This was awesome dawg! would love to see more like it. knowing your boy had a crowd behind him chanting the infamous wife pucker up. my god I lose it there
It's easy to get lost in competing and forget what's special about Melee so it was nice to get reminded of that watching this. Hope people who haven't played can get a little glimpse at it too.
What an incredible little video. Often times I see stuff about the history of the bigger competitive scene for Melee, but these stories were new to me - smaller, but still passionate. The interview about Slippi's usage in BH10 was something I haven't ever come across before; all I recall was the C&D letter and announcing its cancellation on twitter, and nothing beforehand. All in all, this was a nice watch.
There's a thing nobody is talking about, the game "feels" good to play, this falls in the field of sinestesics or "game feel" (there are books about this concept). When we play melee we forget we are pressing buttons and we feel like freaking kung fu master doing flying kicks, modern games feels clunky and unnatural to us, they have this weird disconnection between our mental state and the things we see on screen.
I'll say as someone who SUCKS at Melee, it still feels good to play, even against my friends who beat my ass. It always did, even back when I was a kid and we were doing Bob-omb/Proxy Mine dodgeball. The responsiveness as well as the intuition of the game itself once you get the basics, even outside of competitive play, are so rewarding. You feel like you earn every good play, even when fumbling. I love this game.
That first speaker is completely wrong. Sakurai intentionally left wavedashing in the game knowing it would be discovered and change the gameplay into a more competitive PFG. Teching was intentional. You can tech off ceilings and power shield. Platform cancel and airial interupt. All are intended mechanics.
45 minutes being a long drive for ` tournament puts into perspective just how far out of the way I live. I drive two hours one way to go to my local (which, tbf, is bi-weekly, not weekly)
I love old games that dont get updates, they always have the best communities, other great games like this would be street fighter 3 third strike, team fortress 2 (except its getting another update), titanfall 2, super naruto clash of ninja, marvel vs capcom 2 and 3, minecraft 1.8 lol, and a bunch of other discord fighters and obscure mmorpg's, I love games that dont need constant weekly updates to have fun with, honestly I partially hate some major updates if they change things to much, thats why I dont like fortnite as much its not the same game that it was in season 4, but I do like sequals because I can go back and play the old games I like, which is why I will not give a cent to overwatch 2 because I cant buy overwatch 1 and try it for the first time, anyway sorry for ending the comment with a complaint lol god bless you all and have a great day
I only play online and yes Melee is the best one. But we need to stop this myth that Brawl is somehow easy. Anyone who’s played Brawl in any sort of competitive fashion knows that it is insanely hard. Just because it’s slower doesn’t make it bad.
2:50 Its no where near 1 to 1 but tekken has a crazy deep movement system with sidesteping, korean backdashing and wavedashing (I heard smash players say the term wavedashing came from tekken and tekken players saying it came from smash lol, im 80% sure tekken used it first, and then I got some bozos saying rocket league invented it) in my opinion its very comparable to melee but much more grounded, I wish more people would play traditional fighting games they are very similar to platform fighters when it comes down to the depth, thats why I always call platform fighters a sub genre of 2d fighters because it very much is a fighting game
@@Splozy cool, I remember hearing a marvel player saying its from tekken before but Im just ganna take your word for it cause I have been very confused asking around on reddit and discord servers lol
0:16 - that is demonstrably false. they literally knew about wavedashing and L-cancelling before the game was released, so they definitely knew about the competitive potential of the game. 0:29 - ehhh......definitely true for brawl and smash 4 kinda, but definitely not for ultimate. ultimate is very competitive, just not in the same way as melee. 0:37 - this sounds very "mango-fan"-esque, and is very cringey. movement options for stylistic purposes only really work at mid-level play or really where di and sdi havent been mastered or even implemented yet. definitely doesnt break the game.....at all. input strings to perform unique movement options is not unique to melee.....like literally not even close. he makes it sound like wavedashing is this broken option that just lets you win, but its just another movement option? like it has its benefits, but it has its weaknesses too. 2:00 definitely true back before slippi, but nowadays id argue its easier than it has ever been to get into melee. 2:24 youve played this game for that long and havent figured out that wavedashing isnt broken? 🤔 2:50 now THAT i can agree to, but only in the sense that its definitely my favorite game; i wouldnt go so far as to make a blanket/objective statement about it being the best game ever, because many would disagree. 3:48 this clip is ok, but if you look at the falcos di it also shows how little skill his opponent had, which is just as important when determining whether or not a combo was actually "good". 6:15 oh THATS why :p no hard feelings? overall, not too bad 7.5/10, not the best start, but at least it finished strong, couldve been way longer and couldve interviewed more people.
Not only did they know about wavedashing and L-cancelling, L-cancelling was legit intentionally coded in (and was in Smash 64 under a different name), as were phantom hits
Fun stuff, thanks for making this. I love hearing local stories and people I don't know but can still relate to describing what Melee means to them
thank you for fucking up zain

I had Fives on my podcast a while ago to talk about Melee and let me just say Fives YOU ARE SO WELL SPOKEN GREAT JOB IN THIS VIDEO!!!
