Excellent review; I enjoyed the puns and your comments about what people expect out of an action camera nowadays was on point. Really enjoying mine after upgrading from my 9 - well worth it. I wrote up a bit on reddit regarding the sensor and lenses, and after watching some of your segments I thought I might share it here too: 8:7 is full sensor mode. The lenses are just cropping parts out of that sensor image and doing different things with it. Hyperview takes the full 8:7 image and dynamically stretches it to 16:9. Superview takes a 4:3 image crop of the 8:7 and dynamically stretches that to 16:9. Wide and linear just take progressively more aggressive crops out of the 8:7 image to cut down on fisheye. You can do all of this in post right now, and is the big selling point of the camera. It is also why shooting in narrow (and linear, for the most part) never makes sense. You can always crop in post, but you can't add missing footage back in. Thus, better to record the max image available to you and scale it down as needed. An upcoming app update will allow lens changes after the fact, which will effectively just do all this cropping/adjustment for you. This mostly will be beneficial for Hyperview and Superview lenses, as they are unique to the GoPro algorithm. So instead of having a Hyperview or Superview video you are stuck with, you can shoot 8:7 and have the ability to crop it into whatever you want OR swap to Hyperview/Superview. So basically recording all three at once. I like hyperview for stationary POV (driving, riding), but for walking and general use the distortion is just too much IMO. I asked my wife to review some nature walk footage I shot in Hyperview; I thought it was ok since the trees kind of hid the distortion, but she immediately picked up on it. So unlike Superview where you can use it all the time, Hyperview is more niche IMO.

Fabulous Vlog.Thank you. Glad I found you. I just bought a GoPro 11 to go with my 9. I learned a great deal from watching your site. Also it seems you might be the last big supporter of GoPro. These last few days I've found nothing but criticism of GoPro in favour of Adventure 3.
I really love GoPros, honestly. My video about the Hero 10 sort of dives into to my history of using them over the past decade or so. They do get a lot of criticism, and while the cameras aren't perfect, they're by far my favorite action cameras to use. I genuinely have FUN using them. Although I do really like the Insta360 cameras for more specialized things like 360 video and stuff. As my channel has grown I've lucky enough to get to know some of the people from GoPro, I've found them to be incredibly nice and really just a bunch of nerds who love this stuff. That doesn't affect the product of course, but I like knowing the people behind it actually care.
Maybe you can give her the 7 as a peace offering? OR use the 11 to film a date night outing? 😁 I REALLY love the 7 and am still impressed by it, but the 11 will be a huge leap. The front screen alone makes a world of difference. And no more cages needed!
Hey Chadwicke! I talked about it a little bit in my Sony camera reviews, but it's super basic. I just use the default picture profile (PP Off) and shoot at 4K 24 in the S-AVC mode. I made a Final Cut Preset to boost a few of the colors. You can download it for free if you want: himynameistom.com/downloads
Thanks Tom :) do think saving a frame (as a picture) from video on Final Cut Pro will be the same resolution as saving a frame from video on the quik app?
It depends on the resolution of your Final Cut project- the exported still will match that. I've done 4K still exports and they look great. We even blew one up to a 20x30 canvas as a gift for family 😁
Seems perfect for my workflow. When I am on set shooting for a client I always want B-Roll of myself and my team without pulling out another full frame camera (in front of my client) with my Production Assistant shooting the staging area. I want to be discreet that I am filming the scene for BTS footage. The client is paying my company for the job, I want to be respectful of them and at the same time capture the BTS to add to my demo reel. Using the GoPro with the flex clamp attached around the room is a much better option than trying to capture the BTS with my cell phone or other full frame Sony camera.
One of my favorite things to do is mount the GoPro either on the camera's hot show or on an articulating arm that lets you get a view of the main camera your shooting, other behind the scenes stuff, and the subject. It's REALLY fun and also makes for some great time lapses (super fun to share on social media).
I have a question I have the 11 do i need a protective housing to take it out in the rain or to dunk it under water or can i do it without a protective housing case?
Starting with the Hero 5 you don’t need an additional housing, which is great. The only time to need anything extra is if you’re going to go beyond 10 meters/33 feet. 👍
The question is, how shockproof are these new cameras without a casing? With the old ones, if you gave it a beating, you could just replace the housing.
a major limitation of GoPro 11 black is no zooming facility while video recording . that is the main reason I am returning my gopro11 .hope its available in go pro 12 when its released in sept 2023 just 2 months to wait
Hi Tom, Thank you for your review. Could you please tell what it the quick capture performance (duration from pressing quick capture button to the start of recording)? Which camera performs better? Thanks
Looking through the modes, the options seem to vary a bit. There’s no 10-bit selection, but several of them have a “high” bitrate option (not the same thing as color depth, I know).
Do you know any sports camera like go pro that can shoot 4k 5k about 1000 -3000£ more and a hell of alot better sensor and low light ect...?? and also be around that same compact size, does'nt have to be water proof
I haven't! I've actually never used any of the DJI cameras, even though they seem pretty nifty. In reviews they never seem to look quite as good as the GoPro, but I think the 4 might be an exception to that. I'm definitely interested to see where GoPro goes from here, because the 11 is really really good.
Great video thank you. I love the highlight reels as well however I can almost never get the highlight reels to export. Almost always hangs up at about 80% exported. Have you had this problem?
thank you so much for this review very informative for a first time user of gopro, lucky i scored the gopro11 yey🎉 More videos and vlogss soon! Mabuhay!🇵🇭
It can do 2.7k 240 (like the 10 did). Not sure what the limitation is keeping it from 4K, but I’m sure there’s a reason- probably related to heat or reliability.
hi, newbie youtuber here in the Philippines. is 10bit necessary to consider if i can edit the 8bit color in post to catch up to 10bit and make the footage looks better? sorry for the noob question and my bad english=)
I don't think 10 bit is absolutely necessary, but it's definitely nice to have. Check out the sample footage I posted in the description (there's some 8 bit and 10 bit clips) and then you can see what you think. I think lighting conditions make a huge difference. A beautifully lit scene can look incredible at 8 bit, but a darker setting will be tougher to color correct.
I love your videos. I’ve been watching you for years. I totally disagree that the GoPro is perfect. However, it is very good if the lighting is perfect, that’s true. Unfortunately, if it’s not broad daylight on the beach or blinding snow, the image stabilization doesn’t work right it’s super grainy and unrecoverable and contrast. So much contrast.
I recently started filming with the GP11 and started a UA-cam channel for my son and I. Kind of a side project/hobby. I've only uploaded a few videos so far and unfortunately, they look terrible. I'm editing them with VideoProc Vlogger and exporting them in 4K which is what I shoot in. After the video is rendered, and I upload to UA-cam, the quality is completely lacking. My question is could it be the computer I'm using? It's a Gateway ($400 Walmart) laptop and completely underpowered. I understand that due to this, the rendering could take much longer than with an upgraded set up, however does it also impact the quality of the video? I don't care about speed, but the quality is important so I'm not sure what to do. Do I need to upgrade computer, and will that improve the quality of the video?
How do you edit 10-bit color? I have not found any software that can even play it. I have it on my Sony A1, but the files are un-playable. I tried using Davinci Resolve, but it would not play the files. What am I missing?
i would love to hear about the battery life when shooting at 5.3K, my HERO10 with the original battery won't last long underwater. will this enduro battery makes a difference?
Enduro should make bit of a difference, but probably nothing mind blowing. As is always the case with GoPros, it's probably just best to have a few batteries on hand.
GoPro rates it to -35 C. I live in the desert, so I never get to test that, but I think that means -25 should be safe, especially with the Enduro battery.
Not a fan. I use them on occasion. Everyone who is a ProConsumer (or above) should have a GoPro or a DJI Action (which I prefer) in the bag. I use (Hero 8 Black with the mediaKit) as a wide studio shot (Had to tape a ND filter to it...(the 10bit is nice I waiting on a DJI action with 10bit)
I was a huge dji fan until the Action 3. I own 16 DJI products. The focus issue is bad and some units develop a micro vibration after the firmware update as mine did. Here's the link I did on the Action 3 with some of the vibration. ua-cam.com/video/Sw2ykL5EpDY/v-deo.html
Does the Gopro 11 shut down after ~20min due to heating? The gopro 10 keeps shutting down due to overheating after 20mins - which is a waste of investment. Ambient temp ~18degC
Their one year product cycle is ridiculous (and I've got 45 of them, anything from the Hero 2 to the Hero 10 :) ) .... but 10-bit color is a nice upgrade.
I do wish companies would get off of the 1 year cycle and focus more on the "release a new product when there's truly a breakthrough" cycle. But I also have terrible business sense 😉
Those time lapse features are pretty cool. Buuuuut, I still feel like the 10 is pretty awesome. I really want them to come out with a Glasses camera. Total rewrite on their camera offering, but if anyone could knock it out of the park I bet GoPro can.
Definitely not something worth upgrading from the 10 for the most part, but still a REALLY fun update. I remember a lot of hype around Google Glass and then it seems like glasses cameras kind of...disappeared?
I'm having a ton of fun with it, and it's been great with my Sonys. Of course, how you plan to use it specifically probably makes a big difference in terms of whether or not it's right for you, but it's such a fun camera!
I don’t know, but if I had to make a very unscientific guess, maybe using the full sensor requires less processing power? Maybe “cropping” in and changing the resolution takes more power which generates more heat?
The Problem with the Auto Clear is you Clear the Films & Photos from your Card, Then if Something weird Happens on the Cloud and you Film gets messed up or Eliminated, you're Done. You want Redundant Back-ups so you never have to Worry. I'm Really not a Fan of the Cloud , Cause you don't know when something will erase or Damage some or All of Your Hard Work . You Also know, there is No Such thing as A Secure Site. All Sites are Vulnerable to Hacking. Plain & Simple.
For Everyone? -- I'm keeping my 10 being I don't have professional editing software that the 11 needs to get better videos than the 10. My editing software is iMovie and it only process up to 4K Max. My last video was 4K 60fps.
The 10 is wonderful, so no need to upgrade if it suits your needs. But just for the sake of clarity, iMovie can handle all of the frame rates and resolutions of both the 10 and 11.
@@tombuck I know being I've uploaded a variety frame rates. My last 4K 60fps video: my choices in resolution were 540p 60, 720p 60, 1080p 60 and 4K.being I shot in 60fps. Unlike Adobe Premiere Pro. iMovie is limited in to what one can do to improve their video.imovie raw, no color video editing here ua-cam.com/video/ZCnmhx6_VjQ/v-deo.html
Not for everyone. Only for those who shoot 4 to 6 min short b-roll movies. For the rest of us who need it for shooting amazing landscapes of 40 to 60 min routes from one city to another during a road trip mounted on windscreen or on an adventure motor cycle is useless. Best use is for sure to cook a meal on gopro during overheating!!! 🤣
I bought a super cheap Amazon “wanna-be go pro” that sports 4K, stabilization, and waterproofing for $42. Let’s just say I think a late 90’s flip phone camera is better. The stability is equivalent to the filming of the Blair Witch Project 😢
@@tombuck Curiosity killed the cat. Hopefully I saved you from your curiosity. Thank goodness the Shure SMB7 you reviewed is everything you said. Really expensive for me but worth every penny.

I've been using Final Cut Pro for years and it's never had any issues, especially with the M1 and newer computers.
i watched it all. Thanks man
Thank YOU! I know 30 minutes is a lot of time, so I really appreciate it 🙏
I am more curious what camera you used to record this video.
Sony FX3
i would love to hear about the battery life when shooting at 5.3K, my HERO10 with the original battery won't last long underwater. will this enduro battery makes a difference?
Enduro should make bit of a difference, but probably nothing mind blowing. As is always the case with GoPros, it's probably just best to have a few batteries on hand.
@@tombuck yeah probably. 5.3k in 60fps is a battery eater😁. i usually take a 10-30 second clip and the battert could only last maybe 45-an hour dive.
Hey Tom one question… what do you do to be cool on your studio? You use AC while you are recording??
Yeah, our house has really good A/C. We’re in the desert, so it’s a pretty big necessity. Fortunately it’s quiet too!
Can you run the Gopro Hero11 with external battery without insert the internal battery and would that address overheating in stationary use.
I don’t know what the overheating effect is, but yes, you can run it through an external USB source 👍
Can it handle tempetures around -25 C?
GoPro rates it to -35 C. I live in the desert, so I never get to test that, but I think that means -25 should be safe, especially with the Enduro battery.
want to have one but too expensive here for me 😁
i know the feeling, Aprilia !
Are you going to do this for the DJI Action 3?
I don't think so, but that could change. Seems pretty interesting from the reviews I've watched so far!
for the over heating i film myself on the go pro 11 on 5.3k 4:3 30 fps for 2 hours non stop with no over heating connected to a power bank..
I think they make ND filters for them? But hey, can't argue with the tape method!
Osmo Action 3 will get 10 bit via firmware update
@@tombuck Yeah I order one off Amazon but the 'mounting clip didn't account for using a Media Mod' so tape was the only option...
I was a huge dji fan until the Action 3. I own 16 DJI products. The focus issue is bad and some units develop a micro vibration after the firmware update as mine did. Here's the link I did on the Action 3 with some of the vibration.

Men, great Video! Thank you! You have my sub!
Thanks! Glad it was helpful!
By which camera r u shoot this video....?
This was the Sony FX3 👍
Can I go live to FB with this device? That would be great!
There's no direct live functions, but it does work as a USB webcam 👍
Does the Gopro 11 shut down after ~20min due to heating? The gopro 10 keeps shutting down due to overheating after 20mins - which is a waste of investment. Ambient temp ~18degC
Go Pro still not adding a zoom option, and that what’s sucks…
Whay a review! 👏🏼
In fairness, GoPro is one of the very few with a 1 year product cycle. DJI and Insta360 have 2 year product cycles.
Your dog is so awkwardly not knowing what you are doing. 😄
For the most part they’ve come to accept that I just run around them with these black boxes. 😁
Wait… I’m one of the everyone. Gettin’ it.
Woo hoo! We're all everyone! 🤯
It is really tempting camera. I am not doing a lot of action stuff but if I buy this I may lol XD its feels like worth it to mix with a7siii
I'm having a ton of fun with it, and it's been great with my Sonys. Of course, how you plan to use it specifically probably makes a big difference in terms of whether or not it's right for you, but it's such a fun camera!
Nice Vid.
The hero 7 is going to get the upgrade this year ❤😂😮 i love go pro 😊
Oh nice! This will be a very nice step up from the 7!
Wonderful sharing 😊 keep it up
Thank you Annie! I really appreciate it 🙏
Hi Tom how are you ?
Great to see you here!
yessss! you saved my lunchbreak Tom❤
Woo hoo! Glad we could have lunch together 😁
Rumors says that the next GoPro Hero would be called GoPro Hero 12 (insider information)
Ooh I’m going to need several credible sources on such an outlandish claim. 🧐
i wonder why recording 5.3k last longer than recording in 4k before shutting down...
I don’t know, but if I had to make a very unscientific guess, maybe using the full sensor requires less processing power? Maybe “cropping” in and changing the resolution takes more power which generates more heat?
If that is the case, shoot in 5.3k resolution much better
👌🏼👌🏼
Hi, please use GoPro as your studio camera and teach us all settings, and show us clear and clean results as your this video, regards

I notice your mic hanging in the picture juuuust a bit :-p
Haha, I usually leave it visible in the side shot just for fun. I like the "behind the scenes" look.
Great review! But I don't like the cheesy music 😝
I bought a super cheap Amazon “wanna-be go pro” that sports 4K, stabilization, and waterproofing for $42. Let’s just say I think a late 90’s flip phone camera is better. The stability is equivalent to the filming of the Blair Witch Project 😢
I’ve always been curious about those cameras! Sorry it didn’t outperform the flip phone 😁
@@tombuck Curiosity killed the cat. Hopefully I saved you from your curiosity. Thank goodness the Shure SMB7 you reviewed is everything you said. Really expensive for me but worth every penny.
I would choose the Osmo Action for the action that I need to go pro 😉
And to be honest I’d rather pick up my GoPro for photos then use my phone am I the only one
It’s a FUN camera that’s for sure.
@@tombuck oh yes
