What I love about this is Richards plays a kid being an actual KID, with all the horrible shit that it entails. He's not a TV kid, he's a real life kid. This is way closer to how a lot of kids actually played with army guys.
When you were 10, this was hilarious. That's how old I was, and 1980 was fuckin AWESOME!! Probably only because it came right after the 70s, which can barely even be described....maybe "Paradise "!
ain't nothing like waiting in the quiet audience for the show Fridays to begin , director saying, "All quiet", then the countdown, 3,..2,..1... when, without any warning, comes Battle Boy, screaming at jet-decibel volume, "AAAHHH!!!" It's enough to cause a stroke!
LOL...I did the same thing with my Army men. I remember watching this episode of Friday's. I laughed so hard. Because it was looking back at myself and my friend's. When were kids.
Remember, this was on late night Friday, when parents were already asleep in bed after a long week of work, and many parents did not let their kids watch SNL. But teens stayed up to watch Fridays. I know I did. It was funnier if we got HAF first. Cable TV was not universal, not many VCRs in homes. This was unique boundary pushing Network TV comedy. The woman actually said a curse word, "hell". Such language was not allowed on network TV before 11pm. But "hell" occasionally slipped through if said in the proper context.
Fridays was a stone cold competitor of SNL . I was on a construction crew for ABC studios at that time and place. I always hoped Fridays would kick their ass. Sometimes,,,,,they did.
Fridays was parodying SNL and testing the audience on whatvwas real and what was make believe. SNL had Kaufman on after Friday's because SNL was Afraid Fridays would surpass them.
Except Fridays philosophy of "testing the audience" led to the fake fight between Kaufman and Richards (very much Andy's idea) which a lot of people still remember today. Whereas SNL didn't have the insight to even consider something like that. Fridays was a perfect platform for Andy's whole "schtick."
I remember seeing this and thinking this guy has this unique twitchy goofy mania about him...if he can harness it somehow I bet he'd become fairly succesful on some sitcom someday... about 8 or so years later Kramer was born
I remember watching this as a 7 yr old in 1980 and laughing my ass off, it doesn't hold up very well though, I guess you need to either be a kid or high...
I vaguely remember watching one of the battle boy segments. I was 8 in 1980. That was me though. I had all the army men and I played with my brother and friends.
But don't you see? It was supposed to creep you out a little. That's how a lot of kids are. Little psychos with dreams of growing up to kill and conquer. When your understanding of war comes from playing war instead of actually being in a war, and there's no actual danger to yourself, then war can seem cool. Looking at Battle Boy, you just know he's going to grow up into the kind of guy that napes an entire village for kicks. Or else becomes a politician.
THis is the skit that my dad saw and told me I couldn’t watch this anymore.
I came to find this exact sketch cause I remembered it so clearly from when I was a teenager.
Watched this with friends while stationed in West Germany during the early 80's, What a blast!

I can see how he came to his Stanley spudousky charecter in uhf. Love his humor bettet than Kaufman. Also mark blankfield too.
The character was overly morbid, but otherwise: I completely agree.
I remember my friend telling me how funny this show was. Then I watched it and thought is wasn't. But I seen Melanie Chartoff, and was in love.
She was a Fox!😁
Man I remember this skit. When Seinfeld started I was Like...."Wait a minute...is that f@cking Battle Boy ?". Oh this is gonna be good :)
I was all, “that’s Stanley Spadowski!”
Fridays was awesome!! After a night of drinking got to watch this show

Same I was 10 that year. My Friday nights were Dukes of Hazzard/Hulk and later that night Friday’s
I loved the show “Fridays “. I wish it was still available somewhere.
All the episodes are on here - ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=fridays+tv+show
Thank you. I vaguely remember this one skit from when I was a kid.

The audience had Devo hats on, because this was Devo's first national show. They were the musical act.
Devo was the highlight of that night! Actually, SNL was Devo's first international show.
After I got a BB gun my little plastic army men didn’t stand a chance!😂 And damn Melanie Chartoff was hot!😻

Friday nights, after the local high school football game and a couple of doobies! Good times.
I was 12 when this came out. I remember a lot of it. Too funny.
Damn, this was my childhood
The great Michael Richards...comedic gold! Jerry... GOLD!
No. He is not funny actually
@@jmdi2703 He's very funny.
I get a kick out of Maryedith Burrell as the mother. ''You're gonna get the BELT!!!!" 6:18
I remember this scene from when it aired. Fantastic, thanks
This show was better than SNL in their hayday.
yea....sure bud
@@terrellp22 he's actually right. Around 1980 SNL was in the dumps.
That's not exactly a tall order because SNL sucked during the years Lorne Michaels wasn't there which was when Fridays was on.
I absolutly loved these skits and i want a atom blast tshirt now..😅😅
I was 12 in 1980 and watched this show on TV. Back when TV was good. Or so we all thought…..
40 years ago. Gosh. Unreal
Man I was soooo in love with Melanie Chartoff. yeah yeah yeah yeah.
I was a kid and loved this back in the day.

Best skit ever on Fridays.
I remember this show well I kinda thought it gave S N L competition.
I remember seeing this and thinking this guy has this unique twitchy goofy mania about him...if he can harness it somehow I bet he'd become fairly succesful on some sitcom someday...
about 8 or so years later Kramer was born

Tom Reynolds same thing here - remember laughing hysterically but not so much now
I vaguely remember watching one of the battle boy segments. I was 8 in 1980. That was me though. I had all the army men and I played with my brother and friends.

I hear a pinch of The Rug Rats in this scetch! That Mel chic was hot back then!= Mmmmmmm yummy!
Ever wonder why Gen X is so fucked up? Well, wonder no longer.
Never go full KID!
He reminds me of Stanley Spudowlski.
Never cared for that show but it was better than SNL was in 1980
F%cking hilarious!!!

The K man ☺
Odd as heck. My first time seeing it.

It’s the k man
Funny stuff! The whole cast was on coke obviously.
Be honest. Does anyone think this is funny? I think I kinda chuckled once, but mostly I cringed and was creeped out.

To each his/her own.

This wasn’t even a good ripoff of Saturday Night Live.
Geez 40 years later, this is not funny....
Neither is old SNL with a few exceptions. At the time I thought it was hilarious, but boys are easily amused.
@wordup897 the SNL that's even older than this is hilarious
Not funny at all!!! Seinfeld was phenomenal though
Holy crap that was bad
That was horrible.
I watched this when I was 12. That shit was lame then..lame now.
That isn't funny at all. Bad writers bad actors. Just bad all the way around.
not funny
Not
not funny. too bad.
