Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a UA-cam video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

M&Ms better than smarties? Now hang on there a minute whist I formulate a strongly worded complaint!
IKR???
I love how you went "Ooo hello" - you are essentially British now. Canada, you're not having her back, she's ours now.
Too late my friend. She was born here........lol
It's even better than "Ooo... hello.", 'cause she dropped the 'h'! xD
"Ooo hello" isn't just British. Canadians and Americans say it too. We just pronounce the h.
Yeh, she said Ooh 'ello !
If you love peanuts in your bars look out 4 starbars your love em also would love to see you do some crisps reviews .
Alanna in less than 5 years the people of the UK 🇬🇧 have taken you into our hearts and now consider you a National Treasure. 😎👍🏻
You're too kind!!
She's not ready for jam yet. Somebody buy that lady a cream tea !!
@@AdventuresAndNaps I don't know if anyone else said this, but you got the Racer and Titan bars mixed, Racer=Snickers (presumably because Snickers used to be 'Marathon') and Titan=Mars (as in the moon/planet and Greco-Roman mythology) though I've no idea why the Twix is called Jive.
BTW if you want some Brit Brownie points, start calling brands by their old UK names e.g. Marathon, Opal Fruits, Oil of Olay, Jif etc. If you ask around for old names to research and watch some old adverts, it might make a good video.
@@uoodSJW *Ulay... and it will only work with us old ones!
"oohh 'ello" as the bottle hissed. The most English thing I've ever seen you do.
"Who doesn't love to eat seals?" may be the most Canadian thing I've heard you say!
I thought the exact same haha
Completely random but does anyone besides my city call a rope swing a zunga
“Without further ado, let’s go...” *Immediately proceeds with further ado about the lighting* Some things will never change, and I’m OK with that. 😂😂
Speaking of that lighting, Alanna - you ain't got it right yet, gal! You've probably already seen that, by the end, those sausage-shaped light-projections on the top of your head are MOST unpleasantly distracting! Plus - it's throwing the rest of your face into too much shadow! I'd strongly suggest a re-think! Perhaps some sort of thin, white curtain or screen to diffuse that direct sunlight..?
Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die".
BUT, mercy said "I dont want to give them what they deserve. I don't want them to be cut off from Me. I love them despite all they have done/will do against Me. I want to give My children another chance. I want them to come home and live in My love again".
And love said "Jesus, God's Son, came down as a Man, our representative, suffering every temptation, pain and struggle we have ever faced, yet without sin. He took all our sins (past/present/ even future) to the cross and then crucified EVERY ONE on our behalf. Justice was paid on the cross so that we can be free from Hell's punishment, experience Gods mercy of forgiveness of sin and live in His love. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (turn away from our sin and pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life.
He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through Him (not ourselves as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to obey His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and ask Him to help us in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will.
NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER.
X if you have any questions let me know!
As a kid I never developed a sweet tooth, probably due to rationing when I was very small. So when that ended, I used to buy a Mars bar every Saturday as a special treat, and that was my only sweet. The Pacer bar is the size that Mars bars used to be until Mars developed a conscience and reduced the size to fight childhood obesity. In reality it was their excuse for shrinkflation with a pseudo morality.
They could have made a Flake, and left out the 'L' !! They really missed a trick!!
Eating chocolate in the name of research sounds like a good gig to me!
The Racer bars are definitely the Snickers equivalent, not the Mars one - probably also called "Racer" as the old UK name for Snickers was Marathon...
Nice deduction, I hadn't spotted the relevance.
Mars equivalent is called Titan, Twix equivalent is called Jive. Both very good too.
Yep, exactly what I came here to say!
It’s a good job the seal bars weren’t called clubs. 😂😂
Clubs already exist.
@@ragereaver8576 I think he was referring to this old Canadian pastime www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/commercial-slaughter-of-baby-seals-set-392253
Hysterical 😂
'S-s-s-slaughter a seal' - unofficial potential ad slogan? I wonder if anyone at Aldi considered the naming carefully for such potential awkwardness?
Jam "...an old person's thing". I was gonna get on my high horse but then thought to myself 'hang on, I am old.' so fair enough.
😂
Same here 🤪
yeah - I straight away thought - my kids love jammie wagon wheels - but then my "kids" are now in their thirties so... fair enough
Im 33 and i love anything jam 😊👍
I was quite snooty about Aldi/Lidl when they first came to Scotland. I thought they were the same as every other cut price supermarket I'd shopped in- knock off brands at low prices but with low quality too. Until the time I was obliged by circumstances to shop in one- it was a revelation and I've been shopping there ever since. Not for everything but for most groceries and household cleaners, etc. they are noticeably cheaper and at least as good in quality.
It's more than 10 years since the revelation and I'm still not quite over it yet.
For fish meat and vegetables they're pretty unbeatable. Unless you want a john dory or a Lychee 😅
i'm a 5 minute walk away from an Aldi, so i go there out of mainly convenience, but i swear i spend half there what i would at my local asda for a weeks shopping
I've told you before Alanna, you're not a "foreigner", you're a much loved honorary Brit who we've adopted as our own 😀
@If it ain't woke, Don't fix it She's too much of a lady for the Kebab shop 😂
7:37 "Ooh 'ello.." - Not taken long to get back to talking native by the sounds of it :D
"Oh , ello". Induction to Britain complete.
Time to get your Pot Noodle on ! You've done the sweet, now for the savoury :)
"Biscuit filled with mallow and jam and covered with chocolate flavoured coating" is EXACTLY what it says on the wrapper a Jammie Wagon Wheel too. Personally, I can't tell the difference.
Did you venture down the “Middle aisle” at Aldi and pick yourself up a two man canoe and a garden patio set?! Honestly some of the random stuff they sell down that ‘Middle aisle. It’s like an aisle selling all the prizes that the contestants use to win on Bullseye!
It's like shopping in the twilight zone. You never know what's there or how much you want it until you see it.
Can there be a more British thing than saying: "Ooh, 'ello!", when the cola fizzed unexpectedly ?
Alanna, there is a great one you missed from Aldi, Please get a packet of "Oaties" biscuits made by Bellmont,
they are a knock-off of McVities milk chocolate Hobnobs, and I think they actually taste better than McVities.
They're in a light blue pack, the same colour as the Oreo knock-offs.
Yup, Oaties are awesome (I believe they use finer-rolled oats than the McVities Hobnobs, or at least have a finer sieving process). Be aware, they don't just come in chocolate, there is also a plain version that I have occasionally accidentally bought (hooray for foggy glasses)
I've never noticed cheap copycat sweets in Aldi here in France. I also visit Lidl occasionally, there was a time when they sold copycat Mars, Snickers and Twix bars, much cheaper and good enough, but now they've discontinued all except the copy Twix bars. The French love their chocolate, perhaps they are too proud (discerning) to buy a copy brand.
Another belting video. And the best bit was when you said “Oooh ‘ello’. Proof that you’ve definitely lived in the UK for a long time. Fabulous 😄
10.56 - A snickers bar used to be called a "marathon" bar, hence why I think the 'copy' was known as a "racer" bar. It's been some time since I purchased a pack of "racer" bars, but the chocolate, nuts etc were very nice. They are slightly smaller size bars, but a pack of six is currently 0.55p which is less than one snickers bar £0.60p!
I've never come across any of these knockoffs in more than 40 years of Blighty-dwelling. I like that you said "swig" rather than drink! :)
I moved back to the US recently after 30+ years in the UK. While in the UK, I saved 40% on the cost of a typically weekly shop by going to Aldi vs. Tesco, and the food quality was every bit as good.
The reason that M & Ms taste better than Smarties is probably because there's a higher chocolate to coating ratio in them. Smarties, I found seemed to be more crunch than anything else.
1:06 way to make friends in the corporate retail industry - and their legal department.
2:52 I'm betting when not filming, the Aero (sorry, Bubbly) doesn't touch the sides on the way down - gone in one GULP
11:06 Marathon. You will never be one of us until you realise it is a Marathon
Definitely one of my favourite UA-camrs. You are always so entertaining. Thanks 👍
Great glasses! You're totally rockin' that "hot librarian" look :)
Hooray! Another Alana Eats Stuff In England video! So glad to see this. Also - had to pause the video to read about Smarties and M&Ms. Very interesting history.
I've been doing Keto for the past 3 years and am glad to say I have no desire to eat any of those chocolates or sweets. thank you for these videos which are a good test of my hunger pangs.
I love the subtlety of "Seal Bars"! Maybe they could come out with Tiger bars that look like Lion bars or Harlequins rather than Minstrels.
ill wait for troubadours! haha
It isn't just ALDI who make copy products with 'obvious' names. ASDA used to produce a Penguin look-a-like called a Puffin Bar, and were even prosecuted for producing a "I can't believe it's not butter' clone called "You'd butter believe it's not butter"!
Can we nominate you for a Nobel Prize for the advancement of chocolate science? Cart Wheels were clearly not your favourite from the very first taste. You were very brave to take a second bite.
I appreciate the relative subtlety of branding Snickers as Racers.
Alanna starring in the next series of Aldi adverts hiding her glass of cider behind boxes of chocolates or snacks.
When I was a Kid my Gran would give me little chocolate covered square bars called Club with two different flavours either orange or mint always liked the mint ones
Remember the song off the advert?? 😀👍
They've been discontinued in their original form unfortunately.
we love you Alanna and we're so proud of you x I honestly want to give you the special honorary title Lady Alanna
13:39 every good supermarket has their own, Asda has puffin and the other day my mum bought us some polar bars from Sainsbury’s
Aldi are being cautious calling their "Penguin" alternatives "Seal" bars. That's just close enough to remind you of penguins without being blatently plagiarist. Back in the day, ASDA were prosecuted for counterfeiting Pengiun bars, when they brought out their identical 'Puffin" bars. (This was around the time that the manufacturers of "I can't believe it's not butter" took ASDA to court for branding their 'similar' product as "You'd butter believe it's not butter"!!!))
Yes, that was my first thought about these products - it's called "passing off" and it's illegal. However, it is possible that some of these are not fake at all and made by the same manufacturer (more common than you realise). For example Aldi's and Waitrose's wheat biscuits have the same packaging and lot number format (even down to the font) so they have to be the same company surely? I suspect they are made by Weetabix anyway.
Clubs are better and easier to find in the shops.
@@ragereaver8576 In the same shops as seals?
@@hairyairey I can't remember the store but I remember a case where someone bought a multi pack of own brand hula hoops and when they opened the 'own brand' outer bag it was found to contain bags of KP hula hoops in their usual livery.
Aldi brought out an Irn Bru rip off called Iron Brew
Aldi cake bars, like Mr Kipling are actually made here in Barnsley, at the Kipling factory! It’s the same product in a different box 😊 & the mince pies are the same recipes & ingredients has M&S, just a different box again! My friend works there, she makes the fondant fancies 🤣 love Aldi, 🥰 Welcome back lovely 😊
What generally happens is the manufacturer will be making the supermarket own brand products as well as their own branded ones but to the customer's recipe. So Mr Kipp.ing will be making both the Aldi, Lidl and M&S mince pies for example but whereas most of the ingredients will be coming from one storeroom, M&S will have their own ingredients on site. They're also red hot on surprise factory inspections.
Oh, finally one of your best rubrics are back! Thanks so much! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
The only mystery is how you could have thought that something imitating Wagon Wheels could be anything other than disgusting and inedible. If they weren't they wouldn't have been an accurate imitation of the real thing.
Alanna!! Please do this again but for crisps from aldi. I dont have a sweet tooth at all but crisps on the other hand... Welcome back to the UK! So happy to have u back!
Thank you for brightening up this miserable wet day, I love a taste that video. Hope you’re well and getting used to being home.
Alanna's tasting videos are always funny and lovely. This channel is definitely a gem :)
Wow, thank you!
You're welcome!
In October 1996, United Biscuits sued Asda because they said Asda said their own brand of "Puffin" biscuits were part of the Penguin brand. In March 1997, United Biscuits won the case. The court found out Asda had not broken any laws on how the Penguin brand could be used.
I had a mint bubbly bar about a week ago. You have described this perfectly - its really strong and I can still taste it even now. Thanks for the vid and still enjoying having you back in the UK, still feels like an unexpected treat! xxxx
Great video. Loved it. People who don’t use Aldi or Lidl - don’t realise most of their products are fantastic quality. They think being cheap is nasty. But you couldn’t be more wrong. Great places to shop.
From here on out, everytime I hear the word ‘Mars’, ‘SNICKERS’ will flash before my eyes, 😂😂
LOL loved your Cartwheels review and admire your dedication to your research in going in for a second bite. Your audience salutes you :) When you got to the Racer bars and you put it close to the camera, you said Mars I said Marathon and it made me feel so old.
I like Racer, Bubbly and Seal. I believe Racer are Snickers knock-offs and the Titan bars are Mars. There's also a Twix knock-off, though I can't recall its name. Haven't tried the Wagon Wheels, Smarties knock-offs yet. Overall, the ones I have tried have been good quality imo and quite a bit cheaper than the originals, so they get a thumbs-up from me. As always, a fun video--thank you!
Alanna looking foxy in them glasses 😍
Hope you got to the beer garden after quarantine and before lockdown for a nice cider in the sun.
I know this will come over as weird but when you say 'Mars Bars'... I love that accent.
Rather enjoyed that, like all your videos but find the food testing and cooking ones the best. Nice to see you back in the UK and looking happy again.
Extreme Cola should always be drinking frozen cold at best because I love the stuff and it sugar-free is good for diabetes
Thanks for giving me 25% of a reason to shop at Aldi lol.
Also in this day and age, don't tell people you'll do whatever they want to see you do 🤣
Great vid! Vid suggestion, cook Spag Bol from scratch 😋
Next will be blind testing Seal against Penguin bars, choc and cream against Oreo, Racer against Mars. And see if you can tell which is which?
There's a hazelnut chocolate bar for about 70p under the label chocuer, an amazing chocolate bar.
Everyone thinks Aldi quality is going to be much worse, but really the quality is like 9/10 across the board and regularly half the price. One thing you should try Alanna is their brioche tear and share, it's incredible!
Also give Carlos takeway garlic bread it is YUM!
Great to see that cheeky smile again .... We love Aldi .. and the prices too .... eating Seals is Cool .... YUMMY
This will be the video that the original brands use as evidence when they take Aldi to court.
Hi Alana, love the show. Glad you did not eat a Club bar before the Seal bar - that would have been in bad taste!
sunlight !!?? I remember tales of a firey ball in the sky, I'd written it off as a myth
I suspect they are the exact same sweets. I know a biscuit factory near us make chocolate biscuits and sell them under their own well known brand but also do the exact same biscuits for other shops including Sainsbury's and M&S. Same biscuit. Different wrapper. Different price. I know Aldi do the same. Great to see you home 😀
Seal Bars. hmmm. What could that possibly be a rip-off of? Anyway, glad to see you back in the UK doing some important quality control science. No, seriously, welcome back home.
Jive and Titan bars from Aldi, they're basically Twix and Mars bars. Plus, Aldis beers are pretty good too
You hit the nail on the head with this vid. A lot of the cheaper products match their expensive counterparts, but some things you just have to have the original. Hope you start saving yourself some money by getting the cheap shop to keep the bigger boys honest.
"Ooh, 'Ello?"
You're definitely back! :-D
Welcome to Aldi knock-off snacks, you're gonna love 'em :D The Aldi full-sugar cola with the red label is actually not bad, it doesn't taste much like Coca-Cola but it's the best own-brand cola I've found for like 45p a bottle or whatever it costs now. Aldi also used to sell 'disco biscuits' which were rectangular biscuits topped with chocolate and smarties, but they renamed them to 'groovy biscuits' so people didn't think there was actual drugs in them.
The genuine Tunnocks Caramel Wafer bar far surpasses its imposter
Love the sarcasm, real wagon wheels are gross also
Isn't she great for taste testing chocolates and sweets ahead of Halloween to ensure the children in her neighbourhood don't get rubbish sweets. The self sacrifice is to be commended 🍫😉
You said "this video will have no views" and now I have watched it twice.
and the next video will testing medication for bad stomachs after too much chocolate. Love you picked a Zero Sugar cola!
I had to LOL at you getting your snickers in a twist :-D
Back in the UK for 5 minutes, and any interest in good dental care goes right out of the window. How British 🤣
.....well I think you would love a bounty Bar.....coconut covered in dark chocolate.....difficult to get hold of but worth the search...
Takes bite. Pulls face. Shakes head. Goes back in for another bite anyway
It's the only way to be sure
Love how you took a second huge bite of cart wheel...just to double check how gross it was😀😀
You have to be sure!
@@AdventuresAndNaps 👍😄😄😄
Alanna, firstly, Oreos are not British, they are American. As far as the "Rip Off" snacks along with "Own Brand" snacks, especially the better ones, may be made by the makers of the originals. A friend of mine worked for "Cadbury" and they told me that they would be packing a "Cadbury" version one week then the same item in "Own Brand" labels the next. Good video, good to have you back in the UK.
Yes, I've heard similar from someone doing part-time work when they were a student. The only thing they changed on the production machine was when loading the rolls of labels
I'm glad you like Aldi products so much, because now they're expanding. Their new UA-cam channel is called Misadventures and Catnaps.
Hi Alanna, I've got a Idea for you strange places in the UK. Llangattock, Brecon Beacons has a gravity hill where your car rolls uphill, the Bolton Strid one of the deadliest rivers in the UK and it looks like a stream, The Upside Down House, Bournemouth. To name but a few there are lots of unusual strange things in the UK lol.
I love these food videos of yours and the complete enthusiasm you display!
Thank you so much!
Snickers bars used to be called marathon bars in the uk . That's where they got the name racer from.
Whist working in retail a supplier told me that Aldi had the most stringent and regular quality checks than any of the other big brands at a particular manufacturing base for all the multiples .
Great video!! I really enjoyed it!! Thanks for making it :)
Thank youuuuu!!!!!
Many of aldi own brand products are actually made by major well known brands, they are just packaged differently.
woohoo!!! I forgot it was Tuesday due to Thanksgiving yesterday. Yum, I was happy I had chocolate to eat while I watched.
It's a known fact that a dietary combination of Choc Ums, Racers and Seals promote shiny hair!
Btw Mar's bars used to be so big, my grand parent's used to use a knife to cut a Mars bar into 4 before sharing one!!!
Try that today!

All (or nearly all) is right in the world again :)
Dose anyone remember when Snickers were called Marathon.
Still is.

Snickers used to be known as a "Marathon" bar. So Racer bars are a knock off from that.
I really hope on Halloween you dress up and say 'Hi everyone it's NOT me'
You are right, Mint Chocolate and Ice Cream is the best.
Years sgo, Wispa had a limited edition mint bar. It was just like the Wispa Caramel bar, but had a think mint strip instead of caramel. They really need to bring that back.
Sounds beautiful!
Somehow whenever I'm on a diet, I end up watching you eating lots of snacks which I could absolutely destroy (even the ones that are only 1 out of 8 pioneer wagons)
Hi, You worked out that Racer was a knock off Snickers, its called Racer because Snickers was called Marathon, in the UK for a while. They do a knock off Mars, called Titan.
You should also try their chocolate bars, Dairy fine mint creme I remember as Fry's chocolate cream (but that was so long ago) , Spirals which I think are knock off Kinder Beuno.
Its Tuesday and Alana is back. Excellent, sun came out when you started and someone made a noise outside..things are as they should be. How about a blind taste test with your top faves versus total knock offs. Can Aldi make matchmakers the same or perhaps lemon and scampi twigletts or even the double decker. Tune in next time same time same place ... wonder if aldi make black jacks :)
Alanna ! Speaking of fake products from Aldi. This supermarket has ripped off my favourite Butter/Marg spread called CLOVER. In Aldi, I once made a mistake and bought what looked like and a very similar Green & Yellow tub of ...wait for it.....called LOVE ! OMG ! No taste at all. In fact, it tasted like LARD ! Never again. And anyway, Aldi/Lidl don't cater for my dietary requirements of Gluten-Free food. My local shops don't sell Free From. That's fine by me, I've been shopping in proper supermarkets. :)
