bezels)
    I LOVE this monitor and DyAc+ but it's not some silver bullet when it comes to endgame esports displays.

      I went from 1440p / 165hz IPS back to 1080p / 240hz TN (& DYAC). It's a night and day difference and really upped my game due to less input lag overall, but also with how clear it is.

    I can definitely tell the difference in clarity when using black frame insertion on my monitor. Which I believe is a similar technique.
    The reduction in motion blur is big and I definitely turn the feature on if I can maintain max framerate in a game.

  • @apoketo
    @apoketo 2 роки тому +16

    Black frame insertion (the non-marketing term for DyAc) is also good because you get increased clarity without needing a machine that can drive these very high frame rates, e.g. even 60hz BFI will blur less than regular 120hz sample-and-hold. For a more in depth look at this stuff I suggest Aperture Grille's (the guy whose videos got tftcentral and HUB to change their response time methodology) review of the BlurBusters tuned Viewsonic XG270 where he measured close to CRT clarity, at least in the middle of the screen (someone send that man more monitors to test).

  • @I2obiNtube
    @I2obiNtube 2 роки тому +6

    The motion blur reduction with dyac is 100% observable with just the UFO test. Imo it's a must but I agree I don't think it will override everything. I haven't tried 360hz or above so maybe more refresh is big but from everything im hearing more refresh isn't a massive change over 240hz. plus you need fps to support going that high i would think

    • @WorldKeepsSpinnin
      @WorldKeepsSpinnin Рік тому +1

      Not really, it’s cool but is it 300$ more then other monitors cool? No. Provided your monitor has not much ghosting without any backlight strobing you will be just fine. Does it help - sometimes yes, but it’s not something that’s going to make you a more consistent player. Buying a mouse that fits you better with its shape would make you 10000x better then DYAC ever could. Same with mousepads.

  • @Hybred
    @Hybred Рік тому +1

    Imo 1080p still looks fine and I think it does for most people too and they just don't realize it. What I mean by that is the reason 1080p looks so bad in modern games is because of TAA, 1080p looks awful with TAA you need at least 1440p or above for TAA to look good, and every modern game defaults to TAA or forces it.
    To give it a fair comparison to another scenario it's like watching a 1080p video encoded in a very compressed codec vs a lossless one, or a 1080p video in low bitrate vs high bitrate, 1080p TAA just has weird problems that make it look even less detailed and lower of a resolution. So my advice is to try other AA solutions if avalible and if they're well implemented or use the render scale option at 133%+ to render at 1440p with TAA and you'll be fine

  • @Hybred
    @Hybred 2 роки тому +4

    I think having no monitor blur is a huge advantage however dyac+ (backlight strobing) only reduces it not completely eliminates it, and even if it did theirs still varying levels of cross-talk double imaging. If you use a high end CRT however with perfect motion clarity you'd see how well keeping track of targets and tracking is. If backlight strobing ever becomes perfect I think it will be a must have, all forms of this tech have some sort of compromise depending on who makes it like using a lower hz, reduced brightness, crosstalk, etc. Dyac+ is definitely the best thus far, I'm interested to see how well it can get and especially on OLED panels since their response time is so fast, seems like a great combination if some love is put into it. (R&D, which currently there isn't. Only Zowie's TN panels get proper R&D)

    • @FerventReminder
      @FerventReminder 2 роки тому

      Do many people still use CRTs though, surely there are some pretty big compromises from using them?
      What's an example of a good one?

    • @Hybred
      @Hybred 2 роки тому +1

      @@FerventReminder The GDM-FW900 CRT is one of the best, perfect motion clarity.
      The only downside of a CRT is their size and weight, image quality and performance wise they're perfect. Also the fact since they're all old now, if you were to buy a previously owned one it would only be half as bright as it use to be, and also they're impossible to repair now that they're not manufactured anymore and, and that scarcity also brings up price but that's not downsides to the tech its downsides to the fact they're not made anymore/are all used

    hi zy, you might not read this but if you do, not only do i think it would be interesting to make a test of high refresh rate monitors with different monitor brightness absolute levels (due to the backlight and hence the strobing), but also specifically test dyac and dyac+ with brightness.
    why i say this is because of it apparently being that the backlight on the zowie monitors is what give the dyac advantage and what makes it better than say asus's ULMB.
    there was a video comparing the 2 monitors in a simply very direct, basic, straight to the point way (no fancy editing, branding, screen recording, just good quality irl recording), and the results were obvious. they did a ufo test side by side right up front of the monitors' screens with a camera, which may refer to what you said about needing a certain way to pick it up, and it was extremely noticeable.
    the backlight alone of monitors reduced blurriness, and with the added effect of the asus monitor having ghosting especially with its ULMB, the dyac+ was an obvious instant choice...
    (and because of this being backlight orientated, of course the only brightness settings that would matter are the monitor itself, unless there would be known issues with brightness in like a game used with in the test or whatever...)

    I do think most pro's if not almost all pro's are in love with Dyac+. While spraying a weapon in CS:GO you will get more picture clarity, which can make or break a good spray / transfer.
    Also BenQ always market Dyac+ with CS:GO. I do think this game is an exception to what you described in this video.

    Blur reduction tech>Hz. A few Milliseconds aren't going to win you a gunfight. It's a misconception aiming is down to base human reflexes. It mainly has to do with executive function reflex. Which is your ability to react to complicated information requiring judgment and decision making. This decision making can be as simple as tracking which way an enemy is going and to have a solid concept of movement in space. For these purposes, aiming initial shot becomes a 300ms+ process at the fast end, and even pros rarely hit follow-up shots at max Fire-rate on certain guns.
    I'd say in games with any degree of high-motion, MBR quality is going to the most important factor. I went as low as 120hz on a 240 panel simply because the MBR was even *better* than my Benq with Dyac. Of course, I track-aim. But until they hit ludicrous FPS, the perceived increase in motion clarity by just spamming refreshrate is going to be less important than the tech on the monitor itself.

    Hey Zy, great content as usual!
    Could you perhaps elaborate on the comment of 1080 is just not doing it for you any more?
    I'm still on an XL2420T and have never felt the desire of going 1440p (or higher refresh rate as my hardware could't supply more than ~150FPS anyways).
    Also I'm just so used to 1080. On the other hand, I haven't even tasted the "forbidden fruit" yet.
    As I've recently upgraded my rig to a 12600k paired with a 3080, I'm now wondering if it's about time to up the monitor as well.
    Very happy to see you try (and hopefully enjoy) Apex. It's my love / hate relationship.

    • @landon1136
      @landon1136 2 роки тому

      if you don’t feel like you want a sharper image than 1080, just don’t upgrade. It’s nice but doesn’t really give a advantage in gaming. 1440 or 4k looks much better to me personally though compared to 1080 but thats probably partially because I have really good eyesight so I can see the lack of detail even from a reasonably far distance. I stick with 1080 though because my phone and ipad are high res so I can use that for stuff where resolution matters more and i can prioritize other features on my gaming monitor. If you have the money though, there are many good 1440p 240hz monitors available

    Hey Zy I'm looking to upgrade from a 165hz 1080p monitor. To either a 240hz 1440p or acer 390hz. I play apex comp at C tier level and for competitive play would you recommend 1440p? I'm also coming from really low resolutions in CSGO (1024x768)

    • @RocketJumpNinja
      @RocketJumpNinja  2 роки тому +6

      Once I got onto 1440p I even chose 144Hz over 240Hz 1080p, so yeah personally I'd recommend going 1440p. That said, I wasn't trying to be super competitive, so I can't say 100%. I think unless you're going for actual pro level, you're probably better off with the higher resolution (as long as your PC can handle the higher demand on processing). If you are going for pro, then I hear that 390Hz monitor is the way to go? Check some reviews, see what Optimum Tech recommends, he's great with this stuff and a solid FPS player.

      @@RocketJumpNinja Yes, Windows scaling is shit. But 200% scaling at 4k is ok for me, apparently because it scales perfectly from full hd (like exactly 2 times more then 1080p). At 28 inches I'm comfortable, although the difference is not as noticeable as between 1080p and 1440p. But at the same time, 125-150% scaling at 1440p is blurry, while 200% scaling at 4k is not. I switched back to 60Hz to prove a point in one video, could still play really well (actually hit MORE mid air rockets somehow), so while my tracking aim is definitely better on 240Hz vs 60Hz, I don't think 240Hz VS DyAc VS DyAc+ is really worth mentioning, unless you want to be pro. The clarity of the higher resolution seems to help me more on distance shots. Up close battles, it doesn't matter, of course. And viewing the web/editing/doing any work is painful on a 1080p display, so overall, I'm still going for 1440p, regardless of motion tech.

    I live for dyac. Games like Apex I can hardly see half the time because so much shit is going on, the environment has a lot of detail, and you're always on the move (makes less sense in arenas but if you queue pugs and hot drop things get really blurry lol, or if you reach the final ring in ranked with half the lobby still alive and all hell breaks loose). Never owned a 240hz monitor though so I guess that combination might make dyac a little less valuable? I had a dyac capable monitor years ago and have missed it dearly since, finally picking up this monitor though so hooray. Keeping in consideration the million garbage esports monitors out there with insane ghosting problems and I think dyac is nice as even just a guarantee that the monitor won't ghost like crazy.
