  • I'm going to be 50 this year & I can do this. How is it possible?
...and why do I feel the need to talk to the camera as if it's a curious onlooker?
It's late spring training for me. I'm a bit behind schedule & always a bit more stiff & clunky in the daytime vs the night.
I completely hosed the camera angle in both shots. The angle is too low on both & from behind doesn't provide a good look at the ball trajectory.
I haven't video'd myself pitching in a couple years for some odd reason. I'll get it right next time.
    Backstory...
I've been athletic & agile my entire life. Been dedicated to diet & exercise for about 5 years now. I lean hard into keto without going all the way, stretch often, and do half hour walks as fast as some jog every day.
I also train like a relief pitcher in baseball. Wait... what?
I played baseball as a pitcher up to my senior year & was pretty good. My wiffle ball pitching skills were next level up age 25.
Then... I dunno. I lost my way & didn't throw for 20 years.
In 2020, I tried to throw again & couldn't. My fingers went numb after a few pitches & it hurt.
Without consulting a doctor or Google, I spent a year doing some things I figured would solve the issue- stretching out my hands & fingers & being mindful of the things that cause carpel tunnel. ...and It worked!
When it got warm in 2021, I began throwing casually every other day. By mid-summer, I was able to pitch again like my former teenage self.
From there, it's my goal every year to be able to throw 30 pitches 4 times a week by April 1st & maintain that until November 1st.
That is what's expected of a late inning relief pitcher.
If I could throw 95, I'd try out for a job. lol
But don't think I can hit 75MPH, so... it's all for fun, burning calories, & maintaining physiology.
From Nov to March 1st, I make about 20 long throws like an outfielder on days when the wind is light & temps are above 40 to keep the arm in shape.
This is the start of year 4 of being able to pitch again. I've taught myself a curve & sinker, & can vary the speeds of those pitches by manipulating the grip without telegraphing from the fastball by maintaining similar arm action & release point during delivery.
It's something I look forward to every time. Exercise is fun if you find something you love.
One of these days, I'll blow out my elbow or shoulder, and that will probably be it. So I really do embrace every time I go out there to do something I once thought was lost forever.
