    This also requires a tremendous amount of luck, whenever I worked with others they always left after a while or were always extremely late with everything(after rescheduling the milestones over and over again). This happened when I was 13 and tried to make a game with a friend of mine, throughout when I was 25 working with professionals - it's not much better when they get paid either. Better, but not by much. People tend to be completely unreliable, I really envy anyone who can find others whose interest doesn't stop after the initial few weeks.

    • @JonasTyroller
      @JonasTyroller  4 роки тому +15

      Well yes. It does require luck. I think you can definitely increase your chances by only working with people who have finished stuff before. Also if their initial hype levels for the project are unreasonably high at the beginning that is a good sign that they'll drop by a lot soon. I don't think milestones are a good source of motivation as it puts pressure on the team and when it's just a hobby project pressure is not what most people want. Obviously milestones are quite important for time management so I'm not quite sure what to do about it. You're probably right, it's tricky.

      I can totally understand you, i have been trying to make a game for a long time. I generally don't have that much faith in people, but I wish to be wrong, only to be right every time. I am working on my project alone, but it would be greatly beneficial just to have feedback :(. I started similar to you when i was 13, just to have people quit left and right. Now I'm 23 and i still haven't been able to find a reliable person. Some people leave in the first few messages, some just pretend to have something to work just to disappear and some just fade into oblivion without any real reason indication...

      Hi, I'm running into this somewhat. After about 7 weeks my team, especially my lead programmer, are dwindling. Doing less and less. I try to keep them motivated, and I have some success. My artist and programmer are both willing to do stuff when I'm there helping them. (Note i'm not the "teacher" or anything. I barely know code and am a lackluster artist.)
      When I'm there with them, we can get 4-5 hours of work done in about 2, progress is great and everything moves fluidly.
      But then I just sat there helping them with their job for 2 hours, each. I'm something of the project manager and "everything else" person. My jobs include: Music, pixel art, asset integration, debugging, secondary coding (in a pinch), lead design, level design, dialogue writing, etc. If it needs to be done, and it's not coding or high art, I'm the one doing it.
      I'm Pouring about 8 hours in just my own work a day. And then another 4 on some days to keep the other team members going.
      I love my team members, I really do, and the amount of work they do is great, but I wish I didn't have to babysit for them to do anything. Like they're excited and happy to work when I'm with them, but it's like the game doesn't exist unless I'm in the room. And I can feel myself starting to burn out a little. I don't know what to do.
      I doubt I'll even get a response, so I guess thank you for letting me have an anonymous space to vent. Love the video.

Measuring that in work hours for example just results in people working slower than they should and it's hard to check how much people are actually working. I'm not sure if that's the best solution but I personally would try to decide on a fair revenue share at the beginning of the project and then stick to it even if it turns out that it's not 100% fair. Being able to lose or earn additional revenue shares during the project sounds like a recipe for conflict and arguments. A tricky question.

    The game looks really nice, gonna check it out! One thing that I always ask myself when seeing something like this is "How do they survive, how do they make money?" since this is a very involved job taking a lot of time out of your day. So yeah, apart from the desire to make good art, what's the end goal here? You can't eat praise so how do they manage something like this and why do they not decide to make their lives a bit easier by selling it or accepting donations?

    • @JonasTyroller
      @JonasTyroller  4 роки тому +6

      Offering a game for free can have the advantage that more people might play your game, you don't have to deal with the struggle of setting up a n actual company which I assume doesn't exactly get easier when everybody lives in a different country, and your crew (for example all of the voice actors) won't feel cheated when they did the work for free. Making a commercial game comes with a lot of complications so I can understand the decision. I still wish they would get some money for all of the effort they put in. :P

    Ok. So I'm thinking about trying to do this. the thing is I have not completed any projects (mostly because I feel like I need other people who have skills I don't in order to complete a game). Do you think it's realistic to get people on board if you don't have any completed games to show. If you make a rough demo for your game or have a very clear and organized pitch would be still likely not be interested because of no completed projects?

  • @newsonomamashine
    @newsonomamashine 4 роки тому +1

    Amazing, the game looks very appealing will definetly give it a try. What do you think about those guys that want to be the "idea guys" like they don´t program, don´t model or animate...they want to make a project but all they want to do is do the story, design some characters and gameplay mechanics but have zero experience and literally want someone else to do the game for them either friends or strangers.

    • @JonasTyroller
      @JonasTyroller  4 роки тому +3

      I'd say stay away from them! If ideas is literally the only thing somebody can bring to the table there is no way I'd let that person into my team. :D
      Of course you need to be a bit careful as well not to rule out people too quickly as some skill sets are hard to show off. Identifying a good artist is easy. Identifying a good game designer or a good level designer or a good writer might not be and those roles can definitely be valuable for a team.

    I think alot of games would be finished and out of alpha demo phase if ppl would team up more… problem is there’s no copyrights ppl can steal ur ideas and work very easy and never get back at you…

    Great video as always. I will just leave this here in case someone is interested :
    I am looking for a graphics designer for my game project. The game idea is a mix of Smash Bros - esque fighter and movement based platformer. I am not the most experienced programmer yet, but i am learning more and more everyday (been programming for around 7 years now). At the moment i don't have enough money to pay, so if someone would be interested in this kind of game and codesign it i would be very grateful.
    For any questions please just ask :)

      Hey, I have been wanting to do something very similar sounding. I love art and design, I've been doing photoshop and illustration work professionally for 8 years now. I've been getting interested in game art design and I love fighting games. I've been thinking of looking for a programmer to possibly work with. I have no idea how to program but I know some of the basics that go into development. Do you have a Twitter account or discord account?
      I'm also really only good at 2d art, I've started learning the basics of 3d but that is going to take me a long time before I can implement that into actual use

      @@Recabilly that sounds great, i was thinking 2d too because just like you i am learning the basics of 3d programming but it will take me a long time before i can actually make a game in 3d.
      i have a really old twitter account somewhere but i don't use it at all so that is probably not a good way. discord could work, i will look up my username in a second.
      Have you animated your art before or would that be totally new to you?

      @@NinjarioPicmin I am in the United States. English is the only language I know.. My time zone is Pacific it is 1pm for me. That might be an issue unfortunately since it seems by the time I get home from work, you would be asleep. We would only be able to communicate verbally on weekends. Throughout the week we would have to rely on messages we leave for each other.

    • @NinjarioPicmin

      @@Recabilly okay, english is perfectly fine for me. currently i am working every day from around 7 am to 4 pm and before that i only prepare and drive to work after my sleep (to which i usually go at 11 pm). so on my work days i would be home from around 5-11 pm which would be 8 am - 2 pm for you, which i guess you are at work.
      for now i would say we should definitely not throw this opportunity away, but the time zones would hurt our productivity a lot (since we could only really on our free days plan something together and then there is something like reallife too :c)
