Dear @Stefani, I will see what I can do with female health in general. However, regarding irregular periods, please check with your family doctor or your Chinese Medicine practitioner as it is could be a complex health issue and it needs to be looked at properly. Please take very good care! 💖
HI @Shahmeer, thank you for your suggestion. Hi there, one basic function of ginger, merely for cooking purpose, is to get rid of the gamey flavour of the meat. The second function is, ginger can 'warm our TCM Spleen and Stomach', meaning to support our digestion. So adding ginger is to help with the digestion of the herbs, especially good for people who have weaker digestion or people who is 'colder' in nature. Having said that, if you are someone who is very prone to 'heat signs' and even a couple of slices of ginger can trigger that, then you can skip the ginger. Or if you simply don't like ginger, you can skip it too. It is ok for this soup, other herbs will do the work.
Hi @Jenny, yeah I love this soup too! I guess the 'small red beans', you are referring to Chi Xiao Dou (赤小豆)? If so, yeah, thats a good idea too as I saw some do that. Chi Xiao Dou is neutral and clear dampness, so will enhance the 'clearing dampness' of this recipe.

Hi @James, I am sorry for the late reply. I didn't see your comment until now. Sorry to hear that you are suffering from mouth ulcers. Usually, mouth ulcers are caused by 'heat'. Please note this is Chinese Medicine theories, and not based on western medicine. Yet it could be caused by many other factors too, the tips here are if it is caused by heat, if you are unsure, please check with your local Chinese Medicine practitioners. So, assuming it is caused by 'Heat', please make sure you are sleeping well and sleeping early, reducing stress and anxiety. @@ChineseHerbalPantry Thanks Shirley, just out of interest, how do the other cultures overcome "heatiness" especially those curry consuming ones. I also understand they are meat loving and not heavy vege consumers unlike the Eastern Asian that practises the concept of Yin & Yang in their diet.
@James, it is a very good question. Working as a pharmacist myself in Australia, we usually recommend symptomatic relief medications. For example, if patient comes in with acne, there is acne cream. If constipation, there are laxatives. If mouth ulcers, there is anti inflammation cream. Unfortunately, these symptoms are not treated as a 'whole' like the patten we know as the 'heatiness' in Chinese medicine. So, these symptoms tend to come back if we are not changing our eating habits or try to resolve the underlying cause ( 'heat').
Yay! Just found you as I'm searching for confinement recipes. And you are in Australia 🙏🙏🙏 can you recommend the best places to purchase confinement recipe ingredients??
Hi @Annie, I am glad that you found this channel. Do you mean confinement packages? For that, I am not very familiar. If for good quality Chinese herbs, please go to your local Chinese herbal shops or ask the Chinese communities where they buy them.
HI @Melanie, it depends on which herbs. Generally speaking, we don't eat the herbs after cooking for so long and many herbs are not very palatable. Having said that, herbs like goji berries, Chinese barley etc we may still eat them.
Hi @chhengchheng, sorry for my late reply. Yeah, you can keep for 2 to 3 days but not later than that! I personally don't keep it for more than 2 days.
Hi @Anna, I don't have an Instant Pot but yes you can use Instant pot to cook Chinese herbal soup as long as the inner lining of the inner pot is good stainless steel not aluminium.
Hi, i would like to seek for your advice pls. I boiled the cleaned dried herbs to make this soup. But black powder was found to be floating in the water during the boiling process. Not sure why, what was it. Is it considered safe to drink? Could it be possibly the spore of Fuling? or the skin peeled off from the brown lotus seeds? Thank U.
@laychoon7828, umm..... it is really hard to tell as I don't know the herbs you purchased. Having said that, if you are using the brwon lotus seeds, it is likely is due to the peel of the lotus seeds. Sometimes the Qain Shi (Euryale seeds) may have that too. But they not necessarily is powdery, usually I can use the peel reasonably clearly. But it also depends on the batch of herbs. If you are concern, what you can do is to use a small amount of brown lotus seeds to cook separate in water, and test it to see if there is the black powder again.
Great video! Should this soup be eaten at certain times of year? To coincide with seasonal changes? Or is it good to eat year round? What are the Chinese names for the 4 ingredients? Also, how do you feel about adding huang qi to the recipe? (A 5th minister? 😉)
Hi @Kaisersoce07, as I mentioned in the video, since these four herbs are all neutral, so generally speaking this soup is ok for year around as it is not cooling or warming. There are two herbs in this recipe help to clear dampness, so if the weather is damp (rainy), it is a good time to drink this soup too. As for the Chinese names of the herbs, you can check them in the description box and they show on the screen when I explained each herb too. Ha, 5th minister! This recipe is 'tightly' and masterfully formulated, adding Huang Qi will offset the 'neutral' property. This is because Huang Qi is slightly warm. Yet, if you prefer, want another Qi tonic and your body can take Huang Qi, yeah, you can add.
Hi @Connie, thanks! As for this soup, it gently boosts the Qi. When someone has good and freely flowing Qi, it tends to be able to protect you. In that sense, it would help to support our immune system. However, please don't think it will help to fend off any infectious diseases without doing what we need to do, such as washing hands, wearing masks etc. You know what I mean. Take care and keep well!
Hi @Adrianna, thanks for the suggestion. I will see what I can do😊. Hope you have subscribed to my channel, so that if I make a video for the above soup, you will receive notification for the new video. 😊
HI @Laurie, welcome to this community! Hope you are enjoying learning more about Chinese herbs here. Traditionally, we don't eat the herbs after cooking in soup. We drink the soup as most nutrients should be already in the soup. Many of these herbs are not palatable, except some limited ones, eg goji berries. In this soup, your mother can eat the two seeds. As for the Chinese yam, unless you cook with the fresh yum, but the dried Chinese yam is not palatable too. If your mother has digestive issues, I think it would be better for her to drink the soup only. Hope this helps. 😊
Should we eat those four ministers? Or just leave them and eat pork? Thank you for your valuable teaching ^^. I will try to find the ingredients and follow yours.
Hi @ployangjoe, oh! I actually did record the answer to your question but I think I last minute edited it out as the video is getting a bit too long! In short, it is up to you! I personally only eat the lotus seeds and fox nuts, as I like nuts and seeds. But I find the Poria and Chinese yam don't taste good after cooking and I don't like the texture, so I don't eat them. I am very happy to hear you are learning! Keep it up! 😊
@@ChineseHerbalPantry where is that record!?please? I don't want to miss your record. I may miss it because of my poor English. TT Please don't mind. Thank you very much Shirley. I enjoy your clips and your clarify teaching. Jia you.
@@ployangjoe Oh I actually have cut it out, unfortunately. No, you didn't miss anything. Usually, I filmed about 30 minutes of video and then edit it down to about 10-13 minutes. I have a tendency to talk too much and give too much information. So, I have to edit it down to about 10 minutes, otherwise, most people have no patience with a long video haha! So, I remember I did explain which herb you can eat but I took it out and didn't include it in this video!🤣
@@ChineseHerbalPantry thank you for your kind reply. I unsure if time stamp could help??? However, I think you explain well and easy so I won't mind if it takes longer time. Yet, you have to concern the other FC. I follow yours. :) Waiting for your next video ^^
@@ChineseHerbalPantry Since i am well-eater, I mean very well. 😂. So, its concerned me. But I read the herbs is very good for spleen, etc. Btw, thank you for good video👍
Hi @Sophie, ha I see! I understand your 'concern', if I am a good eater too! The thing about this soup is, it strengthen the TCM Spleen. If someone who is already lack of appetite, this soup may increase appetite. If it someone who is already eating well, it is not necessary will increase the appetite more, as supporting the TCM Spleen is also about supporting the digestion. When the digestion is good, you absorb the nutrients more appropriately , and you will feel the fullness instead of feeling hungry all the times - this itself is actually a 'healthier' Spleen. I hope the above makes sense!
Yes you can but lamb is quite warming, so will move this recipe to becoming a warming recipe. So, for Chinese Medicine, this is what I would consider when I add other ingredients to it.

I made this soup and the herbs turned mushy. Did I overcook the soup? And I end up with so little soup after boiling. What am I doing wrong? Thank you in advance!
Hi @May, did all the herbs turn mushy? Maybe you soaked them too long or cooked then too long or the fire was too high? Please make sure you check the consistency every 15 minutes or so. You can add more water during the cooking process too if not much soup left. It is always good to check your soup during cooking. Hope the above helps and try again to see it gets better next time! 😊

@@ChineseHerbalPantry Thanks Shirley,
just out of interest, how do the other cultures overcome "heatiness" especially those curry consuming ones.
Looks great, do you ingest the herbs?
HI @Melanie, it depends on which herbs. Generally speaking, we don't eat the herbs after cooking for so long and many herbs are not very palatable. Having said that, herbs like goji berries, Chinese barley etc we may still eat them.
can we replace or add fresh chinese yam? and how much?
Hi @Cecilia, yes you can use the fresh chinese yam instead. One stick is good enough.
Where to buy poria.
@Michelle, please go to your local herbal store and ask for it. Or if you can find good online herbal store.
Hello, may i ask if can cook herbal soup to Instant pot?thank you
Hi @Reychelle, you can use Instant pot as long as the inner lining of the pot is not iron or aluminium
We can cook and keep for 2 to 3 days it is ok?
Hi @chhengchheng, sorry for my late reply. Yeah, you can keep for 2 to 3 days but not later than that! I personally don't keep it for more than 2 days.
Do you use Instant Pot?
Hi @Anna, I don't have an Instant Pot but yes you can use Instant pot to cook Chinese herbal soup as long as the inner lining of the inner pot is good stainless steel not aluminium.
@Anna, please watch this video on why aluminium is not recommended. ua-cam.com/video/uDyx6Q_QbD8/v-deo.html
Hello, can I ask if pregnant women can drink this?
@@ChineseHerbalPantry Hi dear, many thanks for your kind advice. Appreciate so much. Have a nice day! ;-)
Great video! Does this soup help to boost immune system?
Hi @Connie, thanks! As for this soup, it gently boosts the Qi. When someone has good and freely flowing Qi, it tends to be able to protect you. In that sense, it would help to support our immune system. However, please don't think it will help to fend off any infectious diseases without doing what we need to do, such as washing hands, wearing masks etc. You know what I mean. Take care and keep well!
do u have any soup that help detox and help acne thank you
Hi @Adrianna, thanks for the suggestion. I will see what I can do😊. Hope you have subscribed to my channel, so that if I make a video for the above soup, you will receive notification for the new video. 😊
Please put ingridients in the comment section and the procedures thank you
Hi @Putika, the recipe is in the description box. Please check!
how much water in the pot?
HI @Edwina, about 1.5L to start . If you see the water is getting low during the cooking process, you can add more water.
How much water for soup
Hi @Michelle , I put 1.5 to 2 L of water. The full recipe is also in the description box.
Are the herbs soft to digest easily , my mom has many digestive issues. Also could this soup be blended? I am new. Thank you!
Oh yes, as for it can be blended, we don't usually blend it.
Hi, I’m vegetarian. Any one got ideas on how to modify this recipe?
Hi @Jessi, if you are vegetarian, just don't put the meat. It is ok without the meat. All the herbs are still there.
Jia you.
@@ChineseHerbalPantry okay I hoped I don't spoil the precious nutrition :). Thanks again.
Hi. Is this help increase appetiate?
HI @Sophie, sorry for my late reply. Yes, this soup also can help to increase appetite😊
@@ChineseHerbalPantry thank you for helpful info.
@Sophie, my pleasure ☺️
Can chicken, lamb, mushrooms, or any vegetable be used instead of Pork 🥩?
Yes you can but lamb is quite warming, so will move this recipe to becoming a warming recipe. So, for Chinese Medicine, this is what I would consider when I add other ingredients to it.

does anyone know any good stores to order chinese herbal/dried fruits/flowers ect. online?
Try to browse a clinic that closest to your city/ country.
I know one online but it only serve within my country. Why dont you better ask from a chinese clinic that you can buy in small quantity or just send them note for one or few recipe of cooking just like in this video.
@@raysubrata1337 Hi Ray, are you from Indonesia? May I know the online store, please? Thank you.
How Chinese medicine heal diabetic type 1 !?
Hi @Lady Dior, for Type 1 diabetes, it is a complicated health condition and it is impossible for me to explain it here. Nonetheless, due to the nature of the disease, please always consult your western medicine doctors. Chinese Medicine may only be able to play a complimentary role but it needs to be monitored closely by your western medicine doctors.
Hi Shirley, thanks for the recipe! Is this safe for pregnancy? I would like to try it but am pregnant. Thank you for sharing!
Hi @Greentellamonster, my apology for late reply as have been very busy with the festive season. If you stick to these four ingredients, they are usually ok for pregnancy as they are food ingredients. Having said that, I would still prefer you double check with your Chinese Medicine practitioner as I really don't know your overall health and pregnancy history, just in case! Take care!
Does white rice increase dampness in the body?
Hi @Hind, generally speaking, white rice may generate dampness. Yet, it also depends on each individual. If you are concerned or you feel you are very prone to dampness after white rice, then brown rice will be an option.
How many liter water use ?
Hi @Wong, please use 3 litres of water and cook it down to the concentration you prefer! Enjoy!
it’s frustrating for me that I can’t get the herbs where I live :(
@Anna, I am sorry to hear. Where do you live? Is there a Chinatown where you live? Usually there should be a herbal shop in Chinatown. Or many Chinese grocery stores would sell the herbs I mentioned in this video.
@@ChineseHerbalPantry I’m living in Europe Slovakia and the Chinese shop is in capital city Bratislava but I live far from it so I don’t have luck
@@annapsom.9 I am sorry to hear you live so far away from the capital city. Yet, I really appreciate and admire you taking the interest and effort to learn more about Chinese herbs! I think you are the first follower who wrote to me that is from Slovakia! 😊 I hope somehow one day, there will be a Asian grocery shop near you and that you can get the herbs. Or maybe try online store if you can find one? All the very best and please don't give up!
