US 52 South - Fancy Gap Old Route - Hillsville to Mt. Airy, NC - Virginia - Highway Drive

A drive down US 52 south in Virginia. This is the old route that was used to get through Fancy Gap prior to I-77 being built near the area. Vehicles over 8 tons in weight are prohibited from using this route. Occasionally it is still used as a detour when conditions on I-77 make that route unusable.
This video begins on US 58 on the Hillsville bypass and exits onto US 52 to head through the unincorporated town of Fancy Gap, continuing on across the NC State Line and into Mt. Airy, North Carolina.

Drove north on 52 yesterday on my way to Ohio from Surfside Beach, SC. Can’t say that I enjoyed it, I’m used to the flat farm land of Ohio.

This Hwy goes past the Historic Allen house and Hillsville Courthouse where the famous shootout occurred in 1912.

I’m sure I’ve taken this road .I live in Illinois but my Dad and family are from this area. 52 was taken everywhere. My dad was Joyce Hawks.Sister Margie Hawks Lyon Johnson Collins.zRussell Hawks .

back in the day this is the way ya had to go to I-81; this was even before I-77 was built.

Much like NOVA, it’s obvious (Northern) NC has invested more in their highways.. Kinda embarrassing that SW VA hasn’t.

i have came north when i ran otr. but i heard there are truck that went off the road on the south side and they just never bothered to get them out. not true?

Beautiful drive, but it's much better in the daytime, like when you did it. NOT when it's dark, foggy, rainy/icy, or the driver is tired out (usually all of the above). Same for I-77 in that area.

I agree. I had to wait for the ideal weather conditions to drive up there and do these videos. I would be nervous to drive it at night or in inclement weather. I remember that huge pileup on 77 a few years back.
