People mistake this for a track/drag car. This is a dream daily driver while having fun with a Naturally Aspirated V8 while enjoying the smooth and comfortable ride, and at the same time, it’s reliable with no issues and it’ll give you peace of mind and save you headaches
@@StratusFearX I agree. I just bought the launch edition with the suede seats. My first time buying a used car. For me, this is a virtually perfect car. It's a great daily driver and a great car for road trips, almost like a grand tourer. And like grand tourers, it has a big & powerful engine that's comfortable driving at high speeds while still being relatively fuel efficient.
The fact this car has real buttons vs touch screens makes it more luxurious and functional to my eyes. Perfect balance of tech and usable function. Touch pad is not my type tho but I can get over that.
I've always had a soft spot for a luxury car that has a v8 in it and doesn't go super track focused - it's just nice to have that v8 powerband at your disposal while also enjoying a comfortable ride
I'd say given his recent review of the LX570, an SUV that uses the same infotainment system except that it actually does NOT have touch capability, that he perhaps assumed the same here. And I have to agree with his assessment of the system, it seems clunky and annoying for a car aimed at a high market.
agreed. I like them just the way they are. they can do away with the track pad and the cd player and place a screen over there that does the climate control, improve the one on the top and we're ready to go!
I wonder if the future will see a return of more tactile controls. A lot of what I see coming out now seems flashy and cool, but in the end is neither as reliable nor as easy to use as tactile controls like shift levers, climate control knobs etc. When I'm driving and want to turn my fan speed up, I can do it without looking away from the road or taking my hand off the shifter, because it's a big knob right near my hand when it's on the shifter. I can just feel where it is. You can't say the same about almost any modern climate control, including the one in this car, because there's so little tactile feedback. You can't tell if you have your hand in the right place, and when you're driving, all of this is a real safety concern. People staring at a touch screen for 30secs to find the volume or looking down at a centre console to locate a climate slider thingy is a little concerning. So eventually, I think manufacturers will realise this and bring a lot of old school controls back. I notice Doug reviewed a couple of new cars that have moved the climate controls out of the touchscreen and back onto the centre console, and I think this trend will continue.
I’ll take a new “old” car with an NA 5.0 japanese v8 and bangin sound system and stylish looks with great build quality and reliability any day of the week.

THISSS is a car that I actually disagree with Doug on, I personally like the old school factor without all the gimmicks, I don't care about a fancy shifter or some overly complex turbo 6 cyl engine that will be unreliable in 5-7 years, this car is what a lot of people wanted and it will hold its value better then you think, It will go down as the last V8 Lexus and that is something special.

I'll never understand Doug's obsession with fully digital gauge clusters, I feel like they're tasteless, cheap and low effort. I'd take a physically moving gauge over any screen with a fancy gauge animation.

Full LCD clusters are cheaper than electromechanical clusters. That's why automakers are so quick to tout them as "the next new thing" simple LCD panel and graphics software, done. Almost zero engineering involved.
A good looking analog gauge cluster will always look better than an all digital one. It’s like a watch, if you care about timeless design, analog is ALWAYS better

Acccording to CNET - Base $57,575 (good luck finding the base at a dealer - may need to order it) - Premium $62,075 - adds 19" wheels, active dampers, Mark Levinson sound, 10.3" touchscreen (touchscreen might be a need-to-have if you hate the track pad infotainment interaction) - Launch Edition $68,475 - Special paint colors, alternative interior trim, matte black wheels that are 4 pounds lighter than the standard wheels, unique 2-tone seats. Limited to 500 units Everybody hates on the infotainment on these cars. I own a GS-F with has a slightly different input method, but is basically the same system. It's weird, sure, but you get used to it. I'm still hoping they make an LC-F with the V8 and turbos! This car makes me hope they haven't given up.
Smaller (and hopefully less ugly) wheels, less tech, and lower price ought to make the base config the honey spot. Too bad they'll all have the stupid robot tach and contrived exterior styling.

Doug, you would think after reviewing the ISF, RCF, GSF, all these years & now the IS500 that you would finally realize leaving the transmission in normal auto mode like you did is Lexus's "comfort" mode & provides the slowest shifts. Manual + Sport button is what amps up the shift times to what all the car magazines were raving about back then. Come on, even as a AMG owner I know this from driving the ISF a few times back in the days
He somehow also left out that the infotainment is now a touchscreen. It's stuff like this that makes people think he isn't actually objective in his reviews.

The q50 red sport review was way too harsh for a car that costs 20k or less used. german brands seem to get away with way more stuff on his channel, and overall I still love his videos but its just a weird thing I noticed.

I believe this is the last new Lexus with a V8. The next gen Land Cruiser / LX will likely have a twin-turbo V6 instead of a V8. So… this might hold its value quite well.

I thought the same, I honestly see no problem with this, it's a perfect mix of new & reliable technology. Regarding the gear shifter, I see no reason whatsoever to want or need an electronic switch.
@@sohamghosh4815 I have a mk7 Golf, it does have a Cd player, but it is hidden in the glovebox, I can't say I have ever used it, or wanted to. CD's are bulky and awkward, and I can play anything I want through Bluetooth so there isn't any point.
It's a shame the gauge cluster isn't real analog, and we HAVE to have a screen (one sitting on the dash in our eyeline, no less) and yet these points are considered "archaic." All tech on the inside obfuscates the driving experience, in my opinion.
I would buy this car and rip out the entire entertainment system and touchpad thing. Then buy a replacement console, get rid of the screen mount and blend in a wireless charger under the vents where the CD player is. I’d rather just have my phone play music than any of the stupid complicated infotainment systems these days. Most of them you can’t even adjust the brightness or move buttons around.
Random Guy. Doug is clearly missing the point of this car, the target audience is likely at least 50 yo +, whom don't want all the new fangled tech crap, they just want an old school V8 sporting sedan that sounds good, drives well, and is gonna be reliable (they also probably own a sizable CD collection)...ask me how I know. The "look at me, look at me" boy racer types will buy the BMW anyway, so they are not the target audience, this car is filling a niche in the market that the European manufacturers are ignoring - this car is more likely to be cross shopped against the likes of a Mustang than an M3.
Honestly think Doug dropped the ball on this car. I’ll just get my Lexus reviews elsewhere since he didn’t mention that the screen is touchscreen and all he had to do was touch the screen to find out. This car will last a long time even if it doesn’t sell hot now it will always be around compared to its competitors. Love ya Doug but you gotta give Lexus a fair shot and do research before you review it.

I think the lack of a ton of modern "features" is a virtue. Like you said, it's relatively old technology, but all of it it will likely last the lifetime of the car. It seems most cars' "features" are simply gimmicks and nothing more. I like that Lexus gives customers what they need and not too much more, especially as a brand new car. I think we'll look back on this and reflect on how good the simplicity of the tech was.

Funny thing is that it used to be integrated into the upper dash. But because the rti is so bad they made it a touch screen so they had to move it closer. I guess Doug didn't know it's also a touch screen as he never mentioned it.
It might just be me but I feel like this gauge cluster will still look classic for awhile. While the all digital clusters provide more info I think they could end up looking tacky down the road
Agreed. The lack of craftsmanship is very apparent in digital gauge displays. They look flat and cheap and the "graphics" generally are tacky and terrible.
I'm thoroughly convinced that Doug is getting kickbacks from other automakers that he doesn't get from Lexus for whatever reason. Something weird is going on for him to be so rough on like literally every Lexus he reviews...
I think it's more that he just really likes having the newest tech and the newest features. It's pretty obvious that he prefers touchscreens and digital controls like in a Tesla over traditional physical buttons. He is often really harsh on analogue or old school type cars. He hates the 370z yet I think it's one of the best value sports cars you can buy.
He just doesn’t appreciate the things that Lexus does exceptionally well. Audi, BMW, and Mercedes have options Lexus just doesn’t offer. Personally I love both of mine and probably wouldn’t buy anything else.

@@Tiz263 Actually ran into this problem couple days ago. A relatively new Dodge Challenger ran out of gas very close to the gas station. We all ran out to the middle of the road to try to help him get off of the street. And in fact a fire truck that happened to be nearby pulled in front of him turned on the lights to block traffic to keep it safe for us. But we couldn't get it to go into neutral. Powered the car off powered the car on when we would try to go to neutral the N light just blinked and it wouldn't come out of park. That has a hand gear shifter but it's just an actual joystick it doesn't really connect to anything. It's one of those Chrysler joystick style shifters. Some kind of electronic problem or the car was unhappy that it ran out of gas. But to get it off of the road we needed to put it in neutral and we couldn't.
@@remyd8767You need to take a ride to a car dealership. Unless its a car model thats been refreshed a million times over the past 10 years most new cars do not come with a CD player. I wish i had one in my 2018 camaro but it just doesnt exist.
The IS's interior has aged well. Everything is properly positioned and very convenient to use. True, they could've ditched the touch-pad in favor of a wireless charging pad... but that's kind of a non issue for me. I've driven cars with wireless chargers and never really used them. I tend to keep a factory charge cable handy for Android Auto use anyways, and the phone obviously gets charged when/if it's plugged in. Plus... this new IS has a touch screen, which Doug failed to mention. Sidenote: As lovely as this V8 sounds, it's a shame he didn't really investigate this vehicle much. He should've known that the little dial on the left side with the driver's controls (360 camera, blind spot warning, etc) is actually a volume control for the piped in sound - so you can dial the artificial sound up or down/off.
doug: cluster is old, shift lever is old me: fewer goddamn screens, and actually doing something in your car that doesn't feel like tickling it. FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC!
I personally love this car, and especially love that it is NOT an IS-F. It reminds me of the old W124 E500 in a way. Definitely a future unicorn - confidently subtle, even relatively demure in a good way. A big japanese V8 is always a good thing, and it has the ultimate "quirk" for this segment: reliability. I'm not even someone who necessarily prioritizes reliability - but in this case, it adds to the unique sense of ease that this car radiates.
Well Kevin yr wrong. As a current GSF owner and previously an IS-F owner the only thing I like is the shortness. Doug did a #very crappy job overall of his red-eyed review of this car however the car is 100% bs, sadly. I can't vomit enough about the screen and the shiney hiney rear diffuser. I'd stick with a GSF, move to a Benz/BMW or take the blue pill and go to a Tesla. Lexus has screwed us yet again.
The mercedes w124 E/500/E was the first thing I thought of too. Partly because that's exactly the kind d of car I want to purchase: 4dr sedan but with some oomf behind it.
I’d argue the E500 was at least updated for its time in terms of tech/interior quality, the IS500 is a decade behind… If they had introduced an updated Interior for the IS500, and then trickled it down to the 250/350 models after 18-24 months, I would bet the IS500 sales would be exponentially better than what they will turn out to be. For context, I previously owned a W211 E500 and currently own an ISF - would 100% sell my ISF and buy an IS500 if it weren’t for the lousy interior/outdated technology.

@@perspecttv8956 but I don't think it is possible to make new cars with the same level of reliability as this. All of these ECUs required to run everything will be a reliability nightmare. You can have your modern tech but don't expect to have a car that will be working properly in 13 years like my ISF.
It's because beyond the V8 the car is laughably old and shoehorning the V8 in their has messed up the styling balance. It LOOKS front heavy now and the rear looks like it's squatting at the same time. It's also slower than some of the 6-cylinder competition and the chassis isn't a true F product able to handle the extra power. On paper this car is a dream, but in reality it's very lackluster.

Lexus knows its target. All the old features Doug talks about are things I prefer. Cars have become too techy and this Lexus is far more prefered in my book than all the cars Doug rated higher. It all boils down to preference and I hope to someday be able to have this car in my garage before the v8 becomes extinct.
When is Doug going to realize that "new" and "modern" doesn't necessarily equate to "better"? It's funny, he lauds the instrument cluster as THE best in the industry, and almost in the same breath shames it for being 10 years old. Who cares? It's still excellent. Just like a '57 Bel Air or a '92 Accord, they're old but that doesn't make them any less awesome.
As an owner of a 1990-1993 Accord, it is awesome despite its age and that's why I love it and choose to keep it, even among my three newer cars. There's so much more to a car than "modern" and "new", there's a feeling and a sense of design that goes into it. Also why the tank 90's tank S class is considered to be the favorite among all generations.
New doesn't necessarily equate better but you know what definitely doesn't equate better - dated. That is his point. It's not like they have a retro design and analog instrument clusters or anything like that. It's just the stuff they have been using since last design refresh how many ever years ago that was. Interiors of cars age terribly as it is but if you are already using a dated design, the resale value will be impacted quite heavily.
I still use cd's all the time. Half of this review is Doug not knowing how to properly use the features available. This is one of yhe few 4 doors out now id even consider.
I wish they would do this to the GS... bring it back in F-sport form (not GSF) & stick this engine in it. Then offer the same engine in the LS 500....which would make it truly an LS 500.

I love the fact it has a cd player lol. You get the best sound quality with CDs not b/t. Too much tech is also not good. Too many issues later on down the road. It all depends what you're looking for. Great review doug!

Doug once supported toyota for keeping things simple in the Landcruiser LC200. He gave an example of him wearing two shirts instead of these fancy nano fabric shirts. And now criticizing the old school touch in this lexus. I like the simplicity and old schoolness of this lexus.

Love the turn signals. My old BMW has them and I miss them every time I get into my new one. Seems that Doug is the only one that can’t figure out the difference between a tap and a push.
Doubt it this isn’t a direct replacement even Lexus corporate has repeatedly stated that and even said a TRUE F model is specially crafted and earns the badge of F. The IS500 is a great regular car on the road but it is still just an F sport that will give the new F lineup something a little more intense and again special like all F models. SavageGeese’s video explained this perfectly you should check it out.
The entertainment unit in this new gen (2020/21 IS) is touch!! If doug touched it he would have realised this, how embarrassing for such a popular UA-camr to have missed this 🙄

That's what I'm saying bro. I swear that by now, he hasn't figured it out just because he's stubborn. Half touch for a short signal if you're changing lanes, full touch for a full signal. Half touch opposite direction to cancel. In practice, it's brilliant to use and I hate that BMW and other manufacturers ditched it.
Great overview, but he’s disregarding the biggest selling point of the car, reliability and build quality! I know he mentioned it briefly, but it really is a big selling point for many buyers. This is one of, if not the only sedan that can stand the test of time! Great review none the less.
I feel like he always misses a lot of big points. Like when he was talking about the new Ford raptor he didn’t even mention the 5 link suspensions which is literally the coolest think about it
I hate cars that automatically shift into park when I open my door. I often move with the door open while I finesse my parking job and I don’t like my car dictating what I can and can’t do.
i feel like people forget to mention the sound system. that is so important for some customers. and this one has a freaking 1600w system or something and no one cares to mention it.
I agree, people are making fun of Lexus still having a cd slot, what they don't know is that CD plus mark Levinson is better than any other Bluetooth bs in the market.
"I can't see a reason to get this over the BMW M430i" other than the fact you can get from A to B reliably after 36000 miles. I bet you can utterly thrash on this thing for 150k miles and not have an issue.
They are piping in engine sound, but they're doing it for that cool "echo" effect during upshifts. Engine sounds fine without that piping turned on (it CAN be disabled).
Honestly if i were in the market for a car in this segment, i would choose this over the german competition. Firstly you know the “old school” shifter and gauge wont fail you, i can imagine in 10 years or so when all those electric components fail how much it would cost to fix, plus the depreciation is going to be massive.
Yes. The new generation of hitech vehicles would terrify me to buy used. There’s so much potential for very pricy repair work. I’d stick to something simple as possible. This may fit the bill one day. (If it’s even feasible to drive a V8 after 2030)
The less advanced, "dated" features are part of the reason these last so long :) I hope they keep it that way. Who cares about a map on your display or a wireless charger.
You just have to tap the turn signal if you're changing lanes. They turn off by themselves. You only push the stalk all the way if you're turning 90 degrees. I love my RCF.
@@aritruths1452 exactly! I'm pretty sure the screen is touchscreen and he completely avoided that. Also in the gauge you ARE able to see your music, phone messages, and turn by turn navigation but he said it wasn't there. My 15rc has the same gauge with all that.

All the cons he lists are my pros: Naturally aspirated V8, around for more than 10 years meaning proven design, less electronic garbage to fail. Sounds like a dream car to me. Doug's critiques essentially the same as flying on a certain airline for the peanuts they offer you on the flight rather than how safe/quickly/direct the flight is. Misses the entire purpose of the car.
I’m a Lexus fan or was anyway. For today’s standards, Lexus IS so far behind with this car. It’s actually atrocious with this kind of mma system and a pure distraction. That’s why I left Lexus years ago and probably won’t come back.
This is just a parts bin car. That’s why they didn’t call it an ISF. They won’t sell well at all. I checked it out and not too impressed. Especially for the price. It’s a 40k car they want 60 plus for.
A true car people will love these "dated" tech as they are so reliable and give your that bonding that they have with the car. I have the 2017 Lexus IS200T and I still love the physical button it uses and I actually like the non fsport dashboard more. And yes, I still uses the CD/DVD slot!

A couple things: The screen is a touchscreen. You can use both the pad and the touchscreen. You can also get turn by turn and media on the instrument cluster. You just had to push the d pad on the steering wheel to the right.
This infotainment pad has been put on blast since it was released in 2014 on the Lexus IS. The previous generation with touchscreen and shortcuts was much better. Sometimes improving things doesn't make them better.

The point Doug made at 4:15 about the Prius’ existence allowing for cars like this to exist falls right in line with the donut video about the Prius, they made the same argument. Car enthusiasts need the Prius etc to exist
@@mikeicee This 100%. The elite have whatever they want regardless. The laws apply to us and not to them, and they determine what gets funding or whose scared of what manufactured crisis.
We only “need” the Prius because bureaucrats have determined how efficient our cars need to be and forced those standards on the automakers and as a result us the consumers.
I mostly disagree with this review. I own a '15 IS350 myself, and the interiors look almost exactly the same, so Doug was totally right there that a lot of the car is starting to look dated. I think Doug is missing the point of the car that this is something you can drive for the next 10 years with relatively few issues. This car is going to become incredibly important when all cars move to 4 cylinders or fully electric, and it's most likely going to stand the tests of time. Obviously the year that it's releasing, being right now, it's hard to recognize its importance. However, in the long run this car is going to be hugely important, and having it be designed by Lexus/Toyota is great to hear because you know it's good for 150k+ miles.

Love the old features. Digital shifters are stupid. Couldn’t care less about the nav system. Just pair my phone and insert my cds. Glad someone is still making a car with common sense.
Doug is really off base here. No one who buys this buys it for “modern tech”. The tech is surely sufficient for 90% of people and the people who buy it buy it for the NA V8 and Lexus reliability. I would NEVER buy a BMW 340 or even M3 over this as a daily driver as I keep my cars and put miles on them and simply will not put up with garbage BMW reliability and maintenance expenses. And you can bet your ass these are going to hold their value.
His tone about lexus performance products has been the same for a while now unfortunately. He doesn’t seem to grasp that a fair amount of people would like an “old” new car.
He says "I can't see a reason to get this over a BMW M340I.........." Except for the fact the BMW will cost you many Thousands per year to own, maintain, fix, and likely leave you sit somewhere eventually. I guarantee you'll do nothing but change oil and brakes with the Lexus, and this car will ride into the sunset past all the BMW's and Benz's in the junkyard. (2011 IS-F Driver here, and have owned 6 BMW's which I'll never go back to).
Everything about this car is just about perfect. It certainly is one of if not the last of its kind. Everyone seems to look down on Lexus for its "simplistic" tech and design but it works.....

This is why I love Lexus. Yes, it's dated, but the IS500 isn't afraid to be different. And it looks better than the competition, hands down. I'd definitely buy an IS350 though (with the handling pack). The NA V8 is great and everything, but I'd be just as happy with six cylinders, a lower price and lower running costs 👍
You can switch it off completely. Forever. Then remove the button. Blank off with a wall filler. Paint over using an old brush. Eventually it will be still better than this awful ASC.
He also kept saying that the IS interior is from 2012. The car was brought out for the 2014 model year. We get it Doug, it’s old.... but where did you get your facts?

I don’t quite think this IS500 could antagonize the new M3 if it wanted to. I mean sure it looks better than the M3 and sounds better, but the M3 has it beat on just about everything else from a performance standpoint.

I like Doug a lot but I totally disagree with the “old age” I think all of the older stuff that this car has is a benefit. The physical shift lever is easier to use and more tactile, the gage cluster can show plenty of information but isn’t overdone and distracting. The CD player is nice you get better quality music out of a physical media like cd’s. Both of my parents drive Lexus’s and honestly the infotainment isn’t as hard to use as people say it works fine. It’s not mind blowing or anything but it’s not a life ruiner. Also Lexus is usually behind the competition because they take their time with new tech to make it reliable as we expect from Lexus. This is a car you can buy without a worry that in 10 years it’s going to need some crazy super expensive service like the germans. I think Lexus did this car well.

They went to BMW for BMW's specialty like speed and handling and to produce a straight-six that wasn't in Toyota's wheelhouse. And if you cannot see why customers would actually WANT a Lexus over a BMW, I'm confident in saying you can't actually afford either a Lexus, BMW or Mercedes. (I'm well aware most people can get a loan, I'm talking about actually AFFORDING a car with or without a loan, while still having 6-8 figures in your bank account)

most people that buy/lease new luxury cars don't keep them for more than 3-6 years, so long term reliability doesn't really matter. All cars depreciate.

I think his points are valid for most buyers. However this car is targeting a specific buyer, and it does that really well. For the average buyer this car is technically uncompetitive. And that's okay.

It's a great daily driver and a great car for road trips, almost like a grand tourer. And like grand tourers, it has a big & powerful engine that's comfortable driving at high speeds while still being relatively fuel efficient.

The fact this car has real buttons vs touch screens makes it more luxurious and functional to my eyes. Perfect balance of tech and usable function. Touch pad is not my type tho but I can get over that.

I'd say given his recent review of the LX570, an SUV that uses the same infotainment system except that it actually does NOT have touch capability, that he perhaps assumed the same here. And I have to agree with his assessment of the system, it seems clunky and annoying for a car aimed at a high market.

I like that the shift lever is an actual lever, not buttons or a dial and that the gauge cluster isn’t just a screen.
As far as I'm concerned, Toyota keeps using the shift lever that way because it's more reliable in the long term compared to the other shifters...

As a is350 f-sport owner, the gauge cluster is a screen.
I wonder if the future will see a return of more tactile controls. A lot of what I see coming out now seems flashy and cool, but in the end is neither as reliable nor as easy to use as tactile controls like shift levers, climate control knobs etc.
When I'm driving and want to turn my fan speed up, I can do it without looking away from the road or taking my hand off the shifter, because it's a big knob right near my hand when it's on the shifter. I can just feel where it is. You can't say the same about almost any modern climate control, including the one in this car, because there's so little tactile feedback. You can't tell if you have your hand in the right place, and when you're driving, all of this is a real safety concern. People staring at a touch screen for 30secs to find the volume or looking down at a centre console to locate a climate slider thingy is a little concerning.
So eventually, I think manufacturers will realise this and bring a lot of old school controls back. I notice Doug reviewed a couple of new cars that have moved the climate controls out of the touchscreen and back onto the centre console, and I think this trend will continue.
I’ll take a new “old” car with an NA 5.0 japanese v8 and bangin sound system and stylish looks with great build quality and reliability any day of the week.

THISSS is a car that I actually disagree with Doug on, I personally like the old school factor without all the gimmicks, I don't care about a fancy shifter or some overly complex turbo 6 cyl engine that will be unreliable in 5-7 years, this car is what a lot of people wanted and it will hold its value better then you think, It will go down as the last V8 Lexus and that is something special.

Full LCD clusters are cheaper than electromechanical clusters. That's why automakers are so quick to tout them as "the next new thing" simple LCD panel and graphics software, done. Almost zero engineering involved.

Everybody hates on the infotainment on these cars. I own a GS-F with has a slightly different input method, but is basically the same system. It's weird, sure, but you get used to it.
I'm still hoping they make an LC-F with the V8 and turbos! This car makes me hope they haven't given up.
Smaller (and hopefully less ugly) wheels, less tech, and lower price ought to make the base config the honey spot. Too bad they'll all have the stupid robot tach and contrived exterior styling.

Doug, you would think after reviewing the ISF, RCF, GSF, all these years & now the IS500 that you would finally realize leaving the transmission in normal auto mode like you did is Lexus's "comfort" mode & provides the slowest shifts. Manual + Sport button is what amps up the shift times to what all the car magazines were raving about back then. Come on, even as a AMG owner I know this from driving the ISF a few times back in the days

I would buy this car and rip out the entire entertainment system and touchpad thing. Then buy a replacement console, get rid of the screen mount and blend in a wireless charger under the vents where the CD player is. I’d rather just have my phone play music than any of the stupid complicated infotainment systems these days. Most of them you can’t even adjust the brightness or move buttons around.

Doug is clearly missing the point of this car, the target audience is likely at least 50 yo +, whom don't want all the new fangled tech crap, they just want an old school V8 sporting sedan that sounds good, drives well, and is gonna be reliable (they also probably own a sizable CD collection)...ask me how I know. The "look at me, look at me" boy racer types will buy the BMW anyway, so they are not the target audience, this car is filling a niche in the market that the European manufacturers are ignoring - this car is more likely to be cross shopped against the likes of a Mustang than an M3.
Honestly think Doug dropped the ball on this car. I’ll just get my Lexus reviews elsewhere since he didn’t mention that the screen is touchscreen and all he had to do was touch the screen to find out. This car will last a long time even if it doesn’t sell hot now it will always be around compared to its competitors. Love ya Doug but you gotta give Lexus a fair shot and do research before you review it.

I think the lack of a ton of modern "features" is a virtue. Like you said, it's relatively old technology, but all of it it will likely last the lifetime of the car. It seems most cars' "features" are simply gimmicks and nothing more. I like that Lexus gives customers what they need and not too much more, especially as a brand new car. I think we'll look back on this and reflect on how good the simplicity of the tech was.

I think it's more that he just really likes having the newest tech and the newest features. It's pretty obvious that he prefers touchscreens and digital controls like in a Tesla over traditional physical buttons. He is often really harsh on analogue or old school type cars. He hates the 370z yet I think it's one of the best value sports cars you can buy.

He just doesn’t appreciate the things that Lexus does exceptionally well. Audi, BMW, and Mercedes have options Lexus just doesn’t offer. Personally I love both of mine and probably wouldn’t buy anything else.

Actually ran into this problem couple days ago. A relatively new Dodge Challenger ran out of gas very close to the gas station. We all ran out to the middle of the road to try to help him get off of the street. And in fact a fire truck that happened to be nearby pulled in front of him turned on the lights to block traffic to keep it safe for us. But we couldn't get it to go into neutral. Powered the car off powered the car on when we would try to go to neutral the N light just blinked and it wouldn't come out of park. That has a hand gear shifter but it's just an actual joystick it doesn't really connect to anything. It's one of those Chrysler joystick style shifters. Some kind of electronic problem or the car was unhappy that it ran out of gas. But to get it off of the road we needed to put it in neutral and we couldn't.

The IS's interior has aged well. Everything is properly positioned and very convenient to use. True, they could've ditched the touch-pad in favor of a wireless charging pad... but that's kind of a non issue for me. I've driven cars with wireless chargers and never really used them. I tend to keep a factory charge cable handy for Android Auto use anyways, and the phone obviously gets charged when/if it's plugged in. Plus... this new IS has a touch screen, which Doug failed to mention.
Sidenote: As lovely as this V8 sounds, it's a shame he didn't really investigate this vehicle much. He should've known that the little dial on the left side with the driver's controls (360 camera, blind spot warning, etc) is actually a volume control for the piped in sound - so you can dial the artificial sound up or down/off.
Turns out the infotainment screen is touchscreen also. Much needed feature for a throwback design.

I personally love this car, and especially love that it is NOT an IS-F. It reminds me of the old W124 E500 in a way. Definitely a future unicorn - confidently subtle, even relatively demure in a good way. A big japanese V8 is always a good thing, and it has the ultimate "quirk" for this segment: reliability. I'm not even someone who necessarily prioritizes reliability - but in this case, it adds to the unique sense of ease that this car radiates.
Well Kevin yr wrong. As a current GSF owner and previously an IS-F owner the only thing I like is the shortness. Doug did a #very crappy job overall of his red-eyed review of this car however the car is 100% bs, sadly. I can't vomit enough about the screen and the shiney hiney rear diffuser. I'd stick with a GSF, move to a Benz/BMW or take the blue pill and go to a Tesla. Lexus has screwed us yet again.
The mercedes w124 E/500/E was the first thing I thought of too. Partly because that's exactly the kind d of car I want to purchase: 4dr sedan but with some oomf behind it.

If they had introduced an updated Interior for the IS500, and then trickled it down to the 250/350 models after 18-24 months, I would bet the IS500 sales would be exponentially better than what they will turn out to be.
For context, I previously owned a W211 E500 and currently own an ISF - would 100% sell my ISF and buy an IS500 if it weren’t for the lousy interior/outdated technology.

It's because beyond the V8 the car is laughably old and shoehorning the V8 in their has messed up the styling balance. It LOOKS front heavy now and the rear looks like it's squatting at the same time. It's also slower than some of the 6-cylinder competition and the chassis isn't a true F product able to handle the extra power. On paper this car is a dream, but in reality it's very lackluster.

Lexus knows its target. All the old features Doug talks about are things I prefer. Cars have become too techy and this Lexus is far more prefered in my book than all the cars Doug rated higher. It all boils down to preference and I hope to someday be able to have this car in my garage before the v8 becomes extinct.

As an owner of a 1990-1993 Accord, it is awesome despite its age and that's why I love it and choose to keep it, even among my three newer cars. There's so much more to a car than "modern" and "new", there's a feeling and a sense of design that goes into it. Also why the tank 90's tank S class is considered to be the favorite among all generations.

New doesn't necessarily equate better but you know what definitely doesn't equate better - dated. That is his point. It's not like they have a retro design and analog instrument clusters or anything like that. It's just the stuff they have been using since last design refresh how many ever years ago that was. Interiors of cars age terribly as it is but if you are already using a dated design, the resale value will be impacted quite heavily.

I love the fact it has a cd player lol. You get the best sound quality with CDs not b/t. Too much tech is also not good. Too many issues later on down the road. It all depends what you're looking for. Great review doug!

Doubt it this isn’t a direct replacement even Lexus corporate has repeatedly stated that and even said a TRUE F model is specially crafted and earns the badge of F. The IS500 is a great regular car on the road but it is still just an F sport that will give the new F lineup something a little more intense and again special like all F models. SavageGeese’s video explained this perfectly you should check it out.
The entertainment unit in this new gen (2020/21 IS) is touch!! If doug touched it he would have realised this, how embarrassing for such a popular UA-camr to have missed this 🙄

That's what I'm saying bro. I swear that by now, he hasn't figured it out just because he's stubborn. Half touch for a short signal if you're changing lanes, full touch for a full signal. Half touch opposite direction to cancel. In practice, it's brilliant to use and I hate that BMW and other manufacturers ditched it.
Great overview, but he’s disregarding the biggest selling point of the car, reliability and build quality! I know he mentioned it briefly, but it really is a big selling point for many buyers. This is one of, if not the only sedan that can stand the test of time! Great review none the less.

They are piping in engine sound, but they're doing it for that cool "echo" effect during upshifts. Engine sounds fine without that piping turned on (it CAN be disabled).
Honestly if i were in the market for a car in this segment, i would choose this over the german competition. Firstly you know the “old school” shifter and gauge wont fail you, i can imagine in 10 years or so when all those electric components fail how much it would cost to fix, plus the depreciation is going to be massive.
Yes. The new generation of hitech vehicles would terrify me to buy used. There’s so much potential for very pricy repair work. I’d stick to something simple as possible. This may fit the bill one day. (If it’s even feasible to drive a V8 after 2030)
The less advanced, "dated" features are part of the reason these last so long :) I hope they keep it that way. Who cares about a map on your display or a wireless charger.

You just have to tap the turn signal if you're changing lanes. They turn off by themselves. You only push the stalk all the way if you're turning 90 degrees. I love my RCF.

All the cons he lists are my pros: Naturally aspirated V8, around for more than 10 years meaning proven design, less electronic garbage to fail. Sounds like a dream car to me.
Doug's critiques essentially the same as flying on a certain airline for the peanuts they offer you on the flight rather than how safe/quickly/direct the flight is. Misses the entire purpose of the car.

I’m a Lexus fan or was anyway. For today’s standards, Lexus IS so far behind with this car. It’s actually atrocious with this kind of mma system and a pure distraction. That’s why I left Lexus years ago and probably won’t come back.
This is just a parts bin car. That’s why they didn’t call it an ISF. They won’t sell well at all. I checked it out and not too impressed. Especially for the price. It’s a 40k car they want 60 plus for.
A true car people will love these "dated" tech as they are so reliable and give your that bonding that they have with the car. I have the 2017 Lexus IS200T and I still love the physical button it uses and I actually like the non fsport dashboard more.
And yes, I still uses the CD/DVD slot!

A couple things: The screen is a touchscreen. You can use both the pad and the touchscreen. You can also get turn by turn and media on the instrument cluster. You just had to push the d pad on the steering wheel to the right.
It's just typical Doug, intensely biased against Toyota/Lexus.
This infotainment pad has been put on blast since it was released in 2014 on the Lexus IS. The previous generation with touchscreen and shortcuts was much better. Sometimes improving things doesn't make them better.

I mostly disagree with this review. I own a '15 IS350 myself, and the interiors look almost exactly the same, so Doug was totally right there that a lot of the car is starting to look dated. I think Doug is missing the point of the car that this is something you can drive for the next 10 years with relatively few issues. This car is going to become incredibly important when all cars move to 4 cylinders or fully electric, and it's most likely going to stand the tests of time.
Obviously the year that it's releasing, being right now, it's hard to recognize its importance. However, in the long run this car is going to be hugely important, and having it be designed by Lexus/Toyota is great to hear because you know it's good for 150k+ miles.

Doug is really off base here. No one who buys this buys it for “modern tech”. The tech is surely sufficient for 90% of people and the people who buy it buy it for the NA V8 and Lexus reliability. I would NEVER buy a BMW 340 or even M3 over this as a daily driver as I keep my cars and put miles on them and simply will not put up with garbage BMW reliability and maintenance expenses. And you can bet your ass these are going to hold their value.

His tone about lexus performance products has been the same for a while now unfortunately. He doesn’t seem to grasp that a fair amount of people would like an “old” new car.
He says "I can't see a reason to get this over a BMW M340I.........." Except for the fact the BMW will cost you many Thousands per year to own, maintain, fix, and likely leave you sit somewhere eventually. I guarantee you'll do nothing but change oil and brakes with the Lexus, and this car will ride into the sunset past all the BMW's and Benz's in the junkyard. (2011 IS-F Driver here, and have owned 6 BMW's which I'll never go back to).
Everything about this car is just about perfect. It certainly is one of if not the last of its kind. Everyone seems to look down on Lexus for its "simplistic" tech and design but it works.....

This is why I love Lexus. Yes, it's dated, but the IS500 isn't afraid to be different. And it looks better than the competition, hands down.
I'd definitely buy an IS350 though (with the handling pack). The NA V8 is great and everything, but I'd be just as happy with six cylinders, a lower price and lower running costs 👍

C'mon, Doug. I think we all know it's an "F Sport" instead of a true "F" because Lexus didn't want to build something that would be received as a true M3 competitor and antagonize the partner company that builds the Supra. That said, yes I want one.
@@jamestorrens645 NO they don't... in Japan many models "Lexus" models are badged Toyota and even Lexus door vins have Toyota holograms. They just sell them at different dealerships etc... its 100% pure branding. The 2022 Lexus RX is built on a 2002 Toyota camry chassis etc...
I don’t quite think this IS500 could antagonize the new M3 if it wanted to. I mean sure it looks better than the M3 and sounds better, but the M3 has it beat on just about everything else from a performance standpoint.

I like Doug a lot but I totally disagree with the “old age” I think all of the older stuff that this car has is a benefit. The physical shift lever is easier to use and more tactile, the gage cluster can show plenty of information but isn’t overdone and distracting. The CD player is nice you get better quality music out of a physical media like cd’s. Both of my parents drive Lexus’s and honestly the infotainment isn’t as hard to use as people say it works fine. It’s not mind blowing or anything but it’s not a life ruiner. Also Lexus is usually behind the competition because they take their time with new tech to make it reliable as we expect from Lexus. This is a car you can buy without a worry that in 10 years it’s going to need some crazy super expensive service like the germans. I think Lexus did this car well.

@@hirofujiwara7333 Toyota didn't go to BMW on the basis of increasing efficiency in production. Toyota didn't collab with BMW for QC. Toyota didn't collab with BMW for reliability. They went to BMW for BMW's specialty like speed and handling and to produce a straight-six that wasn't in Toyota's wheelhouse.
And if you cannot see why customers would actually WANT a Lexus over a BMW, I'm confident in saying you can't actually afford either a Lexus, BMW or Mercedes.
(I'm well aware most people can get a loan, I'm talking about actually AFFORDING a car with or without a loan, while still having 6-8 figures in your bank account)

How well a car holds its value should factor into anybody’s mind when buying an expensive vehicle. The fact that this will be worth more money in 5-10 years than an m3 even tho it’s msrp is $13k less means something to most people.
most people that buy/lease new luxury cars don't keep them for more than 3-6 years, so long term reliability doesn't really matter. All cars depreciate.
@@kristians2704 This car competes with the Q50rs for one. Look at their value after 3 years compared to an RCF/GSF. The biggest reason people buy Toyota/Lexus is for resale value. To avoid mentioning that will clearly skew the results.

I think his points are valid for most buyers. However this car is targeting a specific buyer, and it does that really well.
For the average buyer this car is technically uncompetitive. And that's okay.
Doubt it most guys would rather buy a charger hellcat or some shit. People will buy this no doubt, but nothing about this really stands out as "special".
