Wow Jory. Educational video at its best.
I have an Eterna from 2 years ago
I bought a modern Eterna Royal Kon Tiki 2 Time Zones about 6 months ago and it has been a great watch wearing it to work and out and about and it has 5 ball bearings and ball bearings in the actual crown! Epic watch worth every penny!
Just to be pedantic, 'one ball bearing" might mean 'one ball bearing containing 5 steel balls' people often refer to steel balls as ball bearings.
I am the proud owner of the Eterna
Advantic GMT and I love it. This watch is back to front high quality.
And with the Eterna sphero drive in-house movement so smooth
Bullseye accurate.
And it's a real looker I get a lot of people commenting on my watch.
I have quite a few vintage models also from Eterna it is a brand I am very happy to own.
Thank you for your video and bringing to light the Eterna brand.
Cheers!
The Kontiki story is pretty cool, when Thor Heyerdahl made his cross-ocean rafting voyage, he wore an Eterna watch. Says something about the quality of their pieces back in the 40’s, for sure. I really want to see one up close too!
I have no experience with any modern Eternas, but I do have one that’s a testament to what they built back in the day.
My grandfather bought it in 1962 after getting fed up with watches that wouldn’t keep decent time. He wore it for decades beating it to death on a farm. Working on his tractor. Building two houses. Working on cars. You name it, he did it with that watch on his wrist. The watch took a hit one day under the tractor so hard, it dented the steel case.
He had it serviced about ten years ago before giving it to me- the first time it had ever been serviced. The watch maker commented that it was one of the finest pieces he had ever serviced, and that it was still perfect.
My grandfather passed in ‘17, but I still wear his watch on holidays and such. Still keeps great time after 60 years, and it’s a pleasure to wear, dent and all.
Honest, straightforward, precise & clear. I like this vid. Actually I have three Eterna's, a Heavy Duty KonTiki divers late 70's/early 1980 watch, Also a Lovely Quartz from 90's and a Special Edition made Presentation watch. What I take away from this vid- is I can probably get spare parts. Many Thanks.
Someone from Montreal says “FRERR” is the pronunciation, but not a bad attempt. My dear departed mom had an Eterna watch, which I inherited. My wife still wears it. It was bought at BIRK’S in Montreal close to 60 years ago, but when I tried to get it referenced, their records didn’t go back that far. It is fashioned as a “TANK” model, so still a good looking piece. If you’d like to peruse it or do a vid on it, I’d be honoured to send it.
he wouldn't send it back
Have a KonTiki chronograph with a 7750 inside. Exceptional finish for the price tag. Bracelet is outstanding. Great piece from a brand with heritage.
So glad to see Eterna featured! One of my first vintage watches I bought was a cushion cased Eternamatic "Sahida", still my absolute favourite! Thank you for another wonderful video Jory!
U bring back the nostalgia with flair man, my dad spoke of them and he owned a Fortis, so he knew their value, thanks for the memories
Jory, thanks for the excellent info and history! I enjoy owning and wearing a 1958 Eterna Matic and a 1967 Eterna Matic 1000. I just bought my son a 1969 EM 1000.
Eterna made some of the most iconic watches of our time. Their quality is also amazing.
I have one and it is fantastic. Did an unboxing of it on my channel. Full review coming soon. It is the Eterna Kontiki Four Hands Eternamatic. I love Eterna. 🤘🏻
Nice review! Thanks for bringing some much deserved attention to a wonderful historic watchmaker. Eterna is one of my favorite brands. I own 6 modern Eternas and they’re all great watches. I have two with the caliber 39, one with the caliber 3501 (another in-house caliber), the Super KonTiki with the ETA you showed, and two other KonTikis with Sellita movements. All are fantastic and have very nice finishing. Cheers! Jon
I just had a gift, ETERNA-MATIC KonTiki 1958 CHRONOMETER Limited Edition model ref. 1573.47
The movement has the five balls baring so it relates to the history of the brand and its logo.
I knew ETA movements and how popular they are, but I never thought about the origins of them, so happy to get a watch with a great story behind it.
I had one Avant guarde big date. Nice piece. Got rid of it because it was too big for me and hands looked a bit cheap (just like bent tin). Very, very accurate tho. Glad to see relevance is getting through. Not just marketing. Kudos
I own a 41mm pvd Adventic with a Sellita sw200. Bought it a couple of months ago, it's a watch I've wanted in my collection for a while. I am very pleased with it. I imagine I will pick up another Eterna before too long, they are fantastic. Even with Sellita's. It is good to see established undervalued brands being given a bit of attention.
Bought a 1948 Legacy (Blue Dial) with the Sellita SW-300 caliber two years ago. Stunning looks, quality and precision. It looses +/- 2 SPD which is outstanding, better than an Oris, Longines, Mido, Tissot and Rado I also own. Can´t wait to get my hand on one with in house ETERNA movement, but still I think the Sellita is wayyyyy underrated. ETERNA shall rise from the ashes!!!!
Neat to hear the history. I just found a Centenaire in my basement. Used to be my Grandfather's I believe. Still works, date and all. It's in great shape. I just ordered a strap for it as the one on it is too big for me. Tonight I cleaned it up a bit, just the outside and tmrw when that strap comes in I'll have a new watch :) and it used to be my Grandfather's which is even cooler.
I have a vintage Eternamatic from 1967 which was sold by Bayer in Zurich . They were even able to tell me it was sold to a Canadian gentleman!!
I have a new Eterna Airforce which was about $500 and has an ETA so sort of in-house , anyway love them both great value classic swiss watch without all the hype which increases the value exponentially.
Whaaaat, This was SOOO DANG EDUCATIONAL! I have learned so much. Thank you so mcuh for this! You have some of my favourite watch content, J. Thank youfor what you are doing!
Those five dots = Eterna of course 💪
ETA is nothing shy of AMAZING 👏 😃 BRAVO
Jory - great topic. Eterna is a classic undervalued brand in the vintage space and really now a "name" purchased by a large private equity firm to sell watches with primarily general movements like the Sellita. I have a classic KonTiki 20 from the 1960s with the Eterna 1489k in-house movement (using the five ball bearings) on an original Gay Freres beads of rice bracelet that is wonderful. I also have one of the modern KonTiki Divers running the Sellita SW200-1 on the black rubber strap with folding diver's clasp. The modern watch is really well made and for a market price of $800 a pretty solid deal for a Swiss movement watch. But the vintage KonTiki 20 for a few hundred dollars more is a much better value - gorgeous watch.
Thanks for that history lesson...excellent!!!👍👍👍👍👍 I like the 1948 for him on the left!
I have a Eterna Kontiki diver 44mm, compered to my earlyer watches like Omega Speedmaster, Tudor, Stowa, Seiko, Dubey&Schaldenbrand and several of Oris divers i am stund by the quality, finish and value for money that Eterna offers.
I bought a new Eterna 1948 in solid 18k gold about 20 years ago. I still have it now and it was running perfectly with its chronometer movement in the absence of a service for almost all that time (I don’t advise you do that!). It has a crocodile strap, gold twin trigger release clasp and sapphire display back which shows the beautiful movement. They probably made this version to celebrate their contribution to movement making in that year with the ball-bearings. It is a beautiful piece and I will never sell it. As an aside, and to give an example of how crazy things have become with pricing in the last 5-10 years, this watch had a higher retail when I bought it than the new Rolex Sea Dweller I ordered around the same period!
As a French I must say I love when you try to pronounce French words, no kidding keep it up !
Nice video.
I inherited an eterna concept 80 7 day from my dad and besides needing service, probably when it gets it, it will go back to the drawer. Couldn't risk it getting damaged
Wouldn’t have ETA without them!
Hi Jory,
Thank you for this video on the legendary Eterna. I am planning to get the Eterna avant-garde as my next watch as I don’t have dress watches. I am more of an underdog/under-appreciated supporter hence Eterna deserved my attention. Their history is second to none but sad of the way they are now.
Kind Regards
Renoy
I did get my first Eterna. The two tone Eternity Legacy dress watch on a bracelet. Absolutely smitten. The finish on it is so good and I purchased it brand new at such a good price. So elegant & refined. Proud
Yep! First watch was a vintage Eterna. They are great pieces!
The vintage Eternas are the best and possibly the best automatic watches ever. I have an Eterna Centenaire and Eterna Kontiki diver, both from the 1960's.
I have a 60’s KonTiki Super diver. They are to my eye very attractive watches and actually bring good money in the vintage market.
Very informative! Wearing my 1952 white dial KonTiki with the gold medallion on the back this month... so classy.. really a stunning watch! BTW, I believe ETA is supposed to be pronounced like the Greek letter "Eta", as opposed to an acronym "e-t-a". Cheers
Love Eterna. Very nice timepieces with a ton of horological history. I may be mistaken but I believe they developed the automatic winding mechanism so prevalent in today's automatic watches. I have a vintage 60s Eternamatic 1000 from my father. Beautifully made timepiece.
Really glad you have made this Sir . Wonderful vintage brand .
Just a comment to help the algorithm and support a good man.
I own one of their super kontiki fly back chronographs, which has a manufacture movement. It is a well finished watch for the money, the column wheel chronograph & fly back feature operates very nicely, and the action compares well to other high quality chronographs. Super fun watch. The mesh bracelet is excellent. I had to send mine back for service though.(under warranty) It happens, and as long as I don’t have any issues with the movement over the next couple years, it feels like a steal at the price I paid.
i have soft spot for Eterna watches..KonTiki is legendary....✌🏻🙏🏻
I have an Eterna Kontiki Four Hands (not the black PVD version shown in the video). Great quality, fantastic design with the pointer date, and maybe the best bracelet and clasp I have seen on Swiss watches of this price range. The Sellita movement is absolutely OK, even if I know it should be an ETA. But that's not a deal breaker for me.
TK (TJ) Maxx had nice ss dress watches in last year, no Kon Tiki models but at least 3 styles of dress. Massive 60% discount. Had a look at one and it was impressive. The Kon Tiki is a cool watch in all its forms, from what I've seen, good to see you cover the brand. Cherrs man 👍🏻🏴😎
Maybe its the Bombay Gin talking, but I loved this video! Learned about a brand I never thought about leading to learning about ETA. Great content - keep it up!
Thank you, boss! (Ps. That’s my dad’s drink- Bombay Sapphire!)
Some vintage brands deserve more credit. Last year, I worked on an old Certina day-date. I hoped, this dream never came to an end.... :-P
Amen to this!
Great! Looking forward to the Lemania episode 👍
The eterna triple date chronograph is my favorite watch, EVER!! currently saving for it
Jory, awesome content as always. I am a proud owner of the Kon Tiki Bronze. It’s an amazing watch. Eterna needs to invest more in their marketing. With the right strategy and a big budget Eterna could give Omega real competition.
Excellent episode, I enjoy this format the most. I did my research on Eterna previous to this vid because I have a vintage EternaMatic Kontiki 20 that I'm trying to restore, but here in Honduras I can't, I think I'll contact the place you restore the watches at your store. Keep this series in motion, the community will be thankful. Now a vid on vintage Omega.
Awesome video Jody. I had heard of Eterna and new a little bit of their history but I learned a whole lot today with this video.
Good video! Believe most Sellita movements are a basically copies of ETA movements, so an Eterna with Sellita is at least distantly related. Would love to hear more about high quality, jeweled quartz movements from Switzerland and Japan... especially the ones that are fully jeweled and overhaulable, i.e., Seiko 7A28, and 7548 movements.
My first automatic, vintage fine Swiss watch was a 1955 Eternamatic that I bought 20+ years ago. I still have it and I still wear it.
That watch kicked off my watch appreciation and intentional collecting as opposed to buying various watches that coalesced in the bottom of a drawer.
Eterna is much more popular in Europe and the Mediterranean countries they rightfully should have a slot up there with Omega and Rolex. Talk about a value proposition!
Great video of horological history. One watch brand comes to mind
Bovet Fleurier that produces these pocket watches for the wrist. RGM is close by but I do wishes more people would appreciate these magical marvels more. There are several other US watch companies but I don't believe that they produce their own movements like ETA Valjoux Valgrange soprod. And the like.
I was conflicted about which left-field retro diver to get. I narrowed it down to the Rado Captain Cook and the Eterna Kontiki. Eventually I opted for the Kontiki due to the Thor Heyerdahl connection. I love it.
I have a gold Eterna matic Centanaire with a date complication and I love it. A friend gave it to me.
I just purchased a Le Jour chrono watch and really love it. Not much on the reviews of Le Jour. since it’s one of those brands that is trying to make a comeback it would be a good review.
Thanks for another step on my learning journey Jory. Entertaining and informative as usual.
Thanks for promoting Eterna. They have made some very nice watches. The Wittnauer brand is more c0okmplex than your discussion suggests. Wittnauer was a distributor for top Swiss makers starting in the late 19th century. The firm was started Eugene Roberts who imported Louis Audemars Agassiz and Logines. He married Martha Wittnauer. After Roberts dies she brought in her brother Albert Wittnauer who expanded the operation. They never made watxhes but imported very fine watches often under their own name or private label. They distributed and repaired Longines, Agassiz Audemars Piguet, and Touchon. Ultimately Longines bought them to control US distribution and used the name for lower price watches.
Henry Fried wrote a very good book about Albert Wittnauer.
Man, Greetings from Brazil!!! I have a Eterna Matic from late 60's realy 70' from my father. Love this watch. 19mm lugs o puted a Italian leather strap. Well, Nice video
Love it. Learned something new and even made me check out ebay afterwards.
Watch Chris has a few modern Eternas and is a big fan of the brand.
I own an etrena dress watch. It is out of this world
the best watch I’ve ever owned
and I have on a lot of watches
I was surprised you didn't talk about Eterna being acquired by CityChamp Watch and Jewelry Group. LTD (June 29, 2011)., a Hong Kong-based, Chinese consortium (nee Haidan Group) that owns Eterna, Corum, Rotary, Ernest Borel, J&T Windmills, Dreyfuss & Co,, as well as the Chinese mega brands, Ebohr and Rossini. The Porsche Design license was included as part of the Eterna purchase.
Rossini and Ebohr have around a 50% share of the Chinese domestic watch market. CityChamp also owns a controlling interest in Dixmont (Five Goat Guangzhou Watch Factory), one of the largest producers of Chinese mechanical watch movements, and OEM manufacturer of the Guangzhou and Dixmont watch brands.
So far, CityChamp seems content to keep Eterna and Corum, luxury Swiss manufacturers. Rotary's product line now has a significant, Chinese made segment.
thank you, brother
Good episode, thanks mate 👍🏻👍🏻
I am sure, it is Grenchen, not Gretchen. But thanks for the video. Just bought a 1965 Eternamatic.
Cool video. They really are a great brand with an interesting history.
Eterna is one of my favorite brands and I have been lucky enough to own a few of them over the years. I feel like their releases over the last 10-15 years have all been a case size too big. Their 44mm watches should be 42mm and the 42mm should be 40mm. I recently bought one of the Kontiki Date models and had to send it to the service center where it was stolen. They can't replace it so they are sending me one of the bronze Kontiki Divers to replace it.
Love these educational videos. Well done.
Jory ,that was amazing work.👍💪
I own a eternamatic 3000 18 krt gold, slim, automatic,nice dress watch.
Great video. The late great Chef Carl Ruiz loved Eterna watches
Nice , thanks for the history 👍
Indeed, very educational. Great brand. Congratulations for this video.
I own porsce design by eterna. Extremely beautiful piece
Got a great price on an ETERNA Granges on the grey market. Absolutely beautiful watch -- under 10mm with a panorama date. Unfortunately, it has never run well for me; it tends to stop, even after being serviced.
LAPO'S Stardust memories: golden Eterna with golden MAGLIA MILANO (Milanese bracelet) was a SUPERPOSH option in Milan, Bologna, Florence and Rome right until the '90, where sadly the Maison went out of radars.
Wow, I had no idea... Thanks for video, very interesting!
Thanks for the video.
Could you please explain the markers on the diver's bezel?
Hi Jory. I was looking at the Eterna Adventic GMT Automatic (with the anthracite dial) and almost made the plunge 2 years ago. Looks amazing and I reckon the movement is in-house (I might be wrong). Anyway, I read in some watch forum that this particular movement has issues and that dissuaded me from making my move on this beauty. Reliability aside, I really like the watch and unusual colour scheme. Even the leather strap is unique 👌 See if you can lay your hands on this model from any subscriber in US for a review. I would gladly loan it to you for review, if I own one.
The Kontiki 20 is a fabulous Vintage watch.
Thanks for this video. Always wanted to know more about this brand.
Would be great to see Caravelle, Gruen, Baylor, perhaps Arnex? Don’t know much, just that they pop up on vintage watch dealers’ sites.
Gruen is a very good brand with many fun watches such as the "Airflight". It's a shame they pretty much only made cases in brass.
btw. the town's name is "Grenchen". Gretchen is a women's first name ;)
I collect vintage watches most of anything from the 1970 sent off. I just purchased one for $100 and I didn’t know what the heck I was buying but I’d check in another and is 400 watch
I've been looking for a Adventic or Kontiki. Great video
Great story Jory , would you know the Lanco Company ? you might have a look there . Cheers
Some of my favorite watches are eternal build like a tank
Jory, I have an Eterna quartz that I purchased in 1992.
Small correction: its not the Eterna Matic 3000 Dato but the Eterna Linea quartz. One of their first quartz watches which is 0.98mm thick. Also freres is pronounced FRERR and translates to brothers, which would have been a good sidenote on the history of the Schild brothers. ;)
I believe WatchChris owns 3 Eternas and loves them. He has a video on them dated April 21st
I like the Kontiki with the four triangle pointing inward
Excellent video my friend
I really like the designs of the modern Eterna
Good video. Could you do something similar for Enicar ? Great history and ambassadors.
Though their current offerings are not to my taste.
Proper stuff here! There's so many under-rated and generally unheard of watchmakers that existed and/or continue to exist. I could very easily end up with an overabundance of old greasy watches if I'm not careful.
I definitely would like to see a new eterna in person.
Hi Jory have you considered reviewing Enicar? A cool Swiss watch brand that didn’t survive the quartz crisis
I would like to hear about Marvin watch company. What happen to them? I own a vintage 1955 Marvin and apparently those watches were popular in the 40's and 50's.
ROFL... Funded in Grenchen. Gretchen is the nickname for Gretel. Just biding on an crazy beautiful Centenaire...
BTW, got the Eterna and after a 400$ service and another 100 for a new strap... my new favorite. For a few reasons... It has to be worn, because automatic. All my other watches are manual and I would never own a watch winder.
BTW all those french names aren't that complicated to pronounce. The é and è and all the other marks over the letters tell you a lot how to pronounce them and they follow rules. Unlike English where pronunciation and spelling are two different things.
