Showed this to my mother, she thought it was funny, though mentioned that the part about being shot with an arrow was exaggeration. Then I remind her the time I got shot in the head by some kid's homemade bow & arrow and they decided to not take me to the hospital, despite a doctor there saying that wound would require at least 5 stitches. (end up not going to the hospital, but since I recovered it's all good) Edit: I almost forgot, the guy (also Asian) who shot me ended up becoming a doctor. Like this story just ended up having everything.
The fact that she thought it was credible enough to call out as exaggeration should be food for thought for people who think that this bit is "obvious" satire.
Goddamn, Indian families will actually trust your advice as a doctor. XD Chinese mom and dad will put onions in the cardinal directions cause WeChat told em before listening to the medical advice of their PH.D. graduate child.
As a Chinese Malaysian, we give/receive money when attending wedding, birthday, funeral, house warming, business opening, Chinese New Year, even after death (someone will burn the money for us) By the way, other than Gong Xi Fa Cai, we have dozens of greetings to say during Chinese New Year, which are all related to money 🤣
LOL jokes aside Money is everything as well as nothing. The deeper meaning to this culture of money is the experience of hardship, poverty and just to fill the stomach. While i also experience the same thing i got to experience first hand if you don't have money our family literally were only eating vegetables and salty fish for meals. Its more of a community getting together to gather enough money so that their son's can get married as well as a small sum of seed money to feed the family. Later on as the economy gets better and upward social mobility becomes much easier the Younger generation no longer experience Poverty and started to question as to why Money is so important. As for moving up the social ladder and becoming a Doctor well what is wrong with moving up the social ladder? But for those who grew up in poverty its the quickest way and ticket to provide a better life and future. But as we our Wages and quality of life goes higher younger generation not faced with the same living experience and condition wouldn't understand. They think when they are born life is so comfortable. But again Money isn't everything. However without it you cannot even donate to charity even if you want to. Look at the current condition today with the Pandemic out of control. My heart aches when i see many desperate people selling food on the streets trying to get by just to ensure their kids get fed. Its about how you choose to spend Money when you have it and its about survival when you don't.

Very true for some families. People want their children to get into a profession to take other people's money as much as possible, along with having prestige and power. It's not about finding a calling or what the child would enjoy doing in life. It's about the responsibility of earning and taking care of the family. Money, prestige and power are considered the main factors required to secure stability and prosperity for the family.
Happy Chinese New Year. Good luck and good health. --- this is the tradition way to greet others during new year. untill hongkong culture started spreading in 80s. it is a fact too.

2 reasons of why Asian parents want their children to become doctors: to get money and to get their children to be doctors for them for free in the future
Not Asian but when I was studying premed my parents were setting me up to do the same thing. It starts with jokes about it but then they're calling you in the office about a flu.
Asian Parents want the “set”: A doctor, a lawyer, an engineer and a business person. For the last 2, Engineer if you’re Indian, Business person if you’re Chinese.
As one with chinese roots, I can confirm that. BUT most of the chinese gesture sayings must not be translated literally. It would as u can see just sound funny. Those "special cultural best wishes" can just be summed up as kindness and goodwill toward u. For Chinese and also for Japanese the symbolic meaning is very important.
Ronny Chieng does a great show, mixing humor & satire with social commentary. Original and really hilarious. My family is Italian on both sides and we are just one tent away from a full-blown circus, so even not being Asian, I could relate to a lot of Ronny’s humor.
The Chinese obsession with wealth is ingrained into the culture. In my time, which is a long time ago, we learned how to gamble before even stepping foot in school. The elders are not bothered by it because it's good to use your brains and sometimes it takes 4 punters. People asked why math is our thing, this is one of the reasons.
I am Bangladeshi and I can confirm that he is 100% correct. My dad hates doctors with his life, though my parents wished I would be a doctor. My mom still regrets because I never tried to go to medical college.
"Everyday we go like: "Hey, God of Money... gives us money." And he gives us more money. Very fickle god. Doesn't care about inflation." If that's the case, so I'll convert to Chinese Taoism. Gong Xi Fa Cai, everyone.
I love how the audience sounded uncomfortable when he said Chinese people love money. Must have been the "woke" white people. After living in China for 15 years and having a Chinese family here .....I can say "Chinese people looooooove money"!
Not to mention the absolute sharks they can be in mahjong. They smell the money in the water from 5 miles away. My grand aunt was an absolute savage at the table.
what he say 100% correct 😂😂 my dad want me to be a doctor or a nurse at least, but since I was a kid, my dad hate so much to go hospital and see doctor. then I ask him, “so will u hate me when I become a doctor?” he stare me for a long time. yea dad, I get it.
Living in China I can attest to this 1000%. My wife is Chinese and although she doesn’t enjoy most stand up comedy, she was howling over this set. Guy is hilarious!
Being a Latin... I'm telling you... These Boomers don't know what the hell they're doing. It's all a big theatrical stage to them! They just want fame and prestige... Nothing real! Imagine if everyone was a doctor.... Then who would make the food, the cars, the tv's, the clothes, the electricity, etc etc etc. We need farmers, technicians, engineers,.... Whatever! This is one of the biggest flaws of Capitalism. Everyone is pursuing that goddamn metal and paper and forgetting the most important things in life. And btw, being from a Socialist country, the public sector is like devouring the private sector to the point that we barely make food to sustain the native population. Everyone wants that prestige and image. And guess what, doctors don't create wealth, they don't sell anything. Other than their labor... And that is almost like selling air. I've yet to meet a person that wants to be a farmer. It's really insane. Btw our countries share a common ancestry of friendship... So allow me to send my compliments to India and their amazing people.

(end up not going to the hospital, but since I recovered it's all good)
Edit: I almost forgot, the guy (also Asian) who shot me ended up becoming a doctor. Like this story just ended up having everything.
It just means she thinks of her own body differently. No contradiction there.
She just wanted you to be stronger...maybe in the future you can stop real arrows. :)
The fact that she thought it was credible enough to call out as exaggeration should be food for thought for people who think that this bit is "obvious" satire.

As a Chinese Malaysian, we give/receive money when attending wedding, birthday, funeral, house warming, business opening, Chinese New Year, even after death (someone will burn the money for us)
By the way, other than Gong Xi Fa Cai, we have dozens of greetings to say during Chinese New Year, which are all related to money 🤣
😂😂😂
🤣🤣 they have trillion dollar fake bills to burn
Yes, I can't believe he missed that opportunity of fitting in the burning of money as well.
You have same rituals as Indians 😂
