I used to watch Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer (earlier Star Hustler) on PBS to get my fix of astromony news. Since his passing, this has become my new favorite source of space news. Keep up the good work NASA.

Comet Halley's obrital period has actually ranged between 75 and 79 years over the past 2,000 years of verifiable observations.

i saw it tonight! it took awhile for it to be dark enough. i was on a west facing slope at bonelli park overlooking los angeles and after 730pm i was able to see it through binoculars just left of the smiling crescent moon. barely visible, but it was there!

Yes but it also fades in brightness as it recedes.

  • @rocksnstars

Glad to see the twilight part was emphasized! For a comet to be fabulous (West, Hyakutake, Hale-Bopp) to the unaided eye, it has to be in a dark sky when it is bright, meaning it has to be far from the sun. It is unlikely that this one or ISON will do that. And the current prediction for ISON's brightest magnitude is -8, not the original -13, which is the brightness of the full moon. -8 is 1/100th as bright at -13.

The comet's orbit is such that it stays near the sun when it is brightest. That means the comet sets soon after the sun. The unaided eye view of a comet depends on two things: it's magnitude (brightness) and its distance from the sun in the sky. Just having the brightness alone doesn't tell you anything, which is why all the hype about ISON being as bright as the full moon is meaningless. If it does get anywhere close to that brightness, it will be almost touching the sun in the sky then.

    United States customary quantities FYI
Mile = the distance a human can walk in 1000 paces (2 steps) - also nearly the length of one minute of Latitude - which is exactly 1 nautical mile [1151 paces - walk on water]
Foot = the length of the human foot
Inch = the width of the human thumb
Yard = the distance of the outstretched arm to the nose or a Fathom = distance between both outstretched arms Pint,Peck,Pound etc they are human proportions for use in normal everyday human activities

I looked earlier this evening. I could not see it from Houston Texas. I could clearly see a great view of Mars, but I think it is too early for it now. Two to four more days from now will be the best chance of seeing it I think.

by the shape of its orbit, its eccentricity. Comet Halley's eccentricity is 0.967 and the period is 75.3 years. Ikeya-Zhang, the longest "short" period comet, has an eccentricity of 0.990098 and returns every 366 years. The Great Comet of 1680 has an eccentricity of 0.999986 and a period of approx 10,000 years PanSTARRS eccentricity is 1.00009, which means it will never come back, since an eccentricity greater than 1 is a hyperbolic orbit, not an ellipse, which implies it was not here before

Feel like a dumbass for asking but I've been searching all around and can't get detailed answer on..Why only after sunset? Are all comets only seen after sunset? I've seen some photos where they're nicely up in the sky all bright and such. Will it be brightest for everyone on March 10? I have zero understanding about comets, appreciate help.

"In early march the comet will pass about 100 million miles from Earth"
I'm very sorry but what is a 'mile' and why are you still using that in your education videos? The standard for scientific stuff is the metric system and not those old units from the last centuries. Such dated units (miles, foot, yards, acre etc..) are no longer used by people from the civilized world. Learn to use proper units. :)

Also number one in debt.Your only real number one position left, other than your military spending. Which wipes out any GDP claims.
Like saying your team has the best goal scorer. 3 goals a game. Leaving out, he lets in 10. USA has a lot of rich folks. But the average United Statian and his govt are broke. Or worse, up to yer eyeballs in debt.
How are you on infant mortality, and literacy?
    Oh, that's right, behind Cuba.
You are #1 in a-holes who mistakenly think you are #1.
    Your only #1, left.
