I used to watch Jack Horkheimer: Star Gazer (earlier Star Hustler) on PBS to get my fix of astromony news. Since his passing, this has become my new favorite source of space news. Keep up the good work NASA.
i saw it tonight! it took awhile for it to be dark enough. i was on a west facing slope at bonelli park overlooking los angeles and after 730pm i was able to see it through binoculars just left of the smiling crescent moon. barely visible, but it was there!
Glad to see the twilight part was emphasized! For a comet to be fabulous (West, Hyakutake, Hale-Bopp) to the unaided eye, it has to be in a dark sky when it is bright, meaning it has to be far from the sun. It is unlikely that this one or ISON will do that. And the current prediction for ISON's brightest magnitude is -8, not the original -13, which is the brightness of the full moon. -8 is 1/100th as bright at -13.
The comet's orbit is such that it stays near the sun when it is brightest. That means the comet sets soon after the sun. The unaided eye view of a comet depends on two things: it's magnitude (brightness) and its distance from the sun in the sky. Just having the brightness alone doesn't tell you anything, which is why all the hype about ISON being as bright as the full moon is meaningless. If it does get anywhere close to that brightness, it will be almost touching the sun in the sky then.
United States customary quantities FYI Mile = the distance a human can walk in 1000 paces (2 steps) - also nearly the length of one minute of Latitude - which is exactly 1 nautical mile [1151 paces - walk on water] Foot = the length of the human foot Inch = the width of the human thumb Yard = the distance of the outstretched arm to the nose or a Fathom = distance between both outstretched arms Pint,Peck,Pound etc they are human proportions for use in normal everyday human activities
I looked earlier this evening. I could not see it from Houston Texas. I could clearly see a great view of Mars, but I think it is too early for it now. Two to four more days from now will be the best chance of seeing it I think.
by the shape of its orbit, its eccentricity. Comet Halley's eccentricity is 0.967 and the period is 75.3 years. Ikeya-Zhang, the longest "short" period comet, has an eccentricity of 0.990098 and returns every 366 years. The Great Comet of 1680 has an eccentricity of 0.999986 and a period of approx 10,000 years PanSTARRS eccentricity is 1.00009, which means it will never come back, since an eccentricity greater than 1 is a hyperbolic orbit, not an ellipse, which implies it was not here before
At it's brightest it will not be far from the sun,it will be visible in the twilight after the sun has set, it will move higher into the night sky after a few days but will fade at the same time.
"panoramic telescope and rapid response system was designed to identify comets and asteroids and near earth objects that pose a threat to earth" There Is a threat to earth somewhere, clearly.
Feel like a dumbass for asking but I've been searching all around and can't get detailed answer on..Why only after sunset? Are all comets only seen after sunset? I've seen some photos where they're nicely up in the sky all bright and such. Will it be brightest for everyone on March 10? I have zero understanding about comets, appreciate help.
While skies finally cleared here in West Ohio I could not find it. Will try binoculars tonight if it stays clear. Should be between sun and moon tonight.
comets are not a rare phenomenon guys . comets appear on earth every 3.3 years .comets which appears to the observers on earth are called ENCKE . halley's comet is visible once in every 76 years .
"In early march the comet will pass about 100 million miles from Earth" I'm very sorry but what is a 'mile' and why are you still using that in your education videos? The standard for scientific stuff is the metric system and not those old units from the last centuries. Such dated units (miles, foot, yards, acre etc..) are no longer used by people from the civilized world. Learn to use proper units. :)
Also number one in debt.Your only real number one position left, other than your military spending. Which wipes out any GDP claims. Like saying your team has the best goal scorer. 3 goals a game. Leaving out, he lets in 10. USA has a lot of rich folks. But the average United Statian and his govt are broke. Or worse, up to yer eyeballs in debt. How are you on infant mortality, and literacy? Oh, that's right, behind Cuba. You are #1 in a-holes who mistakenly think you are #1. Your only #1, left.

EXCELLENT NARRATION, VERY GOOD PRESENTATION,!! MY STUDENTS AND FELLOW TEACHERS WISH TO CONGRATULATE NASA TEAM AND NARRATOR THAT MADE THIS VIDEO,
Comet Halley's obrital period has actually ranged between 75 and 79 years over the past 2,000 years of verifiable observations.
I'll be watching! Thanks Nasa!
i can NOT WAIT for ISON....i am so excited for it!
I feel so lucky this this awesome thing is happening a few hours before my birthday :D
I am looking forward to seeing this!
This is an invitation to see an artist theory on the physics of light and time!
Very interesting, nice graphics, hope for no clouds in the sky to see both comets
Ok! If you say so. Thanks for the response.
What about Comet Lemmon C/2012 F6 which is currently about mag +6?
It is motivative pace
Looks good from Calgary, Alberta.
Two in the same year! Cool.
i saw it tonight! it took awhile for it to be dark enough. i was on a west facing slope at bonelli park overlooking los angeles and after 730pm i was able to see it through binoculars just left of the smiling crescent moon. barely visible, but it was there!
THANKS
Yes but it also fades in brightness as it recedes.

on 15-16th mar 2013 I'll stay at Sapa, Lao Kai, Vietnam, can I see comet Pan-Starrs or not
Yes already visible in southern hemisphere...but not in the north until early March.
Its like visitors in their vessels have knocked comets our way whilst en route to us!!
Very informative video

hell ya !! can i see it in NYC?

thanks for the info :)
Will these comets be visible from Johannesburg South Africa?
That would be a good choice. But I imagine he's got a pretty full schedule these days.
Magneclear...thanks for relevant info re Northern hemis visability...Good clip from Nasa.

well said
if a comet hits, it won't matter how prepared you are.
and what about Comet Lemmon (C/2012 F6) ??? will it be visible to the naked eye? then it's 3 naked eye comets this year!
Thanks for the informative video. :)
voice reminds me of Commander laforge from star trek :P I wonder if it will be visible in western australia?
looks like 3rd magnitude and low in the sky thus a tough view
good video!!!
how do scientist know its this comets first visit? how they make sure which comet has been before and which one fist time
Is this visible from the north east usa

Why only twilight and not night time?
Come on March!!!
question:how often is the sun hit by astreroids, meterorites?
I can't wait to see how much support the Electric Comet and entire EU model gets after this year!
Can't see it From Manchester.
"panoramic telescope and rapid response system was designed to identify comets and asteroids and near earth objects that pose a threat to earth"
There Is a threat to earth somewhere, clearly.
LOL! Oort Cloud. One of my favorite modern fairy tales.
cant wait xx
they say two comets are going to clash in the sky.
Feel like a dumbass for asking but I've been searching all around and can't get detailed answer on..Why only after sunset? Are all comets only seen after sunset? If the universe were driven by chaos, we wouldn't be here.
What are you talking about Glenda? What part of there is a comet going to be visible to the naked eye soon, don't you get? It's true. Please indeed.
In a universe of order, chaos rules.
"This is Comet Pan-STARRS's first visit to the inner solar system..." I wonder what kicked it into the inner solar system for its first visit.
Nope. 100 million miles is a sufficient buffer. That's farther away from us than the sun.
Cool they got Kenneth from 30 rock to narrate
i was going to ask why NASA allows comments, but I decided it was for the entertainment value!
While skies finally cleared here in West Ohio I could not find it.
Will try binoculars tonight if it stays clear. Should be between sun and moon tonight.
Using Morgan Freeman as a narrator would run the risk
of viewers just thinking of Morgan Freeman, Morgan Freeman.
Its like visitors in their vessels, have k klll comets out
Google - Fall of a Thousand Suns- for a a cool site on comets listed chronologically by perihelion. All kinds of info, images, videos, etc.
glory
pretty sure its already been prepared
2 or 3 ? comet lemmon
Long live Nasa
I'm still waiting for Halley.
But there's no guarantee of that.
You guys should get morgan freeman to do the narrating
good
Is it a threat to earth?
22 viewers rated this science video hurt their brain
that mean "mars" SHAMMASH is positively charged, like the sun?
Yeah it was just a smudge. Too low in the horizon. Maybe tomorrow it will be better.
that wasnt a comet it was a meteor
Too cliche'. While I like Morgan Freeman just fine, I think the narrator for ScienceCast does a fine job.
Could be the celestial event that will signal full disclosure and mass landings. It's about time.
Who cares who is speaking....the whole thing is cool!
comets are not a rare phenomenon guys . comets appear on earth every 3.3 years .comets which appears to the observers on earth are called ENCKE . halley's comet is visible once in every 76 years .
cant wait for 2061
Coolies.
C - C - C - COMBO BREAKER ! ! !
I don't know, I was around for Haley's comet and it was a bust. Talk about anticlimactic.
I am reading Lucifer's Hammer about a comet that hits the earth and what follows.
It is strange watching this.
all this.... as nasa puts out prepper videos.... interesting....
Did we skip our meds today?
Neat
6th.... WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? LOL
...
Wormwood.
You listen to way too much Bon Jovi.
I prefer Neil Degrasse Tyson to narrate
hola el omar es frijolero
No - none at all.
"In early march the comet will pass about 100 million miles from Earth"

11th :p
Comets are bad...very bad.....be prepare ;) hahaahhahaa
