Looking back on this film after all these years, I did notice that Rocky treated others the way he would want to be treated. At it's most basic level, it's human decency.
A lot of interesting things happened during the filming of this movie bc of how small the budget was - like the robe they ordered being too big in real life, not having the time or budget to order another one, so they used it in the movie and joked about it, or having to film Stallone running up the steps in one take bc they were running out of battery - but the coolest one to me is that the giant banner of Rocky that they ordered to hang over the ring for the final fight really did come back from the banner place with the wrong colors on Rocky's shorts. They didn't have enough money to order a new one, so they kept it in the movie and wrote the dialogue around it where Rocky says the colors are wrong and the promoter says, "It doesn't really matter, does it" - which ended up beautifully emphasizing how no one was giving Rocky any respect, or a chance to win the fight.
I live in Philadelphia and even after “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” debuted Rocky is still seen as one of the biggest/most influential depictions of the city in popular culture. At any given moment there’s usually 10+ tourists running up the Philadelphia Art Museum steps to recreate Rocky’s pose in the film
That’s awesome to hear. And I assure you, whenever I can make it out to visit Philadelphia, running the Rocky steps is the first thing I’m going to do.
The ending always shocks people - cutting after the "I love you" with the fight result being heard in the background - but this was always the story about Rocky and Adrian, the boxing was the window dressing. Stallone even says that Rocky was always a love story disguised as a boxing movie. You continue to amaze though, always good insight during and after the movie.
I love how they didn’t go the cheesy route with the outcome. It wouldn’t have been realistic to have Rocky beat Apollo. To me that’s one of the many things that made this movie what it is.
Micky wasn't using Rock, he was showing him hard love because Tocky was throwing away his potential being a Leg breaker for a loan shark, Paulie is Ricky's best friend & brother in-law, he's an asshole but they put up with him because they know deep down he loves them, The people of Philly also just love Rock they're not really riding his coat tails so much that they're showing him support! Even his loan shark boss Gazo treats Rock like his adopted son
I learned recently that when knocked down, a good boxer is trained NOT get up right away, but use the 10-count as a rest period to gather your senses and stamina before standing back up 🥊
Rocky is a timeless film, i love this whole franchise, i even enjoy part 5, i rewatched Creed just yesterday! Rocky Balboa has always been the most relatable underdog in movie history, love Sly and his work! ❤️
It was probably already mentioned, but the real story this movie was inspired by was a 1975-boxing match between then-heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali and Challenger Chuck Wepner. Wepner was severely outmatched but *almost* managed to go the distance (he was finally knocked out only seconds before the end of the 15th and final round). Stallone watched the match on TV and it inspired him to write the script for this movie. His own story during the early to mid-70s also parallelled Rocky's, as he was pretty much a nobody, homeless at times, taking odd jobs just to get _some_ money. Prior to "Rocky", he only had small roles in a couple of movies. This movie instantly catapulted him to stardom.
Stallone was at that fight in person, not watching on TV. It is worth mentioning that while that story is popular knowledge, what isn't really known is that Stallone invented Rocky and the idea of Rocky around 1973 (Stallone paints all his characters to get a handle on them and there is one of his paintings in existence of "Rocky" from 1973). So it had been peculating in his mind since then. However, he thought the idea was too outlandish and unbelievable. Then, he sees the Ali/Wepner fight and his idea is really happening in front of the whole world. So he goes home immediately after the fight and gets to writing. And the rest is history.
I'm sure someone has told you, but there's 6 Rocky movies and 2 Creed movies. For the record, Rocky isn't a movie about boxing, it's a great love story about an underdog boxer.
Mickey could care less about any “hype train”. When we are young we are like astronauts heading out and exploring and doing. When we’re older we become more like archaeologists digging back through our past. That’s partly what Mickey was doing, maybe a little sad that he didn’t pay as much attention to Rocky but he could care less about the money. He wants to be part of an amazing opportunity. And you can tell even when he was mad at Rocky he cared for him. Good reaction, thanks!
Rocky!!!! Gotta disagree on a couple points. Mick did love Rock. Thats why he took his locker, he believed in him so much, it was too heartbreaking watching him waste his talent. He went back to make sure Rocky could give his best. I don't think everyone was trying to ride is coattails when he got the fight. That's Philly, they were supporting their own. Like Grazo, he saw an Italian kid and just wanted to help him out. The Rocky series is a great journey, especially once you get to the newer ones and Creed.
I’ve noticed that a lot lately in reactions that people think Mick is trying to get close to Rocky now that he has a shot and could be heading to the big times. I always thought Mick was very tough love and Rocky just needed someone to offer to help. Is it because Rocky is proud or afraid to ask I can’t decide but Mick loves him for sure.
This was Stallone's second attempt at making a sports movie, based on a script he wrote. The first was "Paradise Alley"', a story about an indie wrestler, coming up in the business. That movie would later get made but only AFTER Stallone had become famous.
That was film history. The montage that ends with Rocky running up the steps and throwing his arms up in victory was the first scene shot with a steady cam. Iconic moment, too.
Without meaning to, this movie sequel baits the hell out of the next movie. While not originally planned, "Rocky II" (1979) was inevitable given the massive success of the original.
An all time classic. The sequels get a bit over the top but they're all enjoyable. The sixth one is my second favorite. It goes back to its roots and feels very much like this one.
I remember the first time watching the Rocky movies and by God were they amazing. Not only did they blow me away they also taught me the importance of never giving up no matter how hard things get. They helped me learn what it means to be a man.
There are SIX Rockys. The 6th one is called Rocky Balboa. Lots of folks will sau dont bother with 5. I personally like 5 better than 4.but 4 and 5 def the weaker ones. But they are necessary. Cant wait for you to get through the series. EVERYBODY should go through this series for the life gems. Good job
He really needs to do IV though (as you know) for the connections to the Creed series. V is the only one that can be skipped because it mostly doesn't matter narratively. But he has to watch it anyway, because we had to 😂
Probably to be honest which is why he clung to the idea of playing the main part in his screenplay. I mean the guy was practically homeless and turned down several high money offers because he refused not to have the main part, either this shows he was really attached to the character or he knew the character could become so iconic that he would be out of the streets if he had the role, my guess is probably both.
Such a good reaction. Quality content because you don't talk over the important stuff. Regarding Paulie, if you watch the rest of the series he gets a really good arc. He is mostly a curmudgeon, but there are some flashes in there. He is one of my favorite characters.
Yep, 8-7 to Rocky from one judge and 8-7 and 9-6 to Apollo from the other two. As close a win margin as it's possible to have, plus flooring the world champion. Rocky got all he wanted and more.
His acting chops are strong Especially in First Blood. Watching it as an adult just ripped my heart out. I was so young when it came out and our experience in recent years is people just showing love and gratitude for veterans. But that wasn’t the case in the time first blood was out. The Rambo movies aren’t really given credit for it but they were all so deep. I can’t re-watch the most recent. That one was so heartbreaking.
It's really vaguely inspired by boxer Chuck Wepner, who was way outclassed when he fought Muhammad Ali. But he nearly lasted the entire fight and even once knocked Ali down. Supposedly Stallone didn't admit til years later that Wepner's fight inspired the movie.
Hrrrmmmm.... It's a stretch to say he genuinely knocked Ali down. In reality he tripped him. That it was ruled a knockdown is mostly down to the ref's incompetence.
1 tip for watching the Rocky films. Rocky's way of defending himself in boxing is to block punches with his face. Remember that, and the fights will be easier to watch
You also have Rocky Balboa, which is essentially Rocky 6. It’s not 100% essential to watch before Creed, but there is a couple things in there that are in the Creed movies.
Right time my man. It is the 45th Anniversary. No.1 film of 1976 and winner of 3 Oscars. Stallone was nominated for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay. Truly inspiring. Everybody's true underdog story. Your I'm for quite a journey.
When you’re knocked down, best bet is to take the maximum rest you can without the ref calling it, so most fighters will take advantage of at least the 8 count (if there is a standing 8 count rule at least). That’s why Mick told him to stay down. Just some fyi buddy, and VERY glad you’re doing this series.
There are 6 Rocky films. The last is called Rocky Balboa, it came out in the mid 2000's. The first and the last are my favs, but the whole series is great.

A movie about worth and fulfillment. Rocky just doesn't want to be a bum and everyone is some type of "loser." How do they find some value in life? Excellent choice and great reaction.
Stallone wrote and stared on this movie after years of being rejected by many studios and ending almost homeless. The dog you see is his dog in real life, he had to sell that dog and then bought it back when he got back on his feet.
My family and I watch at least 3 or 4 different Rocky movies a year. They're Great! Glad you get to experience them for the first time. First one will always hold a special place in my heart.
One of the greatest films of all time. All of these movies are a good time. Some way better than others. ROCKY, ROCKY II, and CREED are at the top tier. I hope you enjoy them all though.
My boy primate is sharp. He always catches it. I'm mid movie. He called it Apollo won by decision as it happened. Other reactions missed it and didn't know who won.
17:04 I don’t really think that’s what this was about. I think people care that someone is representing them as an underdog against the top heavyweight in the world. It’s not the nobody cared it’s that they didn’t know him before.
Today, no fight would be allowed to continue to the end with the beating these two take in the fight. Even back then, even with fewer restrictions and health regulations, they may not have let them finish it.
I'm not a boxing fan but I'm pretty sure Rocky not putting up his hands to defend himself would cost him a TKO, and he does it constantly during the fight. I do appreciate though that it highlights that Rocky isn't a good fighter, he's just someone who can take as well as dish out a lot of punishment, so it's not like he suddenly became a top ranked contender in 5 weeks.
Having seen a few reactions to this film, you really do appreciate the quality of this film. It’s a well deserved classic film for all times. A love story disguised inside a boxing match 😀

i noticed you said 5 rocky movies and 2 creed ones want about the 6th rocky movie called rocky balboa?
Countless Reaction channels pumping this garbage down people's throats.
