The ruins of Hohengeroldseck Castle are located on a hill between the Kinzig Valley and the Schutter Valley.
Walther von Geroldseck had the castle built in the period from 1240 to 1250. Under him, the Geroldseck family was at the zenith of its power. Even after his death in 1277, Hohengeroldseck was the ancestral castle and center of their dominion. This included the territories of Lahr, Mahlberg, Schiltach, as well as the monasteries of Schuttern and Ettenheimmünster. In addition, the bailiwick on both sides of the Rhine from Basel to Seltz also belonged to their possession.
In 1442, Margrave Jakob I of Baden bought half of the dominions of Lahr and Mahlberg from the Geroldseckers for 30,000 gulden.
In 1486 Count Palatine Philipp I, also called Philipp the Sincere, laid siege to the castle. After 6 weeks of bombardment, the castle was finally taken.
It remained in the possession of the Electoral Palatinate until 1534. After that, it seems to have been returned to the Lords of Geroldseck. They continued to occupy the castle until 1599, when they moved their seat to Dautenstein Castle in Seelbach.
After the death of Jakob von Hohengeroldseck in 1634, his daughter Anna Maria was the only heiress. Since he had no male heir, the Habsburgs considered the entire dominion to have reverted to them as a fief. And so Emperor Ferdinand II ignored the claims of the heiress. He had already promised the property to the militarily successful Count Adam Philipp XI von Kronberg. When he died in a campaign in 1634, his son Kraft Adolf Otto, who was still underage, was enfeoffed with the castle.
In 1689 French troops destroyed the castle in the course of the Palatinate War of Succession.
In 1692 Count Kraft Adolf Otto von Kronberg died. Since his four legitimate children had died before him, there were no legitimate heirs.
Anna Maria von Hohengeroldseck had married Margrave Friedrich V of Baden-Durach in 1644. And so Margrave Frederick Magnus revived the claim to the dominion of Hohengeroldseck inherited from his grandfather. He took possession of the lands half a year after the death of Count von Kronberg.
But again the Habsburgs had promised the dominion to someone else. Their choice was Karl Kasper Franz von der Leyen.
In 1695, the Austrian bailiff in Ortenau, Karl II von Neveu, sent a regiment of 300 men to the dominion of Hohengeroldseck. On his orders, the soldiers removed the Baden coats of arms, captured Dautenstein Castle and expelled the officials. The population was required to pay homage to Karl Kasper Franz von der Leyen. Since then, the castle ruins have belonged to the von der Leyen family.
Without the foreworks, the complex had an area of 95 by 50 meters. Along the 2.10 meter thick ring wall there was a battlement with embrasures. The two residential buildings erected on the rock were about 50 meters long and maximum 20 meters wide. They were separated by a courtyard. The facade of one of the buildings, that of the knight's house, is still largely preserved. On the second of the four floors, there was a knight's hall of 80 m2.
Since 1958, the castle ruins have been cared for by the Association for the Preservation of Hohengeroldseck Castle Ruins.

    Sehr interessante Reportage.

Ebenso an anderen Burgen.
