I think as you get older we all can relate to Jon being devastated by losing something or leaving somewhere you REALLY loved and felt comfortable, then later you look back realizing the path made perfect sense and just being grateful for the whole journey
His character was memorable, his arc was impactful to the story, his death was a pivotal moment for the story that we still talk about to this day. I dont think as an actor you could ask for anything more. Yeah longevity is awesome because as artists we live job to job. But we also rarely get the chance to be memorable.
He is the biggest actor to come from that show because he wasn't dragged on like so many of the characters on that show are. People will remember him for more than TWD. It's hard to say the same for some of those actors that are still doing it.
Yeah he may be. Many others have done really well outside TWD too though. Sonequa Martin Green (star trek), Danai Gurira (black panther/avengers), Michael Rooker (guardians of the Galaxy), just to name a few.
Bernthal's story about wanting to go and say goodbye and just watching them crack on without him is really relateable to me right now, having just left my first real job which was bartending. Obviously they are two different jobs, acting and hospitality and two different worlds, but I identified with that feeling of suddenly realising that now youre back on the outside. When you work at a place for a significant period of time, especially your first proper job you get it into your head that you are sort of indispensible, and one of the family. The people you see everyday for a good long while, for better or worse they become your whole world. You make friends there. Maybe you find yourself with a little workplace crush. You become embroiled in the drama and the banter and the workload and that becomes your identity. And then when you leave everyone is really sad and its all hugs and goodbyes and "make sure you come back to visit!" and you become convinced that this place won't be the same without you and that you've left a mark that was as significant as the mark it left on you. But then when you do go back, you see that life goes on and people are keeping on at the job without you. Maybe you go back after a week and people are happy to see you and say they miss you, but now youre a guy who USED to work here. Youre not really one of the crew anymore and that can be a pretty tough pill to swallow.
It's says so much about who Jon Bernthal as a person, not even taking into account what a great actor he is, to react this way after his time on TWD was over. To have this much appreciation for the experience and co actors who are now life long friends speaks volumes of his character and sense of perspective. How many of us grunts and nobody's would respond to getting written off, fired in a sense, would react this way? When you hate a character in a film that much you have to realize how powerful their acting is. Much like Dwight Yokum in sling blade. Every person who saw that movie wanted to personally do what Billy Bob did.
I had a somewhat unhealthy obsession with The Walking Dead series. Perhaps, I still do. 😉 I remember watching episode one, season one around the time the show premiered, and just becoming captivated by the qualities of the production. I never read the comics or knew that the show was based on such a written work, initially. Even so, I anticipated it would be around a long time, because of how good the qualities of the production were. I'm glad that there are plenty of episodes to enjoy. One of the best tv series ever.
The show is still amazing but you can’t deny how untouchable those early years are. And we’re so thankful for Jon being a part of it and playing a legendary character so perfectly!
Damn, he is so eloquent and down to earth when he speaks, you expect that gruff aggressive voice from his characters. Love that guy and all his work. Reminds me of Galdolfini when he's not in character as Tony.
Everybody became Shane in the show. He was ahead of the curve and he was the most impactful character and the show just isn't the same without him. Glad Jon's career took off since he left. He was great in The Pacific as Manny, as Brad in The Wolf of Wall Street, Grady in Fury, Braxton in The Accountant and of course, The Punisher.
@@okaeT Season 2 was good too. The first half is a little slow but has some great character moments. Second half really picks up and is among peak walking dead stretches imo
Imo season 1-3 were all pretty decent same with the first half of season 4 but after that the pacing is just god awful. Plus they wasted most of their season budget on the prison battle with the Governor so the next 8 episodes were characters walking around in the woods. S 5 tho made up for it I guess most of those episodes were really good
I loved jon as the punisher he was born to play Frank and that's the reason that i start watching walking dead because some people said he's character in TWD is kinda like Frank and now I'm at walking dead season 11
Crazy how this pops up after I’ve been rewatching the Walking Dead. What a time for TV when that was going on, say what you want how it turned out towards the end and it’s popularity not being the same but you can never deny the awesome ride it gave us all.
I never do this, either before or after TWD, but I used to watch the episodes twice if they were the good ones, in the first three seasons. The show was good until S6, but I never did that after S3. I recently started watching S9 after I quit in S7 (S8x01 was last I watched, so I picked up at the end of that season.) S9 is actually pretty good even after Rick left and feels more grounded even though it's way more scifi, which is weird. I said I was just going to watch it until Rick left, but now I find myself enjoying it again. Maybe I'm just desperate for something to watch, but I'm enjoying TWD for the first time in seven years. It will never be as good as those first three seasons though, but I missed this universe for some reason. Darabont just set up such an interesting universe, it's too bad AMC almost killed it. If HBO (pre-2010 HBO) had produced this show, it would've been one of the best ever made.@@buffnipz
I would have wrote it so that during their confrontation In that field outside Hershel's they mess each other up pretty bad; Shane eventually gets the upper hand on Rick and is about to kill him but stops when he realizes Carl is there. The three of them exchange looks in silence for a moment before Shane drops his weapon and walks off heavily wounded into the woods and they don't see him again... Until Season 8 where he shows up as an outpost leader for the Saviors.
Shane was ahead of his time. While everyone else in the group thought he was an animal he showed you had to be cutthroat to survive. Something everyone else who lived developed.
@@haydeng3541 Rick talked him down, you could see in Shane’s eyes he regrets what he was doing for that second of time, Rick doesn’t give him a chance to atone.
Shane's death was planned from the beginning of the show. It was a great arc, perfect timing. While I loved Shane, he left at the right time and his death made sense and the character was complete. Better than so many other TWD characters that stayed on way too long and became stale or just had arcs that just kept going in circles.
I disagree slightly. I do think Shane’s arc with Ricks group was complete but I don’t think I would’ve wrote Jon Bernthal off the show entirely , would’ve kept that end open. I think Carl or Rick shoots him and we are led to believe he died but didn’t. I would’ve loved for Shane to go off and get his own spin-off instead of Fear the walking dead. Would’ve been incredible television
Saw Jon in The Bear recently. Such a solid dude. That show is packed of stellar performers and Jon fits right in. What a thing to watch good people succeed.
Jon Bernthal is an amazing actor. He played Shane brilliantly and Shane wasn't an easy character to play. Shane was there only for two seasons but he is still one of the best characters in the show!
I never watched the walking dead and as an outsider I think it was wonderful for him because the opinion I saw about the show peaked some time after he left and then declined a bit now so leaving before the peak setting the peak up was like getting credit for the greatness of the show without working there anymore and not taking any damage from any possible decline because you're not there anymore
I really missed and still miss his character on the show. While he was on the show he was the most noticeable character. After he left Daryl became my favorite character.
While it was sad to see him go after just Season 1, the man literally became and defined a whole new generation of The Punisher right after. Had he been tied up with the scheduling for TWD, he would have never been able to do it. And he's starred in a total of 16 other projects after TWD. Might not be a Movie A-star, but he has earned so much respect from his fans.
he is way better than most A-stars & he isn't full of that woke nonsense he just has a lot of common sense & innate decency he would make a great role model for his kids - he is what I term a fully rounded fully souled human being
Y'know, for a character that managed to outlive his comic counterpart if only for Two Season's; Shane has still remained as one of the best, most memorable characters in the shows running. He was adapted to the world long before the others. Rick eventually became what Shane already was, but nobody in the group was willing to acknowledge that.
One thing Jon can walk away knowing is he was in my opinion the best actor on that show, and that's saying a lot because everyone is incredible. But when he died, something died along with the show. He can walk away knowing he did a great job, genuinely.
Well T W D was still his first big break as he realizes now and is what allowed him to show off his acting skills before moving onto much bigger and better things
My favorite thing about The Walking Dead is that you are able to feel the love between the main cast members, it makes the show feel like an authentic experience. Jon was an amazing Shane.
He was a pressure cooker of emotion, but Shane talked a lot of sense. Pretty much dead already was one of my favourite episodes and Jon was incredible in that ep. I was totally on his side come the end of it, he’s intense but he was spot on.
I remember not liking Shane as a character when I first watched The Walking Dead, now when I go back I've grown to love Shane and always admired Jon's acting. It's a shame they didn't keep him around for long, he'd have been amazing in the rest of the seasons along with Norman.
Everyone says "Shane was the antagonist of season 2", but the real antagonist of season 2 was LORI. She drew a wedge between Rick & Shane, destroying their bond. She sewed the seeds of Shane's destruction. #TheWalkingDead #TWD
the character lasted 2 seasons and is still talked about as one of the best characters in TWD even After 11 seasons of TWD 8 Seasons of Fear 6 episodes X3 spin offs ...Shane is still one of the best characters in the show.
Shane's presence was missed in the show for the next 5 seasons after he was killed off. It's a testament to the actor because Shane didn't last nearly as long in the comic
seasons 3-6 are still very good just the show had another vibe with the shane-rick leadership conflict. Shane ended up being right in his way of living to survive but he was cruel and extreme in the way he presented himself, even betraying Otis. I think he was right with the “enough” barn scene. That showed just how ahead and isolated he was from the group.

@@AxelAlexK Stephen Yuen as well.
I just love his perspective on things.
I remember watching episode one, season one around the time the show premiered, and just becoming captivated by the qualities of the production. I never read the comics or knew that the show was based on such a written work, initially. Even so, I anticipated it would be around a long time, because of how good the qualities of the production were. I'm glad that there are plenty of episodes to enjoy.
One of the best tv series ever.
He said fleed instead of fled and now, weeped instead of wept. And I'm here for it!
👏🏼
The show is still amazing but you can’t deny how untouchable those early years are. And we’re so thankful for Jon being a part of it and playing a legendary character so perfectly!
Damn, he is so eloquent and down to earth when he speaks, you expect that gruff aggressive voice from his characters. Love that guy and all his work. Reminds me of Galdolfini when he's not in character as Tony.
"blaring some Danzig" I didn't think it was possible to love an actor any more than I did
Jon Bernthal is just such a geniune and humble guy, idk how anyone could not like him.
Jon is a great actor. I hope to see him lead more movies and shows
First 5 seasons were incredible , great show .
@@okaeT Season 2 was good too. The first half is a little slow but has some great character moments. Second half really picks up and is among peak walking dead stretches imo
It's still really good season 6 was really good and so was the others you're just a bunch of haters
@@itzbp9949 haters ? Stop being so offended , its just a matter of taste , you like it ? Good for you , i dont and its ok 👍
@@okaeT no 1 - 5 straight
Shane was one of the best characters in the walking dead.
Shane was ahead of his time. While everyone else in the group thought he was an animal he showed you had to be cutthroat to survive. Something everyone else who lived developed.
@@ThurgoodJenkins1 Yet got easily bit by a zombie
@@frogsama666 he literally got murdered 😭
@@Kiddlow2x I'd argue it was closer to self defense than murder, but yes. He was killed by a man, not a walker
@@haydeng3541 Rick talked him down, you could see in Shane’s eyes he regrets what he was doing for that second of time, Rick doesn’t give him a chance to atone.
Jon is one of the best actors working today. From Punisher to wind river and sicario
Really seems like a honest cool dude! Much respect to his gratitude he seem to have for life, good and bad.
Shane's death was planned from the beginning of the show. It was a great arc, perfect timing. While I loved Shane, he left at the right time and his death made sense and the character was complete. Better than so many other TWD characters that stayed on way too long and became stale or just had arcs that just kept going in circles.
After shane I enjoyed Abraham very much, to see him killed by negan broke my heart.
He's one of the few actors/actresses where I'll watch any movie or tv show because he's in it
same !!!
Jon Bernthal is an amazing actor. He played Shane brilliantly and Shane wasn't an easy character to play.
Shane was there only for two seasons but he is still one of the best characters in the show!
I never watched the walking dead and as an outsider I think it was wonderful for him because the opinion I saw about the show peaked some time after he left and then declined a bit now so leaving before the peak setting the peak up was like getting credit for the greatness of the show without working there anymore and not taking any damage from any possible decline because you're not there anymore
lol you & me both but because I love the rest of his work I am going to watch at least the first 2 seasons
I really missed and still miss his character on the show. While he was on the show he was the most noticeable character. After he left Daryl became my favorite character.
He really went all out with Shane I could see the seriousness in his eyes.
Bernthal is how every actor should be. So respectful, kind, and humble. Dude is amazing.
He’s a legend. Good guy and real human.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard his natural voice before 😂. He truly is a great actor.
He seems like a humble dude
One of the most respectable actors imo he's such a humble guy but absolutely delivers in every role he plays.
While it was sad to see him go after just Season 1, the man literally became and defined a whole new generation of The Punisher right after. Had he been tied up with the scheduling for TWD, he would have never been able to do it. And he's starred in a total of 16 other projects after TWD. Might not be a Movie A-star, but he has earned so much respect from his fans.
he is way better than most A-stars & he isn't full of that woke nonsense he just has a lot of common sense & innate decency he would make a great role model for his kids - he is what I term a fully rounded fully souled human being
You could hear his voice slightly trembling when he mentioned all of his cast mates. Really goes to show how much he loves and misses them.
His line:
“Let me tell you something else man”
*rubbing his head*
“They’re in the wooooods”
1:57 In the whoooods
he sat on a rock...
IN THE WOOOOOODS
I absolutely HATED Shane in the Walking Dead... DAMN is he a good actor!!
One thing Jon can walk away knowing is he was in my opinion the best actor on that show, and that's saying a lot because everyone is incredible. But when he died, something died along with the show. He can walk away knowing he did a great job, genuinely.
Started the show a week ago and loving it, just saw shanes death RIP
you're in for one hell of show, enjoy!
I have that shot with the giant moon in the background and Rick and Shane facing off in that field burned into memory.
First saw John in the walking dead. And now seeing him as frank castle, wolf of Wall Street etc.
Dudes a fantastic actor, one of my favorites
With only 2 seasons, it's impressive how iconic his character is.
Jon got big BECAUSE he was killed off.
His body of work speaks for itself.
It was a blessing.
100 percent
Well T W D was still his first big break as he realizes now and is what allowed him to show off his acting skills before moving onto much bigger and better things
My favorite thing about The Walking Dead is that you are able to feel the love between the main cast members, it makes the show feel like an authentic experience. Jon was an amazing Shane.
As crazy as a character he was, the role was done great. Legend.
Love this whole interview on so many levels!
I watched this because I hated his character so much I need to see he’s a decent guy.
Shane was right the whole time. Rick turned into Shane.
I missed Shane soooooo much. Shane is the reason I became a Jon Bernthal fan... then there was Frank 😆
It most likely worked out for the best for Jon, he might have never auditioned for The Punisher, if he was still on the walking dead.
He was really good in daredevil.
He was amazing as Punisher
*The Punisher.
He was a pressure cooker of emotion, but Shane talked a lot of sense. Pretty much dead already was one of my favourite episodes and Jon was incredible in that ep. I was totally on his side come the end of it, he’s intense but he was spot on.
Shane is easily the best character in the show's history.
He's got screen presence.
Are you serious. Man 😯 🤫
"jon we're gonna kill you off the show"
Jon: "no no no no no, wait wait wait"
"Blare some Danzig" lmfao!
I remember not liking Shane as a character when I first watched The Walking Dead, now when I go back I've grown to love Shane and always admired Jon's acting. It's a shame they didn't keep him around for long, he'd have been amazing in the rest of the seasons along with Norman.
The first season of TWD was the best.
LOL it’s so funny to see corner of Brian swear. I’m so happy he’s doing this podcast.
Im sorry what
Corner of brian
he sat on a rock in the woooooods
Conan had me dying laughing. I can feel that pain but that was hilarious.
1:57 "They're in the WHOOUUDS"
Conan is hilarious 😅
Everyone says "Shane was the antagonist of season 2", but the real antagonist of season 2 was LORI. She drew a wedge between Rick & Shane, destroying their bond. She sewed the seeds of Shane's destruction. #TheWalkingDead #TWD
I could listen to Jonny talk all day. There's just something about the way he speaks that's very 'listenable'.
Shane was one of my favorite characters in TWD such a complex character, I love Jon Bernthal in every show role he plays
To this day I still believe that Shane and Merle were the two best characters that WTD ever had
WTD
Walking The Dog
The Governor as well I thought too. My top 5 would probably have to be
1 Shane/The Governor
2. Rick
3. Michonne
4. Merle
5. Tyrese
the character lasted 2 seasons and is still talked about as one of the best characters in TWD even After 11 seasons of TWD 8 Seasons of Fear 6 episodes X3 spin offs ...Shane is still one of the best characters in the show.
@@smh-TV That's a good analysis of him. Ahead and isolated because of that, while extreme in presentation. Knew the future coming but lacked the manner to tactfully teach it to those who didn't.
He didn't aged at all. Still looks like Shane from s2.
It was meant to be cause he went on to do great things and rolls. I was so upset when the punisher ended. No one else could play the punisher as good as he did
Jon is such a intense actor and he can take a role for a kind person as well.
