I've been helping in a food pantry in Central Illinois for 11 years we get a lot of meat donated by Walmart we usually have 9 to 10 full size freezers full
It seems like fridges from the 70s 80s and 90s will outlive us... but are so electricity hungry. But the new ones have problems so quickly, like they are designed for todays throwaway society. I hope your fix works out.
Definitely, the older ones seem to go forever, but they just pull toooooo much power :S. Hopefully emptying it, cleaning all the seals, letting it sit off for a day or two and it will work again! FX!
Nyssa, you sound like you have a lot on your mind, working out a lot of things, hopefully not stressing yourself. As long as it doesn’t leak inside anymore it doesn’t matter how it looks as long as it’s functional 😊, and it’s nice seeing out the back yard, bush/trees/whatever doesn’t matter it’s yours that’s all that’s important. Take care of yourself and get well soon.
I love your rambling.. When I take my youngest to bed I watch UA-cam while she falls asleep and I always chose to watch your videos if there is a new one (coz I’ve watched them all). I applaud your honesty and realism. I am also going to make my own sour dough starter to try your focaccia recipe.
You are a wonder of knowledge Nyssa!!! Half of most people do not even know anything about solar... Well done with the information about your Jackery.. Love watching anything you post..❤ ❤️
We love baby corn in stir fry...yum! I had to dish out $1400.00 this past week for plumbing. I needed a new toilet so I got a comfort toilet (sits higher) so it's easier for me to get up off it, a couple of pipes were leaking, my sink sprayer broke, a new garbage disposal, shower faucets were leaking and a new bathroom faucet set (it's so pretty and it's $159.00 (looked it up) but he sold it to me for $20.00 since I had so much work done).
That's the problem with projects too, once you start them you realise there's so much more to them lol and more expense! Yay for a higher toilet, we did the same when we upgraded from our box composter to the pedestal one, it took me a while to get used to! I think from all the comments the plan will be to map out some meals for a few days that all have the baby corn in it so I can just use the whole can up hehe!
With the cucumbers if you don’t eat the skin you can peel it off steep it in water for 5 days then use that mineral rich water on your veggie plants to help them grow
Greetings from Finland! Love your videos❤! I've noticed that you use cabbage often. In Finland we have traditional (comfort) food Gabbage Casserole. Here' s the recipe if you wanna try it. The easiest way is to use a slow cooker but you can use a regular oven as well. There are some variations in the way this dish is prepared and what ingredients are used, but basically gabbage is the main ingredient. I don't have slow cooker oven or Wood stove works just fine😊 1 large head cabbage 1 onion 700 g lean ground beef 1,5 dl oat and rice mix (or short-grain rice) 2-3 tsp marjoram salt 1 beef bouillon cube 1 l water a few cubes of butter (or bacon or other fat) about ½ dl molasses Shred the onion and cabbage. Cut the core out of the cabbage. Fry the beef. Season with salt. Stir together the cabbage, onion, rice and meat and pour in a slow cooker (or in a large oven dish with a lid). Pour on top the water and crumble the bouillon cube. Drop dollops of butter on top and run some syrup on top of the casserole. Turn the slow cooker in high (2/2) and let cook for about 5 to 6 hours. Alternatively, put in regular oven in low heat and let cook for several hours.
Iam so jealous of your hamper hauls. We don’t get stuff that good in the USA. The local pantry’s donate more packaged goods than fresh. They help people that need the help and I understand that. But fresh produce etc would be so much better/healthier for people. However, they basically only get pre packaged goods donated to them to be able to disperse and there is never any kind of real meat for people. I have been wondering how we as a country could rectify the issue since watching your hauls. Great chat! I always enjoy hearing from you and watching your progress and growth. I hope you get to feeling better. I live with chronic pain as well, it’s no fun.
I am very grateful that the majority of the food is within that 'single ingredient' scope, there's always a few packaged things but the kids love that as a treat, but all the produce and stuff is superb! :D
Lovely produce again in the hamper Nyssa, such a great deal for that alone! Thanks for sharing, always love seeing what you get. Have you considered making your own butter with all the cream perhaps? Lots of yummy treats this month too - bet the kids were happy to see! Hope you manage to sort something out with the fridge situation in the meantime while converting the trailer to make your life easier. Sounds super cold out your way, hope it warms up a bit and you have a good week😊
I may make myself some butter! I did contemplate it, but I'm the only one who eats it, but hey, fresh made butter for just myself, not such a bad thing hehe :D
Looks like a good haul. Sorry to hear you were having bad day hope you are feeling better and your cold will disappear. You guys have a lot on your plate but, you will get there one day at a time. TFS!!❤🐿️😊
Thank you :D. hehe, the kids adore the bits and pieces, though they have no restraint and go through them pretty quick! Darryl grabbed me some of the ferrero's as well heh.
Had any rain out your way Nyssa? The last 'forecasted' rain event was all hype, no action here 🙄 Ended up with around 25ml all up, and pushed the tank back up around 2/3 full, so a reasonable buffer and dampened the soil. I was relieved to hear you are on the ibc stash, managed to access a good source of clean ones, ( only had vinegar in them) for a good price and building up a bank of them under the house as gravity fed reserves for the garden... covers were cheap so can keep down the algae growth in summer. Great haul from the community pantry again, the baby corn- me personally, i'd divide the two cans into family portions and re-can them... 🤷♀️ i see cucumber relish and pickles in your future 😂 The Gordian knot of refrigerators... 🥴 need one asap, but the cost comes out of a coolroom budget, but the coolroom will solve the fridge problem, but you need one now and delayed gratification won't work in this instance because needs must, now. 🙄 i swear it the electronics... a feaking kero fridge would solve every problem, but the cubic volume is too small, and kero is too freaking expensive. underground cold store is great, however the earthworks and depth you'd have to go for all year round ambient temp is prohibitive when you need a freaken weather tight home! hang in there, you are all doing a great job inching forward. ❤️
We only got 7.2mm and only one day of rain even though a whole week had been forecast! I think I got so many recipe suggestions I might just plan a few of them in a row and use the tin up all at once! :D Need to make some pickles, quite a few of the kids like them! But Apollo did request rice paper rolls today because of the cucumber, and maybe we'll do sushi tomorrow! Its so frustrating lol, spending money now when I want to spend it later and on and on! :D Yeah, there's gas fridges too but gas is super expensive and harder to get these days (Swap and go's are nearly non existent in our town atm). The earthworks are far out of budget, we'd prefer to spend that kind of money on a bore or something!
Hi honey. Firstly, May I say, you are amazing at managing your pain. I don’t know how you do what you do with the amount of pain you must be in! I have MS and I have to push myself everyday just to look after myself and Hubby. Secondly, the baby corn can be used stir frys. The kids would probably eat them raw, serve them warm as a side dish. They also freeze well. Sending my love.
Thank you Theresa! I think that I have been given so many ideas with the corn that I will make a few diff meals in a row using them so that I use up the tin over a couple of days! :D
Thank you Nyssa. I'm sorry that the fridge thing is still going on. 😢 craziness.... Great job on the cart re-bottoming. It's funny I was looking at those not too long ago. Seems like they would have so many uses, like getting groceries to the house. 😊. On the can of baby corn could you maybe toss some little corn cobs into the delicious noodles that you make? Yeah! 16 years old. One of my grand daughters turned 16 last week. It is a big thing! I hope things get less frustrating soon and fall into place. You are great parents!
Chin up, You are wonderful and impressive. I am sure you and Daryl will conquer each and every project well together. I look forward to the hamper hauls to see just what you get and more impressed with how you take care of it. Sounds like an incredible 16th birthday present for a young girl. I hope she has fun with her Dad. P.S. I would get the fridge. Good day from the US of A.
Thank you Leah! Yes, I think we'll have to bite the bullet on a fridge at least for the moment, I think we'll be left with no other alternative. But it sucks lol!
I think the plan is going to have to be to plan a few meals in a run that need them! so I can use the whole can up rather than having to do anything with it hehe.
A pain day for you yesterday. Glad you took care of yourself!!! Thanks for the Sunday chat, the hamper haul. Looking forward to your website but take your time. What a big bummer you are having refrigerator problems. Take care, see you next time Nyssa.
I was chatting with Lilli yesterday about Surreal, we were going through old photos of them both and yeah, both 16 this year, Lilli isnt sure what she wants to do, but Comicon sounds amazing.
Surreal's behaviour will have to pick up a bit for her to end up there lol. Tickets have been bought and hotel booked and costumes in the works, but man, the attitude!
House projects are so expensive now and there is a never-ending list. I need a storm door and it will be $500 CAD … plus the weatherstripping and doorknob/lock for another $150 or so. And installation, since I can’t do it myself. Sigh. It’s just a darn door! So I feel your pain but the projects will get done, one way or another. 🤞🏻
Nyssa, make sure you keep the cart under shelter as the bits where the sides go in will rust and disintegrate. I have one and it is so handy around our property (without the sides 🙂)
Hi Nyssa. Lloyds auctions often have insulated panels of varying thickness being auctioned. Either at the Gold Coast or Brisbane. When they come up they usually aren’t too expensive. They might be good for your trailer set up. I always enjoy your content. Lisa.
I've been keeping an eye out, grays auctions too and marketplace and gumtree, but I haven't been in a position to go fetch anything as yet! hopefully I'll find something that works in the timing I need hehe, thank you LIsa :)
I apologize ahead of time if this doesn't pertain to your fridge. Here in the states our refrigerators have freon in them for cooling and they can get leaks in the system. When that happens, they don't cool as well or at all. Thought maybe yours had that type of system in them and the fix would just be a leak repair and refill. Good luck with figuring it out.
I believe the refrigerant in these is a sealed unit R13a or something along those lines (don't quote me on that name!) but we will definitely have a good look over the fridge, it is just a matter of getting it all emptied and cleaned and off so we can go over it! FX for something simple!
It’s so frustrating when appliances don’t want to work right! My vacuum quit working the other day and it’s not a fridge but I’d like to vacuum…. For some reason like everything else they are so expensive and just don’t last.
Yeah, things just don't have long lives! The old old fridges run forever but they have high power draws, the new ones just don't last as long. And vacuums, man the amount of vacuums we've been through!
Myself, I am exactly like you.......I work at a retirement home, so I put on a happy, comfortable persona, and I truly love what I do, but when I get home that is my safety blanket where I don't interact with anyone except my husband and son. I don't like leaving my home.
Heh, I quite literally only leave every 6 weeks for the groceries, and whilst I somewhat enjoy the perks of being in society again and visiting mum, (and maybe a bit of distance from the kids for a few days lol) I don't miss leaving! that 6 weeks rolls around awfully quickly!
Good job on the cart looks great, fridges freezers, and might I say dishwashers aren't made like they used to be, I bought a fp dishwasher a year ago it's shocking falling apart bad design grrr anyway I hope you get sorted and find decent appliances stay well Nyssa xx
Yes, and these are all 5+ years old and have lived under cover but outside their entire lives, it is possible they're just dying on us, but its very frustrating for the cost!
Not a bad haul there again! Its lovely to live in a community instead of the city! We have the best neighbours now! Do you have magnesium baths for your pain? You are an inspiration
We don't have a bathtub atm, but I definitely like magnesium balms for joints etc! definitely works wonders! It was mainly my face playing up yesterday, and I haven't really found anything that helps with that, I just curled up with a beanie and a blanket for most of the day keeping it warm and covered and tried to lose myself in a book :D
Yeah...my wish list of $$ things is getting out of hand also. Sometimes it seems like i make progress on the list, and i can schedule it all out, and then snap snap, what the heck?!, it all gets piled unmanagably up again. Life!
Hi Nyssa🥰 I love Hamper Day🎉🎉🎉 looks like a great one!!!! A good lot of chicken, great produce & the token dunny roll. The small cartons of cream are perfect for you to use as single serves when you want it. I hope your pain has eased of now. Does comfrey or anything help with the pain? I know I can’t send you a bunch of leaves but I could make you a comfrey salve to give a go if it helps. Lovely to hear the roosters in the background! Have a great week 🥰
I haven't found much helps really, I spent most of the morning just lying in bed reading with my beanie on and a nice soft warm fluffy blanket over half my face lol. It was the most comfortable spot. Heat does help for me, but not for others, so maybe I need to try a warming salve of some sort! I have some infused comfrey oil and calendula oil waiting to be turned into something! I do need to pull it out of the cupboard to use!
@@OurSmallFootprint Thank goodness the warmth from you beanie & cosy blanket help a bit. It maybe worth a try with the comfrey, I use a salve I make up on my knees & ankles when I’ve walked too much & it works wonders. Other than that I just feed the comfrey leaves to the chooks 😂 Forgot to ask is Daryl going to dress up for Comic-con? It’s become really popular here in Melbourne, tickets sell out in a flash!
We're going to get it all turned off, pull it all out and give a good clean of everything, hopefully something helps! but they are sitting on decking timber with ventilation etc, so I wouldn't think it was an issue, we shall see though! :D
Could you turn the corn into Mexican style street corn skillets? I love street corn and you can use canned corn. Might work. Love the chicken backups:)
Oooh, that could be an idea, I'm going to have to open the can and see what sort of size the pieces are but that would definitely be yum and the kids love creamed corn too (as in the corn kernels in the creamy white sauce) so maybe I can do that with some. Corn chowder has been suggested too! Yum Yum!
I thought I would ask since you mentioned you have 20 acres what type of wildlife do you have on your property? My husband is an avid deer and Turkey hunter and I wasn’t sure if you had that type of wildlife out where you live. We are in the midwestern area of America.
Nothing much on ours, Kangaroos/wallabies occasionally, and wild dogs are pretty much it. Our area is pretty barren, lots of scraggly/drought resistant bush but not much else unfortunately! If we had of had the funds and choice, we probably would have bought somewhere with a little bit better soil/rainfall/weather, but at the same time, we're happy here :D
I was looking at some but I think the power draw would be too high. Though I could have one instead of the two I have. But they looked like 3-4kwh per 24h to run, which is quite high
Definitely, but its a huge tin, like more than a meal tin! lol, and I have two of them, so I probably just need to make a few meals in a row it will work with! :D
@@OurSmallFootprint also chicken and corn soup? Possible canning? 🤷 and yes the cold is here for a week! I’m cold at lower end of Redland Bay! Apparently snow is possible around the snow region of the state too
@@OurSmallFootprint I use a #10 can (not sure what that equates to for you but it's about the equivalent of 8 regular cans here in the US) to make Corn Chowder in the winter. I don't really have a recipe but I use chicken broth, onion, garlic, diced potato if I have them, sometimes chunks of ham or chicken, the corn. I've made it without milk and just thickened the broth and it was still yummy.
I've been helping in a food pantry in Central Illinois for 11 years we get a lot of meat donated by Walmart we usually have 9 to 10 full size freezers full

Thank you! That’s helpful information!
I’ve never heard of that! Great information! Thanks!
Thanks for sharing. Hope you feel better, take some time for yourself

Yeah, things just don't have long lives! The old old fridges run forever but they have high power draws, the new ones just don't last as long.
And vacuums, man the amount of vacuums we've been through!
I see a lot of okonominyaki in your future!!! Lucky girl!
Lucky we love it so much! :D
Do take very good care of yourself.
Thank you Virginia, I definitely am having a few quiet days :)
Life!
Yop! Put money away and then something else pops up and ‘steals’ it hehe
Those cuke cumbers make pickles 🥒 my favorite way to get them to last . An apple pies with the apples. 😂❤
I definitely need to make some pickles, quite a few of the kids like them! :D
Good hamper!
Very much appreciated :D
Great video thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching! :D
Other than that I just feed the comfrey leaves to the chooks 😂
Forgot to ask is Daryl going to dress up for Comic-con? It’s become really popular here in Melbourne, tickets sell out in a flash!
@@karenlauder9768 I think he was going to, but at the same time it’s a lot of effort lol.
Thats a good bit of food.
It's fantastic, such a wonderful service to be able to access!
My first thought with your refrigerator problem is have you vacuumed the coils under the refrigerator? If not that could help.😊
We're going to get it all turned off, pull it all out and give a good clean of everything, hopefully something helps! but they are sitting on decking timber with ventilation etc, so I wouldn't think it was an issue, we shall see though! :D
Thank you, Nyssa.
You're welcome 😊
Nice to hear the 🐓🐓serenading u 😉
tinned baby corn is really good in stirfrys
Yes! But it’s a huge tin, I’m not sure if I could freeze or re can the extras.
@@OurSmallFootprint chicken and corn soup or a laksa
@@outbackchick5111 the answer might be planning meals for a few days that need it so I can use the can up!
I love seeing the other Aberdeens around the world. I’m in Aberdeen, Washington in the United States. Home of Kurt Cobain of Nirvana.
It's always kinda amazing to think of the multitude of places that exist in different places with the same names! its really neat :D
I am in Aberdeen Scotland

Have you ever thought about buying those industrial fridges? Not sure on costs just an idea
I was looking at some but I think the power draw would be too high. Though I could have one instead of the two I have. But they looked like 3-4kwh per 24h to run, which is quite high
Another great video..regards
Thank you Karolyn :D
Luv to know where these food banks are???
Whereabouts are you ? Which city/state ?
@@OurSmallFootprint Vic Frankston
Is there a way I can pay you via PayPal please???
Drop me a line on Insta or Facebook is the best bet if you are after something :)
Baby corn and chicken fried rice??
@@CrazyGrandmaWeaz I think these are about the equivalent of no.10s same sort of size as the big tins of diced tomatoes I buy!
