- Went out today to hunt for some blacktail deer but did not expect much because it is still early in the season. To our surprise, a buck was spotted in the morning of the hunt and he was a giant. The only deer that we managed to glass up that day was the only one we made a game plan on, and it came out successful. This buck is truly a once in a lifetime buck.

I hunted blacktail in the Oregon Wilderness for over 30 years on the west side of Interstate 5, and that looks like EVERY OTHER good blacktail buck I have encountered and NOTHING about screams benchleg or mule deer. It is simply a beautiful blacktail. Congrats on a good one!

Thanks. We always say to ourselves to do these things when we are young and able to do it rather than later when our body can't handle no more. That's why we push ourselves for these hunts.

Blacktails and blacktail hunting dont get near the love they deserve. I live and hunt blacktails in Far-Nor-Cal, way up around the Oregon border. Northern California grows some world class blacktails, absolute monsters. I also hunt mule deer and elk in Colorado. I tell ya what, i look forward to blacktail season more than mule deer and elk. Ive had the great fortune to harvest a few 'trophy' blacktail bucks. In my opinion blacktail hunting is second to none.
Totally agree that blacktails are underrated. We rather spend time chasing blacktails during the season, and if we want to chase mule deer we would be heading to Montana instead.

Driving that many hours with meat and no ice , be carefulnot to lay meat overtop of exhaust system running under floorboards. Getting meat on ice asap is very important.

You can't shoot a big blacktail without the bench leg or part mule deer comments. Pretty frustrating when you work your butt off only to have jealous couch hunters try to diminish your success.
Why would someone stating the differences in animals diminish a great hunt that lead to a great shot on a great buck? Only one bitching is you , nobody said anything negative here but you. Your parents failed
People who leave the state because they’re unsuccessful in their residential one, so they pay money to hunt on private ranches to brag as if they do all the work to find a big one lol

Nice job guys. Coastal blacktail are a subspecies of the mule deer. They share the same genetics. Great deer and you guys are very patient. I probably would've shot it laying down.
Wrong.. Mule deer are a subspecies of Blacktail deer. Whitetails are the oldest species.. then they became Blacktails .. then Mulies came from Blacktails.. and possibly Blacktail/Whitetail crossing
I’ve taken a lot of blacktail after hunting and eating whitetail I don’t think I’ll ever go back to blacktail

Since you can’t shoot lead bullets in California, (143 grain ELD-X) I’m assuming these guys were hunting in Oregon. California has to be lead free.

That's totally a mule or mule cross definitely not a blacktail look at all the pine trees around

Agree its probably a bench leg. An area where they cross. Very nice buck! I hunt a similar area, and the cross breeds can be huge! Great job!
